  • What is the hardest wood you have ever turned? Well for me it's this one, Angelique, we all know woodturning yew can be touch but it's not even close. I think I lost count of how many times I had to sharpen my gouge. Anyway, can I pull off a segmented bowl using two of the hardest wood about?

    ANGELIQUE - A short story. Since dinosaurs roamed, my family have been in the architectural millwork, renovation, preservation biz at significant scale, mostly in New Orleans. You may know, the city was built on a sand bar between river and swamp with a miserable sub tropical climate. Most of the early structures were constructed of Swamp Cypress with some Southern Pine or Red Oak timbers brought in from the countryside. So much of the slow growing Cypress was depleted that substitutes for the weather resistant lumber were needed. Hondurans Mahogany was imported until it was in short supply. Various lumber speculators tried their hand at filling the gap and at one point, a privateer showed up at the docks with a boat load of what was then a relatively unknown species - ANGELIQUE. He had it hauled to our facility and contracted to have it re-sawn and planed into manageable dimensions. When the lumber baron got the bill for all the saw and planer blades, he elected to abandon the entire lot where it sat in the racks for 50-ish years. It's tough stuff, very weather resistant, but ridiculously hard on tools.

    New subscriber here. I've watched quite a few of your videos now and I am really impressed! I saw your losing fight with the Forstner bit yesterday... I'm sure that's still sore!
    Today's offering is just beautiful. When I saw that dark brown plank at he start I didn't hold out much hope, but wow! Was I ever wrong! This is stunning! And you are right, that second piece of Angelique between the Yew and the unusual "UFO" shape really set it apart from run-of-the-mill bowls.
    I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your back-catalogue and seeing what you come up with in future!
    Have a great holiday!

    Good job Mike.
    Looks a bit like mahogany, central americas Honduras is where most of it came from.
    Being so old wood does get tough to turn. Downin Oz we have a ton of hardwoods but I haven’t experienced the sharpening up frequently like you had. Probably a high silica content as well.
    Finished bowl looks like a discus.and throwing one of course is all about balance.
    Thanks for sharing.
    I’ve seen a few turners using a 10 mm spindle gouge for starting roughing cuts, a modified pull cut, wood seems to come off beautifully. Just a thought, see Richard raffle n and tomislav tomivic.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Greg, pull cuts were working quite well and I do know what you mean with regards to the spindle gouge, I have watched Richard and had a few conversations with Tomislav. They usually use the spindle gouge to rough out the outside of the bowl as theirs has a fingernail grind on so it has a long cutting edge. I have considered this but at the moment do not do enough wet turning to make it worth the effort. All the best, Mike

    What a STUNNING bowl. Adding the Yew was a great idea & I think was a 'clincher' for the finished piece. When such hard wood is encountered I am always surprised by the apparent reluctance of most wood turners to turn to using Carbide tools, to me they invariably are used to stunning effect. Obviously throwing keys etc into this bowl is unlikely to cause much harm, but it does look stunning & worth all the hard work, plus, what a brilliant finish can be produced on it. Hope your hand healed well too. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Morning Don, a lot of traditional turners believe that carbides are beneath then or they see them as beginners tools. To me they are just a tool like anything else, they are good at some things and not great at others but used in the right way they can produce some beautiful shapes. This is still one of my favourite shapes to make. It retains the weight of the wood and although very simple the design just pleases me. I really must make one for myself. All the best my friend. Mike

    Really enjoy your work. Thanks for sharing. Curious why with the Angelique you didn’t just go on using the carbide, since it was taking so much resharpening with the other tools. What are the trade offs?

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, the carbides cut faster but do tend to leave a lot of tear out on the surface which makes the sanding a real pain. All the best, Mike

    Lovely project. Looks great. Has given me some ideas for joining up various bits of wood I have. I know there is some reluctance to using carbide from some woodturners, but why keep wrecking expensive gauges when it is probably quicker to rough out with carbide on very abrasive hardwoods, just use the right tool for the job. Keep up the good work and enjoy your break.

