Even after all these years, I still cry when I hear Kenny ask her to turn around ... so much emotion in his voice. And the times we were living in - the Viet Nam was.... hurt so many people! Thank you for doing this reaction. I definitely like when you do some 50s, the 60s, the 70s and early 80s. The best music ever ... and you were right earlier saying there was so much love around ... we were a kinder, gentler country/world. I pray that we can one day return to loving our fellow man. God bless you.

Don't overromanticize. The song is literally about a war veteran sent to fight in a war he didn't support, paralyzed and disabled, and then cuckolded by a heartless wife who can't even wait until he's dead and gone. That's your idea of a kinder, gentler world?

"It won't be long I heard them say until I'm not around"= he's a dying man on top of all the other things he's got on his shoulders, weighing him down. She's left him over and over again to go to town for her "needs to be met" while leaving him heartbroken.

Kenny Rogers and First Edition surprised everyone with this song back in the day. They weren't expecting a Country artist to record a Vietnam War protest song. Its kind of funny in a way for my family. I was a kid back then, but I had an older cousin who's wife's name was Ruby. Every time this song would come on the radio he'd start singing it at the top of his lungs and the family would all laugh and poor Ruby would just shake her head at him.😄

I was living in San Antonio near Fort Sam
Houston and Brook Army Medical Center. I kept the tears in and a smile on my face in front of these young heroes who were so horribly wounded, but I literally sobbed and screamed as soon as I could drive a few blocks away. So many of these kids had young wives going through hell, too.

"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" is a song written by Mel Tillis about a paralyzed veteran who lies helplessly as his wife "paints [herself] up" to go out for the evening without him; he believes she is going in search of a lover. As he hears the door slam behind her, he claims that he would murder her if he could move to get his gun, and pleads for her to reconsider. A line in the song about a "crazy Asian war" and the time of the song's release led to the assumption the song was about a veteran of the Vietnam War, though this was never stated in the lyrics. However, Tillis stated that the song was about a veteran of World War II.

Another good song from Kenny Rogers is Coward of the County. It's a man doing exactly what his father told him to do when he was a boy. A more famous and most popular song is The Gambler. They've even made a movie based on the song.

This song was written by Mel Tillis, but was originally recorded by Waylon Jennings... Kenny released it after Waylon, and before Mel released it...Mel was hesitant to release it, because he had a very distinct stutter when he talked... But not when he sang...
The song is based on a true story... BUT... the story didn't actually go as the song portrays... The truth was the (Disabled) man was jealous of his wife, who was actually faithful... Until he drove her to actually "Take Her Love To Town"... My source... Mel himself, in an interview by Ralph Emery... The video of that interview is on TH-cam... Very humorous story, as so many of Mel's stories were....

Korean War was another time of young men leaving America, not by their choice. Vietnam was a terrible, terrible time young men would get wounded, addicted & PTSD illness, I can’t even try to envision the horrors they went through AND then coming home & everything has changed. Kenny’s early recording is better as is Mel Tillis’ original. Hard times for both of the them, their world turned upside down & probably no real counselling around back then to help them through dark times 😢
I liked Kenny The First Edition in their early days ‘ What condition my condition is in’ more rock than country, later Kenny went country 😊

This was written by Mel Tillis, a singer song writer who has a pronounced stutter, though it doesn't occur when he is singing. He wrote many songs for other artists; besides "Ruby" the best of these are "I Believe in You" by Don Williams & "Detroit City" by Bobby Bare. Mel's most successful song which he sang was "Coca-Cola Cowboy". Mel also acted, appearing in among other the Cannonball Run movies.

What happened to Ruby's wedding vows... sickness and health, good and bad. This brings sadness to me. Over three years ago, I lost my husband after he overcame Covid. He died a half hour before the transportation company was to bring him home. Because of Covid, I did not get the chance to be with him, hold him, to say I love you and to say our goodbyes. I was so happy after him being gone for several months, to have him back home. It still haunts me. Before the covid lock down, my husband broke his hip and was at a rehab center. Without notice, (I visited him every day. From afternoon to closing hours) they told me I could not come in because of the lock down. A week later, they gave my husband a new untested roommate with Covid and because of the loose rules, I found out the staff were able to come to work with covid, with or without symptoms. Because of Covid and no physical therapy for his hip, and to be bedridden and hospitalized with covid, he was not going to walk (maybe temporary, three months before, he was diagnosis with Parkinson's) when he was to come home. I would take my husband walking or not. Just to be with him, talk to him, holding hands and I knew one day the Parkinson's will take over and I will not have forever with him. I was going to make the most of every minute with him. I feel so much anger and guilt not to bring him home once the lock down started. I did not know better and trusted the professionals.

The late Mel Tillis who wrote this song wrote this about a real couple he knew when he was younger it was not a Nam vet but a vet who was married to his nurse. they both died eventually

Kenny & Kim Carnes do a beautiful duet " don't fall in love with a dreamer" if you haven't reacted to it I think you'll love it. Kim is known for her big hit " Betty Davis eyes " . She also sang in " we are the world " 🌎 USA FOR AFRICA.. she has an amazing raspy voice 😊

One of my favorite songs by Kenny Rogers. The name Ruby made me think of a song by Loretta Lynn called Ruby's Stool. Would love to see y'all do a reaction to that one!

My mother's name is Ruby. We kids had so many songs to sing to her. She hated this one.

This was a Vietnam era song, and prosthetics and specialized wheelchairs were nowhere near as good as they are today. When he says "if I could move I'd get my gun" there's qchance that was literal. He may have been stuck in a bed or something like that. And when there's a draft on, things are different. It's not like he just up and decided to join and go away somewhere. Uncle Sam said "you're going" and that was that. Ruby is f'd up and just flaunting that sh*t in front of him. Smh

Oh, and this was Kenny's band The First Edition. Not straight country. They dipped their toes in a.lot of musical waters. "Just Dropped In" was fairly psychedelic, great song. "Something's Burning" and "Reuben James" were two other big hits that were more in the country-rock genre. All of those are worth checking out.

Since the first time I heard this I've thought Ruby was a B! My husband developed health problems due to his military service and for the last 15 years of his life and our 32 yr marriage we were not able to have sex. I never thought of going out on him. Love is the cake, sex is the icing and is not necessary if the love is real. My husband was my soul mate. I miss him still after 10 years and I'm still true to him. My heart remains his and forever will be.

What makes it the saddest is when he says he's heard he won't be around much longer. She could wait for him to pass & show some decency. ~ As for Kenny. He is an amazing story teller. Have you heard 'Lucille' or 'The Gambler'? Also great stories.

I believe this was actually Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. Whether it's solo or with a group, it matters. Another perfect example of this mistake is Tommy James - Draggin' The Line which is almost always attributed to his full group. By the way, this was a super duper reaction this time.

You’d love the live version and seeing Kenny when younger with entire band Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. My in-laws worked with him so we went to see him at Turtle Creek Country Club in San Antonio. My MIL said he wasn’t like some of the other artists, he was humble. His new hit Lucille had just been released at that time. And he was also with The Christry Minstrels.
