@@datguy8460 I think that's an interesting take with a lot of truth to it. The hunting mechanics give off the wrong idea about Arthur's prowess as a hunter. While we're given the ability to use different baits and craft various ointments, in-universe, I imagine he isn't well-versed in these areas unlike maybe a Hosea. I prefer him looking like a simple blue-collar working man with outlaw-y coats, vests, boots. Which is one reason I'm disappointed the more stereotypically western outfits were sort of lacking compared to the first game and the focus seemed more on the crafted hunting garments/sets that make Arthur look ridiculous walking around towns and even at camp.

So for Dutch’s gang to stroll through wearing coats, and rugged shirts, and holsters. It’s the equivalent to how gangsters wear tracksuits, and hoodies in today’s society.
You've got to remember, the average life expectancy wasn't because people only ever lived to 50, it's because infant/child mortality was insanely high. People over 50 would not have been a rarity, if you made it past childhood you had a good chance of making it into your 70's or older, just like today.
It was due to high infant mortality rates, yes, but there were other factors contributing to it. Mainly a lack of antibiotics and other medicines. Injury and illness killed way more middle-aged adults than they do today.
@blackdragon5274 chance's of making past 60 would've had to of been unlikely because of the average age of death being about 48 in 1899 and as of today it's 79, that pretty much means that 60 back then is like equivalent of being 100 in the u.s today 🤔?
3:02 no, as a 6’1 man who has survived a bear mauling, trolley crash, shot to the shoulder and cliff diving from 1899- that is _in fact_ possible. You just have to be 6 ft tall
1:05 I like how when he translated kilograms to pounds, he used a bald eagle sound effect and when he translated pounds to kilograms, he used sword fighting sound effects.
There is some inaccuracy in Arthur's "gunslinger outfits." Like his hat being made from leather which would be uncommon due to leather being a material that conducts heat and hats were usually made from cotton or some other fabric that wouldn't conduct as much heat since most working class people worked in the sun and didn't want to get hot. And his shirt being a full button down style would have been seen mostly in Europe, most shirts in 1890s America were half button down/pullovers style, aside from that Arthur's clothing is pretty accurate
In Australia we’ll either have a rabbit felt hat or a straw hat leather hats are a bit more durable and they’ll usually be crushable, seen as he’s moving about quite abit packing would be a bit easier not to fuck up his hat
Pretty Accurate until I customise him...............But I don't make him absolutely ridiculous because that ruins immersion, I just make him stand out a little bit while still making him look professional. I even customise his revolvers and gives each of them a name
Fun fact about John (has nothing to do with video but anyway) John’s “Rip van winkle” name actually has a meaning to it van winkle is an old tale with someone having a nagging wife or lover John could’ve thought about this because he thinks Abigail is like that.
"Rip Van Winkle" is a short story by the American author Washington Irving, first published in 1819. It follows a Dutch-American villager in colonial America named Rip Van Winkle who meets mysterious Dutchmen, imbibes their strong liquor and falls deeply asleep in the Catskill Mountains.
