No click track. No autotune. No sampling. No laser light displays or pyrotechnics. Just musical mastery.
Definitely autotune on the recorded version. Every vocalist has pitch correction applied in recordings
@@louquay this song was recorded well before autotune was first used.
@@louquay Sorry, my friend, but on the package it says this recording has no editing, overdubs, or audio sweetening of any kind. Even back then, that was something unique. From the packaging: "The recording contains no overdubs or re-recordings, and may include occasional stage buzzes."
@@bechtoea which show is this, brother? what package is this one you`re talking? DVD?
alchemy live, got it
My new hobby is watching people find out about Mark Knopfler for the first time!!! I can almost enjoy it the same I did, as the first time I ever heard him play!!!! Truly a one of a kind talent, and this live version is the best!!!!
Me too! I get such a thrill saying, yep he is amazing, enjoy finding all the other amazing music he/they made!
🎉❤me too and I never ever tire of watching this whole concert!! 🎉then look where Mark is now !
Also his middle years … that small concert he has singing those beautiful ballad like songs with the violins, etc! ☺️☺️👏👏 ( Golden Heart , etc)
Just a small room of people who got a chance to see and feel him up close playing wow I wish I could have been there❤
Same!
I love the looks on their faces and their demeanor when Knopfler overwhelms them. I've watched 6 so far. Blows me away!
me too XD
The Drummer was so stoked his father was seeing him for the first time. He had the rest of the band just as hyped as he is. The drummer kills it!!
Yes. You could see Knopfler smile back at him after one of his big rolls. One of the best drum performances you'll ever see live.
he totally killed it and revived it and killed it again - awesummm
John Lennon probably would have said that he wasn't even the best drummer in the band ;-)
The drummer is Terry Williams, an amazing artist. However, the original drummer on the debut album was the incomparable genius Pick Withers.
Hands down one of the best live performances ever recorded...Knopfler is a true artist, possibly the best ever.
And he makes it seem effortless! He can’t help himself
Guitar GOAT!
"possibly the best ever"
At THIS level of artistic greatness, even superlatives are....superfluous - yes?
"He can play"@@marvinc9994
There's no best ever.
Been listening to Sultans of swing for 45 years and still get goosebumps.
Me too!
Just looked at my hands, they looked liked like they were at war.
And I've heard this song for 2000th time. At least.
Me too, for long years. From the 80s
his brother in band also what does he play the drums
I was at this concert. A night I have never forgotten, almost 40 years later.
Wow!! Dire Straits have always been my favorite. I saw them live in Toronto about 30 years ago. Great concert, as always. Stevie Ray Vaughn did a set with Mark. It was fabulous! As I recall Stevie Ray Baughn was killed in an accident not too long after that. (Please correct me if I am wrong about that.)
What an awesome and memorable experience that would have been!!!
😯😯😯😯 unreal
you weren't at this concert you liar
🔥
The drummer needs a medal
amazing !
Modern music can't hold a candle to the good old days
Which, when you think on it, is kind of what "Sultans of Swing" is about: stepping into a club to listen to music from "the good old days"!
We sure were more interested in mastery of instruments and poetry. It shows.
The drummer Terry Williams dad was in the audience and was the first time he had seen him perform. Mark allowed him go all out
wow thank you so much for that info, i didnt know that
That is so cool ! thanks, man
That's fucking beautiful mate. Go on Terry! 🎉
I also liked when Mark turned around and looked at him with a grin after one of his mad fills. Terry was on a mission that night and it is brilliant to watch!
I don’t think Mark allowed him he just did it coz his Dad was there
One of the greatest live performances of all time, by anyone.
What a great band. And Knopfler is a superb song writer and guitarist. What a pleasure to listen to this.
Very much a sleeper band especially in this era
@@picklemat4619 I wouldn't say at all, I've heard Sultans Of Swing on Radio here in Estonia even, and When I played it to my 2 teenage friends they also liked it.
The best of all Time. Hard top reach this level. 👏👍🤔
The whole Dire Straits and Mark knopfler music IS so so ...
Anybody else remember the day when musicians became one with their instrument? These guys could jam til they drop .
Straight ahead rock n roll, brilliant version🎸🎶
Knopfler could play the same basic riff for 24hrs straight and make it unique and compelling each time through.
the real magic in this performance is that each and every one of the musicians are having a lot of fun and anyone can feel that
100%
The fact each one of the band are probably top 10 all time in their field too (higher for Knopfler of course, maybe top 3 all time guitarist) and nailed this performance in their primes as well...I still get goosebumps listening to this album and the cheer at the end of this track is immense.
