Apple is what doomed the 5c. Still one of my favorite phones ever. Apple completely gimped it by refusing to give it quality specs. I still have my green 5c laying around somewhere
This strategy is the same one that Google is using with the A series. The iPhone 5C is the iPhone that everyone wanted, a cheap iPhone. But they complained so much that Apple decided to make its phones more premium in build following the X.
A few years ago I decided to get an iPhone. Plastic is the correct material for cell phones. Phones get dropped. Glass shatters, metal gets dented, plastic survives. I really wanted a 5C, but they were just too antiquated at the point. Ended up with an SE (2016) since it was the same size and still receiving updates at the time. The SE was super ugly, though. I got the pink one and the white bezels around the screen drove me nuts to the point that I swapped a black screen onto it (just like the pink 5C had). It looked pretty sharp after that, but not nearly as good as the vibrant 5C options.
I had the 3G, 4S, 5 and 5C. I thought it would be nice to have some colour on an iPhone for a change. The only issue was that because it was essentially a 5, it felt like I just bought the same phone as i had. Plus the plastic scratched very easily and the blue was lighter than I would have liked. At the time Samsung, Sony and others were coming out with way better specced phones and so the iPhone really seemed stagnant. So after a year I sold the 5c and got an Xperia Z2. Fantastic phone and it was way ahead of iPhone in every way. The XR was definitely the C done right but it was too bulky and underspecced compared to my S7 Edge at the time, so I never went for it. Now however is the right time to get back to iPhone because they've finally caught up and surpassed android in some ways. Their hardware is finally on par too
Reminds me of the days when I would like forward to the next IPhone launch and upgrade often. These days there are so few differences between the generations I now keep my current phone for as long as possible.
I LOVED my 5C. I debated over getting a 5S and a 5C. I went with the C because it was cheaper. I got the white one because I didn't like the pastels of the colors. But I loved it. I still have it. However the battery is completely dead. It was dying for a while before I finally got a 7. The plastic shell was great. Looking back, I can't believe we used phones that small. I was on Virgin though so my options were limited to what they had. I'm pretty sure they still sold old stock 5s but I still went with the C because of the color. Also I couldn't wait to get a SE because I was coming from a 4S which had 3G that didn't work at all on the Virgin/Sprint network so I was always constantly on 1x or WiFi. So getting my 5C was a breath of fresh air. It was also durable as hell. Dropped it few times and it still doesn't have a scratch. Conversely I dropped my 7 many times and never broke it. But I dropped my 15 Pro once and the screen is shattered. Go figure.
In my opinion, the iPhone 5C was one of my favorite phones because of the bright colors and being able to experience iPhone. I didn’t mind material changes
I had the 5C and it was the worst iPhone I ever owned. I actually switched to Samsung for 3 years after owning one. The plastic backing used to pop off the device, leaving the internals exposed. I had that one replaced. The second I had, I dropped it from about a foot off the ground, and half the touch screen became unresponsive. Got that one replaced too. Third I had worked for about 6 months. Then one day as I was sending a text message, the screen slowly faded to black and then never worked again. Worst iPhone ever.
5c was not really a failure. 5c pricing strategy made 5s more successful. Prices are relative. If you put one phone with inferior features (5c) at only $100 less than its superior counterpart, people would find the superior phone (5s) a better deal (meaning it’s cheaper) in relative terms.
I also won’t be getting it this go around. I think they’ve done some really great and unique things with it though. Im curious to see how they make it more affordable, and how the form factor evolves. Right now it’s extremely large and heavy, very expensive, and OS/app development is still rather primitive. I’ve got a lot of thoughts on it actually - would likely make a good video in the future. Another wasted month. I appreciate the patience.
