    Episode 265 of Love At First Scent
    This was a TH-cam Live broadcast streamed on Tuesday 29th March 2022. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this episode, I reviewed the new Guerlain Epices Exquises, composed by Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk.

    Here’s the blotter update:
    - I realise in the video I praised this scent for being rather restrained and not going crazy with the volume knob. But I can’t stop myself wishing that it projected just a tiny bit more and was possessed of a bit more ‘presence’. Please don’t misunderstand me: it’s enjoyable and friendly and gracious throughout its development. But perhaps it does reach its final, tranquil, ‘haze of musk’ phase a touch too quickly. Maybe the idea is that, after the coffee and the hospitality comes the peaceful siesta. If that’s the case, then it’s been pulled off very well. But I’ve never been one for afternoon naps myself. Still, a definite highlight of this particular range.

    It is compelling and intoxicating. At first I thought it was weak and boring. Not sure why, but now it is utterly astounding to me. I am glad to have it.

    I really enjoyed watching this as I prepared to update my profiles on other media! Yes, the cardamom is a delightful, unexpected twist often served in Middle Eastern coffee, and it actually balances perfectly, not only in taste, but also in effect, because cardamom has relaxing properties! Phlur makes a nice spicy scent called Moab (unless it's been discontinued by now?). Guerlain Epices Exquises sounds like another must-try, and I tend to be partial to fragrances by Guerlain. Thanks for another great, informational video, complete with scent notes!

    Excited to hear about Epices Exquises. Sounds a lot like Madras Cardamom (Zegna), which is also very elegant and ethereal. Personally, I am glad Guerlain is still using the "oriental" descriptive. I don't understand why a small group of people should dictate our language in an Orwellian/1984 way. Eau des Iles (Maitre) was the first coffee-prominent scent, way back in the 80s.

    • @Persolaise

      Thanks for watching, Dan. I think what's happening is that the number of people objecting to 'oriental' no longer counts as a small group.

    i'm absolutely looking forward to sampling this. i've always liked the idea of 'Guerlain' more than the actual products of that house, although i've certainly found exceptions.

    Apologies for commenting so many months later-thanks so much, sounds interesting. I think Santal Royal smells fine, but I think I liked Oud Essentiel more. Love Cuir Intense, the only one in the collection I do own, even though it seems to not be as popular as the others, so I fear for its place in the collection. Because they are pricey for my means-though not really relative to other brands, niche or otherwise-even though I would love to have this one, I feel I should get a spare bottle of Cuir Intense until my fortunes improve. It's loud, but beautiful, and I do not want to be without it. My bottle could last decades, but I know myself and end up using more than I should, spraying it more liberally at home just because I enjoy the smell. But I do love many spices perfumes, and would like to smell this at some point.
    Thanks for your hard work and lack of off-putting arrogance. Always wonderful to listen to your opinions, agree or disagree. Please be well.

    I’m confused about the negative sentiments around the term “Orient”. The term has ALWAYS signified a host of venerable and regal concepts/sentiments such as mysteriousness, elegance and sophistication. I don’t get how it has come to mean anything negative. Sad is the age where the “sensibilities” of brutes castigates those of the erudite… yet here we find ourselves.

      Saying that using term “oriental” for perfumes is offensive is preposterous and ridiculous! Honestly. I would not be offended if someone would refer to fougeres or chypres as “occcidental”What’s offensive about “oriental”? Moreover IMO term “ambree” is narrower that “oriental”.

    Tested it today. This is a beautiful fragrance in my opinion. I do however completely understand what you meant by the comment that “it’s not perfect”. I do feel it misses one final accord to wrap it all together and ground it firmly. But very very nice nonetheless.

    Just tried it today. Weirdly, it reminded me of Oud Rosewood of Dior. Please consider doing Top 10 sandalwood scents. By the way, I just found out a new brand called Olibanum, founded by the founder of Histoires de Parfums. All the perfumes involve olibanum.

    • @Persolaise

    How did you find the overall longevity (in terms of approx. hours) when it was on skin? Hopefully it's not a deal breaker given the price, afterall this isn't intended to be an Aqua Allegoria ;).

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I could have done with it not rushing to the drydown quite so quickly.

  • @ipurvi

    So the official notes provided for our Lost wonderer were oriental, honey, spices etc - and we instead chose to describe it as Amber for the same reason. It is offensive as well as vague. What is really the point?

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The debate will continue for quite some time, I feel.

  • @LiaAndrews

    I avoid using "oriental" because I don't want to offend anyone, but I do feel its loss. My understanding is that it refers to a classical structure of citrus top notes, floral heart, and an amber base. There is also a nostalgic feeling to the word. Of a time extravagant launches and higher perfume budgets. "Amber" doesn't do it for me.

      @@Persolaise thank you Persolaise ❤️. Oh PS I just got Aqua Allegoria Nerolia Vetiver and love it. I love all the AAs and use them all the time in spring summer. This one is very unusual and much more of a statement than all the other AAs. It’s growing on me each day. PS. This is Mona Chipman. I’m just playing around with this nom de plume for a bit. 😉☺️

    Nice insight. Btw, Orient means East (the part of the sky where the sun rises), as opposed to Occident (the part of the sky where the sun sets). Both are terms from Latin. Changing East to amber is nonsense. In perfumery Orient/Oriental is also a recognition to the part of the world where perfumes originated in the first place. People should read more and stop being in a constant self-defensive stance that makes them see offensive at every corner. Cheers!