Oh yes, that's obvious, and it makes it even more beautiful to watch...
For my money, Mark Knopfler is an absolute virtuoso guitarist whose playing is not only world leading, but also so melodic. The melodic nature of his solos makes him standout against his contemporaries. At the time that this video was made, the members of Dire Straits were on the top of their game and on top of the world. This was perfection..
I agree, for me it was Stevie and Knophler on electric. Sabicas, Mclaughlin, DeLucia, and now Billy Strings. And Wooten on bass. We've been very fortunate to have these talents in our lifetime!
The things that makes him awesome is the lack of ego. he's not like old racist arse clapton. Mark just plays and sings. it's why he's so good.
the phrasing in the final solo after the cooldown was absolutely perfect. just builds and builds until he descends into guitar heaven
He's one of those musicians who is so connected to his instrument that he only needs to think a note, and his fingers are just there, without any other input. Just think the note...fingers are already playing it. Then there are the notes he thinks of, and how he puts them together....just sublime. So much finesse
This song in particular has always reminded me of the style of Roy Clark.
The studio version won't disappoint, but will underscore how well they nailed the song on stage with additional embellishments.
I think the studio version gives the context for how brilliant this live version is. The original is much slower, smoother, and more intelligible (both lyrically and melodically). It was a brilliant song that got enormous radio airtime and created a solid platform from which the live version blasts off. At the time of the concert, the song was an established, Grammy winning hit. The band had been touring heavily for a few years on the back of their big hit single. They were an incredibly tight machine and they (and the song) were evolving beyond the original boundaries. The concert shows them shaking off the doldrums of playing a hit song night after night and launching it into outer space. Much faster, and now packed full of new ideas, the song becomes a roller-coaster for the band, and the audience, to try to ride, holding on for dear life.
The Studio Version doesn´t dissppoint
A published record often has the aim to convey the general feeling/vibe. To achieve that, you keep the musical texture lean&efficient, without too much riff raff.
Added benefit: it also promotes improvisation at live shows. Credit to Mark Knopfler, he is one of the very few who can go as crazy. He reminds me of Chris Thile.
@@smeetsnoud1I've heard about 5 or 6 versions and he doesn't really improvise much..a few minor variations is all
@@smeetsnoud1 I love the Mandela Live version with Eric Clapton joining in. Not the same energy we when they were this young but the guitar and drums are just as awesome.
I have never seen 5 guys have more fun in my life!
Terry Williams, everybody! Give it up!!
Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
you forgot Tunnel of love
Private investigator is a Sick tune
This is an album band. Listeners who gets sucked into play-list only Best-Of's cheat themselves soooo much of the fantastic album experience.
Alchemy is the Album.
Lady writer is fucking amazing!
The drums are friggin addictive on this version
When music was music. Sorry you missed those years. Breathtaking. ❤
Mark Knopfler on lead guitar is phenomenal in this performance, but the drummer absolutely ATE IT and was truly remarkable. Just amazing! I never tire of this Dire Straits classic and this live performance is the ultimate IMO.
He always reminds me of Animal on Sesame Street!
They each had a moment that night.
Keyboards/piano on Telegraph Road was extraordinary.
One of The Best string Pluckers EVER
Iron Maiden fan here...This is the best live version of a song I have ever heard...Thanks...
Never ever in history drums and guitar loved each other more intensively
This live version is soooo much better than the studio version.
ONLY if one is intimately familiar with the original is this even understandable.
aber nicht diese
@@jollyrodgers7272 The lyrics are very good too, and more understandably in the studio - certainly the live version is more exciting.
Still so love the original with that drum beat start!
How can anyone alive today not know who Mark Knopfler is?
Thought the same thing
You have to understand... the last generation or two grew up in a music wasteland. They mostly listened to rap, which is inherently crap, and what was left was cheap, poorly executed, and uninspiring. They don't know any better.
@@gaetanomaximus8650 yeah thats it probably...
That's a rhetorical question, right? I'm fairly certain that there are millions of people who have no idea who he is.
@kierstenridgway4634 You're right, though anyone seriously interested in music should have heard of the greatest 80s bands and some of 70s and 60s bands. Pretty much every adult in the western world should have heard of the Beatles, arguably one of the best 60s bands, for instance.