@@nickbradleyI feel like they made it because they CAN not really for innovation. I get that there is new, bigger advancements but it doesn’t feel special at a $4000 price tag, for being able to see your eyes through the headset? Like ooo, you can see me blink and wiggle my eyebrows. And for what I have seen, there isn’t a battery inside the headset, it’s something in your pocket. I don’t know much about the AVP, but it seems more for companies, and I believe it’s supposed to be (I don’t research), but I think it’s overall better to save your 4K, buy other things to have a better experience. Just imagine dropping. This when putting it in a charging dock. I mean, it just came out so we’re gonna have to wait for other apps. I wonder if Apple is gonna take it lightly to mods/jailbreaks and other 3rd party applications.
At the time Apple was actually feeling the pressure of Android.. Windows Phone and BlackBerry with their relatively giant screen.. so before the RnD of the bigger size iPhone was complete (hence iPad).. they had to do the other option.. which was making a cheaper iPhone..
I actually loved the iPhone 5C. It was my favourite phone I ever owned. If apple made another plastic phone that was more affordable I would buy it in a heartbeat.
The 5C was just fine. Viewing it as the worst iPhone ever or a failure is correctively recalling the past. It wasn't a failure. It was a breath of fresh air, a colourful fun iPhone rather then the usual sterile, boring offerings. Plus, I think plastic is genuinely a better material for a phone than aluminium and glass. There's a reason those old Nokias were so tough.
i had the 5s in middle school however a lot of my friends had the 5c and truthfully (at the time) i was slightly jealous because they had the cool phone colors, and i didnt really know there was that much of a hardware difference nor did i care about the physical "premium" feel.
my first phone was the black iphone 4 16gb and that was the best phone i ever had. i got on christmas 2014 and i was 5 years 9 months and 15 days old at that time. and i cant believe next year i will be 15 years old. time flies fast
5C failed at a few hurdles, but one was most definitely the 'C stands for Cheap' feeling that I got from all aspects of it. Nobody wants the cheapest option manufacturers make, unless that's all you can afford. Rocking one of those basically immediately outed you as 'too poor to own a real iPhone'. Of course, it did have its uses as a backup or teen phone, but for most regular iPhone buyers, it just wasn't appealing.
Honestly I had one and really liked it. It was a fun color, less expensive, took good pictures, played fun games (Flappy Bird, Temple Run, GTA 3 for iPhone, and Modern Combat series). Jr/SR. year of high school and a fun time in life! Not to mention, the IOS operating system was unique and cool for Apple users at the time (to me in High School)
"And none feel cheap" well thats just for the outside. I always lose my mind when i have a non pro iphone in my hand and it still uses a freaking 60hz display instead of a 120hz one like every $300 budget android phone. I guess alot of people would really like to get a display upgrade even if that means that the plastic 5c outside is coming back.
My first iPhone was 5c 32gb white, i loved that device so much. It captured most amazing photos sound quality was amazing and the feel of the device was cool. I miss those days.
From a manufacturing perspective, overall finish of the 5C is spectacular as a plastic molded object. A high-gloss finish injection molded part that has such a smooth surface. You can’t really see any surface inconsistency when viewing reflection against a light source. No stress marks, weld marks, shrink marks. Only Apple would be this obsessed about level of quality like this.
I was in school when the 5c was out and every had one. It so many people into the apple ecosystem at an early age that have never owned a known apple phone again.
The 5C 8GB was the reason I lost my interest in iPhone for 10 years. The plastic itself was pretty cool though. Just the amount of memory and the fact it stopped working after a year since purchased made me turn away from their products.
I had a 32GB iPhone 5C in green as my first smartphone, loved the thing to death having come from an iPod Touch. It stood out and was extremely durable, dropped the thing so many times and it still looked great, which is probably one of the best things about having a plastic build. The battery life on it was horrendous though, especially after 2 years, so the 6S I had later was a pretty big upgrade even if it wasn’t as unique in appearance.
Omg i remember how we thought „maan this is expensive“ at 200 bucks .. and look at prices now .. we would have never spend 1000 dollars on a smartphone back then ..
