The reason Snake became a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is because Hideo Kojima had originally requested Snake to be in Melee, but didn't make the cut due to time constraints.
On the other side of the spectrum, Sonic got added to Brawl very late into development which is why he's literally only at the end of the subspace emissary I assume because the rest of the story had already been written so it was the only place they could insert him. lol.
I had no idea people didn’t like this game, I freaking loved it Side note: Link’s smash sounded so clean in brawl but they fucked up the SFX in the one after, shame
fr bro same. i cant even begin to comprehend why somebody would dislike this game. They put so much effort into it and was a major step from melee. They dont make too many games like this anyone man. Number 1 in my book
Snake got in as a personal favour Masahiro Sakurai did for Hideo Kojima. Kojima's son loved Super Smash Bros 64, and when Kojima heard that his friend Sakurai was making a sequel, he asked if Snake could be in it so that his son could play as Daddy's character. Melee was too far into development by that point to add any new characters, but Sakurai said he would try and get him in if there was a threequel. When development started on Brawl, Sakurai called Kojima and asked if he was still interested in Snake being in Smash. Kojima said "Hell, yes!" and that was that.

I think a youtuber ( kneecaps ) said it best. "If you don't give enough room for the competitive side, you don't allow your game to expand and grow via the community, if you give too much too much to the competitive side it becomes you're bad, you're bad, YOU'RE BAD"
Personally I'd say Brawl has been my favorite for the overall experience. Ultimate has some of the best experience in the core fighting game, but I miss a lot of the single player and bonus features in Brawl.
Agreed. The cutscenes have an unnecessarily dreadful atmosphere that I never liked either. I still watched them, but they just feel *off* for some reason.
I grew up playing them all. But I definitely played brawl the most. Every game has it's own crutch in terms of balance. But random slipping in brawl was probably the stupidest thing Nintendo has done in smash.
Tripping was a response to the competitive metagame of Melee meant to prevent the excessive wavedashing that so polarized the character tier list. Unfortunately, making tripping random put unreasonable emphasis on camping and air game, which itself polarized the metagame (albeit to a lesser extent).
In defense of the art style: I actually always really liked it, even as a 10 year old. It always seemed like a darker and more mature approach to classic Nintendo characters, which made it seem so epic to me. Yeah it might not fit in with the rest of Nintendo games, but to me that set it apart as a more serious game (in a good way). And the intro music is so epic.
Brawl was my first smash bros game and overall the perfect introduction to Nintendo's history at the time. Given the fact I was just a 8 year old little kid who'd only played Kirby and Animal Crossing, the hours I spent pouring over trophy descriptions taught me everything I knew about Nintendo. That alone makes me respect Brawl. It came out at the perfect time for new fans.
This is a good game. The good out does the bads. The addicting coin launcher (my game always crashes when I play it which is sad :( )is also super addicting and fun to find nintendo people you have never heard of
@@PorkyMinch Last good Smash singleplayer content, in my opinion. Smash 4 had way less with the ditching of adventure mode, and Smash Ultimate has a lot of singleplayer content, but it's all unrewarding garbage. @@commscan314 that’s really not giving it enough credit. People didn’t like World of Light because it wasn’t in the vein of the Subspace Emissary and everyone just expected it to be when they never said it would. It’s great but it’s totally different from Subspace