Terry Williams on drums
Just drives the song! I am not sure the average Rock and Roll fans appreciate just how good this band was live. This is not even my favorite song of the performance. Sooo goooood!
É talmente dentro al pezzo che sembra un alieno. Master! N. 1
These people had no idea what a treat that they were in for that evening. One of the best live shows. Ever
This is my drive to work song. Every day!
AWESOME !!

Marry me, or at least give me a lift to work 😘
He’s a local hero in Newcastle and wrote a tune called “Local Hero” that is played at every Newcastle United home game. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it….
I love that song and that film.
The movie is a cult. Live it. Plus they play the title at every Toon game
He just released a charity single of Local Hero called Guitar Heros, and it includes soooo many legendary guitarists and musicians. Jeff Beck's last recording.
Going Home....wonderful :)
Mark Knopfler wrote all the music and lyrics for Dire Straits 6 albums, and when they disbanded in 1995 he continued doing the same for his new Mark Solo band and 9 albums later, at 74 is still at it and releasing a new album in 2024. He’s a musical magician I❤MK. Love your reaction, please play Telegraph Road Alchemy Live and Brothers in Arms from Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley
Don`t forget that he also did the score to The Princess Bride.
@@Chiungalla79 ....i still have the vinyl. I bought it after watching the film.
He's not only a top guitarplayer but his songwriting skills are incredible. Very versatile, he can write a song about anything.
Thanks for your replies @Chiungalla79 & @MrSparklespring. Mark’s list of musical accomplishments & awards are as long as your arm, and as a longtime diehard MK fan I’m pretty au fait with most of them. Sometimes there’s only time to précis a comment, so yep I did miss a lot out. He did indeed write the score for The Princess Bride, but also for 8 other movies (i.e. 6 x soundtrack albums) He also made 4 collaborative albums, & has worked as a producer and sideman for a countless diverse and impressive range of other artists. You never hear MK blowing his own trumpet, but he’s a national treasure in my book I❤️MK
Satisfying is the perfect word. This is f*cking incredible! One of the best live performances EVER!
Mark Knopfler is one of the most proficient guitarists in rock. His sweeping arpeggio and chord changes are amazing. Million dollar fingers! ❤❤❤
Mark was brilliant on the guitar as always in this performance. I'd expect nothing less from one of the cleanest guitarists of all time. Terry Williams for me would definitely get an honourable mention in this song. He killed the drums in this, and IMHO made one of the greatest impacts (pun intended) on the energy of the song. Just like Alan Clark killed the keys in Telegraph Road. The entire band that night was on another level of musicianship. Live music doesn't get a lot better.
I was lucky enough to go to this concert with my dad. It was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983 as part of the Love Over Gold tour. The best concert I have ever attended. This track plus Telegraph road will make you cry with joy. It was utterly mesmerising, even better than Live Aid.
This one of the coolest things I've ever read!!! I can't imagine the energy in that place, and just envy you!!!
You lucky! Just watching it and listening to it over years is in itself overwhelming. Can't imagine for those who had the chance to attend the live!
Completely clean tone on the guitar, no effects whatsoever too. Just Mark and his considerable skills
Mark Knopfler's guitar tone is immediately recognizable. One of a handful of guitarists you can say that about.
Yep and yet so musically varied too. His use of different techniques combined with different guitars just adds to his genius. Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, Money For Nothing to take just 4 examples from his extensive musical catalogue - all masterpieces, yet all played on different guitars with variations in techniques. The man truly is a virtuoso despite being too humble to ever except that description.
Mark and Willie Nelson, two different yet awesome guys
Yep . Just like Jimi Hendrix , David Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Eddie Van Halen from Van Halen. Guitar Gods !
@jjc5407 did you ever see the video he does where he just talks about guitars and playing for like an hour, and picks up different guitars through it and plays little bits etc....sounds like it could be incredibly boring but it is just mesmerising.
@@universalfleece is that "Guitar Stories" where Dire Straits' bass player John Ilsley talks to Mark about his 6 most iconic guitars? If so then yes! It's a great documentary. The part where he drops by a pub to effortlessly jam with his old friend (and fellow Notting Hillbilly) Steve Phillips who he bought his National Style O from so many years ago is perhaps the highlight. They just make it look so effortless.
The best live performance I have ever heard …. Incredible 👍👍👍
The next contestant is 1981: Jourrney Live in Houston Tx, the Escape Tour. Different style, very intensely fantastic.