    I don't mean to be "that guy"..... I'm just passin along some info 😁
    I know it was literally a few grains, so shouldn't make much difference; but the maker of Titebond glues said that salt should not be added to their glues, that it does somethin to the chemical composition of the glue and can weaken the bond. Might not make much of a difference in flat work like I do, but when parts are spinnin in front of ya on a lathe it would make me think twice........ I'm brand new to turning tho, havent even made space for the lathe yet 🤦😆
    Not tryna be that person like I'm sayin ya did it wrong....... just wanted to pass along the info...... there's a lot of forces at play on a lathe, I don't want somethin to crack and come loose hurting someone. But it literally was only a few grains, so maybe it's ok 😁

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Knowledge is power and never apologize for passing it on. I guess as long as the grain is small enough you can use anything, perhaps sand would work but the salt is such a small amount and localised it should be ok. Again, thanks for letting me know, all the best, Mike 🙂

    That was a very good choice of accent wood for that bowl. Stunning. I wish I was more of a “purist” when it comes to turning. I only own one bowl gouge and I stink at sharpening so I do the majority of my turning with carbide tools and a scraper. After I learned how to re sharpen carbides, I save tons of money. I really need to press myself to use my bowl gouge more. Excellent as usual Mike.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha thanks my friend 😀. I started with carbide tools as they were a good cheap option. When I first started with a bowl gouge I was so so bad, but I persiveared and slowly got better. Sharpening takes a lot of practice and I now use a jig which makes life so much easier.

  • @loopinnerthe
    @loopinnerthe ปีที่แล้ว

    Mike that was an inspired choice of shape. You left plenty of that gorgeous angelique on show and I agree with you the inlay just doubles the wow factor all over again as the two different textures and colours meet.
    I wonder what you can do with the offcuts? Can you make a number of something matching but much smaller and somehow make them all together into a set?
    In my mind this would be good for car keys etc but perhaps it deserves a much more grandiose purpose; like the base for a properly magic and fully working future divining crystal ball or some kind of fish bowl. Based on your close-up shots, I think teaming this with some kind of glass magnifying effect would really show up all of its inner beauty.
    Really enjoyed this one. Thank you for what you do.

    I love the bowl, very well done.
    Gorgeous grain and colour. We can see the shavings with a fresh edge on the gouge and how fast they go from shavings to dust as the edge is dulled by the dense wood.
    The wood looks terrific with some finish. We cannot tell from the still pictures how hard this wood is to turn. I have a piece of black palm awaiting a future project. From what I have read this is also difficult to turn and creates just dust.
    With the HSS gouge dulling so fast, I would have used carbide.
    I have not heard of angelique before. It does not even appear on the US web sites I use for pictures of wood species.

    What a beautiful piece! I have been using Titebond glue for several years. All varieties are good. The 3 is waterproof and, even glue ups that are left out in the weather for years, the bond is good as when first done. The 2 is water resistant and the original is an indoor glue. I have tried to break the bond and the wood will tear out before you break the glue bond with all three varieties. The only thing I don't like about the 3 is that it is thinner than the others which can get messy. The 2 is thicker and does not run as badly. Gorilla glue wood glue is gaining popularity in the States. I haven't used enough of it yet to have a firm opinion but have not had any problems with it so far.

    I see you using a couple of grains of salt between the joints. Does this have an adverse effect on the glue and or the wood now or down the road?

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jim, it is not advised by the manufacturer but people have been doing this for years with no adverse effects. The salt grains are so small and so localised that a problem if it did occur would not effect the whole piece, just a small 1-2mm area in the wood. All the best, Mike

    Mike, if I may, ....when working different steels, I had the same difficulty with harder materials. Now, I'm not sure if this will work with wood but when I had harder steels I slowed down the rpm and increased the pressure of the cutting tools. Granted, with a metal cutting lathe it's not as dangerous putting pressure on the cut because I didn't put my hands in the work. The tools were mechanically worked with hand cranks and the tailstock. I used carbide or cobalt tools/inserts and just added pressure to a slower rpm. If you try this, I hope you can do it safely.
