Toured several times with Phil and James Taylor. Just a list of the recording he's played bass on would fill up several books. One of the best bassists ever.
Kudos to the pair of you for playing the whole video, without interruption. This is probably one of the best music videos every made. Not only for Phil's performance, but also for the overall sound production, video editing and the enthusiasm of the crowd.
Hope you noted that both Daryl Stuemer and Chester Thomson from Genesis were part of his backing band...Phil at his brilliant best. So sad that he now suffers with severe ill health.
What a song by phil collins as a huge genesis fan i love the way Chester Thompson the (drummer) and the daryl stuermer (guitarist) have followed from the group genesis to his solo career too amazing
Such a wonderful reaction. Phil Collins is icon, a legend. I was there in Paris and the whole concert was fantastic. In the air Tonight was the start of the second half of the concert. I'm sure you will enjoy Take me Home of the same concert. This song is at the end of the concert. A concert with Phil Collins is lifetime experience.
Genesis (after Peter Gabriel) opened both concerts I went to with “Mama,” which also starts out with thundering drums and longer intro. It worked well to build a dramatic vibe. Fantastic concerts.
The buildup is so atmospheric leading you by the hand to the climax. Phil always describes this song as pulling people in gently then punching them in the face! 😂😂😂
Leland Sklar, the bassist, has worked on countless sessions and live tours, collaborating with a vast array of artists, including James Taylor, Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Toto, and Carole King.
The guy with the white beard is Leland Sklar, who is a great and famous bass player. Interesting you bring up " Risky Business". I saw that movie and do not remember the song "In Th Air Tonight" being played on the train. For me it was "Love on a Real Train" by Tangerine Dream, that caught my ear in that scene. The sad thing about being a drum player all ones' life is the vibrations really wreak your joints. I have a memory of a scene from a video of Phil Collins where he was walking around with a drum stick taped to his hand. Neil Peart was also worried that he couldn't play like he wanted, and was thinking of calling it quits, before he was diagnosed with cancer. Alex also talked about having arthritis. "Losing It" by Rush is about this idea. Enjoyed your reaction.

Hi Nick and Lex! This concert was one of the best recorded ones you'll ever come across! For another great one from Phil, which will show a different side of him, try 'Another Day In Paradise' (the music video is sooo emotional!) - love your reactions, wishing you a Happy Christmas from the UK! 🥰
It surprises me that very few people don’t notice that the drums aren’t on the rear catwalk initially! I don't think he'd have taken the chance of that happening during a gig of that size while walking around the stage. No, the sticks were waiting for him.
I remember when this first came out and you can always tell when somebody was in their car and at the light listening to it because they started air drumming., and because if you heard it enough times you can tell exactly what they were listening to just by watching them. I'm 68 and this song Still hits me the same way it did the first time I heard it
What many dont realise about Phil is he introduced the new sound of drums in 80's. It is gated reverb drum sound. Before him the drums sounded dry and hollow and would never cut through the song. During one recording session with Peter Gabriel and producer Hugh Padgham they discovered this technique by accident but Phil perfected it so well everyone was using it in 80's and later to this day. And it is this drum sound that allowed many songs today to exist and without it they would never become hits.
I'm 57 and very fortunate to have grown up throughout the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s. At one point in the 80s, Phil Collins dominated radio airplay in America. He seemingly had hit song after hit song, and his music was used as the backdrop in the hit 80s TV show, Miami Vice. If your from my era, Phil Collins is a HUGE deal... plus, I was also a Genesis fanboy. Talent runs deep in his family. His son Nic played drums for Genesis on their 2022 Farwell tour. Nic also played drums for his dad's solo shows towards the end of his career. Lastly, Phil's daughter, Lilly Collins, is a big film star with some very impressive credits to her name. A very talented family to say the least. Thanks for your great reaction!
Having, by a tragic accident of birth, been brought up elsewhere in historic Lancashire, I unfortunately didn't benefit from the miracle of having my musical appreciation being automatically heightened by my natal geography, but I think he's great anyway.

The meaning of this song is what makes me so emotional. Divorce. Phil was going through a divorce. A divorce is a loss. I love Phil Collins and thank you both for this reaction from a 64 yr. old woman.
I love Phil have grown up listening to his music. He is a legend truly heartbreaking his health is suffering. I tell you one thing there will never ever be another Phil Collins. ❤️❤️❤️
Saw Phil, 11 Nov 2005 in Glasgow, Scotland, 'First Final Farewell Tour,' Epic concert, hit after hit. Totally under rated artist. great drummer, On stage was 3 full drum kits and 2 individual snare drums that were used through out the concert. 'Take Me Home' was an unforgettable closing number.
3 Years later you can see Phil still at his best , when Genesis played in Rome , in front of 500.000 people. For free . But the end is very very sad , because of Phil's Health. My heart is broken . I saw the final Genesis Tour . It broke me.
Phenomenal live performance video of his greatest solo track...At first I was disappointed that the reaction video wouldn't be to the original studio version, but this was actually even better!
In all of the concerts I’ve seen, Phil usually end his concerts with “Take Me Home.” In his But Seriously Live tour, there was an intermission and then In the Air Tonight.
Nick & Lex, being the Genesis and Phil Collins fans you are, you must realize that the guitar player is Daryl Stuermer, and the 2nd drummer is Chester Thompson. They both played live performances (post Steve Hackett era) with Genesis, and also in all of Phil's solo works. While Genesis is a British group, both Daryl and Chester are from the U.S.
On bass the legendary Leland Sklar. You could spend more than a year on famous recordings by great artists with Leland Sklar on bass guitar. Drummer Chester Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer were a reliable addition to the Genesis live concerts from late seventies on.
Such a great performance, I love this and have it saved in my favourite videos list. I've watched this exact video several times and love it every time. I've also got a lump in my throat Lex, so good!
One of my greatest regrets of my life are concerts I had to skip b/c of work, where I should have called in sick.. I should have seen more Phil Collins tours than the one show I saw (No Jacket Required tour).

