This is very inspiring. I'm only just getting on the foil, haven't had one clean jybe yet, but now I know I'm doing all this so I can give myself all the chances of participating in such an event. Hopefully meet you there one day! Congrats and thanks for sharing.
Hi Steve. I'm definitely not the best rider in my area. Jose Pinyana wing foils at the same spot here and he was Spanish wing foil champion. :-) I actually like having really good people around to learn from!
Congratulations and great vid, always inspiring and interesting to hear a “normal” person’s perspective. I think you should be proud of your accomplishments and get those starts sorted🤙🏻💪🏻
Thank you!! It was amazing! Haha, at first I read "a touch far from Austria" and thought "well not too bad". Yeah definitely a long way from you. You should set up a Defi Wing Australia edition!
Gratuliere! I admire your participation and overall you left behind quite some other wingfoilers. Regarding your remark about the stabilizer. Ofcourse a smaller stab can give more speed. But I think it is more important what you feel in your legs. Especially on longer streches you want to have the same load in both legs. For example: If the position of the mast is already maxed out to the front and you still feel too much back foot pressure, than the stab gives too little downforce and should be bigger or thicker or shimmed at a bigger angle.
I read that the winner had the Ozone Fusion double wing. I also saw that in the top 15 there are 3 Gong team riders who use the Aramid UPE wings. I don't know if they took the Pulse Double Ply or not. I would have :-)
Yes, Mathis Ghio (the winner) used the Ozone Fusion wing. He just signed with Ozone. The best Gong rider was Julien Rattotti I think and on his Instagram you can see that he used the Pulse DP (the double profile). These wings make a lot of sense for high-speed long-distance racing. However in the normal short GWA races the Gong riders seem to use Droid Aramid wings. I asked a Gong advisor about this and he said "on small distances the DROID UPE is more efficient and also better in gusty conditions"
It's actually 57 km/h for the top guys. But you can get a top-150 placement with average speed of 40 km/h which is a lot more doable. I will do a video about gear, stay tuned!
Regarding your remark about ventilation due to mast thickness. Your HM86 mast has a thickness of 17mm. That is the same thickness as the normal carbon V2 Gong mast. Me and my 3 homies all have Gong alu masts V2 which were also made 17mm thick to be more stiff than the shaky V1's. We have never experienced ventilation of the mast. Is it possible that your frontwing initiated the ventilation, which crept up the mast so that you get the idea from topview that only the mast ventilated? The mast angle of attack is small so it will not stall or ventilate quickly, except in a quick turn.
My HM86 mast has a thickness of 17mm at the bottom but 20mm towards the top. The normal carbon mast in the "racing size" of 100cm is 17mm top and bottom. So it may be slightly faster but mostly the same. The best racing mast is the new HM107 and that one is 13mm throughout. That's a big difference. I talked to a Gong advisor and he said "yes excatly the HM86 is too thick...too big stab + too thick mast = ventilation = crashes !". Of course I don't know if maybe the front wing played a role too. But I feel you would see that on the footage. And it's an Ypra-S which is made for high speeds. Yeah it's too big to go really fast, but with my modest top speed of 32 km/h I just doubt it would ventilate. So I can only really blame the mast and stab. And I had many weird crashed because of this. I guess the only way to find out is to try reach higher speeds with more adapted gear for racing and see if the problem disappears.
@@windaddict With your speed which is about the same speed as ours, ventilation is hardly possible. My buddy also has a relatively fast Gong Fluid M-H frontwing of 1000cm2 and he never ventilated anything. His topspeed is 35kmu. Did you ever ventilate with your mast and your Fluid H? What I meant was that I think that you were too high in the water without noticing, so that your front wing ventilated or breached.
No, I don't recall ventilating with my mast and the Fluid H. But I never really pushed speed or kept high speed for a long time. At Defi Wing it happened more often at certain parts of the course. Maybe currents were strange there. First I thought it was seaweed but other riders didn't seem to have problems with that. It was definitely not me being up too high or breaching. I know when I am too high. You can see on the video the weird splash that is produced before the fall. If that's not ventilation, then I have no clue what it is. Sometimes I felt the board was rotating towards the windward side and I had to put counter pressure with my back foot to avoid crashing. Again my assumption was that this was due to ventilation.
@@windaddictI agree it LOOKS like mast ventilation seen from above. And it would explain the turning motion. But it doesn't explain the sudden loose of lift. Or the air would have been sucked down to the frontwing. I am familiar with weed, when it slings around the mast or the wing, the flow is disturbed suddenly. This can be an explanation, because you had it more in certain parts of the course. But it does not explain why other did not seem to be hindered by it. (but you do not have a rearview mirror :-) Btw I hardly notice when I am too high above the water, only after I crash I realised I was too high...... Interesting topic!
Congrats with your first Defi! It was on my bucket list for a couple of years now so I hope I'll make it to the next one.
Thanks Den!
Thanks for sharing your experience and more importantly setting expectations with us semi intermediates considering taking part in the next Defi
Glad it was helpful!
Great to have your live witness on these races which many people would like to come at least once in life! Congratulations and thanks for your video.
Thanks a lot for your nice comment!
This is on my goals list! Thank you for sharing this. Very inspiring to see you take this on.
Thank you so much! It's so great to hear that this video inspires people
Thank you for sharing your experience! It was very interesting to watch it and gave me motivation to visit one of those events one day!
Thanks for your nice comment!
Amazing event. Congratulations for completing all the races.
Love the Ozone Fusion
Thank you! Yep, looks like it's a fast wing
There’s no shame in messing your foot switches up! 🤙
As long as you finished, you’re a winner!💪🏼
I like your way of thinking!
This is very inspiring.