The blue 5C was my first new iPhone. It definitely didn't need to exist, but it was cool for what it was, especially as a high schooler that didn't care about the material.
Everyone always complains the new iPhones look the same or have minor differences, but I think Apple is slowly changing and shaping out what’s gonna be the new iPhone over time…
It's worth keeping in mind from my understanding (and their sales chart shows it) that the 5C was an iphone 5 with a different housing and slightly bigger battery, better front facing camera and most importantly fixed the wonky power switch that the 5 had. That paired with the black iphone 5s black aluminum coating being incredibly prone to scratching and marring (this was replaced by space gray in the 5S and subsequent models) even by your own chart of OS updates if you factor it being an iphone 5 released a year later it still meets the support standard. I think spending so much time in the keynote talking about the 5C even though it was a tiny upgrade to the 5 was really the problem of it all. Apple couldn't just admit they did that in a plastic shell so they tried to make it it's own product. I think thats why we haven't really seen it since as well because the iphone SE recycled the 5S design (which was also the 5s design)
I had the 5c. It was a great way to get a good smartphone and be in the ecosystem without needing the most expensive thing. Most people really don’t need every feature.
5C was and still is one of my favorites. It was a throwback to phones that you didn’t have to worry about throwing around and keeping wrapped in bubble wrap. iPhone 4 is #1, 5 is #2, 5C #3
I had a 5c and it was fine. My biggest issue was the 8g storage. It lasted years. I had it for two and then gave it to a friend who used it for a few more years.
The 5C was a fine phone. So many people were complaining about needing a lower price, full featured iPhone. People. Also said that plastic was great, even better than metal and glass. So, Apple made one. Yeah, it didn’t do well. They did sell over 3 million. I’m not sure how many more. But it was CALLED a failure. That’s likely a major reason why people didn’t buy it
It's ironic because I haven't owned an iPhone since the 5C and not only was it slow, lacked firmware support, but the sticking point for me, the device's battery wouldn't last a full day, without turning on the Battery Saver, I have been an Android guy ever since.
I had one and it lasted 7 years. It had the same hardware as the previous year top iPhone. It was made in plastic, lightweight, the right size and didn't scratch like the aluminum ones. Loved it till it's last day. The opposite of the 15 pro max I currently own. This thing is heavy, bulky and iOS has not really changed since version 7. Going back to android on my next phone.
I was in high school at the time and the 5C was everywhere. People loved the 5C’s colors and I’m sure their parents loved that it was only $100. By the end of the school year, there were a decent amount of them people had. But I got a 5S because I knew better and wanted the better phone. And got one for free from 9to5Mac in a contest, lol.
I never owned a 5C but I didn’t think it was a colossal failure either. I remember having a 5S which was my second iPhone I had (first one was an old 4 my dad gave me that was on its last legs) and I remember how much of an upgrade I had at that time. I haven’t owned any other smartphones outside of an iPhone and after the 5S I’ve had a 6 and have now owned an 8 Plus for the past 4 years.
I had the iPhone 5C from the 3GS and then after that, I didn't have another iPhone. The headphone jack on mine failed and neither my carrier or Apple wanted to know and that is when I first swapped to Bluetooth headphones. That aside, I found the iPhone 5C an enjoyable phone and the camera was really good for the time. However, after this phone, I moved over to Android which started off as a really bad experience and didn't get good until I got the Pixel 6a and now Pixel 8 Pro. When I upgrade again next year, I will go back to iPhone.
This was my first IPhone, I didn’t have the worst experience at the time since I was only 11-13 (I’m 20 currently) when I had mine but I felt like I was forced to upgrade because it didn’t support IOS 11
The 5C did make shockwaves in the commercial fleet market for apple however, it helped to junpstart apple into the b2b market. This is likely why immediately after the 5, fleet usage was much more common.
The iPhone 5C in hindsight was at the very least a tested product compared to the dumpster fire that was the 6 and 6S. In general the years 2013-2015 had some of the poorest engineered smartphones ever, I wouldn't go back except for the price range and that unproven technology (foldable displays) wasn't being sold at ruinous expenses.