@@goldster100 Melee has a cast of about 5-8 viable characters for top level play. Brawl has Metaknight, who dominates top level players with mediocre and predictable play. And at the same time, they clearly invested time toning down and balancing Melee's best characters, theoretically expanding the competitive cast, only to ruin the whole point of that effort with Metaknight. For me, the biggest problem with Brawl however was that it attracted a crowd that refused to turn off items. Even as a party brawler it just turned into item spam. Maybe you don't like Fox Final Destination No Items, but nothing but grabbing and throwing items for 5 minutes meant I couldn't find a local scene worth going to to even play the underlying game.
I prefer Subspace way over World of Light, because Subspace has a plot and is more entertaining. World of Light is just about collecting Spirits and defeating... whatever the hell Galeem is.
Galeem and Dharkon just.... Appeared...... In subspace you got to see the person behind the subspace army is Tabuu, and you saw his abilities. Screw Galeem and echo fighter Dharkon.
I distinctly remember checking the smash dojo on the blue Macintosh in my freshman biology class, and seeing the announcement that Captain Olimar was going to be in the game. I was so hyped. I also remember waiting in line at our town’s brand new GameStop with my friends at midnight, and then staying up until 3AM testing it out with everyone. Remember midnight releases?
64- OG Smash greatness Melee- My childhood nostalgia Brawl- My favorite at the time WiiU/3DS- It was fun, played the most Ultimate- A Godsend I love all smash games. Casually and competitively
64: Haven't played much of it but a good one. Melee: Good but REALLY overrated. Brawl: An essential game for Wii owners like I was. WiiU/3DS: Empty. Ultimate: God level.
Subspace Emissary was easily the best Smash Bros. campaign, with many different levels and an entertaining story. World of Light was repetitive, frustrating, and frankly, disappointing. While Ultimate had some dialogue scenes, it had like ZERO cutscenes. While Brawl had no dialogue, it had a TON of cutscenes.
This game, hands down is where with 4 players is the most chaos. Not to mention why the main theme is the best one in the series, It was beautiful to see Sonic in smash where Nintendo and SEGA shook hands
Hey hey hey, fun fact: Melee's intro was initially designed to be the reveal trailer, meaning it was ALSO used elsewhere. Melee fans who think that their beloved intro was made for the game itself aren't really correct here.
@@toonishigh it is a VERY high quality intro, not downplaying the quality of the game, rather downplaying why people consider it the second coming of christ.
All those Brawl haters need to realise that Smash Bros was originally created by Sakurai for everyone to be able to play, and was literally supposed to be targeted at casual gamers, which is why I don’t understand the arguments for why Brawl is a bad game. It was honestly my favourite until Ultimate, due to things like the Subspace Emissary, which was the coolest thing to me as a kid. I can definitely understand where these competitive smash players are coming from, but definitely not enough to turn away from the franchise.
You already stated why people didn't like brawl. All smash games before and after brawl are already designed to be accessible to casual fans, so Brawl watering down competitive gameplay was pointless. Why make an already casual-friendly fighting game slightly more casual-friendly while significantly damaging the experience of competitive players?
@@joshykeeler My personal gripe with brawl is literally just the random tripping. Everything else aside, the random tripping was the one change that feels like it was primarily made out of spite towards the competitive community.

@@RumchugMusic alright now they aren't the worst at all. Smash is alot different than other styles of fighting, and that creates a competitive fanbase. You can't call them the worst
@@RumchugMusic Casual smash players are the worst. What's the point of playing Smash if you turn on the items? Just play a real Mario party game if you want items. (This is a joke to point out how ridiculous your comment is, I don't think this.) "You aren't allowed to enjoy games the way you want, I already enjoy these games a different way. You have to play different games for enjoying them the way you want." - Someone who is actually the worst Basically what I'm trying to say is, I enjoy smash games for having relatively simple game play for a fighting game while still having a lot of depth due to, among other things, the more robust movement mechanics. And while I am (mostly) a competitive player, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the fact that some of my favourite video game characters are playable. I enjoy this game more than other fighting games, I just don't like those darn items. So I'm presented with two choices: 1) Stop playing the game entirely to play another fighting game that I enjoy less. 2) Keep playing the game and use the option included in the game to turn off items. I chose the second one, and I'm happy with it.