Congrats and thanks for sharing.
Your comment made my day!
you are probably the best local rider in your area,, very impressive,,, the record for an efoil is just about the same as a wing foil
Hi Steve. I'm definitely not the best rider in my area. Jose Pinyana wing foils at the same spot here and he was Spanish wing foil champion. :-) I actually like having really good people around to learn from!
You remind me on my first WS race experience! Great review!
Thank you!
Thanks for a great Race report!
-And I'm looking forward to upcoming episodes regarding how to ride for 90 minutes without a break!
Haha, it certainly feels like an eternity
Congratulations and great vid, always inspiring and interesting to hear a “normal” person’s perspective. I think you should be proud of your accomplishments and get those starts sorted🤙🏻💪🏻
Thanks a lot! The starts definitely bugged me the most. Will work on them in upcoming races.
Thanks for sharing. Got me motivated to go there.
Nice!!
Nice report!
Last year was survival, this year was pure fun!
See you next year!
A fellow defi-winger! Yes, see you next year!!
@@windaddict make sure to come with a 2.5... it's only used during the defi ^_^.
Haha, I know!
Just amazing to see so many wing foilers at once.
Yes! So cool to see! At first I couldn't believe my eyes
Congratulations! Really interesting to hear your experience. Following the Defi online it looked amazing. Pity it's a touch far from Australia!
Thank you!! It was amazing! Haha, at first I read "a touch far from Austria" and thought "well not too bad". Yeah definitely a long way from you. You should set up a Defi Wing Australia edition!
Good expérience for next year 😊
Yes! Thanks!
Big balls!!!! Congrats!!!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks so much!
That would be a wild experience. After I’ve learnt to jibe, I might consider entering a race. I’m a 3 month noob.
You should! Races are fun. I did my first race with beginner gear.
congrats.🌊
Thank you!

Thank you! Much appreciated! I had the mast all the way in the back actually because I felt this was the only way to get more control.
@@windaddict I think you did right. The stab you used is indeed relatively big compared to your frontwing.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing !
What gear winners rode ?
What new gear did you see ? Cool protos ? Trends ?
I will make another video about racing gear and specifically about what I learned at the Defi.

50km/h average speed is ridiculously fast. I would have to do some serious gear upgrades.

Placement is not important, participation definitely is...
True!

interesting feedback ! it's doesnt seem easy to rank hight !
No, the average level at Defi is pretty high!
wing was lucky, for ours days was no wind we get only one funny race after wings
I know! Defi Kite and Defi Wind really didn't get great wind this year.