Just when you think it can't go to a higher plane it does. Their best song of many superb songs. Imagine seeing that live.
Iam 83 and didn’t listen to this band in the day. Today I love them . Iam not a rocker but this is pure talent
One of the greatest guitarists ever.
Their debut from 1978 contained the studio version only, which is an all-time classic, winning them a Grammy and the album won them Best New Artist, propelling them to stardom. It's much more laid back than the live version, and contained the amazing trademark guitar licks of the great Mark Knopfler, who is also the lead singer, that the band is known for. Well worth you checking it out. Alchemy Live was released in 1984 and to me is one the greatest live albums ever. Whatever you choose from them, live or studio, you can't go wrong.
Yes, what this person said...
Basically yes this SONG debuted in their first self-titled album... but Alchemy Live is a live concert album.
I still have my VHS of this show lol.
(For the Millenials, VHS is what he had before DVDs... For the Gen Z, VHS is what we had before Netflix.)
Agree with
Great reaction! You nailed it - that performance was super clean and pretty much flawless. Nothing was covered up by distortion or effects - that band was 100% synchronized, in the groove, and working together as one - and they knew it. The swagger, the energy, the breakdown, the build-up...absolutely superb!
Yep, no overdubs in post-production that are normally applied to live recordings to 'fix' mistakes. They genuinely were that phenomenal.
It's made all the more remarkable by just how clean Knopfler's guitar sound is - no where to hide there.
What I love is the communication between Mark and Terry. That low repetitve riff before the breakdown when Terry is mouthing along is clearly the signal to count bars from there. What a tight band.
Today marks 2 months since my dad passed away at age 78. Dire straits was his favorite group hands down. This song has popped up in my YT feed a lot yesterday and today which is crazy!!! Anyway, I’ve heard this song plenty of times, and it’s nice to see and hear someone react to it for the first time and see them in disbelief. Mark knopfler guitar playing is so good and has such a distinct sound. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thanks for giving me a fond memory of my dad
Quite simply the best life performance of any song, by any band, anywhere at any time!
There are no words that can do this justice, you just have to experience it for yourself.
I would say it's ONE of the best, but how can we objectively say any is the best when we had the likes of Queen, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray, Mister Mr., Cher, Led Zeppelin, George Thurgood And many more that were all champeen live performers. Man, we had the best of the best in so many ways it's ridiculous. We were the lucky generation and man I feel sorry for the ones who follow us because they will never have what we had.
Masters of their craft and arguably one of the world’s best guitarists of all time. The drummer Terry Williams had his dad in the audience this night.
Agree, except you misspelt "unarguably". 😃
@@jjc5407 dont go there.....thats a whole different argument
"What just happened?" You've just been enlighten!!!
Yes, This live version is amasing, but for me, the studio version is just perfect. You have to hear it!!
I also prefer the studio version, a little slower tempo and more atmosphere, which makes the story telling more enjoyable and then he cuts loose with the long solo near the end.
Amazing not amasing
The energy in this live version is spectacular, but what the studio version gives you is the incredible tastiness of Knopfler's little guitar licks in between the vocal lines, which are the highlights of the song, IMO.
Like the feel of the studio version, but..............THOSE DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS brilliant performance was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, UK during two days in late July, 1983.
It's one of those unforgettable experiences... and all the treasured memories from that particular moment in time come rushing back - every time I watch someone react to this absolutely amazing performance...
For a Rock Band you are not going to get any better Orchestration than this. A work of Genius. Mark and His band take you on a journey thru their music. You can close your eyes and they take you somewhere in your life that builds memories and makes you feel Life is really worth the journey. God Bless Mark and all the people who helped Him compose and perform His and their music. A Masterpiece to the Performing arts.
Congratulations. You've discovered the masters... Dire Straits. Really, no words
I was very fortunate to see Mark in concert back in 2015. Much older, some licks weren't as fast, but never has a cleaner, purer sound come out of a guitar than what he can do. It was pure heaven from 6 strings.
First of all you're a lucky man, I've watched on here his much later performances, again every thing from his genius.
At his age, and nothing can stop age, your fingers, wrists and arms stiffen, you can't play so fast, I've seen in his videos shaking his left wrist, one actually when he's playing, and sometimes it hurts, I know. He retired from touring in 2019......
