thats actually crazy.
Windows left the chat.

iPhone 9 is iPhone SE 2, which makes iPhone SE 3 iPhone 9s
The SE 2 and SE 3 use the design of the 8, so couldn't you argue they'd be part of the "Gen 5.5+" you mention? But I hear you, they could have called the SE 2 "iPhone 9," but I get why they didn't from a marketing perspective.
iPhone 9 is iPhone X and iPhone 10 is iPhone XR, iPhone SE 2 has iPhone 11 internals and iPhone SE 3 has iPhone 13 internals
Chinese case makers often call the first gen SE as 5SE 😂
There ain't an iPhone 9 buddy
Well thx, I’m rare for my iPhone 9s
I think after the iPhone 20, we should just completely switch to roman numerals, tbh
Not sure Apple would be happy naming the iPhone 30 "iPhone XXX"
And the iPhone 40 would be named "iPhone XL", then the 50 would be named "iPhone L" which sounds kind of a downgrade (but will the iPhone persists until that point ?)
@@Homme_De_Kro-mignon
Iphones will persist longer than this humanity and iPhones will be used even after humanity ends

“iPhone names make no sense”
*Xiaomi enters the room*
Xiaomi flagship naming makes sense, not midrange or budget categories.
enter oneplus nord series
Honestly, the "s" phones usually have the most improvements. The new "numbered" versions are usually considered better just because they have a new design.
Absolutely. The iPhone 6s and 6 are so radically different from each other. They're completely different generations. One is a modern smartphone and one is an early smartphone.
Ipad standard names really makes sense
I remember when the iPads first came out. We had the original iPad, then we got the iPad 2, and we were expecting the following iPad to be called “iPad 3” but instead they simply called it “the new iPad” and it kept that name until the 4th generation iPad came out.
I remember that too 😅 that was an odd one. They’ve given up on the numbering scheme in iPads which is nice, and I think they’ll eventually have to do it with iPhones too.
The background music kinda slaps
I hope in 2027 we get the IPhone XX for its 20th anniversary and from that point on the names will match it’s generation
you deserve more views and subscribers, your videos are very professional!
I appreciate that! I’m still pretty new to TH-cam, so hopefully they come as I put out more and more videos 😁
Explain how we went from “s” to “plus” to “pro” to “max pro”
“S” was used to differentiate between two generations. “Plus,” “Pro,” and “Pro Max” are used to distinguish between different models within the same generation. It’s all just marketing terms.
In ways retrospect.. S means the upgraded version, faster, and more professional. Then they changed the term to pro.. which is also upgraded. plus means it’s bigger. Then they shortly changed the term to max… just bigger. So now it’s pro and max
"iPhone names make no sense"
Samsung going from S10 to like S20 for no reason at all crying in the corner:
Haha, I actually don't have a huge issue with this, because the number always stood for something. 1-10 it stood for the current generation. And then for the 11th generation, they changed it to the year the phone was being released instead (2020).
I wish all apple devices were named: “product, product Pro, product SE” and just specifying the size or generation separately like in MacBooks, I don’t think the naming “Air” works anymore.
Skipping 9 to iphone X was for 10 anniversary for iphone
Yes, that’s true. I don’t have an issue with the iPhone X name, although I did read somewhere they originally wanted it ready a year earlier for the 10th generation. Not sure if that’s true or not.
@@nickbradleyI remember leaks before the iPhone 8 came out where the 8 was meant to get the design the X got
2:57
it’s XR, iPhone X, iPhone XS, IPhone XR
that aint exist anymore.
I couldn't agree more with so much of what was said in this video. Well done!
Thank you!
0:21 #16 is incorrect. That was the release of the iPhone 14 which featured the same camera cutout as the iPhone 15
The Dynamic Island was exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models, whereas the regular iPhone 14 (featured there) still had the notch.
Always a sense (Marketing, money) Windows made a 9th version of Windows, is Windows 8.1 or 10X, the iPhone x has lot of variant the worst one would be the 9

love your conten👍 need a videoabout iphone mini series 😬😬
I'll add it to the list! I love the iPhone mini
The fact that apple made the s series except for the iphone 7 and 8 until coming back again with the xs and then disappearing again
Steve Jobs literally called iPhone 4 the 4th generation… therefore the 3GS would be classified as a 3rd generation.