The 5C was cool and cheap. Also IOS 7 was a MAJOR update. I remember people talking about that update from 2 years before. And phones were jailbroken to look like IOS7 before it came out .
5c was my first iPhone purchased 2nd hand. Being a college student I couldn’t afford a new phone. As a 90-00’s kid. The color and plastic what my thing. After that I stayed with apple.
The first legitimate iPhone I ever owned is the iPhone 5C. I carried it along with my iPod Touch 5th Generation since my iPhone alone has had very low storage to even properly install a lot of apps. My iPod Touch had more, in which is the main form of entertainment while my iPhone 5C worked as just a phone. Nowadays, I just have an iPhone 12 Pro Max with a large storage space. Just keeping it streamlined.
I used a 5c for a while. I just moved to Japan in 2014 and the carrier didn‘t just want to let me have a contract without a phone, but as I didn‘t have a credit history yet required an upfront payment. I was accustomed to iOS (had 2G,4s and 5s prior) the cheapest option was the 5c. After a year I was able to buy a phone via my contract on a monthly installment (took the 6plus), But it almost fet like my 5s in a different body
iPhone 5c was my first iPhone. Fast forwarding to now, I believe i’ve spent >$30000 on devices and gadgets from Apple. And I only upgraded my phone/tablet/watch/laptop/desktop every 2-4 years. I can hardly call that a failure for Apple.
5cs were popular with kids, i remmeber most my friends in middle school and highschool were using the 5C , I didn’t/don’t see anything wrong with this design as it was the perfect way to get kids into smartphones back then lol (considering in 2013, 99% weren’t exclusively Americans using an iPhone yet)
Each time apple releases a new iPhone, there's a rapid change in second hand iPhone prices. Why pay full price for a 1 year old iPhone model when there are plenty of second hand phones in the market.
i had a iPhone5 and also the 4(2x) and a iPhone 3G , what I want to say is when I get the iPhone 5 and I was using it my phone getting some weird problem where the iPhone start to switch randomly the color when you start the phone . first time before this with the color happens he goes like on reset randomly and I had to connect it with my computer and go over iTunes I think where I had to download my stuff again but then one time he start to get complete red when the logo came after starting the phone and since that it stayed there and just changed the color like the top in the display was blue and the bottom green ( I think I have a video on my Facebook because I asked what I can do ) and that also happens to my 2x iPhone4 and since that I switched to Samsung until the iPhone 11pro because I was allways thinking that this problem will come again. sure the phones was making good picture back in time but I was so sad losing like 3 phones
The biggest fail from a consumer point of way was the 8gb version. I had the iPhone 5c as my first iPhone, I loved the blue colour however the only problem I had with it was it very small storage capacity. Because first time users didn’t note the 8gb storage is not usable. So I returned it but I loved the phone. I eventually moved back to the iPhone with 13 pro max when the storage is now feasible, reasonable or comparable with Android phones.
Yooo new vid. Forgot to check your channel. Like it 👍 -Loved the vid & shorts, do you think you’ll get into other tech stuff? Like controllers, consoles, etc? Or focus on something other than Apple. I love your style tho.

Out of all the phones I’ve owned I started off with 3 basic phones from Verizon and then once I switched to Straight Talk I’ve had an iPhone ever since. The basic phones I’ve had were an LG VX5400 (flip phone), LG Venus (my first touch screen phone), and a Pantech Hotshot which was basically smartphone-like in terms of an all touch screen but just wasn’t an actual smartphone. With the iPhone I’ve had the 4, 5S, 6, and been on the 8 Plus for the past 4 years but planning on getting a 15. Ever since December 2022 I’ve owned a 7th generation iPad and since May 2023 I’ve owned a 6th generation iPod.