A note on Arthur's formal outfits: When Arthur wears a tuxedo it would actually be almost a faux pas, because the tuxedo was considered a semi-fornal suit at the time (the name tuxedo didn't come into use until the 1900s). The socially expected outfit for a formal evening dinner/ball/party - especially one hosted by a prominent figure - would be black shoes with spats, black trousers, a white shirt with starched cuffs and bib, a low-cut waistcoat, a high starched collar (separate to the shirt, as it would be buttoned on), a white bowtie, and a tophat. Gloves and a cane would be common accessories but not mandatory
In the video he was shown wearing formal evening wear: A black (swallow) tail-coat, white shirt, bow tie and waistcoat which is time-frame appropriate, he wasn't wearing a Tuxedo
the amount of research Rockstar had to do for this game shows even if it is a bit hollywoody you gotta appreciate the amount of effort and work was put into every little detail
on durability-gunfighters were notouriously hard to kill, i cant recall his name but one gunfighter was shot in the eye, the bullet travelling through his skull through the other end-he survived to die of old age, another had his eyes burnt through by the flaming debris left by a shotgun being shot right next to him-went on to die of old age
@@Boileryard it's some crazy shit indeed. Although, it's probably just luck (just like an old lady smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day and living 90 years), we have to consider they were particularly resilient (physically and mentally), matter of fact; every stage of humanity has had one branch who was extremely resilient, in the past age it was the warriors such as romans and fellas like that. In the wild west it was people like Arthur Morgan and in this day and age it's probably uhhh... I don't know, this generation is particularly weak-minded, but if you figure something out let me know... Well, I guess you get my point by now. cheers
also gonna add some radical facts to the clothes section, going over each of the 3 main gunslinger outfits (also Ik some nerd is gonna ask, yes the closed coat variant of the winter gunslinger worn during chapter 1 is counted as part of the winter gunslinger) Starting with just the Gunslinger-Many people at the time would've considered an outfit like this to be made for harsher weather, such as rain or light snow. Jackets were considered often to be a luxury to the middle and low class. Even a thin and beaten up one like Arthur's could've sold for anywhere from 60 to 130ish dollars in today's money. Using this we can assume Arthur's coat is either a hand me down from his father or a gift from a gang member, as Arthur is not the kind of guy to spend 100 dollars on a clothing item. It's also the buggiest outfit in the game, with many instances players have with the blue undershirt and sometimes even Arthur's arms clipping through during cutscenes and the gameplay following them. The summer gunslinger is pretty well talked about, but I will add that neckerchiefs were fairly expensive at the time, and seen usually as a more high class purchase, and any person of Arthur's middle-class of living would only be able to purchase 1, hence why Arthur doubles his as a bandana. As for the Winter Gunslinger, although very accurate, especially so in the chapter 1 closed variant, the coat Arthur uses would actually be fairly expensive, having fur on the inside would be seen as a luxury on it's own, but in contrast, expensive winter coats at the time were furry outside as well, whereas Arthur's is a cloth instead of a fur. Meaning whoever made the coat must've been really confused on his target audience.
@LeifTunteri-lm6un Not a bad thing at all. People have different views. And being religious doesn't make you a good person nor does being an atheist make you a good person.
In terms of dueling, the days weren't really that chaotic either. Just imagine it as you would imagine today. Most people wouldn't kill another person through out their lifetime, I think hunting was a lot more common though, so that would be the time when they shoot their guns. They also ABSOLUTELY wouldn't have the ammo to train! Ammo was real expensive, and buying ammo was hardly worth the price, even for hunting. So gun wielding experience was hard to come by.
@@Boileryard it might sound pointless, but it actually has a really important meaning. Earlier in the game, in a camp interaction, arthur says that when he dies, he wants to be faced to the west, to remember all the good times they had that way. But in the end, he dies facing the east, representing his redemption and change into a new person.
@@samdedmon8674 My guy it's just a sunrise. There's no super secret hidden meaning behind every single thing in the game. I admit the sunrise is rad af but there's really no hidden meaning here.
Button downs such as arthurs were rare in the US, bibbed shirts were more common. Arthur's leather hat would also be rare, as most hats were felt. The pants, boots, spurs and neckerchief are accurate though.
I'm making a video game called Super Arthur Morgan Adventures, It has arthur morgan, but in my alternate universe Albert Einstein makes a time machine and accidentally goes back in to time and cures arthurs tuberculosis, and then dracula appears and turns arthur into a got dam vampire. then it flash forwards to the year 8093 AD, and in this future most people are god dam robot terminators that look like arthur morgan, and Arthur has to save the enitre human race or will he side with the machines?!? it will have enjoyable sidequests such as stealing old ladies purses to buy money to smoke crack and cover several decades
I haven't watched the video yet but Arthur's initial/default look does have him wearing a leather hat, which I heard would've been very rare for the time. Also someone mentioned that button up shirts weren't common back then. So if both are true, then not exactly perfect.