Exactly!
iPhone 4 has a hardware identifier starting from iPhone3,1, because it’s the 3rd generation. Everything else is marketing
@@PumpedSmartass Interesting. I’ve looked at those hardware identifiers, but they seemed to have some inconsistencies too.
@@nickbradley yeah, even hardware identifiers can be sometimes inconsistent. Apple has some unique ways and I had to learn it the hard way sometimes.
Maybe this could be an interesting topic for another video
@@PumpedSmartass I agree. I have an eventual follow up to this video in mind, and I think hardware identifiers should be involved. Thanks!
I thought iPhone SE was pretty much filling that space too at the same time as being it’s own thing
It is its own thing, but they're considered part of the existing generation when they're released. Which makes sense, since they have a lot of the same components as the current flagship when they're released, just in an older body style. So for example, the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all considered part of the 15th generation.
I think this video is about to explode with views
Fr
You jinxed it! 😉 haha just playing. I appreciate the kind words regardless of how this video performs!
im surprised by how not many people know that iPhone X has this name because it celebrates ten years since the first iPhone, for that reason I love this name
Good point! The iPhone X name makes sense
I would say the iPhone 7 has an updated design because it looks a lot better than the 6s and 6 before it
The iPhone 7 is too similar to the 6s despite the updated design.
We don’t talk about the android numbering system…
You have to rethink everything from the 11 to now. Apple changed up the naming scheme, they didn’t want to give the lowest model a name that would be seen as degrading. In reality the 11,12,13,14, and 15 are really the lower spaced variants. The 11 pro to the 15 pro are the actual base model iPhones that follow the first generation to the XS.
1:09 the iPhone 3G is literally Just the original iPhone with 3G and a plastic housing. It should be the same generation and should be supported to 4.2.1 both
You know, that’s the first time I’ve heard that argument. It’s not a bad one. If going solely off designs, the first three iPhones are all essentially one generation. (The 3G did also add GPS, but I wouldn’t say that’s a huge differentiator)
@@nickbradley yeah, and the hardware, design and marketing generations are all off at some point, I know 😅 I came from a programming standpoint, for me hardware identifiers gave us the most accurate generational categorization. Everything else is just a revamp for better sales or resales of already existing hardware manufacturing
I am genuinely surprised by how many people misremember the name of the 1st generation as "iPhone 2G". Sure it was an iPhone with 2G connectivity, but it was never called the iPhone 2G! And besides which, why would Apple call their first iPhone anything other than just that - iPhone?
“Today, we’re going to reinvent the phone…and we’re calling it…iPhone 2G.”
- Steve Jobs
Looks like I'm not getting the iphone 17 in 2026 when I'm 16 I'm getting the iphone 19.
0:54 like the Nintendo DS and the 3DS(cuz it had 3d)
hey, thats me! :) 4:46
Thanks for the comments! Maybe this one will make a future video 🤔 (Probably not lol)
The iPhone 9 was skipped to celebrate apples 10 year anniversary with the iPhone X
Good point. The iPhone X name does at least have some meaning to it. The iPhone 4 is the only one properly named after its generation, and the iPhone X is the only one properly named after its anniversary. 😅
BBL DRIZZY, BBL DRIZZEEEEEEY
The iPhone 10 would’ve been iPhone 9
It depends on how you do the counting. According to rumors, they thought the 8 would be the 7S, and then X would be the 8. Technically they could have done 8 and 9. The official reason for the X name was to recognize the 10th anniversary. Although, I read somewhere they wanted that phone out 1 year earlier to recognize the 10th generation.
Long story short (like my ultimate point) the numbers in the iPhone names don't mean anything. It's all just marketing.
Nah Seven ate nine
This is true
Why are most of you guys with EPIC editing, just so unpopular?
Haha, I would use the word "undiscovered." I've only just begun on TH-cam, so it'll take time.
they probably just made the x in 2017 because of the og iphone in 2007????
Apple names names generations by models. Like the. 6s and 6? Call them the iphone 6 models, means that the
S arent gens their just models of the previous phone but when did android make 23 normal phones? Yeah i dont know if you count all their products- In general before iphone 10 the iphone naming system is very confusing in all all products or atleast most naming schemes are just sooo confusing
Been saying this for a long time
iPhone 14 should’ve beeen could iPhone 13s
well here's a short answer to the iphone 9 being missing: 7 ate 9.
I think the iPhone 9 would be the x because the xs is basically the same but it has better performance
iPhone 9 is the iPhone XR.