So much brilliant beauty in Dire Straits; don't stop here! "Tunnel of Love" is a rich track I strongly recommend.
That drummer is Terry Williams 🔥🎶🥁 He is amazing!!
It is amazing the difference in the sound of a guitar when it is being played with a pick, and when it is being played using fingers. Plus the versatility finger-picking gives one adds a whole new dimension to playing... which Mark clearly demonstrates here.
the difference is huge. not necessarily better or worse, but different. for this style of music, the finger style is perfect! mark knopfler is a master.
Mark Knoffler is a shredding virtuoso. I saw them live what feels like a lifetime ago and it’s still one of the favourite concerts I’ve ever been to. Yes, Mark is effortlessly cool. Not sure what “it” is but he’s got “it” in spades!
"What it is" yessss 😉
Mark can play lots of styles beside shredding, few can duplicate him . He is also a number one story teller ( lecturer at University ).
I see and hear a very good band having a lot of fun and taking their fans with them... very unique sound.
I with ya... just can't keep still. You gotta move.
I love how the Director of this live coverage “discovers” the incredible drumming of Terry Williams and begins to feature him as much as Knopfler. Absolutely great concert performance.
Nah, he didn't "discover" him... he gave him a few video moments of his time on the pedestal just in case his old man missed his efforts! ;)
What just happened? Exactly what happens when you have talented musicians, at their peak, performing live!!! Nothing beats these old rockers performing live, as the new artists just don't have the same work ethic.
Heck, saw Journey live a few months ago - for the 50th anniversary tour. They killed it!!! Talent and craftsmanship win all the time. Performing live, it's just magic. No auto tune. No tape with lip singing. Just pure ability.
Saw that show also and Toto was equally awesome
I'm a huge guitar fan, but....that drummer deserves massive respect. He was killing it!
Always great to watch someone discovering Mark Knopfler. One of the best guitar players out there - and he makes it seem like nothing at all, he seems to chill and laid-back while making that guitar SING...And yes, Terry Williams absolutely killed it!
Mark Knopfler is not only one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he's also one of the greatest vintage race car collectors and racer who races them.
One of the greatest live performances ever, from one of the greatest bands ever, fronted by one of the greatest guitarists ever. A brilliant reaction from you & I applaud you for not stopping & starting the vid! Your face was a picture & if we ever meet, the drinks are on me 🙂

Went to work!! 😊😊😅😅😅🎉🎉❤❤
This is all the all the more amazing when you consider he's playing that guitar with his fingers! No plectrum involved.
This came out the year I left high school. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the business. Roll on 40 years and my son went to see him a couple of years back and said he is still amazing! Their hit Money For Nothing was the first ever video played on MTV.
Sorry, but you are mistaken. "Video killed the radio star" by The Buggles, was the first video played on MTV. 🙂

I could listen to this daily for 100 years
drumming Terry Williams isn't the guy that played on debut album. For the London gig "Alchemy" they took him. And he literarily stole the show. At least for "Sultans". Rumors say that Andy's father was at the audience that night to see his son on stage first time ever in his life. Good job Terry, good job Guys. God bless the Artists.
Thanx for great reaction.
Fantastic reaction. Has to be Telegraph Road from this same Alchemy Live concert next.
That’s a must, without doubt 🎶🎸
Mark Knopfler is such an underrated quitar player. Always been a huge fan.
He’s not underrated at all he’s one of the finest musicians ever.
Under-rated? He's rated just right. Right at the fkn top!
One of the best live recordings any era any genre. Drummer is going bonkers
Always leaves me speechless; extraordinary performance - and he doesn't use a pick!!!
Mark is amazing, I've been going to his shows every few years since forever. It's nt all this fast and furious, but he' one of the best songwriters in the rock and roll era. Amazing lyrically as well as musically. His later solo stuff is also amazing, not just the Dire Straits era.
I could listen to Mark Knopfler opposite of James Taylor on "Sailing to Philadelphia" once per day for the rest of my life and it will never lose its luster for me. Mark's back-and-forth with the whole dueling guitar/voice is a pleasure.
He also writes music for films including the brilliant soundtrack for the 1984 film ‘Local Hero’
He wrote the music for the cult classic “The Princes Bride” too including Storybook Love

I was just about to say that!!
Going Home is just stellar...
An instrumental track that never ceases to move me...
His album "Riding with the King" featuring BB King is really great too...