Jeeses99 yeah, no, it's not a competitive fighting game at all, what people call "competitive exploits" are just glitches that weren't fixed before released
melee seems to have been. and we're not talking about hardcore gamers in general, we're talking about hardcore smash fans. now, what is a hardcore smash fan? well, it's a player who dedicates time to mastering the game. As players dedicate time to mastering a game, they become skilled. Hardcore will always be the smaller portion of any fanbase, but it is arguable that they should be a priority when designing the game, and ought to have the more valid opinion on whether the games are good or not. Casual fans can only judge if a game is fun casually, which means in a shallow manner. They know virtually nothing about the mechanics of the game or how it works. Some commenters on here weren't even aware of dashing! a fundamental core mechanic! It's like anything else. You wouldn't value an opinion of someone who likes a car because it drives nice over a auto enthusiast who can tell you all the details of the design, would you? definitely, the enthusiast can tell you which car is better, at least have a better opinion than the casual driver. Even if that car is designed with the casual motorist in mind, the enthusiast can definitely tell you whether it is a good car or not, and all the 5 star casual reviews mean nothing if all the enthusiasts claim it's a terrible car. All that means, is that if you don't really care about cars, and just want a comfortable trip from point A to point B, then this car is shallowly good enough. So if your gaming preference is a shallow show of lights, colors and chaos, then brawl is just fine. But if you care one bit about the actual game, you'd see the turd for what it is.
Apparently one of the main reasons that Snake was the first 3rd party character announced for Brawl was because Hideo Kojima’s son asked Kojima to ask Sakurai to add Snake into the next Smash Bros. game after playing the death out of Melee and wondering why his father’s character wasn’t included.
I actually really enjoyed the Subspace Emmisary and the Subspace World itself, and I hope elements from it are included in Smash Ultimate such as Midair Stadium or Tabuu's Residence as playable stages or heck even the Primid as a new playable character.
i still think brawl is the best game from a casual standpoint, it just had so much to do. felt like you got the most game for your money best investment ever as a 10 year old lets hope ultimate delivers in the singleplayer department :) (no angry birds pls, break the targets was cool)
The subspace emissary is probably the reason why Brawl is my favorite game next to Ultimate. It gave you something to do and I loved how it had its own story, and I loved it overall. Sorry if you disagree I’m just putting my opinion out there.
Brawl was my first smash game and the main theme is so nostalgic for me. I want this game on switch for one reason. Subspace Emmisary. I absolutely love this mode and I completed it countless times as a kid
Brawl’s adventure mode was really well done. Ultimates adventure mode is repetitive yet addicting, with a somewhat disappointing ending After 24 hours of playing Ultimates adventure, I finally got 100% completion and I didn’t really feel anything
Dr. Wily and Pauline spirits may have been some of the most difficult things i've ever done in a video game so far. Some of the spirits were really fun such as sigma, however others like the imprisoned felt like a loading screen. A lot were annoying but most were simply okay. Some really enjoyable parts but most of the time, you'll just be spamming smash attacks and finishing the battles in 5 seconds. Overall i'd give World of light a 6/10
This is the first time I've actually heard people actively disliking brawl. I mean, I'm not a competitive player by any means. The campaign, music, new characters were all phenomenal if I'm going to be honest.
Really. Only the competitive people dislike brawl, then the ones who try to like brawl fall to peer pressure and jump on the train. Brawl literally only had ONE bad thing. That was tripping. Everything else that isn't competitive related like wavedashing and all that other mumbo jumbo that was removed has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game and shouldn't be considered. On a competitive standard? Yes, brawl is the worst smash, but Nintendo isn't about being competitive, they're about having fun as a casual a casual group. The competitive scene is more like stuff for Street Fighter if anything. Now, if we look at brawl the way Nintendo intended, I'd have to say that it is a masterpiece with excellent he graphics, music and a wonderful story mode. And the most underappreciated aspect being the Final Smashes that were added.
Brawl has the best theme music out of all the smash titles, as well as the best story. Tbh I'm not really into this whole "World of Light" and "spirits" thing
Lots of people forget that Sakurai was forced to make this game. It's not like he woke up one day and said "I'm going to make a new smash game." He was forced from upper management and only had a very few time to create it for launching when the Wii came out. This game is one of the best smash games ever.
no but you need to understand that he had 7 years to make it and yes he had to be forced to make it but if he really wanted to take his time and stuff then he could have denied still a good game tho
I mainly played the subspace until the subspace part where you can only play with Ness Luigi and triple d where I found it tedious at to recover (because I can't pk missile) and quitted
puppet oyunda Probably pointless now but on that part I usually leave Ness for last and pick Luigi. His recovery is way better. I put DDD second because he hits heavy but unless you’re sure you’re gonna either edge grab or land, you’re better off using all your jumps first.
I think Brawl handled the adventure mode better. It had CUSTOM levels exclusive to that mode, an ACTUAL story, AND it introduced guest characters and final smashes! It's not the best, but it's better ANY fan gives it credit for!
This game hits me, but mainly for nostalgia purposes. I remember the day it came out, my best friend and I stayed up 7am marathoning the subspace emissary (which we surprisingly beat for how bad we were) and after we beat it we immediately looked at each other and I said" you ready to go to school?" Thank you Nintendo for allowing former children to have kickass memories!

