    I love that this song shows that the two ideas of "you don't have to fight TO BE a man" and "sometimes you have to fight when you ARE a man" are not mutually exclusive.
    I think the best response to this I ever heard was "he always turned the other cheek until it wasn't his cheek to turn"

      His father's advice was "Walk away from trouble if you can" just so happens this was one you don't walk away from. You don't have to fight to be a man but some times you got to fight when you're a man. There are no contradictions.

      @GrannyBoots the still brings me to tears also. This song came out when I was dealing with a lot of things in my life. I'm a HUGE Kenny Rogers fan ever since he came into the music scene. I TRULY do love the message of this song. Sad to say, it was still a lot of stigma in our society when it comes to rape and sexual assault. Another thing that I learned later on that people don't realize about this subject is why it happens. There less of a part to it that has to do with sex. Rape and sexual assault ISN'T REALLY about sex for the most part. IT IS however~about imposing your will upon somebody else AND controlling them. The statistics are now that one person will get assaulted in every 6 seconds. People have the perception that if you have a lot of skills that YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO fight somebody off. THAT'S not always the truth~IF they get the jump on you. I AM someone who used to box and the underground circuit on Long Island & NYC when I was much younger AND I did Krav Maga. The first 3 seconds of any encounter will make OR break it. In a lot of cases I have learned that this decides whether you survive OR NOT. People really don't realize or maybe they don't want to understand it? But depending on the situation~even people who ARE normally tough fighters CAN get taken down by others. #RapeSurvivor

    • @GrannyBoots
      @GrannyBoots ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christinegelabert1651 😓....this breaks my heart Miss Christine. Ive been shocked and deeply saddened to discover the increase in assault rate on the younger generation (i have daughters). You are absolutely right - it has zero to with sex and everything to do with imposing your will upon another... even further - destroying an element of purity and innocence within the soul of a human being. Anyone capable of such a violation is soul-less imho...perhaps wanting to destroy something they dont have (?). I have never personally experienced this, but "someone" near and dear to me has, and it cost her the life of her unborn daughter at 24 weeks...she lived only 2 days 😓. NO ONE should EVER express an opinion on what someone "should have done" in a situation they've never experienced....period. i hope you are healing Miss Christine. Never forget, The BigBoss☝ can transform any situation and utilize it for benefit others....you may be meant to help other young women who've endured what you have and help them heal as well. I absolutely love what you two are doing. The music you react to is great music. I spent my teenage years in the 70s. Music brought us all together because almost every song was about being a person handling what life brought you. It is a melting pot where politics, race and everything else just goes away. Bands were interracial. The entire theme of the 70s was really about love. It was the best years of my life. So glad you are loving it too. Bless you both.❤

    You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. It's a great message we are missing in our society. One I am trying to teach my sons. I also note that the song is ambiguous as to the Gatlin boys' fate. Not one of them was standing could mean a few things. Did any of them get back up? Cause had it been me....they might not have. How much rage did Tommy have? It's left to the imagination. Great song, great reaction!

    Kenny Rogers' lyrics are straight up electric because every song speaks to something different we've all experienced to some degree. Dads teach boys not just by the good things they do but sometimes by telling them not to make the same mistakes they've made. I have seven boys and damn I've messed a lot of things up. There's a fine balance between giving too much information and being honest about imperfection with your boys. Hopefully in the end we dads leave something positive for our boys to build on.

    Just an FYI, they turned this song into a movie and Kenny Rogers played Tommy's Uncle. Good little flick!

    Kenny was first and foremost a performer, he was at his best taking the words and music of others and bringing them to life naking them his very own, "Coward of The County" is a great example of this. Kenny also wrote songs two of which I like to see you react to one is "Rueban James" the other is "Sweet Music Man".

    I grew up on this song. Our neighbour was a DJ and every Sunday morning he would play Kenny Rogers, Jim Reeves, Loretta Lynn etc. I loved that time and miss it.

    This song is one of the greatest. Yes, the first part is true. Fighting needless fights doesn't make you a man (or hell, a woman for that matter) because fighting to prove yourself will land you in trouble. But the second part is just as a true - there are certain lines that once crossed, there's no going back and the person (persons) that crossed that line deserves to face repercussions and Tommy showed them that. Also, never make assumptions. Just because a person doesn't fight for the sake of fighting doesn't mean that won't unleash hell if pushed too far. And the one who seems the calmest is often the most dangerous.

    My dad taught me the same thing. And, I had a similar situation, where a lot of people thought I was the weak one, UNTIL, they finally stepped over that line, and I unleashed Hell on those "Gamblin Brother's" of my own. AND yes, you could hear the pin drop with my situation, as well. Kenny Rogers is a true legend, in the country music industry, like Dolly Parton is, as well...

    i always thought it telling that no one in the bar room tried to stop the fight (which either means the Gattlin boys were hated, they'd been boasting about what they'd done, everyone felt Tommy was in the right, or all of the above) because, besides the Gattlin boys, Tommy, the bartenders etc there had to be more people in the bar

    One of the first albums I had as a child was Kenny Rogers Coward of the County. I would listen to this song over an over and over. I think I was probably four or five. I liked the music (especially the drums leading into the chorus) but never understood the imagery used to explain things. It wasn't until they actually released the movie that I truly understood (still pretty young at that point) but it doesn't matter how many times I listen to it now I still get goose bumps when he locks the door.

    They made a TV movie based on this song. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the "taking turns at Becky" part. I thought they just came over & slapped/beat her up. It wasn't until years later when I hear it again as an older teen that it clicked in my brain what really happened. Wait... WHAT?!?! OH HELL NO! I wanted to go kick some Gatlin boys' asses myself!
    OK, now you have to check out "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers... Another great story put to music. Kenny himself said it's a "great beer drinkin' sing-a-long song that everyone can join in". It's true, I first heard it as a kid & didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but me & my friends would belt out the main chorus every time it played on the radio "You picked a fine time to..." That's all I'll say for now, so as not to give "spoilers" on what the song is about. Please check it out soon - you wont regret it, I promise.
