He wrote this about his divorce. Inspiration
Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. In a 2016 interview, Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."

He was not 'cool' during this performance, he was angry, channeling feelings from his divorce. The words are much more striking when taken in this context.
"A song about loss, divorce, anger and frustration all wrapped into one of Phil Collin's first singles, "In The Air Tonight" is an emotional tale from Phil's own life."

Back in the 80s when this started getting air play, you could watch patrons of noisy bars, restaurants, and other places go completely silent for the drum fill to come in. Then they'd go back to talking. It was strange and funny. I bought this album the week it came out (being a huge Genesis fan). I took it home and played it repeatedly. My older sister came down the hall to my bedroom to ask who it was. She went out and bought the album later that week. It's been called the most iconic few bars in music.

Despite all the times I've watched this, Phil is so subtle getting sticks to hand that with the benefit of 35 years watching my best friend, a pro drummer in his own right, I can't decide if he pulls the sticks from his stick bag with the left hand (very small movement), or if the sticks are concealed in a specialty pocket on his right that is suggested by one of the early backstage shots. For those unaware, the stick bag is designed to be attached to the body of a drum, usually a floor tom. Because the right side is stage back as he approaches the kit, the move would be as well concealed as going to the bag. If anyone was there or has other insight on this, I love diving into these details, that add to the epic drum drop.

  • @Old_Man001

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis recently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

    • @gwumpyolman
      @gwumpyolman ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have to agree with the other old man here. This is a great live performance. I wont say the best, but just because it really depends on my mood at the time. There are a number of 70's and 80's bands and performers that I think you need to see live to get a feel for a real show. KISS, AC/DC, Van Halen, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, and so many more people that are such a treat live. I threw a couple of country guys in because they put on a hell of a show. I will get hate for this, but I am ok with it. But Phil does a GREAT show. His timing is perfection, his dedication to his craft is amazing. A+ talent. I heard he ended one of his marriages by sending her a fax. That is a fancy text, sent with a special machine that printed the message on paper, kids.

Well, I was there and I saw what you did

You're absolutely right... I just saw him live last Friday in Hannover and his appearance kinda broke my heart. You could really see how age and sickness has ravaged him. I was still a child when he was at his peak, but my father was a big fan then and so was I, and in my mind he was still this smirking, funny man who was not afraid to say his mind and had these great songs and awesome musicvideos. None of that but age has changed (when he talked a bit in concert he called Putin a "fucking idiot" ^^) but it was still heartbreaking to see. It kind of consoled me that it is his son now who plays the drums but I can only imagine that he misses it. Everyone knows that age really IS inevitable, but knowing and seeing really hit differently. I am so happy I got to see him that night. His voice and character have not changed at all. One of the greatest artist of all time for me.

I am 61 yrs old grandma, and STILL do the airdrums whenever I hear this song, and the goosbumps when he starts singing! Got most of his, Genesis and Peter Gabriels songs. Phil Collins is not a singer that can drum, but a drummer (an AWSOME one at that) that can sing!

This is so iconic if you grew up in the 80's. It was also the soundtrack for the show Miami Vice which was beyond huge everywhere . It always played when the v v handsome & v cool Don Johnson drove his Ferrari round Miami at night.

This song has arguably the most iconic Drum in music. That first part when he first sits down at the drums (half way through the song) takes the song to the next level. This song and Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) are my two favourites by far

I remember watching another live version of this song with my dad. When Phil played that famous opening drum part, I said, “That was a drum fill.” But not knowing the term, my dad replied, “Yes, I know that’s Phil.”

The voice effects you heard were done with a vocoder. And my two favorite Maggie expressions were at 5:45 when you realized you'd heard this song before and then when Phil dropped the most famous drum hits at 16:32!
And tell your mom to get you some drums!

Saying you don’t know Phill Collins, is like saying you don’t know Beethoven or Mozart! Well maybe not quite that bad, but he truly is a legend. His music is phenomenal! I’m sure you’d know some of it if you heard the first few lines!

In the early 80's, a close artist friend of my sister had a temp job as a receptionist at an art gallery when they were doing a showing for high end clients. Despite being a fan of both Dire Straights and Phil Collins, she wasn't hugely aware of what they looked like (no MTV in the UK in those days, and it wasn't the kind of thing she focused on).
When one person entering identified himself with a mumbled "Mnoffler" she made him repeat himself more clearly (it was Mark Knopfler). When another guy just said his name was "Phil", she asked "Phil Who?".
Neither of them were at all unpleasant about it, and I understand that Phil even referred to the interaction sometime later in an interview as a grounding experience about not taking fame too seriously.

What I found great was how you had just commented on the way he was 'just walking around, singing', as is drums were coming into view, and your astonishment at how he dropped his explosive drumming into the mix.
I've compared his walking around the stage as an act of staking out his territory, showing the audience subconsciously that for the length of the concert, that stage belonged to HIM and the band.

I saw him with Genesis back in the 80's and solo, he was brilliant. So much carisma. So sad, that he can't do this anymore. We love you Phil! Everyone who grow up in the 80's can remember at least one time playing airdrums on the dashboard in the car to this song.

If you enjoyed the ethereal intro you should try some of Phil Collins with Genesis from the '70s. Seconds Out is an epic live album from after Peter Gabriel left, specifically try "The Carpet Crawlers," "Afterglow," and "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)." If you like them, try some of the stuff with Peter Gabriel. If that's too '70s prog rock for you try a great love song (my wedding song) "Follow You, Follow Me" from ...And Then There Were Three. Then for the rock and roll Genesis try out songs from Duke, Abacab, and the self-titled Genesis (1993).