I think the iPhone 9 it’s gone because 789
Microsoft did the same thing for its computers
For iPhones I generally just use the iOS version that every iPhone came with when it first came out. The iPhone 4 (4th gen iPhone) came out with iOS 4 (which means it is the *actual* iPhone 4), which means the iPhone 4S =iPhone 5, therefore:
iPhone 5 = Real iPhone 6
iPhone 5S/5C = Real iPhone 7/7C
iPhone 6/6+ = Real iPhone 8/8+
iPhone 6S/6S+ = Real iPhone 9/9+
iPhone 7/7+ = Real iPhone X/X+
iPhone 8/8+/X = Real iPhone 11 (They only used the "X" branding since it came out in 2017, 10 years after the OG iPhone)
iPhone XR/XS/XS Max = Real iPhone 12R/12/12 Max
iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max = Real iPhone 13/13 Pro/13 Pro Max
iPhone 12/12 Pro/12 Pro Max/12 Mini = Real iPhone 14/14 Pro/14 Pro Max/14 Mini
iPhone 13/13 Pro/13 Pro Max/13 Mini = Real iPhone 15/15 Pro/15 Pro Max/15 Mini
iPhone 14/14 Pro/14 Pro Max/14 Plus = Real iPhone 16/16 Pro/16 Pro Max/16 Plus
iPhone 15/15 Pro/15 Pro Max/15 Plus = Real iPhone 17/17 Plus/17 Pro Max/17 Plus
This also applies to the SE phones, since they're a part of the existing generation/iOS when they're released. So the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all part of the 15th generation.
I need one bro
Can you make the iPhone?
well it's more than 17 iphones technically..
IPhone 2G, IPhone 3G, IPhone 3GS, IPhone 4, IPhone 4S, IPhone 5, IPhone 5S, IPhone 5C, IPhone 6, IPhone 6+, IPhone 6S, IPhone 6S+, IPhone SE (1st generation), IPhone 7, IPhone 7+, IPhone 8, IPhone 8+, IPhone X, IPhone XS, IPhone XS Max, IPhone XR, IPhone 11, IPhone SE (2nd generation), IPhone 12, IPhone 13, IPhone SE(3rd generation), IPhone 14, IPhone 15, in total 28 generations of IPhones (not including variations of IPhones like the 15 Pro Max, only variations are the ones released in a different date which technically makes it a different IPhone, this doesnt include the 5C as it is a whole different model than the 5)
You are correct there are more than 17 models of iPhone, but there is only 17 generations. For example, the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max are 4 different models, all within the same generation.
7 ate it
In my eyes iPhone X is iPhone 9 and iPhone XS is actually the 10
Hmm, interesting way to look at it!
12-15 is just the same generation for me
I think the 15 is different enough that it counts as a separate generation. But 12-14 realllyyyyy are very similar.
13 was major. 14 got 2gb extra RAM, bugger main lens and acrion mode which makes it perfect for 13S
Apple should do it like Samsung, naming their phones after the year they are launched. Just iPhone (2024).
They all make sense. You just don't see it right. The S and C models are different variants, not new generations.
(9 is not there because of a decade thing, ok?)
Why have they given up on the S naming scheme though? Why is the 5 and 5S one generation, but the 12, 13, and 14 are 3 generations?
WAIT. People still watch Unbox Therapy?
Haha I don’t often, but I was binging a bunch of iPhone 15 videos leading up to the launch
Ipgone13 ❤the new higher resolution screen
That is I upgraded from a Xr to a 13 🎉
iPhone X is iPhone 9 iPhone XS is iPhone 10
What could have been! Still wouldn't explain why the 7 and 8 didn't get S phones, or why they stopped doing S phones altogether.
Because 7 8 9 HAHA
I call x iphone 9 and xr or xs 10s or 10r
My final take on this is that apple used to be able to have a big release every 2 years. However they could do the big release one year after the first gen because there was so much that they could improve. I think saying generation is also flawed. Something like this isn't binary, its fluid. I will just use "generation" below to simplify things
iPhone - Gen 1
iPhone 3G - Gen 2
iPhone 3Gs - Gen 2.5
iPhone 4 - Gen 3
iPhone 4s - Gen 3.5
iPhone 5 - Gen 4
iPhone 5s - Gen 4.5
iPhone 6 - Gen 5
iPhone 6s & SE 1st Gen - Gen 5.5
2016 - Apple switches from a 2 year major update cycle to a 3 year major update cycle
iPhone 7 - Gen 5.5+
iPhone X - Gen 6
iPhone Xs - Gen 6.5
Apple rebrands "R/C" lineup of phones to become the base model. Future models will be referenced as the Pro as such.
