Epic is the only word. He used to describe himself as a drummer who sings a little. 😂 He also did a memorable performance in the 1985 Live Aid concert. He performed at Wembly, took the Concorde to America and performed there on the same day. We were all in awe watching it. So glad you didn’t pause during the drum solo. It deserves its space.
The oh so casual walk, arriving at the drum kit at exactly the right moment as they rise up before him. The whole video is perfect in setting the scene. Phil described this song as lulling the audience in and then punching them in the face! 😂😂😂
A word for phil. After touring for so long, and the toll that takes on the body, he had spinal surgery in 2007 that left him with nerve damage and by and large sitting, i dont think hes completely unable to walk, but severely limits. He also had pancreatitis and diabetic. With all that, but mostly his back, has forced him to retire, at least for the most part.
It’s not even about physical demand actually. The difficulty lies in the fact that the brain is only capable of sustaining a single rhythm at a time. When you sing and play guitar or piano it’s not so hard as the rhythm and BPM follow the vocal. Drums however do not. They have a different beat to vocals and this is what makes combining them so hard.
@@Dr_KAP Which is why there are only a handful of fine drummers who can also sing lead simultaneously. Aside from Phil, Levon Helm and Don Henley come to mind. Karen Carpenter was also an incredible drummer, but I don't know if she ever drummed and sang at the same time.
Great live version! Phil Collins is best known as the drummer/singer of the rock band Genesis in the 70's & for his solo career. He has had so many great hits such as "Another Day In Paradise", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Against All Odds", "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Take Me Home", "Two Hearts", "A Groovy Kind Of Love", "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "You Can't Hurry Love" etc.
FUN FACTS…Written bc of Divorce, Cheating, & Phil was pissed! Most people don’t know Phil is left handed. So his drums are set up exactly backwards of “normal”. The reason you don’t see them until he gets to them, is bc they are on risers under the stage. They are timed perfectly for when he gets there. He has retractable sticks (barely perceivable straps around wrist). He doesn’t have to reach for them, like most drummers do bc they weee already with him! No flow interruption! Then he just lets it fly! I am a subscriber bc I love what you do. You are very good at it. I’ll be back!

Phil Collins is a true artist. His volume and quality of work is mind-boggling. Every song, every performance the man gives 100%. Oh, by the way he was the drummer and backup singer for Genesis from 1970. Peter Gabriel (yes, that Peter Gabriel) sang lead until he left in 1975 for his solo career. Collins took over and Genesis never looked back. Amazing videos all. 'Another Day in Paradise' (his solo work) will offer another side of his genius. But anything he does is golden. He has had two Oscar nominations (winning one).
Yes Saeed, this is one of the most atmospheric and suspenseful songs - and it is standing the test of time. This song will still be a classic in years to come. And what a clear and wonderful voice, he's not just an amazing drummer, a very talented artist.
As you know Phil Collins is an icon. He is so awesome. Indeed, this song is about his divorce, He has such a strong stage presence, and his drum solo is exceptional. Singing and playing drums is very difficult at best. He does it with ease. Phil can no longer play the drums due to a serious back injury, however he taught his son to play them. He can still sing. You are right about his emotion regarding this song. He was reacting to his divorce. His studio release was in 1981 and this performance was in 2004. Great reaction. Thank you.
The "In the Air Tonight" scene is arguably the most memorable and famous scene from the Miami Vice television series, and is regularly cited as one of the greatest, if not the most influential moments in the history of television. It occurs in the pilot episode "Brother's Keeper", or, when the episode is split into two parts as it often is for syndication, "Brother's Keeper (Part II)".
I had the pleasure of seeing him perform this song live. He was on tour with Clapton. He played drums and Greg Philinganes was on keyboards. It was 2 hours of musical excellence.
I highly recommend listening to "Mama"; first the video it give you the vibe, then the live performance at Knebworth 1990 - it was impeccable. This song can be placed in any situation. Phil has said it was brought on by his divorce (it was not pretty) and he wrote another song about his divorce (with an amazing live version) "I Don't Care Anymore". But he also played a guest role on the original "Miami Vice" show where he played a con man who witnessed a murder and this song was in the episode.

The effect behind is vocals was a vocoder but that wasn't added to his vocals but was done by his keyboard player. The vocoder is basically a synth which is hooked up to a microphone and you play notes but the sound is furthermore shaped by the input you give with your voice and you don't have to sing in tune cause that is dealty with by the keyboard of the synth.
