@@Gigadweeb I'm sorry but DBZ BT3 is severely over-rated. People love to talk about how massive the character roster is but it loses a lot of meaning when you realize just how much animations are recycled and how everyone has at least 1 super move that the majority of the roster has. On top of that; The story was a big letdown coming off of the previous entry, they cut out WAY too much, it may as well have pulled a DB RB2 and not had one at all. Meanwhile; DBFZ has a roster of 40+ and pretty much everyone has their own moveset. Even the multiple Goku's have plenty of tools to call their own. And sure maybe the story wasn't that good but at least it was new and not recycled the manga for the 50 millionth time. Honestly, DBFZ is probably 1 of the most faithful video games to the franchise.
Some of my favourite games are 2d indie games made by only a couple of people. They tend to have more passion, creativity and value than any big EA or ubisoft game
Depends how you look at it, 2D fighters are doing very well recently, but they fell really far out of favour with the mainstream at around the late 90s until Street Fighter IV in 2009. I’m not kidding when I say some people didn’t even know there was a Street Fighter III beforehand.
As someone who runs 2D-exclusive gaming websites, I've had this conversation a lot over the years, and you nailed it in this video. 2D gaming went from ubiquity to handhelds, to indie games, to its modern renaissance. The 2D gaming resurgence over the past decade has been wonderful!
I think that's where the scorn of fully priced 2d games comes from. We've all gotten used to it making its home on handheld or indies, which are always cheaper than console games made by big studios.
@@anothergamer112 Fortunately, indie developers have stopped their "race to the bottom" in terms of pricing, and have realized that people will pay more for quality games. @@anothergamer112 Absolutely! 17:34 I think another important reason why so much 2D stopped cutting it was that the casual audience doesn't give you much longevity. There is really no brand loyalty or investment in the medium. Grandma is usually content with buying a single 2D Mario game and calling it a day.

Well, the gap between Mario World and NSMB was 14-16 years, depending on which launch date you take. It might have taken Metroid 19 years from Fusion to Dread, but if we consider the remakes (which were basically new games as well, being so different from the original), the gap between Zero Mission and Samus Returns is "only" 12 years. :D The question is, how will 2D Mario continue next? It's been already 9 years since NSMBU and I can't imagine them doing another one of those. There is Mario Maker of course, but that's not the same as a complete new game made by Nintendo themselves. I hope they re-invent 2D Mario, because the NSMB games were just wayyy too similar.
@@Ray_2112 I think Mario Maker alone is worthy of continuing 2D Mario personally. Even just the story mode for Mario Maker 2 was interesting. That said, NSMB, Mario Maker and 3D Land/3D World could all be considered ‘continuations’ of 2D Mario depending on who you ask, so it’s really hard to say what Nintendo’s long term plans are. Because it’s been so long since an original NSMB game however, having one now might be received better. I think NSMB DS and Wii at least were different enough from each other, but 2 and U were certainly mismanaged.