Apple now abandons special naming styles (s, r, c), and every new release has a new number for simplicity.
iPhone 11 Pro & SE 2nd Gen - Gen 6.5+
iPhone 12 Pro - Gen 7
iPhone 13 Pro - Gen 7.5
Apple switches back to a major update every 2 years for the new Dynamic Island
iPhone 14 Pro & SE 3rd Gen - Gen 8
iPhone 15 Pro - Gen 8.5
It's really complicated and makes absolutely no sense, is the conclusion I have. However I have gotten a reverse result, we should be on iPhone 8s right now because Apple went from a big update every 2 years to every 3 years and it looks like they might be going back to a big update every 2 years again.
I really appreciate the comments! I totally agree with just about everything you're saying. Those generations would make sense if 'design change' was the rule. Which I think an argument can be made for. But if you look at most of their products, for example the iPod Touch line, the name never changed. The only difference is on the back of the box and all their support articles they would add ("X" Generation) after iPod Touch. So if Apple did that with all their iPhones, by the time they start coming out with different variants, it would get confusing again. The iPhone 5S would likely be called "iPhone (7th Generation)" and the iPhone 5C something like "iPhone Color (1st generation)". The iPhone Xs would be "iPhone (12th Generation)" and the XR would be "iPhone Color (2nd Generation)". Haha who knows, it's fun to speculate.
7 ate 9
I phone 6 SS Sounds very german
Ok, iPhone 6 and iPhone 7, they don't have the same design, similar but not the same...
iPhone 6s is closer to the iPhone 7 than iPhone 6
You'll cry if you try to make a video on *SONY* product names
Haha very true 😅
I would call the iPhone XR the iPhone 9
I mean, they probably could have. But I think after a year of “iPhone X,” coming out with a brand new phone called “iPhone 9” didn’t make sense. XR and XS was more consistent from a marketing perspective. And then the following year we get 11 and 11 Pro, and now here we are today. I think Apple is eventually going to have to drop the number scheme all together. Not sure when that’ll happen though.
@@nickbradley yea, you are probably right
imo the iphone x is the 9 and the xr is tbe real 10
You could have just proved your point by just telling that we are on the 17 generation of IOS 🤷🏾♂️
😅 that wouldn’t have satisfied most people, but technically you’re right
Cus 7 ate 9
No is am,16 yes
i like my iphone 13 ! ♥
the iphone 7 did not at all use the same design as the 6 or 6s!
The only design difference was a stronger/lighter aluminum material, different color finishes, a haptic touch home button, and the removal of the headphone jack. The 7 Plus of course received a second camera too. But aside from that, the physical dimensions are identical.
@@nickbradley „only“ *proceeds to tell you 4 differences*
@@DyingReindeer but these aren’t really “design” differences. Cases for the iPhone 6S fit on the iPhone 7.
@@nickbradley maybe they do, but have you ever looked at an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 7 next to another ? You can’t tell me that they share the same „design“
@@DyingReindeer agree to disagree. 🤷🏻♂️ If the 7 came immediately after the 6, it could have easily been called “6S.”
Iphone 10 called iphone 8?
According to the rumors before it was announced, yes. We had just gone from the 6 to the 6S and then the 7. So we knew a phone very similar to the 7 was coming out, and the rumor mill assumed it would be called the 7S. But we also knew a brand new all-screen iPhone would be coming out at the same time, which the rumor mill referred to as the iPhone 8. But as we now know, Apple instead chose iPhone 8 (not 7S) and iPhone X (not 8).
The X was meant to recognize the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. So I don't have a huge issue with this name. Although, I have heard rumors they wanted to release the iPhone X one year earlier to recognize the 10th generation.
Ok thanks @@nickbradley

They explained why there isn’t a 9 so this whole video is pointless
This video goes beyond the 9 (I also address why there’s no iPhone 2 or iPhone 3) and is more about how the numbers don’t stand for years or generations (which most people assume it does).
Also, what was their explanation for why there’s no 9?
That does not mean this video is pointless
The SE originally meant for Special Edition. SE was meant to be older design with newer chip. Based on the Watch SE and rumors of the SE 4 I say SE should stand for Simplified Edition.
😂 fair point
