Pep Guardiola's Manchester City met Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United for the first time in the Premier League this season. The game, ending 1-1, was a fascinating display of tactical ideology, as Pep went up against his mentor for only the fourth time. But how did both teams react to the goals within the game? Alex Stewart explores in this video.

The sad fact is that decent analysts like Alex probably wouldn't get enough time to actually do any meaningful analysis. I watched the United-Spurs game on Sky and the half time break was 5 minutes of punditry sandwiched between what felt like 4 hours of adverts.
I would have still enjoyed 5 minutes of Alex more than 5 minutes of ex United players moaning about how bad the team is though.

Dayan Siddiqui if you’ve ever watched Nouman, he often uses a series of still frames from the match footage to exhibit how certain things happen. He draws lines and highlights players in the edit, and it works quite well. Tifo could perhaps do something similar.

In today's game so many fullbacks are defensively dubious, that I think that you are better off playing with three CB, just make sure that the two outside ones have a some speed. The average fullback is little more then a deep-lying winger.

Guardiola is a tactical ideologue until the knockout stages of the CL when he plays a back three and comes up with creative new ways to lose to inferior opposition every year.

    • @thuo1000
      @thuo1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +219

Guardiola is a genius, no doubt. However, as Thomas Mueller said, Pep is a coach that is usually torn between playing attractive football and adapting to his opponents strengths (in the UCL). This analogy is correct. At the same time, I do not blame Pep for making tactical changes to match his opponents. Last season's champions league loss to Lyon at the quarters was not entirely Pep's fault. Jesus and Sterling especially, missed sitters. Man City had played Lyon the previous season twice in the group stages and they drew one game and lost one game. Pep played his usual 4-3-3 formation which transformed into a 2-3-5 formation when City had the ball. This formation is what Pep used almost all season when City won the league with a historic 100 pts (2017/18 season) and the 2018/19 season when City won the quadruple. However, that formation was always countered in the champions league. They dominated the opposition, yes, and created numerous goal scoring chances but the opposition found ways to counter attack. So I can understand why Pep decided to adapt to his opposition strengths last season in the CL.
When City played real madrid last season, Pep adjusted his tactics to exploit real madrid's weakness. He played a double pivot and in the home game where City beat real madrid 2-1, City were brilliant especially off-the ball. Jesus pressed Varane into a mistake early on in the game which resulted in Sterling scoring the 1st goal. City should have scored at least 3 goals in that 1st half with the way they pressed Madrid into mistakes. This was a tactical masterclass from Pep since most guys were saying Madrid would go through due to City's lack of form.
Against Lyon, Pep tried to adjust his tactics to suit the opposition weakness. Again, in the epl, we have 38 games. In the knockout stages in the CL, you only have 2 games to make ammends (home and away matches). Last season, due to covid-19, the knockout stages was reduced to just one leg and I understand Guardiola being cautious and setting up tactics that the opposition would not be familiar with.
Obviously, the Lyon manager and coaching staff had studied Pep's tactics that he uses in the epl and in the champions league games especially the 2 games against real madrid, so they were set on how to counter those tactics. Pep had to think outside the box and adjust his tactics accordingly. Jesus and sterling really let him down in that Lyon game.
In Pep's career as manager, his critics have accused him of not being flexible enough in his philosophy. Yet, when he does tactical changes and tweaks, the same critics switch up and say he should stick to his winning formula. For fucks sake, there is no winning for Pep, is there?
So when City beat Real Madrid last season, the critics showered Pep with praise for his tactical flexibility in both games. When Pep made similar tactical tweaks for the game against lyon and unfortunately did not work out, he is "overthinking" in big games?
I feel like for Pep, it is more of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'.
I can see the influence Pep has had on the epl. More teams are now being brave by building up play from the back. The use of inverted fullbacks that Pep has made popular in the epl etc. The guy deserves a lot of credit for his work. Even if his critics say he always goes to big teams, true, but he always leaves a blueprint of dominating, exciting football. Personally, I enjoy watching Guardiola's teams play football regardless of whether they win or lose. They are a joy to watch and I learn a lot tactically speaking from his teams.
Finally, if you look at Pep's teams, they never stop playing even when they are losing a game. For example, the game against Leicester. Even in the last few minutes, you could see Guardiola urging his team to keep playing, to keep attacking. 85 minutes in and you are losing 5-2, yet you keep encouraging your players not to sulk and stop playing but to keep going. This is one of the things that I admire about Pep and his teams. They always keep playing even when it is clear cut that they will lose the game. Another good example is the champions league game against Tottenham 2 seasons ago. City kept playing and attacking Tottenham even in the dying minutes and Sterling scored the goal that would have taken city through but VAR happened.
The mentality that Pep puts in his teams is really admirable.

Mantorras Montquilla In one year, he went from being a youth coach to winning a treble with a team that had just come off a season full of disappointments and internal struggles. He booted Ronaldinho and Deco out-which many saw as suicide at the time-and started a first division debutant in a Champions League final. Say what you will about his recent struggles at City, but it’s downright hilarious to argue that Guardiola isn’t a top manager.

The premier league has come across various coaches with beautiful tactics, i remember when Conte's 3-4-3 was used snd it stunned the league, into adapting. With pep, the 17/18 season came, i remember telling myself "Wtf is this" to man city's dominant playing style. My thing here is Managers that come to the premier league with a beautiful style of play are already phenomenal in my book.
For a league to have to adapt to the way you play, yes we can say man city aren't as scary as they were before but, teams still have to set up for Pep's side, shows everything. Watching leeds v city was amazing, fantastic video, and even a more fantastic league.
This is part of the reason why the game's so beautiful.

awesome analysis, could you do one for aston villa vs liverpool. just astounding how big teams like liverpool and mancity who had been superior for 2- 3 seasons, gets total humiliation by team lesser than them. is it due to player fatigue caused by compressed schedule in the early seasons? its acknowledged that leicester goals came from 3 penalties and villa scored from 3 deflection, but they still played well against city and liverpool

    • @fwfeo

Liverpool were very stubborn with the high line when they had a failed pressing situation, thus Villa Midfield would make nice diagonal passes behind the line under no pressure.
I think this was due to happen, because I've seen the previous games and there was always a few very close calls that somehow didn't come fruition.
Villa was primed and ready to execute and they did it almost perfectly!
Liverpool got exposed for replying too much on a risky strategy and not having the willingness and flexibility to adjust to the obviously indefensible situation.
This system only works when you can press almost perfectly and your defenders and the keeper are aware and ready to clean up the few chances, but that day was not the day and I hope Klopp devises a back up plan for the off days, because we have the players that can win us games in different ways. No need to be exposing yourself when you can adapt and neutralize the obvious threat.
