  • This second session on my new high-aspect foil was so much fun! Great conditions with some flatwater!

Happy New Year! I can not wait to try mine. What size Mast were you on? Aluminum? When Gybing did you find it wanted to track downwind? I know you said that going into the turn with speed. Thanks

Happy New Year to you too! I was on a 85 cm aluminium mast. Not sure what you mean by tracking downwind. Compared to a low aspect it takes longer to roll, so you have to readjust your balance to account for that. A friend of mine has both the Fluid H XL and the Fluid H L and he says the L is a bit easier to jibe, but he only uses it in stronger winds.

So last session was your very first on the Fluid XLH, I must have missed that part last time. But now it really looked good and you seemed to have the fantastic foil feeling that’s really addictive.
It was hard to see if you stayed up on foil after those jumps or if you had to start again from the water.
And you explained it like so may others that it feels like being on rail, but was it mostly a good or bad sensation; good like it’s driving it self or bad that it’s hard to turn? I’m going to watch some more of your future videos to hopefully help me figure out if the Fluid XXLH with its 122 cm width is too much. I guess for your conditions it would be too much but I only have inland lakes here in Sweden and (just as you) want to be able to get going in the lowest of winds. I hear a lot of good things said about the Axis PNG 1300 which has a 130 cm width, but maybe it’s different from the Fluid XXLH?
Looking forward to see your progression on the foil!

Hi Staffan. Thanks! I did not stay up on foil after the jumps. My technique is probably not good enough for that yet and my board is a bit big and heavy (but should be getting a smaller one soon). The "on rails" feeling is not really a good feeling for me so far. It is a new sensation and turning is a bit harder. But again: I'm new to it, so maybe I get better and then it won't be a problem. But the foil definitely comes with good sensations too: the speed and the crazy upwind angles are a lot of fun. I would only get the XXL version of the foil if you are a heavier guy (maybe 100kg and above). Gong says that the XXL has limitations when it comes to turning. If you want to get going in really light winds I would rather go for a big sail. In one of my next videos I will be using the Gong Superpower 9m² and talk about light winds so make sure to check that out.