The song is about his wife cheating on him. This video will never get old! I loved this song when it came out and all these years later it’s still one of my favorites. You may no know but Phill also does the sound track to Disney’s Tarzan and Brother Bear. He is an icon that can never be beat.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share some info! Brother Bear was my little brother's favorite movie. He used to watch it all the time. Must look up that song 😄
A two and a half minute ascent into the mood he wants his audience to experience before he even walks to center stage. That generates *anticipation* and it was time well spent. :)
I am so glad you got turned on to Phil Collins. He's an amazing performer! You got the lyrics right on. He was going through a betrayal at the time. I was too and his songs helped me so much at the time. Check out Genesis too. He was great with them too. ❤❤ 15:07
Definitely the best version 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Best divorce song ever written 😂😂 Don't make Phil angry Phil also produced and played drums on Frida's (ABBA) first solo album after they split. You can hear his signature drumming in the song I Know There's Something Going On.
His episode on Miami Vice 'Phil the Shill' is so good. And that got him a movie contract for 'Buster'. I recently found his short murder mystery movie 'Calliope' and love it. It's a bit of an Alfred Hitchcock farce.
This song came out in '81 - it's now over 40 years old and is more iconic, well known & holds up better than many musical offerings these days - I was obsessed with this song growing up! .... the cheer that goes up as he reaches the drums & then when the drum beat hits..... feel free to name a more legendarily iconic & well known drum performance .... I'll wait! 😆
Thanks Saeed! I love Phil Collins! What a LEGEND!! He is just so absolutely gifted and I never got to see him perform live so the videos will have to do!
I mentioned in my comments to James Taylor singing You've Got A Friend the bass player Leland Sklar, here you see him again.Drummer Chester Thompson and guitarist Daryl Stuermer played with Genesis on their live shows, remember seeing them in early 1978 at the concert in Leiden.
The definition of a spectacle! A perfect demonstration of the power of music and great musicians to amplify and expand the lyrics in a visceral way. Phil’s explosive drumming is a cathartic experience not just for him but for the audience. This quality appears to be missing in much of today’s music.
Fun fact - the guitarist with the long white bears is Leland Sklar - he and his wife have a pair of beautiful Basset Hounds, and they are on Facebook. They had an older pair who have now passed, and they used to dress them up in funny hats. Priceless. Leland played with so many greats. th-cam.com/video/Lq3r2hUsqwQ/w-d-xo.html That video is a funny story about Phil Collins and Leland Sklar.
So Saeed, i really enjoy watching you Phil Collins and i can alao see the joy in your eyes watching his live performance. Hope you start listening to more Phil Collins and Genesis and start your journey into the big rabbit hole of hits in Phil Collins era. Super reaction as usual 👍💪
Came here for the expression on your face as he sat down to play the drums. Gotta echo an earlier comment to also give props to another drummer/vocalist in Queen’s Roger Taylor. He could have been a lead vocalist in any other rock band.
phil Collins once had a knock at the door of his Surrey farm, from a desperate neighbour who needed £10,000 to keep his house after a messy divorce. Phil lent him the money, interest free, and told him to only pay it back, if and when he could afford to. Two years later, the man returned with a cheque for £10k. so funny enough he saved this man from drowning financially
Someone online said that the verse is supposed to start "IF you told me you were drowning.." The way Phil sings it, he kind of swallows the word "if". He was anticipating word of the finalizing of his divorce (and his wife had cheated on him). Also, check out his performance at Live Aid of his song Against All Odds, he plays the piano and sings with a lot of emotion. Such a talented man.
I’d known this song since it first came out, and it wasn’t until the Eminem callback that I even considered the possibility of witnessing a drowning. The meaning always was rather clear, as a hypothetical, to me.
Kudos, young man, you just made my night LOL. In addition to being a musician and writer, I was also a Professor of Creative Writing, Literary Studies and Literary Theory before going on permanent disability a few years ago, and I have NEVER heard anyone reference Roland Barthes' concept of 'the death of the author', and appropriately, in the context of a music reaction. 👍
The look on your face when he hit those drums said it all, my dear friend. And the anticipation leading up to that moment was just as good. Great, great, great reaction . Thank you. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂. Phil said it was about his divorce. He evidently caught her being unfaithful. This man is a legend, and yes, his live concerts are epic. Any time you get the chance to hear his songs, do the live version. You miss so much with the audio versions, even though they are great too😊.