??? The most sold game of all time, and the main character for smash is not surprising. We were all waiting for it. He isn't some nobody, even I would agree with your statement if Shovel Knight got in. But Steve we were all waiting for.
It was almost guaranteed to happen sooner or later, with Microsoft getting closer with Japan, Minecraft being the best selling game ever, with Steve being the mascot, if anything it would be rediculous to say it wasn't gonna happen
I’ve never spent more hours on a Smash Bros game than Brawl, yet when I heard all the negativity surrounding brawl, I got some reason instantly succumbed to peer pressure and said it was the worst smash game.
I think the real worst one is the original, but only because it was so simple. I didn't like brawl, but i can see it appealing to casuals a lot, and melee heavily appeals to competitive people. The most balanced one is smash 4, but that makes sense since they could update that one
Yeah simply cause it's my childhood and everyone complaining about the game, insults the time I spend with the game. I get triggered so fast if people say this is shit. (I'm waiting :) )
“Baby’s First Smash” is more accurate than you think. When I was around 5 or 6 I discovered Brawl while watching some of my distant relatives play Subspace Emissary. Believe it or not my introduction to Nintendo was watching Bowser shoot a dark gun at Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong taking the hit for him. Characters I barely recognized were dying and killing. And thus, that family trip became the most important event in my life. I quickly got hooked Wii games and Nintendo, and honestly, most of the games I played were life changing for me. Subspace Emissary was the first “game” I had ever beat and nothing will ever make me feel the way that credit sequence did. It compelled me enough to play Super Mario Galaxy, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, Twilight Princess, and Majora’s Mask and those were all amazing experiences for child-me. I’m sure I would’ve fallen in love with Nintendo even if I hadn’t picked up the game, but thanks to its charming nature and ability to introduce and flesh out the characters, I decided to become a Nintendo fan right then and there. Definitely the best decision of my life.
Now is around the time when the people who had Wiis / Brawl as little kids can look back on the system and games with rose-tinted nostalgia. But trust me as someone who was an adult out of college when Brawl was released: Even back then, Brawl wasn't considered very good. People figured out how jank it was almost instantly too.
Also worth nothing, one thing which can't be covered in modern reviews is how bad the online play was. "Basic Brawl" was one of the most miserable modes for online play ever devised, 1v1 with randoms wasn't possible, and due to the lack of a fully featured online service, after a while the public online just devolved into Taunt Parties where people just stand around and gang up on who dare to play. You couldn't ban / block anyone who did taunt parties either, so they eventually took over.
Usagi Jojo just because people liked it doesn’t mean it’s through rose tinted glasses. I remember enjoying it very much. This video acknowledges what people might not like about it but that has nothing to do with how enjoyable it is to everyone. Frankly, I don’t care about most of the things people don’t like. It was fun and immersive for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I like competitive gaming but there's something I realized about everything from card games to video games. Where there's competitiveness there is try hard's, saltiness, and the meta. Then I remembered, does making a game more competitive friendly necessarily make it more fun to play? and the answer is no, it doesn't. In fact, a good example from when I was a kid to support this. Back in middle school, a friend of mine sold to another about 20 stacks of random Yugioh cards for three quarters. From there we all just suddenly got into casually playing Yugioh with silly made decks as our whole lunch table pretty much learned how to play together. We would laugh as one of us would play our trump card, Island Turtle. Then there was the fun of showing up next class with a new card that you thought was OP as hell and throwing it into the makeshift deck as your friends start betting chicken nuggets and fries. That's fun. Eventually of course I got better decks, learned to play better etc. would meet once a month and play until I realized that I was not enjoying this game anymore. Mostly because it felt like a cash grab to keep up with the ever changing meta. Rules change to keep the game fresh, but it seriously breaks the game imo when the power creep just keeps climbing just like how power creeps can break a show, or how constant buffs and nerfs can wash out a video game. It seemed like I got used to a deck only to have to buy another one anyway. I ended up selling all my cards for about $10, mostly because they were worth so much less than when I bought them, and they're were so many that they would take too much time to sell. I could've gotten into MTG but I just went away from card games completely anyway. Casual=Fun imo About six months ago I discovered Knight Squad. A really good party game that I recommend to everyone and that I play when there's a lot of people over. Modded smash bros is a great one too. Everybody loves Osama Bin Laden vs Oreo Cookie vs deadpool vs Goku.
@@ivansoto9723 What you said is not totally true. Do you think smash bros melee would still be played if it weren't competitive? There is a huge group live for competitive games. Smash bros Melee would have died nearly 15 years ago if there was a competitive scene. Just look at brawl now, that game is dead.
Well Nintendo thought the same way. They felt trying to make it competitive would be a bad idea as most competitive players just would stick to melee so they decided to disregard them.

