- Tufnol is VERY hard, tough material, it's possible to turn, but tough on the turning tools. I've included a sharpening count in this video for your viewing pleasure, and there's a little bit of gilding gold leaf in it too.
Great video Dick! The colour change must be something to do with the heat being generated at its being turned away. Fascinating stuff!
I guess so, but it’s still messing with my brain 🧠 🤣🤣🤣
@@WoodWithD yeah, my brain hurts too! That yellow reminds me of a sulfur mine near a volcano. You have any idea where that wood grows?
@@gemofthewoods5802 in a factory 🤣🤣😁
I know this is a very late comment.
I have a lot of experience with fabric Tufnol.
Tufnol's natural colour is that yellow (and it turns our workshop yellow regularly). It goes brown after long term exposure to UV. So that slug has been sitting around for many years.
Heat doesn't effect the colour, until it burn.
I've been going through your back catalogue after being recommended your channel by Mike. This is one of my favourites so far - loved hearing about the process as you turn. Looking forward to continuing the journey through your channel!
Fantastic Lois! Thank you for joining me and thanks to Mike too. I await further comments when you find other pieces and like them more than this!
The colour and stratus texture reminds me of old phenolic resins of vintage electronics era. Super KOOL!
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Super Kool 🤣
Thank you Nemo 😁👍
I have a lot of experience with fabric Tufnol.
Tufnol's natural colour is that yellow when cut (and it turns our workshop yellow regularly). It goes brown after long term exposure to UV. So that slug has been sitting around for many years.
Heat doesn't effect the colour, until it burns and turns to charcoal.
The brown section was not from cutting, it's just the nature of the cotton sheets used in the lay up.
Tufnol is really easy to turn, with metal turning techniques.
Finally a dam good answer! Thank you! 🤗
If I get any more I’ll make sure it goes to a metal turner 🤣🤣👍
@@WoodWithD Not a problem. My family has been dealing with them for 60+ years.
Tufnol have been around for well over 100 years.
It's an interesting old factory and process to make the finished products.
@@agentcrm I imagine it is! But, as per vid, I’m not terribly keen on the smell 🤣🤣👍
Ended up beautiful but if half of what you’re saying is true then I want no part of it. You did a great job of it. Thanks for the honest assessment of the material.
Yup, defo NEVER ever doing it again! 🤣
the makeup of the fabric showing through is a fabulous look isn't it.
you did well with it in the end mate. i turned one item with it and just used a big HSS scraper that got regularly sharpened.
But the smell dude! Sooooo bad! Even through some serious breathing apparatus!
And the shavings colour!?
Lovely piece, incredible finished product.
I would bet the yellow colour is the resin used for the casting, the darker is the layers of matting but the brighter yellow is the resin binder original colour.
That would explain it. But still weird!
Wait a minute, it's not wood? I gotta stop these videos late in the day.😵💫
@@gemofthewoods5802 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great work with this piece. Although it was a challenge, it turned out awesome.
Yup, will fun at shows when you get turners come up identifying the woods, to try and tell me what wood that is 🤣🤣🤣
Tremendous result! I am not entirely sure the juice as worth the squeeze? 24 sharpenings? HOLY COW! But in the end the result is amazing!
Yup, defo NEVER turning any ever again! But I feel I have to try these things when opportunity presents 😁
Very Nice 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe. But regarding the smell of the material. Horse manure stinks but when fed to rose bushes the result is beautiful roses. Stinks while processing but the results are beautiful,
Awww thank you yeagerxp, but never touching this horse poop again 😮😁👍
🍻😃
Her guilding really made it pop!
I do love that about the gilding on most all the but she gilds 😊 👍👍
Another great project/coverage, Richard. When I saw to rough piece I was tempted to hunt one of them down however you convinced me otherwise. If I want to experience it again I will just watch your video once more… I also think that with your turning experience you made something beautiful out of it, not sure if many can reproduce that. Me certainly not. I was also wondering about the color. My bet would be that as it is a artificial make, the structure change significantly when being shaved. Light simply reflects differently on the shaved material than on the bowl. My 2 cents. Have a great weekend ahead!__Frank
Thanks Frank, still blooming bazar! 🤣🤣🤣
Shame it lost all those colours but another great piece.
You with your comment about a wet fart 🤣 there’s me thinking I can see the shape of a spaceman in the bowl right before you polished it lol.