Quake 1 came out a day earlier than Mario 64 and yet Mario 64 steals the limelight for the grandfather of 3D gaming. Descent 2 also had a head start. I wonder if it was due to the 3rd person perspective of Mario 64? More open world? Quake had a hub similar to the Princess' castle. Anyway, I just find it interesting.
It might have something to do with Mario 64 selling over twice as many copies. A lot more people probably had their first true 3D experience with Mario 64, so it got the credit. Not exactly fair, but hey, that's life.
Super Mario 64 had soooo many refinements with gameplay that benefited all 3rd person 3D games, while Quake was more of a technology showcase on top of (mostly) existing FPS gameplay. And I agree that Descent was very underrated, but the 6DOF shooter genre just didn't take off. When people talk about games, it's usually less about under-the-hood technology like Doom's BSP rendering engine, Quake's precalculated lights, and its ability to run on a 486. Instead, it's more talk about things that are immediately fun / noticeable, like the analog stick, Mario's movement, etc. IMO it's more appropriate to give more praise to Doom for being the grandfather of FPS gaming than Quake. In fact, I personally think Doom is a much better game than Quake, a sentiment that I often see online. Not to say that Quake didn't have any gameplay refinements, but going from Doom -> Quake was a much smaller gap gameplay-wise than going from any 3rd person 3D game -> Mario 64.
I think it's a matter of influence. Quake was monumental to the PC world as SM64 was to consoles, but if you look at most 3D games today I feel like you'd have an easier time tracing Mario's DNA to them than Quake's. Most big FPS games these days are military shooters or like, battle royales were people are jumping and building and platforming, and I dunno if I feel that strong a kinship with them and Quake. CoD kinda stole the crown? But Assassin's Creed, platformers, 3D action games who were inspired by SM64's camera... sometimes you're first in, but that doesn't make you the baby's daddy, you know? Also Descent? Really? Even the most annoying of PCMR-sheep barely remember Descent. Point me to a Descent-like produced in like the latest ten years that's NOT some obscure indie game made by a superdedicated fan and who's sold like less than 10K copies, that game lent it's DNA to NOBODY.
I mean its about impact not strictly chronology. Even if other games did 3D earlier and at times arguably better for their genre, it's undeniable how much of a benchmark M64 is and was, it and Ocarina are absolutely the games who became the standard not just qualitatively but by sheer reach.
I love how 2D has been revitalized to such an extent. There’s this creativeness to making a 2D game in recent years, how they have been polished tirelessly and now, in the right hands, it just clicks into place and you get instantly hooked in this feel-good ride that you know is gonna be special from start to finish. Last time I had this was with Kirby Planet Robobot and I cherish that experience greatly.
I actually think the comparison of 2D and 3D games to Black & White and Color film is really interesting, because similarly to 2D games, you have B&W films released in the color era like Schindler’s List, The Man Who Wasn’t There, and Eraserhead, all of which fundamentally would not work in full color
There’s another Lynch classic you left out of this list that was also B&W: The Elephant Man Any “beauty” in that film I feel would’ve been ruined had it been filmed in color

I agree. My brother asked me just earlier today which I liked better between Hollow Knight and Bloodborne. I had to say Hollow Knight, because of the how much more polished it was (I absolutely love both games, tho)
That extra axis opens up a lot more possiblity for player unpredictability to go wrong for sure. In order for a 2d game to have as much opportunity for kinks in the system as most 3D ones it either needs to be very complex (like say Isaac) or simply not be handled with much care.
Definitely one of my favourite episodes in a while, I especially like that Moonshine joke but there's plenty of other great moments all the way through. One of your best IMO.
On "true" 4D gaming: there's _Miegakure,_ an as-yet-unreleased game with four spatial dimensions. It's a bit of a mind-bender to work with (try imagining how a 2D creature would see us!)
Hey Scott, the video output rate and quality recently has been really great, and I just wanted to show my appreciation for all the work you've been putting in this year. Thanks for the great content, as always!
I mean, if it's like Samus Returns, it probably isn't; Samus Returns was good but it was clearly worse than the other post-GB 2D Metroids, with the melee slowing basic combat to a crawl, and it wasn't exactly very long. I certainly would not pay 60 bucks for a game that primarily seems to be a sequel to it; I kind of regret paying 40 for it and wish I had waited a bit. Note that I have no similar regrets about, say, Fusion, a game I've played through like a dozen times and even managed to get the best ending in, as opposed to about one full playthroughs of Samus Returns and one "this game is more boring than I remember" playthrough that lasted an hour at most. Besides, Dread only costs that much because it's a Switch game and that's the default price point for first party Switch games, not because it deserves it more; Pokemon got much worse overall from 3DS to Switch and it went from 40 to 60 , the Link's Awakening remake was a polished up GB game and it got to be 60, and going from Samus Returns to Dread seems to be the exact same thing to me, the console is the reason for it, not the genre.
@@hoodedman6579 Good news for you, they apparently took the criticisms about the melee counter slowing down combat to heart and made it much more fast-paced. You can now hit an enemy while running and don't have to wait for them to flash in order to counter. They specifically emphasized this in the marketing, so apparently they knew it was a problem.
You know what i really love about this video and Scott's comedy in general? The beautiful simplicity of the family reunion joke. You have the setup in the beginning, the reinforcement in the middle (Dad, pay attention), and the payoff at the end. Just S tier writing right there

