Here in the states, a lot of high schoolers had them, yes. But one of the goals of this phone was to expand their market share in the growing global markets, which it did not do.
The 3g was released two years after the original now they're released every year
The original was released in June 2007, and the 3G was released July 2008. The longest gap between phones was the 4 (June 2010) and 4S (October 2011).

Haha, I actually don't have a huge issue with this, because the number always stood for something. 1-10 it stood for the current generation. And then for the 11th generation, they changed it to the year the phone was being released instead (2020).
The blue 5C was my first new iPhone. It definitely didn't need to exist, but it was cool for what it was, especially as a high schooler that didn't care about the material.

The X was the 10th year since the release of the iPhone. Everything since then has been to do with the years since the first iPhone, not the generation.
The iPhone XS messes up that theory.

I liked my 5C 😢 it was cheap and perfect back then
Even the "worst" iPhone was still an iPhone, aka a great phone. 0:49 Also, this video moreso makes the case that the 5C was the worst iPhone from Apple's perspective. From users perspectives, I think the iPhone 6 was the worst iPhone. But I doubt Apple feels the same way since it was the all-time best selling smartphone (from any company) of all time.
For iPhones I generally just use the iOS version that every iPhone came with when it first came out. The iPhone 4 (4th gen iPhone) came out with iOS 4 (which means it is the *actual* iPhone 4), which means the iPhone 4S =iPhone 5, therefore: iPhone 5 = Real iPhone 6 iPhone 5S/5C = Real iPhone 7/7C iPhone 6/6+ = Real iPhone 8/8+ iPhone 6S/6S+ = Real iPhone 9/9+ iPhone 7/7+ = Real iPhone X/X+ iPhone 8/8+/X = Real iPhone 11 (They only used the "X" branding since it came out in 2017, 10 years after the OG iPhone) iPhone XR/XS/XS Max = Real iPhone 12R/12/12 Max iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max = Real iPhone 13/13 Pro/13 Pro Max iPhone 12/12 Pro/12 Pro Max/12 Mini = Real iPhone 14/14 Pro/14 Pro Max/14 Mini iPhone 13/13 Pro/13 Pro Max/13 Mini = Real iPhone 15/15 Pro/15 Pro Max/15 Mini iPhone 14/14 Pro/14 Pro Max/14 Plus = Real iPhone 16/16 Pro/16 Pro Max/16 Plus iPhone 15/15 Pro/15 Pro Max/15 Plus = Real iPhone 17/17 Plus/17 Pro Max/17 Plus
This also applies to the SE phones, since they're a part of the existing generation/iOS when they're released. So the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, and 2022 SE are all part of the 15th generation.
