He wrote it following his failed marriage. The dark moody lyrics and music, angry drums, all represent how he felt during the time leading up to it.
Also a fun side note, the bassist with the big beard is Lee Sklar, guy is credited on over 2000 albums and has played on well over 25,000+ songs. Dude is a legend in his own right

His wife cheated which is why he said if (the other Guy) was drowning that "I would not lend a hand" and why he said that he saw his face, which was the "first and last time that we ever met". I saw Phil and his old Group( he was the drummer)=GENESIS play their first ever Top Of The Bill performance in 1972 in South East London England. Phil is from London but can not play anymore after 50+ years. THE REASON that this is so memorable is ,partially, BECAUSE ,of the long build up and anticipation and suspense that you were becoming impatient with , my friend. LOL

The crowd starts to cheer. They have been waiting and waiting and waiting - and it’s about to DROP!
I’ve watched several vocal coaches react to this and talk about how difficult it is to sing like he does while playing the drums like he does. Simply one of the best ever.

Everything from Jimi Hendrix, Al Green, George Benson, from soul, the blues, Motown, and Bruce Springsteen,Bob Seager, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and the big sound was incredible. I saw all of them live, I doubt any other generation will ever experience this. It's a damn shame. Yeah, sae Phil Collins do this song and the other's he was known for. It was such a different time.

I LOVE watching people discover Phill Collins for the first time!! Phil was the drummer and a back-up vocalist in the early line-up of Genesis, when Peter Gabriel was their lead singer and primary lyricist. They were all in their teens and early 20s then. It's totally worth looking up some of those videos of their performances and tv guest appearances. Phill took over singing when Peter left. Eventually, the line-up was just Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks.
In the 80s, Phill simultaneously recorded/toured with Genesis AND had a solo career AND also acted in a few tv shows and movies. AND he played drums on a few tracks on a few of Peter Gabriel's solo albums.
He is one of the best percussionists to ever bang a drum. A real legend. PLEASE go down that rabbit hole and react to more of this amazing man's music. You won't be sorry.

The reason he'd left the stage before the start of the song, was to have his head-mic and in-ear monitors fitted under his shirt. Hence the long, drawn out intro - to give him time.
If you watch the rear catwalk as he's walking around the stage during the earlier part of the song, you'll notice that there are no drums on the catwalk. They came out of the floor when he was about 10 feet (3m) from them - just in time for that epic drum drop. Perfect timing.
Finally, I take my hat off not only to the other musicians on stage, but the sound, and lighting, crews efforts that went into making this one of the best all-time live performances in musical history.
    Thanks for posting.

@@cazzychaps Actually, in this case it wasn't. According to interviews with PC I've seen, at THIS show it was played at about 60% through the show. The encore seems to have been 'Sussudio', in which he had his full percussion section, his backing singers, and his horn section on stage with him to accept the applause of the audience. In fact, I cannot remember him EVER using 'In The Air' as an encore. Yes, it's his most popular song, but the rest of the musicians would have felt 'cheated' to have not appeared onstage for the last song.

Phil Collins started out as a child actor in the London theater in the 60s. He was one of the many round-faced kids who played the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver! In the 70s he started playing drums with Genesis. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of the band, but he quit the band and went solo and so Phil stepped up to sing lead. He could sing and play drums on the records because of multi-track recording, but they brought in other drummers to play on tour. He started a solo career in the 80s, and this song was from his first solo album. He became one of the biggest pop stars of the 80s.
As far as technique, he was one of the team that invented the "gated reverb" sound you hear on the drums in so many 80s songs. You know that if you hit a drum and listen to the sound fade away, it drops off gradually until it's gone. But if you're playing it through a microphone, you can clip the electronic signal so that it cuts off after a certain point. So you hear the initial strike and a little bit of fade, and then suddenly (instead of a gradual fade) nothing. They had to do it with microphone placement and analog equipment initially, but eventually it became part of the digital production toolkit. You can hear it clearly on the studio recording of this song, and also on "Intruder" on Peter Gabriel's third solo album... Phil played drums for that. And then on like a million 80s recordings until people got tired of it and decided not to do it for a while. But now it's an option that people can use or not as they choose.