One note I would say in terms of weapons is the addition of schofield. While it was a bit more uncommon it was still prominent in the west. So it wouldn’t be too unusual if Arthur had one. John W Hardin used one for many years before ending up in prison and after becoming a lawyer post prison he traded the schofield for a pair of colt lightnings
The heights in rdr2 are all over the place. In many cutscene’s different angles make characters have different heights from shot to shot however we can confirm Dutch is 6’0 or Rockstar wanted it to be that way because Benjamin Byron Davis told how Dutch had to be shorten because in real life Davis Is 6’6. So they had a second actor for mo-cap who was 6’0. He was used in the trolley and other missions. Dutch constantly seems to be taller than Arthur so I’d say he’s about 5’11 or 5’10 which is more likely for the time but still taller than most.
yeah, arthur is one of the guys you think is short/average due to his build when you see him from afar and then you realize he's taller than you and is just big as fuck. so def 5'10 or '11
in the 1899 when the game takes place Cuba just got its independence from Spain with help from the united states just a year prior to the events of the game the war ended with Cuba gaining independence and becoming a protectorate of the united states
In my opinion that Arthur is very historically accurate of how some men were of the 19th century. men did show a lot of their feelings Back then too. but Arthur body type is kind of like Eugene Shadows, a strong man from the 1890s. But men's clothing in the 19th century was very flamboyant stylish especially the gunslingers
Glad to see that the only picture most men had of their fathers is a mugshot after being arrested. I’m comforted knowing that things haven’t changed at all over the generations lmfao “for those who don’t understand reference Arthur’s father’s picture of Lyle Morgan at 9:16”
I would say that your breakdown of Arthur Morgan, when comparing with historical accuracy of that time-period, is pretty spot on, given my own research of how times were back then and what life was like. There is one area that I will disagree on, and that is Arthur's size. You say he is supposed to be 180lbs, but from my estimation, based on his wider build, I would say he is probably more around 230lbs - 250lbs, especially if you get him up to weight level 6.5 - 7.5, which to be honest I wish they'd actually given us pounds when showing Arthur's weight in the general stats area, instead of what they did. If you want another character to review, and I do not know if you've already covered him as I am new to your channel, but I would reccomend John Marston, seeing as you cover Arthur Morgan here, covering john next seems very appropriate.
John Marston would be fascinating to me if they can find some solid sources on the possible inspiration. I haven't encountered any historical figure so far that's poised to be a possible inspiration on John like Arthur has with Doc Holliday's TB and age of death.
to put it short, Arthur Morgan is a character and the main playable protagonist of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. A high-ranking member of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West while attempting to survive against government forces and other adversaries in a fictionalized representation of the American frontier. He is portrayed by Roger Clark through performance capture. Rockstar Games decided to focus Red Dead Redemption 2 on one character, in order to follow him more personally. They felt this was more appropriate for the narrative structure of a Western. Clark wanted to play Arthur in a manner that was complex enough for the player to choose any path and still have the character make sense. He took inspiration from actors such as Toshiro Mifune, John Wayne, and Rob Wiethoff, who played John Marston in the game and its predecessor. Arthur has received acclaim from critics, with his complexity and path to redemption most frequently the subject of praise. Reviewers also lauded him for bringing the world and other characters to life, and ranked him among the most iconic video game characters. For his work, Clark accrued numerous nominations and was awarded Best Performance at the Game Awards.
I didn’t know that Arthur was 6. 1 and yeah, he is a stocky, build character, which why he fits more on riding draft horses, such as the iron gray Ardennes in the raven Blackshire, which, by the way, those are my favorite horses for Arthur meanwhile me I’m 511 so I’m almost tall as him
Arthur is not 6'1". It should be noted that Benjamin Byron Davis, Dutch's voice actor, claims that Dutch is 6'0". And if you watch the cutscenes, it's clear that Dutch is a little taller than Arthur, making him around 5'10" - 5'11". So you are about as tall as Arthur.
fun fact: (8:19) in that exact moment of the mission, if you play on console, the controller vibrates like an accelerated heart when arthur's close to her ex
170 cm is 5'7, also I thought Arthur was 6'2 and 185. Just goes to show how all these height/weight reports on rdr charachters vary a ton, John's height is anywhere from 5'10-6'0, Arthur is anywhere from 5'11-6'2. There is no way to knkw for sure.