5c was great, actually reviving mine to have a smaller mobile leaving my 14pro behind. Love the plastic, most people pay for an expensive piece of plastic as protection😅
If they’d waited a generation, and made this to replace the 5s I would’ve jumped on it in the day. The 32bit cpu from the iPhone 5 and the push to 64bit on iOS was just not worth it
My friends owned 5Cs and it looked very cool. It was a direct answer to Nokia Lumia series and it was a nice product but I think the price gap wasn’t big enough so reviewers didn’t liked it that much.
Honestly… my 5c was way more resilient than the 5s I had a year later. Dropped it so many times without a case and the screen never cracked. Had the 5s for a week, dropped it with a case on and the screen shattered.

Iphone 5c was best iphone ever. It was colorful, small and light. I love it, but 32 gigas memory was to less for me.
Nah that iPhone SE 1st generation was clean 🔥🔥Also was my first iPhone followed by the 7 and now my current iPhone 11
I loved my 5c in school. Had the blue one! The plastic did get beat up pretty bad though.
Yo nick, vision Apple pro or whatever is coming out. I’m obviously not getting it but, what do you think about it?
@@britishduck major failure
At the time Apple was actually feeling the pressure of Android.. Windows Phone and BlackBerry with their relatively giant screen.. so before the RnD of the bigger size iPhone was complete (hence iPad).. they had to do the other option.. which was making a cheaper iPhone..
Watching this on my yellow 5c. Bought it brand new and it is still going strong.
That's amazing! I loved the yellow color
There's a reason those old Nokias were so tough.
your voice is so relaxing and calm and it gives a voice artist vibes
+ i remember a joke saying that the XR looks like an iphone 9c lol
i had the 5s in middle school however a lot of my friends had the 5c and truthfully (at the time) i was slightly jealous because they had the cool phone colors, and i didnt really know there was that much of a hardware difference nor did i care about the physical "premium" feel.
"changed their product strategy forever"
iPhone 11 and later: are you sure about that?
The phone was $99 ??💀 these days they selling phone covers for that price
It was that plus 24 months of payments my iphone 14 pro max was 140$ and about 3$ with a trade in
@@draggy6544 yea i figured it was like a financial plan and not the actual price
sad that iphones arent free anymore
my first phone was the black iphone 4 16gb and that was the best phone i ever had. i got on christmas 2014 and i was 5 years 9 months and 15 days old at that time. and i cant believe next year i will be 15 years old. time flies fast
Those were the days!
goodluck with life bruv, stay resilient@@ZEREXIA
@@nickbradleyI can5 imagine a free phone
Even at $199, compared to the $799 today, the newest phones were still insanely cheap
My first iPhone was a 5C. Ever since then i use only iPhones, got iPads, got iMac and MacBooks. Not a failed product at all.
@@Max-9871 you know, that’s a fair point
My first iPhone was 5c 32gb white, i loved that device so much. It captured most amazing photos sound quality was amazing and the feel of the device was cool. I miss those days.
I forgot about the original SE.
Seeing that they still sell the current SE (in the iPhone 8 body)
I prefer the look of the original SE.
This is true. It actually has me interested in the rumors about the 5C-like design for an upcoming Apple Watch SE 😅
The 5C was also the most durable iPhone
I didn’t know that? Does the iPhone SE series have the same problem?
Honestly, the current iPhone models remind me of the 5S, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it was one of the most beautiful models ever.
Yes it was. 💯
I still have a working 5c in the closet that I use as a spare phone when the newer one breaks and during that time I have already broken 4 phones
a glass iPhone would never have lasted this long and the plastic has a surprisingly high-quality feel
Omg i remember how we thought „maan this is expensive“ at 200 bucks .. and look at prices now .. we would have never spend 1000 dollars on a smartphone back then ..
I had a white/silver iPhone 5 when it came out and I actually loved the white 5C.
It was truly white and the curved plastic felt great in hand.
The blue 5C was my first new iPhone. It definitely didn't need to exist, but it was cool for what it was, especially as a high schooler that didn't care about the material.