Then for a while, it really felt like 3D dominated, and I was surprised and pretty happy to see 2D return from the indie scene, and then from everyone else. At first I felt the 2D revival was fuelled by mainly nostalgia, but there were a lot of titles that felt new and fresh, and it's good to see it's here to stay.

I mean I get his point, Mania is 20 dollars and a love letter to the series that gets platforming right while Forces is double the price and is infinitley worse in every way below mediocrity. For christ sakes Hollow Knight is 15 while Fifa is 60/70, I'd say Mania and HK are more than worthy to be at least 30 and should be slightly more Liberal/confident with their pricing while we should make it so new 3D games aren't automatically expensive. We need pricing to be more accurate to value to some form of extent, I'm not going to complain games like Terraria are 10 bucks but it's certainly an overly generous price.
He wants 2D and 3D games to be priced equal. They technically could also lower the prices of 3D games to the level of 2D games. ... Not that any publisher would ever do that, so yeah, leaving only the other possibility.
I remember reading a 2003 Nintendo Power issue where they covered Viewtiful Joe for GameCube. The preview hyped up how it was a 2D game on the console. I feel that was the primordial return to roots before we started getting New Super Mario Bros. and 2D gaming on consoles.
"The Graphics look too old! I want NEW NEW NEW!" God I hate people like that. People held that opinion that 2d sprites shouldn't exist back then, and still today. WHY? Why do people hate sprites so much?
The irony is that people lament the death of 2D animated films, but for video games it's somehow different. Admittedly, 2D animated films have perspective and varying camera angles, whereas 2D games don't, or at least are limited in that regard. But just because it's more technically impressive doesn't mean it looks better.
The best looking Metroid titles are Fusion and Zero Mission. Shake It might be the best looking 2d game Nintendo has put out yet, although I think indies have definitely overtaken it - Hollow Knight in particular although I know some would pick Cuphead instead. I just fundamentally seem to prefer the aesthetics of high bit sprites to polygons all things being equal - And I say this as someone who likes the art style of Link's Awakening... I'd still prefer if it were 2d graphics. ...At least it looks like they're doing something a bit cinematic with Dread from the trailers in how they're transitioning between cutscenes and gameplay, but... Gods imagine Fusion in HD rather than 240x160 with modern 2d graphics rather than 32 bit ones and how gorgeous Nightmare's melting face would look like that...
It's elitism and snobbery, really. Same reason people say combustion engines are archaic and blah blah. @@kumabear5229 I came to that gen relatively late meaning I played the PS1 FF games out of order. This is interesting and something I've noticed that carries on today. Something I've noticed is the social aspect updates have had on gamers. Cutscenes aren't fluff. I don't understand people's vendetta against cutscenes. They're respite from the gameplay, they're an opportunity to tether you to the story and characters, it's an opportunity to bring focus on the story and characters by developing them in the spotlight, it's an opportunity to do interesting things that can't be done in gameplay, and much much more. If you played the game already sure by all means skip em you've seen em before they've done their job but don't sit there and disrespectful them the first time through.
Honestly, yeah, that's how I feel. I think the rule should be that you give all cutscenes a fair shake at least the first time through a game. And hell, depending on the game, you might be GLAD you ended up at a cutscene so your stress is temporarily alleviated.
@@arielglr7177 I get it. Your not big on games that emphasize story, no shame in that. But don't knock those that do. As someone who's shooting a movie for my rock band in black and white (except for a few short animated color sequences), this is definitely relatable. While most major studios stopped shooting films in black and white by 1966 (unless done for artistic reasons), the absence of color has it's advantages and since the late 90's, it seems like a lot of indie filmmakers are shooting films as such for similar reasons as me.
0:48 We actually do have a fourth dimension in gaming! Games like 4D miner, Miegakure, Hyper (2001) and that one 4D golf game are in true 4D. Granted, Miegakure and the golf game are in development, and 4D miner is in early access, they’re still there.
Love the point you make in this video. I was listening to a podcast earlier today where the host said Metroid Dread looks "cheap" because it's 2.5D. I'm just like... How???
I think 2.5D can often look cheap, though not always. Although 3D games are typically harder to program due to all the clipping issues, hitboxes, weird camera angles, model loading, and such, 3D graphics are easier than 2D, as rigging and animating a model is easier than manually drawing a frame-by-frame animation for every move, every enemy, every NPC. It's part of the reason Ori has hand-drawn 2D backgrounds (which are static) but 3D character models; it's cheaper. So by making a 2D game with 3D models, it can feel cheap, in a way. Now, Metroid Dread doesn't feel cheap at all in my opinion. The sheer amount of detail put into the environments and animations, and the inclusion of full 3D cutscenes makes it feel justified using 3D graphics. But for a game like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it just feels cheap compared to, say, Yoshi's Island, where 2D sprites were all hand-drawn and fit in with the backgrounds, all with a crayon-like art style. I still very much have a love of pure 2D games, though. One of the best games I've played visually is Hyper Light Drifter, which has no 3D graphics whatsoever. It uses a pixel art style, but it doesn't feel cheap like a lot of indie games that do. It has some of the most amazing animations I've ever seen. The minimalist art style, the atmosphere in the environments, and the fact that it still uses advanced graphical effects give it a very distinctive visual feel, which isn't just imitating the style of a SNES/Genesis game like so many cheap pixel art indie games.
3D graphics, models and whatnot, are cheaper to make than 2D graphics, simple as that; as a result, many 2.5D games look like they were made that way to avoid having to pay more for 2D graphics, which means that they look like crap because they're just taking the cheaper option to be cheap, and something doing that isn't going to take the time to make the style actually look good. This results in games like Mighty No. 9, which had great looking concept art but ultimately looked bad, though the decision to have voice acting combined with no facial movement exacerbated this. I primarily associate 2.5D with these kinds of games, so I tend to wary of the style as a whole; that being said, I thought Dread looked fine.
Living thru this was torture, once Nintendo realized that 2D platformers still had huge drawing power (like around the Wii U) is when things got better.