The reason Snake became a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is because Hideo Kojima had originally requested Snake to be in Melee, but didn't make the cut due to time constraints.
On the other side of the spectrum, Sonic got added to Brawl very late into development which is why he's literally only at the end of the subspace emissary I assume because the rest of the story had already been written so it was the only place they could insert him. lol.

I definitely agree with you, that's like my favourite fighting game of all time.
Thanks for the history lesson

TwisterSanity I was disappointed Dr Mario was my guy
Tripping was a response to the competitive metagame of Melee meant to prevent the excessive wavedashing that so polarized the character tier list.
Unfortunately, making tripping random put unreasonable emphasis on camping and air game, which itself polarized the metagame (albeit to a lesser extent).

yeah, MvC:I was also big in the competitive scene for a while, but like brawl, it was dropped, while melee is still there.
Smash was never made for hardcore gamers first, the hardcore fans are a very small portion of the fanbase.

Overall i'd give World of light a 6/10
Ending of wol is very anticlimactic
You didn’t beat Pauline
Totally agree my dude.
@Maya Amano I play all of the Smash Bros quite frequently, actually.
Yeah it’s news to me.
I used to play that game so much with my stepbrother. I loved every second of it.
Yeah, for the time he had to make this game this is beyond my vocabulary
no but you need to understand that he had 7 years to make it and yes he had to be forced to make it but if he really wanted to take his time and stuff then he could have denied still a good game tho
He wasn't FORCED. Iwata asked him to make one, and Sakurai obliged. He could've said no, he just felt compelled to helm ths project.
I think Brawl handled the adventure mode better. It had CUSTOM levels exclusive to that mode, an ACTUAL story, AND it introduced guest characters and final smashes! It's not the best, but it's better ANY fan gives it credit for!
And the scenes were so good
Melee and Brawl both handled adventure mode far better than the trainwreck that is World of Light.

I loved Super Smash Brawl for what it was, played all day with my friends and the soundtracks were amazing. If you focus only on the problems of a games, EVERY GAMES WILL BE CRITICIZED. I loved it, and I love Ultimate even more 🤟🏼
Two Words: Subspace Emissary.
Two words: Adventure Mode
Three words: ultimate’s disappointing story
@@benkenobi8328 It's not really much of a story mode. It's more of an adventure mode tbh. And sakurai even said it was for fun. It's nothing like subspace.