This song is about when he caught his first wife with another man. His voice is always so perfect. No matter what he does. You can't even tell that he's playing the drums it seems flawless. He's not even breathing hard playing the drums and singing. He is an absolute icon as far as I'm concerned, very talented. He will always be one of my favorites. This song is 40 years old, and it's just as good as ever was. If not better!!! Came out in the 80s when I was in my 20s.

Must look up that song 😄
should check out Genesis too, love the reactions 👍
A two and a half minute ascent into the mood he wants his audience to experience before he even walks to center stage. That generates *anticipation* and it was time well spent. :)
I am so glad you got turned on to Phil Collins. He's an amazing performer! You got the lyrics right on. He was going through a betrayal at the time. I was too and his songs helped me so much at the time. Check out Genesis too. He was great with them too. ❤❤ 15:07
Your analysis is exceptional. From the performance/experience to the singing and lyrics. Excellent.
Definitely the best version 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Best divorce song ever written 😂😂 Don't make Phil angry
Phil also produced and played drums on Frida's (ABBA) first solo album after they split.
You can hear his signature drumming in the song I Know There's Something Going On.
This and Procol Harum’s Whiiter Shade of Pale are my favorite live performances.
Collins is also an actor. You can see him put that to good use with his facial expressions here. The anger just emanates off his face.
I'll wait! 😆
❤Phil❤
He wrote the song to the man his wife cheated with. Don't ever piss Phil off, or he'll write a song about it for the world to hear!!🎵🎼🎶🎸🎙🎤🎧🎹🥁🔥🔥
I saw Phil in concert about 5 years ago, and he was amazing. And his teenage son was on drums.
One of the most iconic performances ever!
Thanks Saeed! I love Phil Collins! What a LEGEND!! He is just so absolutely gifted and I never got to see him perform live so the videos will have to do!
Such an incredible song and performance. Mindblowing! Thanks so much for watching
I can watch this video over and over again, no clue how many times I have watched this particular one
Best drums intro in the world. So genuinely simple, even I could play :D
He said in an interview that this song was about a divorce.
He was going through a divorce and it's about that. The drowning thing was made up, an urban legend
Genesis - Turn It On.
CLASSIC!! Had to crank up the volume, I think I woke up my Basset Hounds!
Definitely want to explore more of his music and Genesis is on my list too.
Thanks so much for watching!
This IS quite a performance, Saeed. Glad you enjoyed this!! June
It really is! That was an experience ! Thanks for watching!
Epic performance amazing musicianship!
True Legend!🔥🎶 Another AMAZING Live Performance is by The Eagles singing Hotel California!! EPIC!!!
He describes himself as "A drummer who sings a bit "
Oh, did not know that. He is definitely great at both 😃
This has to be one of the most epic concert performances of all time. Wish I had experienced it
My favorite song from Phil, he has a fantastic voice and is a good drummer! Thanks Saeed and Debbie.
Great drummer, imho
@@helenespaulding7562 Yes, just listen to him with the jazz/fusion band Brand X. The dude is a GOAT.
@@rk41gator ever heard that. I’ll check it out
Came here for the expression on your face as he sat down to play the drums. Gotta echo an earlier comment to also give props to another drummer/vocalist in Queen’s Roger Taylor. He could have been a lead vocalist in any other rock band.
One of my favourite performances to watch, it's pretty awesome!
Perfectly timed…brilliant!
A legend, seen him in concert and it the experience of a lifetime
Awesome you saw him live!
phil Collins once had a knock at the door of his Surrey farm, from a desperate neighbour who needed £10,000 to keep his house after a messy divorce. Phil lent him the money, interest free, and told him to only pay it back, if and when he could afford to. Two years later, the man returned with a cheque for £10k. so funny enough he saved this man from drowning financially
I get tears in my eyes everytime i see this video.
Phil & Genesis ...theres's a rabbit hole .. this song is a true test of your speakers
The guy who looks like Gandalf….hes just in the zone….thats the iconic bassist Leland Sklar again. You last saw him yesterday with James Taylor 1971
Always a pleasure to spend time with you, another great reaction
Excellent performance 🔥🔥🔥
What a performance from the drummer that sings a little bit the great Phil Collins... loved your reaction to it too.
Phil says, that first he's a drummer, and a very good one, that after discovered that can sing. I guess it was after Peter Gabriel left Genesis.
Nothing like it!! Its fabulous !!! Soooooogood. I got teary eyed. Just GOT TO ME !!!!!!! CANT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT IT !!!!!!