@@8BitHorse true. A college course I took taught me that people psychologically associate a higher price with better quality. Honestly, if Hollow Knight Silksong is 10 or so more than the original, I'd be more inclined to buy it since it would tell me it's a better and more polished product.

"There was a time where 2D Mario was basically extinct."
*Laughs in Metroid*
Well, the gap between Mario World and NSMB was 14-16 years, depending on which launch date you take. It might have taken Metroid 19 years from Fusion to Dread, but if we consider the remakes (which were basically new games as well, being so different from the original), the gap between Zero Mission and Samus Returns is "only" 12 years. :D
The question is, how will 2D Mario continue next?

@@scottsymonds5649 that and large amounts of people seem to ignore the existence of pc games generally when talking about stuff like this
Super Mario 64 had soooo many refinements with gameplay that benefited all 3rd person 3D games, while Quake was more of a technology showcase on top of (mostly) existing FPS gameplay.

Why do I get the feeling that he started writing this episode because people were saying that Dread isn't worth $60?
Sounds like something he would do. Dread seems quite promising. Not sure if it will be as good as Prime 2 or Other M, though.
Mayhaps

13:25 Super Mario 64? Now that’s something I can worship!
I remember my first genuine reaction to Super Mario 64, being one of not really ready for the transition to 3D, as I wanted more 2D Mario, lol.
This quality, this often is the youth. Avgn used to pump them out weekly too. Enjoy Scott. Enjoy him. They're putting an insane amount of work into this entertainment. Never take it for granted.