I thought it was great, one of the best games to ever come out on the Wii. I never had the pleasure of playing Melee or the original 64 as those were far before my time and this was the first ever Smash Bros game that I ever played. So I loved this game
Scott:"There really letting anybody br a Smash Brother aren't they"
Steve :"Pretty much"
??? The most sold game of all time, and the main character for smash is not surprising. We were all waiting for it. He isn't some nobody, even I would agree with your statement if Shovel Knight got in. But Steve we were all waiting for.
@@airplane6417 we should rather talk about the bajillions of Fire Emblem characters...
@@chl_ca yeah, now thats rediculous.
It was almost guaranteed to happen sooner or later, with Microsoft getting closer with Japan, Minecraft being the best selling game ever, with Steve being the mascot, if anything it would be rediculous to say it wasn't gonna happen
I read this as they said it
I’ve never spent more hours on a Smash Bros game than Brawl, yet when I heard all the negativity surrounding brawl, I got some reason instantly succumbed to peer pressure and said it was the worst smash game.
thebahooplamaster He did exist, he was in the episode where Batman, WW, and GL traveled back in time.
thebahooplamaster Fucking idiot
I like the controllers
I think the real worst one is the original, but only because it was so simple. I didn't like brawl, but i can see it appealing to casuals a lot, and melee heavily appeals to competitive people. The most balanced one is smash 4, but that makes sense since they could update that one
Derek Morales well smash ultimate seems to be bringing back everything so maybe you'll find a new favorite
As a kid I liked brawl. But now I love brawl.
I used to hate playing it with my friend but now I go out of my way making sure we play it.
Dylan Frey lmao I had the exact same experience, my babysitters nephew had brawl, was way better at it than me, and was an asshole. I HATED the game
Yeah simply cause it's my childhood and everyone complaining about the game, insults the time I spend with the game. I get triggered so fast if people say this is shit. (I'm waiting :) )
Gentlemen, I like brawl.
Always loved for me
This was the first smash bros game I played as a kid and I freaking loved it!
That’s so fire, one of my first game experiences was also Brawl, and man that story mode was so magical to me.
Brave TH-camr: This game everyone hates is good.
Comments: Yeah.
Brave TH-camr: Wait, really? Oh wow, wasn't expecting a kind response.
You couldn't ban / block anyone who did taunt parties either, so they eventually took over.
he spent the entire video saying how the game had so much shit that wasnt good and then just concluded with a "but yeah the game was great i liked it"
@@bruceU So in other words it's a good but flawed game?
Usagi Jojo just because people liked it doesn’t mean it’s through rose tinted glasses. I remember enjoying it very much. This video acknowledges what people might not like about it but that has nothing to do with how enjoyable it is to everyone. Frankly, I don’t care about most of the things people don’t like. It was fun and immersive for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I hate that so many people look at the competetive aspect of the game, and don't look at all the content that was added.
Casual=Fun imo
About six months ago I discovered Knight Squad. A really good party game that I recommend to everyone and that I play when there's a lot of people over. Modded smash bros is a great one too. Everybody loves Osama Bin Laden vs Oreo Cookie vs deadpool vs Goku.
@@ivansoto9723 ikr
@@ivansoto9723 What you said is not totally true. Do you think smash bros melee would still be played if it weren't competitive? There is a huge group live for competitive games. Smash bros Melee would have died nearly 15 years ago if there was a competitive scene. Just look at brawl now, that game is dead.
Well Nintendo thought the same way. They felt trying to make it competitive would be a bad idea as most competitive players just would stick to melee so they decided to disregard them.
I enjoyed all the added content, but the bad movement, fluidity and mechanics definitely put me off playing it more.
Brawl is the game that got me into smash

@@shadow4040 In my opinion, Brawl had the best art style in the series....I know it may seem like a hot take, but it just has this feel to it that feels more....I can't really explain...more powerful?? An example would be when I play mario and just press a 3 times and he does that punch punch kick thing, theres just something about it that feels more like a fight I guess?
