great video. can appreciate that you gave it a real world test dealing with wind, traffic, etc. glad to see the urban mpg test, most channels gloss right over this. was shocked to see the urban mpgs higher, but you showed the math. 👍
I think thats definately low mpg for a redesigned 4cyl turbo. I can average 21/22 mpg in my 2022 trd off road over long highway trips at speeds between 65/80 mph on regular round trips from NY to Fla on Rte 95.
Surprisingly my 2019 SR5 gets better mpg. 35miles drive to work i get 20 to 21 mpg at 70mph and 22 mpg at 65mph speed limit in NV highway. Total full tank range of 365 to 370 miles per full tank, 2 clicks fueling style also 👌
I have a 21 Taco and I consistently drive the speed limit everywhere and I average 20-22 MPG so how you can say the previous model gets 17 is simply untrue. This new truck is absolutely getting no better mileage than my 21. Also, in towing 4500-5000 lbs I average 10 mpg towing.
Great real world test! That is exactly what we need to see. Have you considered doing the same test while towing 2000-3000 pounds? I am curious if it can get better than 14 mpg
The fuel numbers don’t seem too bad, I thought turbo engines usually exceed their highway EPA numbers. I do have one thing I’m curious about, why do you fill it until it clicks, wait 20 seconds and fill it more, I think most companies say to stop at the first click, and over filling can cause EVAP system issues down the line.
yeah at 60mph hahah! try 70-80 you aint even touching 19mpg. so yeah stop capping too hard! i have a 2023 TRD offroad and the only way i can break the magic 20 is impede traffic and drive like a 90 yr old grandpa
@@21armyn i hear ya. There isnt any way you break that in a trd offroad with bigger tires. Maybe in a sr5 with the smaller tire combo but in the city, forget about it.
@@21armyn I drive 38 mi one way about 10 of it 65 the rest of it 70 that's with a level ,265 75/16 and aftermarket rims. Also I have the OTT Tune light/medium
Urban drive is getting 21 is damn good for a midsize. I has two 3rd gen trd offroads and they got between 15-17 in mixed driving and i hypermile a lot. That is terrible. Dont tell me the 3.5 v6 is better cause I have lots of time behind the steering wheel driving. Both were all stock on stock tires and wheels
The new truck makes more power and earlier than the 3.5 V6. The i-force, when available, will get at least the same mpg as the base 2.4, while making almost 50 more hp than the 3.5 V6 and 200 ft lbs more torque . 278 hp and 265 ft lbs to 326 hp and 465 ft lbs And, all the torque comes in under 2000 rpms. It's remarkable to get the power and performance gains without losing any efficiency, and maybe even gaining some.
@rts3613 generating power is easy, increasing fuel economy. That's not. I also have a Magnusson super charger on my truck. 380bhp and 370 torque. Fuel economy unchanged unless i floor it. What I'm saying for the price and for as long as we waited. Not impressed. The trd sports have power options as a option. Couldn't believe it. And as far as the truck getting at the same fuel economy. That's not acceptable.
@@sammy-gd7hw I think most people will see a few mpg gain over the last model Tacoma. I also think the trick is adding power and also efficiency at the same time, along with drivability. The new engine makes more power and peak torque at 1700 rpm instead of 4800 like the outgoing 3.5 V6. That, and the 8 speed trans make it way more usable power for a truck. The new i-force max hybrid makes pretty much stock 7.3 powerstroke diesel numbers. There are also improvements to the brakes, suspension and seating, it's not all just about the mileage rating.
240 miles from South Texas to San Antonio. 25.5 mpgs with a tail wind and 20.5 mpgs head wind. I also have the Duratracs on. Only difference is that I keep my tires air up to 36psi consistently. Many times people oversee this. And I drive 72 mph.
In my 2016 I got stuck behind some slow traffic (central oregon to reno nevada) going 50-60mph got 22 over several hundred miles. Typical tank 70/30 highway/town I get around 17.5-18 mpg. Over 20 on the road is typical unless your really movin.
The only reason to buy a mid size truck is better maneuverability and they take up a little less space in garages and driveways. Fuel economy is only marginally better than full size, if not the same or worse.
Historically that’s been the case, but why shouldn’t midsize trucks get better fuel economy? For Toyota to redesign the top selling mid-sized truck to have such marginal gains is such a missed opportunity. For what it’s worth it seems like the same people in the comments recording 20-22mpg in their g3 Tacomas. Those same ppl will probably record 25-28mpg with the new one with brand new highway tires set at 35psi, a tonneau cover, and with with a tailwind.
@@DrunkDrynasty25-28?? That’s a pipe dream fella. On average this new taco will get 2-3 max better MPG. Is a good improvement, but still disappointing for a new Tacoma.
If you ask me using cruise control is worse on MPG than using your foot. But that’s me using older vehicles that just crank on the gas if you slow down on a hill.
It seems like no matter what Toyota does, they can’t design a fuel efficient truck. I hate to say it, but I think Ram or Silverado are the way to go. Coming from a lifelong Toyota fanboy fed up with getting 16 mpg.
I also think not offering a hybrid in 4x2 trim is a mistake. Making all the hybrid models 4x4 only, guarantees the hybrid upgrade is hardly worth the extra expense.
That’s crap mileage for a completely new power train and transmission for this vehicle. Toyota claimed they had to go to the turbocharged 4 cylinder to meet EPA specs. Same crap mileage as my 2013 TRD off-road. I’ll probably go for the Ford F150 (even though I know Ford has their issues too) but at least it’s a full size truck with 2-3 mpg better mileage.
The urban test with only twenty plus miles is too small a sample to be accurate giving you a large margin of error with the fill and refill method. The trucks mpg is probably more accurate. There are fewer variables as the trucks meters fuel used and distance traveled the same each time whereas filling and refilling can be off depending on pump used, ambient temperature, truck sitting level or the presence of a gas bubble even though you waited 20 seconds. By the way TFL truck waits 30 seconds!😂 Your numbers are better when compared to a gen 3 TRD off road. My son has a 2023 and struggles to get 16 mpg with mixed driving. I have a 2020 TRD Sport 2wd and seldom get less than 20mpg with mixed driving and get 21 to 26 mpg highway. I recorded 28.5 mpg on the Natchez Trace Parkway with the cruise set at 55. The speed limit is 50. There are no stop lights or stop signs. There are also no major climbs or sharp curves that require slowing. It was a straight 55 for over 100 miles. There was no traffic I had to slow for.
i get more tank range on my motorcycle if i use higher rating gas. It can add up to 20 miles. I thinking the dude with the ranger hat is talking out his ass.

This test is as real as it gets. We own this truck, and have been living with it day in, day out. We consistently see 21.8 mpg avg. Thanks for watching. Let us know what color you choose.
Toyota are a bunch of idiots should added the Sienna hybrid engine in the access cabs for service trucks pool, gardeners, painters , ect services people 36 mpg all day

Premium fuel (higher octane) helps avoid detonation, and on modern ecu’s allows for more advanced timing that can result in higher peak power numbers. But has no real effect on MPG. That being said, we are glad you are getting great MPG on your 3rd gen. That’s great 🤟
Good to see real MPGs on real TX roads, just a little disappointed to see very similar numbers from previous Tacomas.