I love how one of Scott’s points in this video is that he WANTS to be charged more for 2D games
I don't; games don't need to cost more.
Yeah kinda short-sighted
@@hoodedman6579 console problems eh?
I remember reading a 2003 Nintendo Power issue where they covered Viewtiful Joe for GameCube. The preview hyped up how it was a 2D game on the console. I feel that was the primordial return to roots before we started getting New Super Mario Bros. and 2D gaming on consoles.
This was a very elaborate way of telling us to buy Metroid Dread 😋
And I have no problems with this whatsoever.

"The Graphics look too old! I want NEW NEW NEW!"
God I hate people like that.
In the latter case, the environment is just a convenient excuse to act like they're smarter and more forward-thinking than you.
It's something they really try to hammer into you in college; acting "smart."
@@kumabear5229 I came to that gen relatively late meaning I played the PS1 FF games out of order. I can't say for the actual release, but Final Fantasy 7's graphics - especially the character models used outside of battles - had not aged well by the release of Final Fantasy 9.
Generally, though, 3d stuff that's more heavily stylized - Paper Mario, The Windwaker, Jet Set Radio/Future, Gregory Horror Show - aged better graphically than stuff that was less heavily stylized.
@@andytheawesome7592 perfect take on the matter, bro. i think we should be more open towards stylized visuals are creative values in the industry.
As a massive computer games fan it’s so amazing to see the huge variety of games here. Thank you Scott
This is interesting and something I've noticed that carries on today.
Something I've noticed is the social aspect updates have had on gamers.
Now if your game can be updated, people expect more content out of games. Which indirectly makes developers hold content from release to fluff out the life span of the game.
Shooters probably have this the worst
@Matthew Roedl Fortnite's also a free game so that excuses most of it.

Yeah. I miss the days when consoles didn't connect to the internet and you got a complete game.
Remember when Nintendo released one 2D platformer game for the GameCube and then had a complete change of heart and released at least half a dozen 2D platformers for Wii and then continued to do it for Wii U and Switch? Those were certainly times.
By the way, that one 2D platformer Nintendo made for GameCube was Donkey Kong Jungle Beat if anyone didn’t know... I guess a big monkey playing bongos was the best Nintendo could do for the time.
Well of course it's monkey

There's nothing wrong with finding your own stopping point with Kingdom Hearts. Some people feel like 1 was the end. 2 was the end. Personally, for me, 3 is the end. I have played and thoroughly enjoyed every game from the start until now and I know where the series is headed. Whatever comes next cant keep me invested.

You see you'd be making a point if those games didn't had constant cutscenes for every 10 minutes of gameplay
idk man the fifth time i had to watch the cutscene of sonic riding the eggmobile to the death egg i was getting kinda annoyed
And gratuitous cuts scenes are not a new thing anyway, I recently played Metal Gear Solid for the first time, and as someone who loves Sony's AAA games, MGS nearly broke me and that game is over 20 years old. Different strokes, for different folks.
@@TyphonJRT Oh come on, those cutscenes are great though, and the voice acting, ESPECIALLY for the time, is atmospheric in quality

4:42 Putting the GCN on top of PS2. The shade 😂
Coming back to this video just after Mario Wonder started getting acclaim across the boards with many 9s and 10s...while at the same time so many are arguing against buying the game because it's not worth 60 bucks.
It is worth the 60 bucks
16:20 Something tells me this is going to be the perfect meme template.
20:22 I cannot express enough how much I agree with this point.
Love the point you make in this video. I was listening to a podcast earlier today where the host said Metroid Dread looks "cheap" because it's 2.5D. I'm just like... How???
@@scarffoxandfriends9401 Sorry, I meant Dread. I'll change it in my above comment.