I remember back when the iPhones had super tiny screens, everyone had the super thick otter box cases, and iPhones still had like no storage back then
Everyone always complains the new iPhones look the same or have minor differences, but I think Apple is slowly changing and shaping out what’s gonna be the new iPhone over time…
It's worth keeping in mind from my understanding (and their sales chart shows it) that the 5C was an iphone 5 with a different housing and slightly bigger battery, better front facing camera and most importantly fixed the wonky power switch that the 5 had.
Really good to see how this worked in the long view. One thing was that the A7 processor was way faster than the A6 was.
I had the 5c. It was a great way to get a good smartphone and be in the ecosystem without needing the most expensive thing. Most people really don’t need every feature.
The 5c in green is still kicking in my room here somewhere. My 16 pro max in comparison is insane
5C was and still is one of my favorites. It was a throwback to phones that you didn’t have to worry about throwing around and keeping wrapped in bubble wrap. iPhone 4 is #1, 5 is #2, 5C #3
Back in 2013, I dressed up as an iPhone 5C for Halloween. 😅
I’m glad this guy is getting called out, the iphone 5c was an amazing starter phone and a lot of people i know had one
I tried to address this 0:44 but it wasn't enough 😅
I had a 5c and it was fine. My biggest issue was the 8g storage. It lasted years. I had it for two and then gave it to a friend who used it for a few more years.
The 5C was a fine phone. So many people were complaining about needing a lower price, full featured iPhone. People. Also said that plastic was great, even better than metal and glass. So, Apple made one. Yeah, it didn’t do well. They did sell over 3 million. I’m not sure how many more. But it was CALLED a failure. That’s likely a major reason why people didn’t buy it
Johnny Ive knocked it so far out of the park with iOS 7 that iOS still looks almost exactly like it going onto iOS 18 today.
Apple: We want our customers to buy our most expensive iphone.
Also Apple: We are disappointed that nobody is buying our cheap iphone.
I had a 5c and I loved it. I couldn’t afford an iPhone up to that point. It allowed me to get into the eco system which I haven’t left since.
The one phone I had a lot of issues with. The internal clock battery died and I took it in to Apple and told me we cant figure it out
I hate wearing cases on my iPhones, and 5C was the king of caseless, you cant see marks and dents on its surface, I wasn’t afraid to drop it
I had the iPhone 5C from the 3GS and then after that, I didn't have another iPhone.
That's a decent point
After that I stayed with apple.
wish apple changed the style every 2 years like they did before where they would do say iphone 15 then 15s then change the style agen
I was accustomed to iOS (had 2G,4s and 5s prior)
the cheapest option was the 5c.
After a year I was able to buy a phone via my contract on a monthly installment (took the 6plus),
But it almost fet like my 5s in a different body
I actually liked my iPhone 5c but that wasn't the reason why I switched to Android later.
iPhone 5c was my first iPhone.
Like it 👍
-Loved the vid & shorts, do you think you’ll get into other tech stuff? Like controllers, consoles, etc? Or focus on something other than Apple. I love your style tho.
Yes - although, I’m not sure when. It’s going to be pretty Apple centric for a while since that’s what I know lol
I’ve had iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4G, 4GS, 5S, 6, 6S+, XR, 15 Pro Max
iPad 2, iPad Air 1st gen, iPad 6th gen and then iPad 10th gen
Apple Watch series 2 and Apple Watch Series 3
AirPods 1st gen, 2nd gen and third gen. Although I’m now smart enough to get better and cheaper earbuds lol
Yeah honestly the 5c was one of my favs. Quality was decent for the price and loves the colors. Loved the plastic feel too ngl
I really liked the 5C and the plastic shell as it felt so good in the hand I thought it was brilliant.
Honestly… my 5c was way more resilient than the 5s I had a year later. Dropped it so many times without a case and the screen never cracked. Had the 5s for a week, dropped it with a case on and the screen shattered.