Phil organized this song for every instrument come in 1 & time all the way to the drums. People were talking about how he was on point with everything.... of course he was that's the way he planned it.
Fortunate to have seen Genesis many, many times and Phil solo approximately 6 times. Always outstanding! I've seen dozens of concerts and Genesis is w/ out question, the greatest live band I have ever seen!!
Hi Guys, there are numerous live versions of this song and all of them brilliant and emotional. I remember seeing and hearing this song when Phil appeared on the British pop programme "Top of the Pops". It was his 1st ever solo appearance and song release. I bought the single that week and shortly after the album "Face Value" There are a lot of heartbreaking tracks, throughout his solo albums, and you can feel his anger and frustration from the pain of a lost love, that he was going through at the time and brought about this album. His follow up album begins with one of the most powerful angry tracks > "I don't care anymore" that really hits you like a brick ! No punches pulled. There is another that I bought as a single but a 12" version which is 8 minutes long that just gets to you emotionally > "Take Me Home" which he does the full 8 minute version of live. Even in Genesis there are many emotional tracks that easily reduce anyone to tears. Phil's vocals definitely draw out those tears and if anyone did cover versions of such songs, it would not have the same impact. Phil is singing from personal experience, making it that much more real and boy do you feel it.....especially live ! Great to see this video, thankyou. His solo concerts are just wonderful. Byee Jim X
No, the people there did not know that Phil was going to play the drums at the end. The drum set came out of the floor at the last moment. You can hear the moment they see it. You can catch a glimpse of it on the video.
I thank God that I got the chance to watch Phil's concert here in Indonesia, 1995. It was awesome..! Now that was a once in a lifetime experience. It just sticks to your soul forever..❤
The song was also used as the Theme song for television Cop show called "Miami Vice" which starred Don Johnson back in the late eighties and early nineties.
Phil's kit for this tour was on a platform lift that rose up when needed. Apparently, during one of these shows, when Phil went up to join in on In The Air Tonight, the lift didn't work and the kit stayed lowered down in the hole. Only one thing to do (according to Phil), he jumped into the hole and played his part, totally hidden from view. He explained after the song to the audience and the lift was fixed for the rest of the show.
If you watch closely, the drum kit comes up out of the floor as he gets to it. I saw this live it was amazing. This song was about 2/3 the way through.
Although Leland Sklar is only a GREAT session bass player, his participation in more than 2000 albums makes him, in my humble opinion, worthy of the respect of the music industry and a place in the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame.
Great reaction to a great song! A bit of trivia that you’ll both get a kick out of, is that Phil’s first show as lead singer was in London, Ontario back in March of 1976! Cheers!
That gated-reverb drum was the standout part of the song and really was a definitive sound of the 80s. Look up In the Air Tonight on Wikipedia for the story of it's serendipitous discovery. Still powerful as heck gives me the chills every time.
Such an incredible live performance! Love seeing people react to this one. I cried too when I first saw this. Such a legend! Btw we ALL played air drums back in the day!✌🏻😎
This track was approx 2/3 of the way through the concert the long intro was to allow Phil to be fitted with the headset, the drum kit he played had no cymbals, and was hidden until he approached when it came up through the floor. He is one of only 3 people in the world to have sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist and over 100 million albums as a main member of a band. The others being Micheal Jackson and Sir Paul McCartney.
The guy is just a genius i don't know if he will ever be able to tour again heres hoping that he does this song as always been amasing when it😂was first released back in 1981 i remember watching this on top of the pops and it gave me goosebumps thanks for playing this ian from over in the UK
I've been lucky to see Phil several times, and that song never disappoints live. Chester Thompson is the other drummer, played with Phil and also Genesis for a number of years. As pointed out Leland Sklar is the bass player. Such a nice guy. I met him at a meet n greet many years ago when he was playing with Toto
Something in your reaction TONIGHT. Omg 😳 What a classic performance and now a classic reactors reaction. Lex’s smile and excitement broke my phone. ❤️❤️ so sad that he suffers from poor health. Great reaction Nick and Lex. Nice shirts as well. Keep them coming. I’m finally catching up a little.
Chills, indeed, young lady. I've watched this dozens of times. Never gets old. A moment of musical art stamped in history. I only noticed after watching the first several times that his drum kit was hidden and rose up as he got closer, AND there were no cymbals in the kit. Amazing. This track was in the middle of the show, after an interlude. The whole concert was epic. Be well. /M.

Thank you guys, love Phil. He is definitely a GOAT. (Greatest of all time.) You should check out Another Day in Paridise.
We actually reacted to that song already, check it out!! :)
Such an incredible live performance! Love seeing people react to this one. I cried too when I first saw this. Such a legend! Btw we ALL played air drums back in the day!✌🏻😎
Loved this so much! Thank you.
Phil Collins was my first concert. Way back in 1985! Was a great show!
He tore it up
I didn't buy many singles on vinyl but this was one of them. Oh that T-shirt of Lex's. i thought my eyes were messed up!
The guy is just a genius i don't know if he will ever be able to tour again heres hoping that he does this song as always been amasing when it😂was first released back in 1981 i remember watching this on top of the pops and it gave me goosebumps thanks for playing this ian from over in the UK
i have listened to this song 1000's of times and this is by far the best Version of the song ever...
Officially the fastest 7 minutes on record!
Omg 😳
What a classic performance and now a classic reactors reaction.
Be well. /M.
