      Yes but it doesn't seem to work if you have a mass of geometry in your slicing model. Then you need to use the boolean modifier. Part 2 of this video will show how.

    What i am facing the huge issue with is when i bisect if the model is a bit complex it will select vectors on its own and i cant deselect them. i need to be able to cut Z axis to equal pieces so i can later cut with CNC. You were close to explaining that at 2:42.. Cant find a better free slicing tool and this one is killing me for weeks now.

    • @notverygoodguy
      @notverygoodguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this might be a simple misunderstanding here. We are basically taking one object to cut through the other object by using a boolean. It can't select any other vertices regardless how complex the model is. It CAN get messed up if the geometry is a bit messed up though. If you can find a way to make your blend file available I would be interested to look at it. If that isn't possible perhaps you can post screenshots/video in the "Blender for 3d printing" Facebook group facebook.com/groups/1371247373254645 I will see it there. There are many things that can cause this but usually it is because the origin is in the wrong place or scale and rotation needs to be applied. It can also be if the normals are all wrong. Apply scale and rotation by going Object->apply->scale and rotation. Set the origin to the correct place by going Object->origin->origin to geometry. Firstly, I would suggest looking at the updated version of this video that doesn't use booltool here th-cam.com/video/j5at2x0CcX8/w-d-xo.html booltool can introduce some problems. Secondly did you model the car yourself or did you download the car model? Many car models I have seen are designed to render nicely but the geometry is all over the place with parts that are actually inside out and they are often made of many objects that are not actually connected. Booleans often do not work in these circumstances. If you can provide a link to the model or your blend file, I could take a look at it if you like.

There is no reason this method should not work, even if it is a shell. I presume you are just trying to cut this car in half or something. The issue you describe is typical of two things. Either the normals being the wrong way around or scale and rotation not being applied but if this an stl, I would imagine the normals to be correct. If you are just cutting it in half you could perhaps more easily do it with the Blender bisect tool or in your slicer. Prusa slicer is pretty good at it.

    any pointers for how much adjustment needed for the hollow cube? it was .6 for the potruding box then you changed it to .8 to the hollow part. is it always +.2?

    • @notverygoodguy
      @notverygoodguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on your printer. For a well calibrated FDM printer +.2 should be OK though remember this becomes only .1 space on each side of the cube so it can easily be too little. Maybe .3 is a better average. For resin printing I would recommend a bigger gap as the resin is likely to shrink somewhat during curing and how much it shrinks depends a lot on how you cure it and the type of resin.
      In the end +2 or +3 usually works for me and +4 for resin. That said, the cube approach does not work so well for me with resin but just pulling out the middle of the "cutting plane" as shown in this video works more reliably.
      Maybe I should do a video explaining these and demonstrating the difference.

      @@notverygoodguy im currently using resin and it hurts everytime my print fails bec of the 30 degree adjustment, im using a lot of supports by printing the entire model that i made so instead im thinking of cutting it in parts and print it on the plate and use the entire plate instead of having it focused on one single part which i imagine swings once the support snaps. id also get a free hole with the cube lock part which is automatically hidden upon assembly.
      im using halot, just a ff up, ive read some articles that resin do expands, so from ur end +3 ( 1.5 each sides) do the job right? so just the thickness of the cube regardless of the orientation. im using water washable btw.

      @@playerone6373 I haven't used water washable resins but have heard that they deform more but I would guess +3 would still be OK. If it isn't you can always file it down a bit after curing. You can certainly cut your model to help with print times but if you put the flat side directly on the bed you will need to compensate for "elephants foot" in your slicer. How did you model the model to be totally solid?

    • @notverygoodguy
      @notverygoodguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an interesting question and I can see that it is not obvious. When you make a model in Blender or much other software you really only model a skin- There is nothing inside. The boolean operation here creates a wall where the cutting tool was. So, after it is cut, you end up with two separate hollow objects but they look solid.
      Having said that, if you 3dprint your model, the slicer will assume you don't want it hollow and fill it up with stuff by default.
      I hope this makes some sense.