Couldn’t believe the number of times you had to sharpen your chisel 😮
Yup, one’s chisel need sharpening often 😮😁👍
Looks fantastic!😍
Maybe heat generated from the chisel makes the resin come to the surface, turning the shavings yellow, it's Bizarre 🤔
That’s a possibility. Thank you Steve 😃😃😃
The smell remind you of TCP? should do, the phenol makes it so, to my hooter is a nice smell but depending on the layers and what was the filler will give you a different feel. looks loverly.
Yup, strong TCP smell! Not so nice for me unfortunately, but not gonna do any more to see if I can find a nicer smelling bit 🤣🤣🤣
Pretty cool vid m8👍
Just like you mate! Pretty cool 😎 😁👍
Very smart bowl, but it’s true you absolutely stank and even TomTom (my cat) ran away when you were near. Lovely one off piece. 👏
🤣🤣🤣😁
I see comedians run in your family...that comment was a laugh out loud😻
The colour difference between was
Odd indeed! Will you really never do another piece in this ? Came Out really Well. Or is it more hassle than worth?
How many times would you sharpen while working on a “normal” piece in comparison to this?
Keep up the great work. Great to see subscriber count rising too 😃
Thank you Michael!
NEVER again! The smell was SO bad!
On softwood, something of the same size, maybe 6 sharpening max!
Speak real soon buddy 🤗
Is it related to Phil Tufnell - the cricketer? 😀😀
No, it’s a brand name Tufnol 😁🤗🤗
Hi Richard. Great job turning that stuff. Is that like the old Bakelite I’ve never heard of it. The bowl ended up amazing you and Lenore work so well together. Was this for you or a customer. Thanks for sharing and your explanation of what and how you do things. Cheers🇦🇺
Hey John, not for a specific customer but will go on my pitch at a show for sale. Next video is something for me for a change 😄
@@WoodWithD looking forward to something you make for yourself cheers🇦🇺
@@johnswettenham4560 it’s a necessity piece - you’ll see shortly 😁👍
nick same here
great job
💨 💦 Thanks Mark 😁👍
Gold leaf helped the look.
Thank you Brad, turned out okay in the end 😁👍
As Mike Holton says, the heat of the shavings could affect the colour. But also, it is a characteristic of some plastics to take on a paler colour when stressed such as stretching. The solid block isn't stressed but, obviously, the shavings are.
Okay... Back to the video now...
Watched it through now. I love the colour and the fine 'grain' appearance. Beautiful bowl. I can imagine the smell. I've cut bone and horn with power tools and that's pretty bad.
Thank you for explaining that Ron! Yer, I’ve cut some bone and I think bone wins for a worse smell, but not by much! 🤣👍
@@WoodWithD I've seen some beautiful work with resin and I'd love to try it. My problem is what to do with the shavings. I did see an ad for 'ecological' resin. I emailed to ask in what way it was ecological. No reply, so I'm guessing it might be a claim they can't backup. It's a bugger.
@@rontocknell5400 yup, sounds like just a sales pitch! Hey Mr Eskimo, see this ice, this ice is very special, it’s frozen in a slightly different way to your ice, therefore you must buy some!
@@WoodWithD It might be genuine. There might be other reasons they didn't respond. It just doesn't give me much confidence in their claim.
Nice! That was probably about £300 worth of tufnol :D
Wow! Now that I did not know! The guy I got it from has at least 1 more blank of it, and is charging nowhere near that price! Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll put you in touch 😁 👍👍
I’m 55 years old , why did I snigger when you said “sounded like a wet fart” ?
🤣🤣🤣 I’m 45, why did I say it, keep the sound in, or comment? I tell ya why, cause we have a sense of humour 😁😁😁👍
I genuinely did not think you would need to sharpen your tools that much!! I've been thinking about making my own Micarta from old clothes or paper and resin, do you think that would be as hard to turn as this? :P
The tuffnol actually reminds me of Partridge wood :)
I don’t think it would be as hard to turn. Steve had another piece of that Tufnol. I think you should get it off him! For the experience of turning it 🤗
Amazing
Thanks mate
Great finish on that piece wow. Wet farts!!
It did sound like that! Not that I’ve ever had one ☝️ 😮😀😁
Good job done at least it didn't stay enteritis yellow
Recon it would have looked nice as a crazy yellow 🤪🤣👍
🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
At 11:38: I am never turning tufnol again/the smell....get the cedar shaker in the workshop. Make six more and shake them....or wear a gas mask? Luckily I don't have smell-a-vision. 😐
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 nope, still NEVER turning Tufnol again
great Video Richard, note to self don't purchase tufnol
Absolutely 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely amazing 🤩
😁😁😁