One big thing that people should keep in mind is that Arthur, and by extension the game and its world as a whole, are more inspired by westerns then the true 'wild west' of 1899. So a lot of it is a glamorized, and obviously unrealistic for the sake of good ol' fashioned fun. Because it's Rockstar it feels more like a GTA in the wild west than it does a classic western: the action is WAY over the top, Arthur kills more people than the populations of certain towns, and just the sheer amount of what he does and explores in the span of a year is enough for the lifetimes of at least 2 men. the one other thing I'll add is Arthur's height of 6'1. Being an outlier makes sense; part of the reason that Dutch uses him as the muscle of the group is because of his large stature and brooding nature. The giant horse that Hosea gives you at the beginning of the game is supposed to be a reflection of that, but since horses are living creatures in RDR, anyone can be tamed and ridden, they decided to make it optional rather than mandatory that you keep/use it.
@@jonicthehedgehog9379 hm, fair point, I would contend that they've known and raised/taught Arthur since he was a child, while Charles is a relatively recent addition to the group. Also Charles seems the type to be more hesitant to just rob and kill people for no reason, and I believe he's less inclined to use guns, maybe not as skilled or experienced. I'm not saying Arthur's stature is solely why he's the breadwinner or "Bodygaurd" of the group (technically Javier, Bill, Lenny, John etc. are supposed to be pulling their weight to but alas), but I think that was just a factor in why the character's designers made the choice to make him as tall as they did
You called the double action inaccurate, but colt had double action on the American market by 1877. And Micah has 2 model 1892 double action revolvers. The colt thunderer was common by the early 1880s.
Yall ain't to believe this, but I was so excited to play RDR2 watching only the thumbnail that almost I immediatly started the game with the Steam Launcher and all. In the minute 3:05 , I heard the shotgun load (For the Rockstar Games loading icon) and when this video showed the title "Skills" it triggered. Damn.
He survives bullets constantly, and falls off 10m+ high places onto his head and loses less health than after being shot. the biggest innacuracy is his plot armor but that is in the game in order for an average player to not die every 30 seconds.
I have to disagree that Arthur's 6'1", that's just a fan-based wiki making shit up. Javier is canonically 5'8" and Dutch is 6' so Arthur's more like 5'10" being between the two (in cutscenes at least)
Arthur is not 6’1 and the source is wrong He’s not that taller than other characters in the cutscenes (since everyone are the same same height regardless bc of the models) Dutch is 6’0 according to his voice actor Arthur seems to be at least 2 inches shorter (or more) than Dutch That sets Arthur at around a maximum of 5’10 Javier is confirmed to be 5’8 and looking at them in rdr2 The listing makes sense Average American was 5’7 back then, and Arthur wouldn’t tower over the average dude in anyway His weight also depends on the player But my estimate is he’d be around 190-200 since he’s on the stockier side
People lived through gun shots back then all the time but normally you were going to lose the leg arm idk about a shoulder though they didn’t have much medicine but they did know about using whiskeys and honey as a way to fight infection

But I'll take it like as more of a reliable source the words of the man acting as Dutch van der Linde over speculation till R* ret-con it and really states Arthur's height at 6'1 and 6'2 once and for all; or not.
Ight, the dead eye is meant to be his over the years skill, being able to think where to aim in such short amount of time. Also as you play the story further, you can hear a ticking sound get faster each time you use dead eye.
The correction I would state is Arthur would most likely carry Schofield - if his literal job for the gang was to be the enforcer and the gunfighter. He would 100% prefer that over a standard SAA. - Here’s my Head Canon Arthur Gunslinger: Schofield x2 Whichester ‘73 in .44-40 (Lancaster Repeater in blued stèèl) Springfield Rïfle W/Scope (Lore is he robbed the gun from a homesteader and had a gunsmith mount scope for him) Winchester Double Barrel Shotgun (variable on type of work)
Arthur Morgan is sort of based off of Jesse James in the Sundance kid. If he kinda looked at it in a way 2 and another thing is I forgot who John Marston is kind of based off of but Jack if. I'm correct his story matches up with all of them because the Maker outlaw sometimes they would have to lose their parents or they would have to run away from. Orphanages orphanage.
My favorite outfit in terms of Arthur is the summer Gunslinger matter of fact I believe his outfit was in the original trailer that's why I like it so much and it fits him perfectly
It appearing in the trailers is why one of the reasons I like to wear it so much. The same reason why I also appreciate the clean shaven look (although I almost always make him bearded). I would've loved the Summer Gunslinger more if it was green with an undershirt like the cover art.