      Usually the 50% that I need and or tend to use for what I am doing.
      I am a bit new to the 3D printing though and we are learning on the job and on the fly.
      The Boolean tool is a tad different in 2.8/9/3.0
      I messed with 2.9 for a bit, but merging double verts is not the same as how 2.79 eliminates them.
      I have played with Z Brush but I also use Character Creator and have developed content for CC3/iClone 7.
      a lot of it is redundant, and or you can do the same things with Blender that you can do with other programs, and sometimes the other programs are easier, and or superior for certain things.
      I own and use 3D Coat for texturing, and you can model in it also, but I haven't taken the time to learn how to model in it, just like I don't and haven't taken the time to texture in Blender.
      It looks like Blender can be used that way now though.
      It also looks like I could Model, Texture, Render and make a game in UE5 if I, once again wanted to take the time to learn how to do all of that in one program.
      All in all I didn't mean to get on a rant.
      Thank you for answering the question. Yes it makes sense now. I haven't tried it in 2.79, and I don't think it will work that way in 79, so I might have to transfer models from 79 to 3 to do the cutting operation.

      I have been 3D modeling in Blender for about 14 years, but I started on it because I was writing a book about the ships that Germany had designed but didn't build at the beginning of WW2 so I wanted to make illustrations.
      I have since then just started the 3D printing about 6 months back so we can make the parts for our custom quad limb recurve archery bows that I designed.
      We are now working on several different designs of chess pieces and sets so we are printing them out along side our bow brackets.
      the cutting model issue is because of the Star Trek garage model kits that range up to a 13 foot 1/72 scale Enterprise model that I want to make and build on my You Tube channel.
      I plan to make some 6.5 scale ones to sell, and or sell the stl plans.
      I am looking at some 3000 to 11000 dollar machines that would make it possible to print larger sections.
      Right now I was looking at the design to put it together like a puzzle/model with a hundred pieces or more but the shrinkage and or swelling shifts are going to have to be figured out so we can make a model that is going to fit tight tolerances so it isn't a large number of parts that don't fit together.

    • @notverygoodguy
      @notverygoodguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This will most likely be because your normals are not correct or you haven't applied rotation and scale. To check for the normals check "Face orientation" in the viewport overlays (I show this near the start of the video) When you select "Face orientation" your model should go blue and there should be no red. If there is red you need to fix the model because some of the inside of your model is on the outside. If everything is blue then turn off face orientation and apply scale and rotation using the "Object" drop down menu.

    This is a bug this version?

    • @notverygoodguy
      @notverygoodguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure if it is a bug or if it is intended but I find the same results as you with 2.93 but not with 2.92 when using exactly the same blend file. You can get around this by duplicating your model and doing the operation twice, rotating your plane by 180 degrees in between operations.
      That procedure would be to duplicate your model (SHIFT D) and duplicate your cutting plane as well. Then cut the model as described in the video. You will end up with half your model and your plane will be a thin intersection. Delete this original plane. Then turn off your new half a model and turn on the duplicate model and the duplicate plane. Rotate your plane by 180 degrees and repeat the procedure. This will give you the other half of you model :)

      @@HervertPimentel I am not sure what you mean with the first part of your question but with the second part you just rotate the duplicate plane. I have found that this sometimes doesn't work either if you are only cutting part of a model e.g. an arm.

      I am guessing that you haven't installed the booltool addon as described. Or, possibly, sometimes after installing a plugin you need to restart Blender. In any case you can get around the whole booltool thing by not using it at all as described in this video th-cam.com/video/j5at2x0CcX8/w-d-xo.html

      You need to ensure "bool tools" is enable. Edit->preferences. Select addons and in the search bar, search for "bool" and booltools should appear as an option. Click the check box and you should have the slice option available.

Certainly the default cube doesn't work using the method described here on current versions of Blender (I have submitted a bug report for it). I just tried the default cube on the 3.1 and it works if you use the method without booltool mentioned above.
      I think the most likely areas for problems are if somehow your normals are incorrect. I would suggest turning on show "Face orientation" and making sure both your object and "cutting" plane are blue. The default cube definitely works even without increasing the amount of geometry it has so solving the issue with that should solve the issue for everything :)
