- How Leeds United Under Marcelo Bielsa Will Be The Premier League’s Most Exciting Team Next Season. Leeds United were unlucky not to get a result at the Emirates in the FA Cup Fourth Round, but Bielsa’s side certainly left North London with a top performance.
First let’s have a look at Marcelo Bielsa’s history. Known as ‘El Loco’, Marcelo Bielsa is the grandfather of modern football. Many of the best managers in the footballing world have played under Bielsa. The likes of Pep Guardiola, Gerardo Martino, Diego Simeone, Jorge Sampaoli, Marcelo Gallardo and Mauricio Pochettino to name a few. Pep Guardiola managed arguably the greatest side in football with the likes of Lionel Messi and Andreas Iniesta under him at Barcelona, whilst Diego Simeone took his Atletico Madrid side to two Champions League finals and even a La Liga title. The most recent success story from a Marcelo Bielsa understudy was Mauricio Pochettino, who took Tottenham Hotspur to their first Champions League final. All of these managers reference Bielsa’s style of football as a key influence on their teams’ style of play. Bielsa uses high risk, high reward tactics that can be best described as high intensity attacking, possession football.
Moving onto Marcelo Bielsa style of play. Bielsa’s teams are often based around a 3-3-1-3 formation with clearly defined player roles. His team is broken into two units, the attacking unit and defensive unit but his team attack and defend as one. In the defensive unit the back three is comprised of three ball playing defenders, midfielders or full backs played out of position for their ability to pass or carry out of defence. Whilst the middle three are made up of two wing backs and a central midfielder that operates as the crux of the defensive shape and holding position as an option for the other five “defensive players” to pass to.
In the attacking unit, the front three feature a central striker, often a physically able target man and two wide forwards that stretch the pitch, allowing them to overload opposition defenders when the wing backs join the attack. Despite having the most average possession per game in the Championship, only two teams - Barnsley and Hull - have made more tackles. This is Bielsa 101 and the high intensity attacking and possession football we mentioned before. Leeds have played two main shapes this season, a 4-1-4-1 vs one striker and the 3-3-1-3 vs. two man strike forces.
For all that Marcelo Bielsa has done for the Championship side, Leeds United still have outstanding quality all over the pitch. One of the most impressive talents to come out of Leeds, Kalvin Phillips, is the talk of the town these days. Kalvin Phillips is the only player in the Championship averaging three+ tackles and two+ key passes per game this season. Along with Phillips, the likes of Ezgjan Alioski and Ben White are highly rated in the Championship. The top man management is evident with a player like Patrick Bamford - who hasn’t really settled down anywhere in his career until joining Bielsa’s setup at Leeds.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Wow! Sense in tactics was simply explained. Hold fort, pass the ball. Being a Man United fan, I'm eagerly waiting for Leeds' return, they have been missed for far too long! Football has won. Leeds done what they finally needed to. Bring football to football lovers. I believe for us Man United supporters, Ole was as Fergie described, the best student of the game. Now couple that with the other students like Pep and Klopp and Simione, and... et al! This hopefully will translate to less social media and more joga bonito!

Bielsa is one of the best coach in the world,,even with decent players he managed to turn Leeds into great team,,my prediction for them if they make it to the premier league is top ten..however, unlucky to Leeds fans coz Bielsa wont coach any team with star players,,which means if some rich lad come and buy the team definitely he will go..

Wild, yes, but just watch how they work. It’s exciting, fluid football with numerous goal chances created. But Bielsa doesn’t seem to prefer out-and-out strikers (because they have to work a lot off the ball and be prepared to change position frequently) so we don’t score as many goals as we should.

Great video, covered everything. Only thing I'd say is the wingers aren't usually inverted. Jack Harrison played on the right against Arsenal, but he almost always plays on the left with Pablo Hernandez or Helder Costa on the right.

With less injuries, the club staff looks to be more in condition to manage the deep stress Marcelo Bielsa's demanding football. There is still a deep unbalance between scoring opportunities and goals scored, as well as too many indecision on opponents free kicks in Leeds penalty area. If all this was solved, LUFC would be already mathematically promoted in Premier League... I deeply hope Leeds will be promoted without going on the play-offs, but when in Premier League, playing an outstanding football could be not enough. You need to be more "cynical" when attacking an less naive when you're defending. I mean, An Argentinian trainer could be the best you can ask for, but in some situation, an "Uruguayan" kick the ball out of the pitch would be the best solution. Stopping the opponent's attack should me the must, disregarding of the elegance you use for it. And in premiership you can have the luxury to waste five, six goal opportunities. Not in Premier League.

I think you'll find that a league with Liverpool, City and this new United will be very hard to beat when it comes to "most exciting" football. Leeds are fun to watch though, no doubt about it.
When Arsenal played them in the cup we were surprised by the intensity that they brought. Every ball they were 1st to. I’m excited to see them in the prem. Bielsa requires the right environment and project and as long as the owners follow his principles Leeds will be a very tough team to play against

Cuando Bielsa entrenó a mi equipo, Athletic Club ( liga española) hicimos una gran temporada y llegamos a dos finales, la Copa y Europa League. Pero lamentablemente llegamos fundidos y perdimos las dos. Pero quedará en nuestro recuerdo las dos victorias contra Man U. El mismo Ferguson dijo que ningún equipo le había sometido tanto en su propia casa. Bielsa hace a sus jugadores mejores de lo que son, les hace sentir capaces de derrotar a cualquier rival en su propio estadio por fuerte que sea. Si mantienen las fuerzas hasta el final pienso que puede acabar entre los 4 primeros. Suerte esta temporada.

I'm very curious to see this press against Liverpool. If either fall back is left exposed, then then the other is capable of a long, swinging pass to the other full back which is left in space. This was demonstrated for the second goal against Manchester City in Liverpool's 3 - 1 win in November 2019.

Great video. Leeds main challenge will be scoring more goals. They have created a huge amount of good opportunities inside and outside the box, not being able to find the net or try a shot on goal. Bamford has not been the a target man. I hope R. Moreno will proove he is worth the money they paid for him. A more effective Leeds will be even more exciting to watch. Marching on together, forever.

Leeds is a 1 team city that has an airport also. Its the 2nd biggest financial city England. Safe to say with the right investment they will push half of the league to the side. Remember they went down because of financial mismanagement, not because of a poor team.

Know something extremely underrated?? Biela has been a major contributing factor to England's domestic and national team success indirectly. Through the system work particularly of Pochettino and Guardiola that has benefited Stirling, Kane and more and has meant Southgate has a simple system to copy and paste internationally from most of his key players playing similar styled and methods.
Sure, Southgate adds his own flavours, but he has a template and training regime that greatly benefits him at club level... plus the added benefit even non disciples of Bielsa are all playing more to those style now too.