One of the best live performances ever. And so clean, as you said, Salvo.I always get a kick out of seeing Mark wearing his trademark sweatband, because he's so relaxed and low key, that it's hard to imagine him EVER breaking a sweat. ;) Such a superb, elegant guitarist! I could listen to him play 'til the cows come home. Plus, the entire band hit it out of the park that night, too, especially Terry on drums. Regarding the studio version of the song, it's definitely worth a listen. It's played more like a mid-range schuffle, with the drums taking much more of a back seat. (There was actually a different drummer playing on the album, Pick Withers, who has a background in jazz.) But you can hear Mark's vocals a little clearer, and catch the entire (true) story that the song tells. The studio verson was, of course, how we all were first introduced to it, and it went over big. Didn't sound like anything else on the radio.
pick was the drummer for uk prog band "spring" that were known for 3 mellotron players.
And that’s the way you do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤
Grew up on this band. More talent than all of today music combined
The greatest guitarist.. Humble as always
I have been waiting for this for over a year, they truly are the best live band.
Telegraph road from the same concert next it’s better.
I almost agree with you..Telegraph Road is sublime but this just - just - tops it 😉
Tunnel Of Love from Alchemy is the best
We all have our favourites, when I saw them Romeo and Juliet stole the show!!
" Brothers in arms " is a must 😊
You’ve just watched the greatest progression of guitar solos ever on stage. It was a total pleasure to be in the crowd for one of the concerts of that tour
The band is completely insane. Telegraph road is my fave of this performance. Just amazing.
@@davidfeltz8697 oh yes Telegraph Road - love it. I bought my mate Love over Gold album for his 18th birthday (vinyl in those days of course!) as we were all deep into the Dire Straits journey as each album was released.
Thanks for your great reaction to & appreciation of this amazing live performance by Dire Straits. By monitoring the ebb & flow of their tempo & sound levels they gave us a mini concert in 1 song. The lead vocalist & guitarist Mark Knopfler is in a class all by himself. He has total command of his incredible guitar riffs & doesn't even use a guitar pick (it's all fingerpicking :). Highly recommend another Dire Straits live performance - "Heavy Fuel ". Thank you.
Yes, love salvog reaction.
Mark knopfler's note selection through the entire song is totally unique . listen to any other lead guitarist you like and you will not hear such usual chords and individual note selection like that . absolutely mind blowing. i especially like the quiet phrases . listen carefully when he drops the volume on particular leads throughout the song . i think those are some of the best aspects to the song
I was thinking the exact same thing. The improvisions were impressive for sure. I think there was some everyday magic too.
It's the way he colours the phrases - totally unique to him
You just witnessed one of the greatest bands ever, and performance!
12:07 - that’s a praise and worship vibe
I’ve been waiting for this one! ❤️😀 I’m so glad you got to experience watching this!
Knopfler is a maestro, and the drummer completely smashes this performance.
NO! I don’t believe it! Salvo, you haven’t heard this song before??? How did we let you get this far into your journey without hearing this??? It’s a major stop along the way in rock…….mind blown that this is new to you. 🤯
That drum fill around 6:05: You and Mark both went WOW and then Mark took off.
My absolute favourite of Dire Straights!! I've been waiting for you to do it!
You should listen to the studio version, its a classic. 'So far away' is a great melancholy song by them.
the guys just plain enjoying themselves, having a ball. calling elvis is another good straits one
Mark is an incredible musician. You're going to love so many Dire Straits songs!
That drum fill became legendary after this came out.
Never ceases to amaze me. That performance is a classic for all times. Thanks for covering it!
I grew up listening to this live version that my dad had recorded on a casette, then we lost it and for years I couldn't really enjoy the studio version as much. With the internet I was able to find it again and it remains my favourite. Also, I haven't seen many people here recommending Tunnel of Love from this same concert, so leaving this here too!
My dire straight story.
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
I've seen them live 5 times and Knopfler solo once. They were a superb band. My favourite guitarist.
Their song Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite sings ever!! Mark Knopfler is a master. 🤌🤌
For more of the "beach boardwalk" feel you must check out a live version of Tunnel of Love... just as masterful as Sultans.
This music is as "organic" as it gets,, right down to the root. They never lose it. It's like the music owns the band. It's a river of sound. Magnificent! No matter how many times I have listened to this, in a few different sets, it's always so captivating, it invigorates you.
Well said!
So many great songs from these guys and this solo is one of the best ever.
