Dick, Again a very, very nice project. I really like your -endless- supply of Bog Oak. The deep black wood holds indeed some very interesting patterns and even colors. Combined with the shape and the gilding… well it was a pleasure to see your work and the end result! Thanks for sharing, __Frank
My pleasure Frank! I think you will appreciate the design of the next BIG project, that I’m working on currently - just remember ‘the very inverted pointy piece’ it’ll either be the next video or the one after 😁😁😁
Thanks Pat. Short video that one. Be a couple of weeks till the next one. It’s a LONG make! You’ll see what I mean when you see it! I think I must be made doing what I’m doing!
@@johnswettenham4560 🤣🤣🤣 kinda used to the cold now. I’m down in the South East of England, so we get the fairest weather of the UK, only a few bitingly cold days when the wind is blowing combined with a low temperature. I have high hopes for a really long admiration comment from you on the next or next but one video, that will come out in probably a couple of weeks from now - for your memory banks - spiky infinity piece - that’s not it’s name, but an avid description 😁
@@WoodWithD I’m looking forward to it, along with any other videos you post, they are so enjoyable and informative. Does bog oak cost much over there? Cheers
@@johnswettenham4560 depends on what grade you get, yes a fortune for tone wood - the stuff that’s suitable for musical instruments. I buy middle of the range for wall handing pieces and other pieces I don’t want big splits in, but mostly I buy the discard stuff fairly cheaply on saw milling days, dry it out over a few years and try and make something out of the strange shaped pieces that have shrunk massively as the moisture releases. With a bit of imagination you can create all sorts 😁😁😁
I have a good friend who tells me to smash a hammer to pieces of wood I turn with lots of cracks and holes. After watching this great video, I’m having feelings of not listening to him anymore and possibly letting him go. This vase is beautiful and well done. The gilding I must say is very satisfying.
Well yes, tell your ‘friend’ to go to hell to be honest! Most all things can be saved or salvaged, unless they really as terrible! Satisfactions what we need 😁😁😁👍
I haven't got a single iota of artistic creativity in me, so I really enjoy what you guys do with gnarly pieces of wood like this guy in Brazil th-cam.com/video/l5fiYfcRNfw/w-d-xo.html . It is your creations. Tell your friend to bugger off. Cheers
🙋♂️🏴 Fantastic what a beautiful piece of art you have created. It's amazing how you transform what looks a dry drab piece of wood into a rich smooth vase.
Beautiful work Dick. The vase is lovely. Pretty that wasn’t you doing the gilding at the end. Very nice touch to finish it off though. Adds a major touch of elegance.
Arh you see Doug, Lenore is my secret weapon, took a lot of training to get as good as she is a gilding and I can’t say I’d have the patients for it, so she can gild everything she wants ☺️☺️😁
That lathe steady really coming into its own, great little build that was. Really paid for itself I’m sure. Love the finished product as ever. Loads of character and bet it’s something you could pick up and study, then another time fine something different you’d missed first time with all the cracks and tones going on in there.
So beautiful! The design is fabulous, simple enough to let the wood shine! Did you build the lathe steady you used? Could you post a link? I'm going to check out you home page, but sometimes they can be hard to navigate. Thanks!!
Hello Richard- that BOG OAK vase is stunningly beautiful. Nice form, pleasing proportions, and pretty inside. I also enjoyed the bit showing how the inside was made shiny. Please show more of that. Do you ever make the huge cracks shiny? (I'm sure that's more difficult than the it sounds) ....Gem.
Hey Gem, thanks for your lovely comments as always. Short video this week and will be a couple of weeks at least till my next one, as the current project is a big job! It’’s quite the process to gild something like this, done over several sessions. Lenore has a degree in restoration of oil paintings including gilding, so a bit challenging to condense that for a TH-cam tutorial on gilding 🤣 though I imagine someone has. I see a lot of turners attempt gilding, some with reasonable success, others attend weekend courses to hone the skill. 😁
@@WoodWithD A guess- it's a boomerang that has been cast out of resin in your new pressure pot. Clear resin surrounding the little off cuts of wood that is too small to work with, and you don't want to throw in the wood stove. 🙄🤣🤣🤣
