For a group of lads who had that cocky football swagger, they wrote some of the most beautiful songs of all time. I absolutely love the stone roses. Music that brings pure joy.
This is what annoys me about Ian Brown - when he tries to sing, he's OK. Not good, by any means - not even close - but passable. Whereas normally he shouts and is awful, ruining every song.
Tony Wilson was certainly the last of a living generation, pure admiration for music, abstract, obscure, weird, new, waves and waves of encouragement for all new acts. A class act we sorely miss

I'm 73, been a rock music fan since '58, and completely missed the Stone Roses back in the day, not sure they were ever a big deal in the States. If they were, it was prob just in L.A. and NYC. Love the sound of these guys, great players and fine songwriters, too. Last month I even bought myself a really cool Reni hat. Reni's obviously a genius, defined as somebody who does something extremely well which is absolutely unique. Hendrix is one of those, so are Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Captain Beefheart and even Paulie!
They didn't tour Stateside during their flash in the pan. King Monkey said the USA wasn't ready for the Roses. Then, they signed a behemoth deal with Geffen and disintegrated.
I'm about 20 years younger than you and Canadian. They weren't on mainstream radio, but all the alternative kids knew who they were in the early 90s. I don't know if mainstream rock stations ever played them, but in my world they were pretty huge. I remember people just waiting and wondering when they'd release their second album. I'm blown away by just how good their first album was. Most bands don't start so strong. It's hard to believe this recording is from 1989. They were so solid with their music, and nobody else was doing what they were yet.
I am not familiar with this band at all, this was the first track of theirs I’ve ever heard. It’s brilliant. I’m a drummer myself and watching that guy behind the kit is an absolute pleasure. Very loose and relaxed yet in complete control. Also nice to see someone utilise the bell on the hi-hat. What a performance!

I watched this that night, i was on the dole so i could go to bed when i liked I remember the feeling of witnessing something special, i could hear The Byrds, they reminded me of Love and Arthur Lee, of so much more. What a cracking tune and that drumming.❤
I'm a guitarist and a singer so I know that drummers are the butt of many a joke (not by me i hasten to add, but it is well known in musician circles), but Reni. Reni is the master. Effortless. Absolute genius. What a groove. If Reni set up his drum kit at Manc Apollo, I'd be there.
