      When you are looking at the monitors in VR, is the signal leaving the network to an outside server or is the whole environment within the local network?

    Nobody talks enough about text legibility. I think this is a very important and common question, for new adopters that don't have hands on experience. Are we looking at displays that are 720p equivalent? 1080p equivalent?

    • @eltreum1
      @eltreum1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not easy to quantify. They are typically re-casted in their native res, but the res of your headset and how big you make the virtual screen determines its effective quality level. Oculus Quest 2 is where text is begins to be good enough to read text in documents ~2500x2500 per eye. There is a free open-source Linux app to make its desktop virtual and it's optimized for the best text rendering instead of 3d games support called SimulaVR, but its only compatible with SteamVR native headsets like Vive/Vive Pro and Valve Index so far.

      I totally agree with this question. I do understand that it is subjective.
      I am holding off with any purchase because I'd be so annoyed if I bought it, only to find that it isn't quite there in terms of text quality (like older headsets I've tried). I'll probably wait for the Cambria version.

      @@ChristoferB If you can spare the money and can wait till the end of the year, I'd suggest the Pimax Crystal or Pimax 12K. They will release with miniled technology and replacable lenzes, making it more durable in the long run and crystal clear image quality, thus reading in a document file will be even easier for your eyes.

    Are VR deviced known, that has not the pixel density issues ?

    • @eltreum1
      @eltreum1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The newest headsets coming are 5k HD equivalent. The Avarjo Aero has the highest density ~35PPD where things like Valve Index are around 15ppd and Quest 2 ~20 ppd IIRC. The Aero is 2k USD though, but there is no visible screen door effect.

    AR desktop is even better it would mean you won’t be cut off from real world. All you would need is a stylish AR Spec, it may even replace all your devices, phone, iPad, tablet, sat nav…etc

    • @SydneyButler
      @SydneyButler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, but the best AR glasses (not camera passthrough like Quest Pro) still have some way to go when it comes to field of view.

    • @FlockofSmeagles
      @FlockofSmeagles ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with AR as it stands is legibility. Viture and Nreal are near impossible to use for anything more than gaming and movies. As the lenses are focused strictly in center. Due to the nature of the OLED that they use. Which is a very small screen projected through a prism. It causes a lot dithering around your periphery. Once they are able to solve that issue. It's a hard one. Then, this will become a reality.

    SteamVR's desktop environment would be perfect if they put more effort into polishing it around the idea that it's a literal desktop replacement. I'm using it now with my quest 2 over link, and the oculus desktop disabled. Runs beautifully, but it doesn't produce virtual monitors. Instead, it mirrors your physical one's. Which is a huge issue that they could fix. I would throw away my current monitor setup in a fucking flash if they managed it.
