I wonder if it’s the phrase about placing the wreath that throws people off. If it was a more current traditions, they would pick up on what was going on. But it’s sad. It’s about like Abbott & Costello’s Who’s On First. Reactors usually just react to the exasperation of Costello or they have heard the routine before.

George didn’t want to record this song. He said no one would listen because it was so damn maudlin. But he was talked into it and it became one of his biggest hits. He was known as no-show Jones because he had a real problem with drugs and alcohol. He was one of a kind and that little warble in his voice is unique to him. He and Tammy Wynette were the royal couple of country music back in the day. Their duets are beautiful.

Patty Loveless had to carry him vocally through that because he broke down crying. Ok, I have to write this comment BEFORE I see your reaction; I’m praying you get what the lyrics are saying; all of the reactors miss it; I think you may get it!! I’m 56; still “young” but old enough to know the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music; we watch reactors because we get HYPED to see the generation after us and younger see and hear just how great so much music was; especially with the country falling apart from self-inflicted wounds, it is one of the few things that give us hope for the future ❤❤❤❤

"Possum" is his nickname in the Country community.. and my Mum played him and Tammy Wynette so much when I was growing up .. and his greatest hits got played to the point that I knew all the lyrics ... lol... there are many that feel he is the real deal .. and the king of country. He is so well beloved with Country fans. Oh and weathered.. well.... ....... ... well you could say ol' possum lived a really crazy and tumultuous life. I am sure if you google George you can read articles and check out footage of a lot of his escapades. haha Some say he had some demons.. but regardless of any of that.. I think it contributed to him really being a truly authentic country crooner. All these years later.. and I am grown now.. and I have the biggest love and soft spot for his music. Cheers from Ontario, Canada 😊🍁

George "Possum" Jones is a Country Music icon. Loved by many & toured in 50s with the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc. He wrote songs that were performed by Willie Nelson and many others. His duets with his wife (at one time) Tammy Wynette were part of country music history. He battled alcoholism, unfortunately, but was well loved by family, friends, & fellow artists.

Man you just don’t know the history of George Jones who was one of the greatest country legends. He and Tammy Wynette his second wife were the King and the Queen of country music as a couple. They have had televisions mini series about them and at least two movies about them. It would take all day to go into their history. I just can’t believe you have never heard of him or possibly her. He will be my favorite country singer until the day I die. Check out the song The Way That I Am with him and Merle Haggard dueting. They don’t get any better.

George didn't want to record this song, because he thought it was so sad, that no one would want to buy it. It became his Number One Song. They used to put a Wreath on the door of a house where someone passed away.

Back in the day, they put a wreathe of flowers with a black ribbon on the door of the house where someone had died to let folks know to be kind and quiet. In this song, the female kept coming and going on the man who loved her breaking his heart.

Yes, he loved her until he died. If you were to watch the official music video for this it makes all clear. So yes, the placed a wreath on his door. Back in the day and in some areas they still do. A Black wreath is placed on the door of a deceased person's home.

  • @garywaterman814

Nailed it. Good job. As others have said, many Reactors get that its a tragic love story but dont connect the dots that he stopped loving her because he died. Lost the woman. Never got her back. Either drank himself to death or comitted suicide over the pain of not having her. "We all wondered if she would come." (To his funeral. She did. To pay her respects. Church gossip about his painful death waiting for her.) They placed a wreath upon his door. (The door of his casket). Soon they'll carry him away. He swore he'd love her till the day he died. Then, he stopped loving her today.
The story/song is told from the perspective of an old friend to the dead man after his friends services.
Great and very deep song. George was one hell of a singer/story teller. He himself had a life marked by grey clouds. Im 53. My parents listened to George loudly in our house from late 70's - mid 80's. There has never been a moment of my life where i wasnt aware George battled his own demons. Namely, alcohol. Due to fame and fortune i can see where alcohol may not have been the only vice. But i dont know for sure. It was always a special night when George walked on stage. He was 1 hell of a performer and personality. But there was always a bit of pain when considering the man you were watching. You could feel it was looming there.
Could be urban myth but rumor for 40yrs has been that he once got a DUI on a riding lawnmower. Apparently taking it to a store to buy more beer or booze. Thats been a pretty big story for decades.

This was played at my dad's funeral. It was a service done in a Church. The preacher was friends with my Dad and he made the preacher promise to play this at the end of the service. His preacher honored that request. It brought everyone to tears. My friends called me after wards and said it was the sweetest thing ever and that their husbands better have a song for them when they pass. I chuckled over that. This was my dad's favorite song along with "Stand by your man" by Tammy Wynette. 😢❤ thank you for bringing back that memory.

During that time period in the south most people placed a wreath on their door when someone passed in their family. Plus sometimes the deceased was at the home and family & friends would come there to pay their last respects. I experienced that twice as a little girl in the 60's.

"Thay placed a wreath upon his door", when someone dies where I live the family places a wreath on the door of the family member that passed away. You got it right off. For a more upbeat George Jones check out "White Lightin'". George is a Country legend and a king of classic country. George had issues with alcohol and it caused him a lot of heartache both in his private life as well in his professional life. Even with all his issues he remains a legend in country music. Thank you for this beautiful and touching reaction to one of country's greats.

You were spot on. The wreath on the door is a southern thing representing the passing of someone in that household. The story is she left him right at the beginning. That’s why she said, “You’ll forget in time.” Well, he never did. He struggled with letting her go his entire life and loved her till the day he died.
