I think the game makes the trombone noise just by using the slider as a pitch slider. They just need to calibrate the top and bottom pitch and they have a virtual trombone that can play any real frequency.

The only inaccurate thing about Trombone Champ is that you don't get to play melodies very often. Nothing stopping you from learning how to play Auld Lang Syne on trombone but usually you'll be playing beeps and boops on 1 and 3.

I've played trombone from 5th grade all the way until the end of high school (and i guess a little past that, but casually at home, not at gigs) it's certainly a hard instrument to master. Instead of fingering keys like a trumpet, baritone or tuba, you have to memorize slide positions exactly, otherwise your notes will fall sharp or flat. I will say that this instrument is extremely microtonal, and whilst easy to pick up, it is probably one of the most difficult instruments to master properly.

Kinda the Robert E. Howard of militaristic marching band composers.
Before this moment, I had become so jaded from playing so many marches in symphonic bands that I forgot the joy another person feels when listening to a March. They’re fun, easy to follow, safe chords

To be fair, after having played this instrument for only 2 years I still love it to this day, 5 years later and I still have mine. Sure I don't sound like this anymore but with enough practice I would. This just reminded me of how wacky this instrument really is and how funny it can sound, and reminded me why I chose it for my highschool band. I just loved its sound and plus the range of pitch on it is fantastic.

I've played trombone on and off for about ten years now, and I can confirm that I have been harassed by Tootseeker Tom in his search for the prophecy. Also, Alec managed to become a better trombone player than most of the players I knew in high school in one stream.

Of this games many achievements, one of its biggest for me is making the free use songs like Gray Mare and William Tell Overture that so many indie rhythm games have actually fun and enjoyable. I'd listen to ANY classical piece on the trombone
So you will be happy to know that there are already folks working on making custom sings for this, though at the moment it's by replacing the existing songs files. Will have to see how it pans out as folks master editing the system, but i have already seen someone do Megalovania

at 29:47 during "Stars and Stripes Forever", a gramaphone is clearly seen in the background. Gramaphones were in common use from the 1920s to the 1950s. There were 48 states in the US during this entire time period. Although we cannot see a full US flag in the background, all of the flags seen seem to have an alternating cross pattern of stars, which is the pattern that the 50 star flag uses. However, the 48 star flag uses a more regular grid pattern. This could indicate that the timeline of trombone champ is different from our current timeline, but more likely that is reading way too far into it and it was a simple mistake.
I can't wait to see people grind this game to perfection, it will be amazing to watch someone hit all the notes, especially if/when customs come into play.