People saying that 180 is too light forgetting individual differences. Not all tissue has the same density and for someone the size of Arthur it’s plausible that his build could be around 180-185. Course there’s some variation with how much you feed him but for his average size, I.e. not underweight or overweight I could see 180 being accurate, especially considering we don’t ever really see his legs and they likely wouldn’t be too big considering the activities he does.
@@dukemeiser19 In fact that's not true. People of the 1950's in average were ways smaller than latter century borns or XXIst century off springs. Just consult any Statistics Bureau no matter if in the US, countries in Europe and Asia. One good example is why, being the same original people, North Koreans and South Koreans are so different in heights, being the South ones much taller and this just after the War that started in the 1050's. SK people have food, nutrients and healthcare and genetically they evolved and become taller (a trend that averages since the beginning of times, as a Medieval european - 1200/1400's - height would not surpass 1,50m or 4,11 feet), as North Koreans lack the nutrients to keep their bodies developing, skeleton included ofc, as in a kind of darwinistic "natural selection" or similar evolutionist theories that showed up to be quite correct in these genetic aspects so far. I'm comparing two original same biological kinship people; this kind of measurement is inaccurate when applied to say south Europeans and Northern ones, just like South and North Americans. But we do know for sure we got taller since the first civilizations to nowadays in about 50 to 70 cms average. A very simply way to notice it is to compare, again in average, the height of a grandson and a grandfather with the father in between. The normal path is to get taller in every newer generation.
I was looking at the civil war records of my great great great grandfather, he was listed as being 5’11” and having blue eyes & black hair, he was born in Kentucky, fought for an Illinois unit and later settled and died in Iowa with his son later settling in Saskatchewan.
His blue eyes were not an outlier. At the turn of the 20th century the majority of americans were blue eyed. It would be an outlier if they were brown or green or even gray
may i mention the inaccuracy of the vanderlinde gang is because their goal before it started falling apart was justice for the people, so having a familial structure where women are heard would be in the idea of “we will prevail and secure a good future”, no matter how rare it was back then, certainly helped dutch gain people’s trust by being a golden tongue to everyone, arthur latched onto this idea and i’m willing to bet most of the gang also did

A note on Arthur's formal outfits:
When Arthur wears a tuxedo it would actually be almost a faux pas, because the tuxedo was considered a semi-fornal suit at the time (the name tuxedo didn't come into use until the 1900s). The socially expected outfit for a formal evening dinner/ball/party - especially one hosted by a prominent figure - would be black shoes with spats, black trousers, a white shirt with starched cuffs and bib, a low-cut waistcoat, a high starched collar (separate to the shirt, as it would be buttoned on), a white bowtie, and a tophat. also gonna add some radical facts to the clothes section, going over each of the 3 main gunslinger outfits (also Ik some nerd is gonna ask, yes the closed coat variant of the winter gunslinger worn during chapter 1 is counted as part of the winter gunslinger) Starting with just the Gunslinger-Many people at the time would've considered an outfit like this to be made for harsher weather, such as rain or light snow.

In terms of dueling, the days weren't really that chaotic either. Just imagine it as you would imagine today. Most people wouldn't kill another person through out their lifetime, I think hunting was a lot more common though, so that would be the time when they shoot their guns. The heights in rdr2 are all over the place. In many cutscene’s different angles make characters have different heights from shot to shot however we can confirm Dutch is 6’0 or Rockstar wanted it to be that way because Benjamin Byron Davis told how Dutch had to be shorten because in real life Davis Is 6’6. some things never change - John Red Dead Redemption
If you want another character to review, and I do not know if you've already covered him as I am new to your channel, but I would reccomend John Marston, seeing as you cover Arthur Morgan here, covering john next seems very appropriate.
i haven’t covered john yet, thanks for the suggestion and for the comment 🤙

The giant horse that Hosea gives you at the beginning of the game is supposed to be a reflection of that, but since horses are living creatures in RDR, anyone can be tamed and ridden, they decided to make it optional rather than mandatory that you keep/use it.
very true
the thing is tho, charles is the strongest in the whole gang
