Idea of the metaverse comes from Snowcrash, which was a novel published in 1992, which was the first literary mention of a metaverse, and the first use of the word avatar in a novel to describe a character in virtual reality. The Metaverse in Snowcrash was created by a single corporation, and was built on top of network infrastructure built by the same corporation. Snowcrash was inspired by earlier cyberpunk fiction, such was that written by William Gibson, who was the first to use the terms "cyberspace" and "the matrix" to describe a virtual reality setting. Ready Player One simply ripped these ideas off.
Yes, but I think you underestimate the ability of the rulers of this society to make this lifestyle mandatory and brainwash everyone from a certain age level to normalize this as a society. All they need is a permanent lock down, and no in person socializing. Boom, instant dystopian nightmare.
@@mladenmladenovic3171 Unfortunately this is absolutely the only result of the current paradigm and trajectory of society. I already have nieces who at 4-5 were using an iPad 24/7. You could not possibly convince me that this generation has a single chance of rejection of the metaverse. Literally it is more satisfying, more functional, and more immersive than their actual lives, which essentially are spent mostly on social media and phones already. It is no surprise at all that this will become the cafe, bar, restaurant, theater etc for everyone under a certain age. They already have made it illegal to gather with their friends or travel in the largest nations on earth. They legally cannot socialize. How could this go any other way? With both lawmakers and police and technocrats all coming together to create their Orwellian brave new world. What other options do these people have when “work from home” is becoming legally mandatory, and you can get fined or arrested in some countries right now for going to a coffeshop, restaurant or bar?
Fall for... Brainwash... Everyone fears something new and most people distrust something new. Its in our genes to do so. How can people not see that this is a terrible idea? Humans escaping actual human interaction, locking themselves up in their rooms for days, and instead seek interaction with fake human avatars in a fake digital world? Somebody stop the planet please. I would like to get off here.
I don't think that's the idea here, the idea is alternative virtual meetings with virtual screens where others can work and interact together in a way which wouldn't be possible or easy otherwise. Besides this though, the resolution needs to be improved dramatically, including the technology itself to make gaming a more immersive reality. The technology is incredible in practice but still holds a large room for improvement, which consequently cannot replace console gaming or personal computer gaming in it's current state.
To follow up, nobody is playing this or using this for very long and if they are it's not to escape socializing or reality, that problem is not inherent of vr but anything that can be used too much and be of harm. Virtual reality sucks in my opinion for gaming but the practical use of it especially productivity with mixed reality is more of an interest to me.

@cj it 100% can be more dangerous . To be no more dangerous means there will be no different consequences to this. The immersiveness can have extreme psychological effects. At least with phones we can take pictures of the real world and our actual lives, and planning things we still have to physically go places to really hang out and go to shows. This will create an alternate reality that people enjoy and feel safe, all the time. They no longer need to leave the house as everything can be delivered nowadays. You can miss out on life by playing too many videogames, watching too many videos/movies, obsessing over other people's lives, or constantly reading a book, etc. It really just depends on the person's self-control.
I have a disability so being able to go dancing/hiking for hours through a headset would be both awesome and really sad. Like others said, it's more important to work to make this world better rather than make an entirely new world to escape reality.
@@remus4283 I personally think that we need to rework our building accommodations as well. Sometimes ramps take an extra 10 minutes to find because not even the staff know where it is. Some elevators are key locked so if you have an invisible disability or are in a new location you're stuck having the take the stairs anyway. Sometimes automatic door buttons (and braille placards) are BEHIND the door or in a weird enough position that you either get hit by the door or, when you finally get a wheelchair positioned to go through it, the door has started to shut again... Building accommodation laws are wonderful but sometimes it's obvious that the building designers did it to tick a box rather than actually make lives easier.
For certain disabilities it's easier than others. We can't, for instance, cure a paraplegic yet. The tech simply isn't there. Having the option to do more with VR can be incredibly empowering for them. Just as the Internet means they have opportunities to socialize that simply weren't there in the 1980s, for instance.
I’m glad to tell you that my daughter who had played internet games with her friends a whole lot in the past, now wants to read books and play volleyball. Her dad told her to use the Kindle, and she said she likes to flip through pages of a book instead!! Yay~~there is hope!!
Funny how this is exactly me lately :) Used to play videogames a lot but have been reading (I also prefer reading a physical book) and mountain biking for the past few months, and intend to keep doing so! Good for her 🙌🏼
Zucc smiles when he introduces the metaverse because he's like: "They gotta buy their whole wardrobe again for their avatars and more metaverse exclusive accessories!"
"you can do almost anything! Talk to friends, work, learn, play, shop". OMG so cool! But guys you're not gonna believe this I heard of an ever BETTER metaverse where interactions with people feel REAL, you can actually wear the clothes you buy, and the graphics are freaking amazing it's called REAL LIFE and you don't have to pay extra just to be in it and it doesn't give you a headache and make your eyes hurt.
Wow, the people involved in creating the metaverse definitely haven't thought of that. If you have friends overseas, would you rather fly there and back once a week to see them or hop in vr with them and play games or hang out as avatars? If you work from home sometimes it might be nicer to do work meetings or work in a virtual workplace, rather than over zoom. I would much rather play table tennis and box in vr than have to buy table tennis equipment or go to a boxing gym. The metaverse just makes stuff more accessible and easier for things that are impractical in the real world.
people already spent hours everyday playing video games or using some sort of social media or the internet in general the only difference between all this and vr is that it is more immersive

Very soon the same thing will happen with ideas such as this Metaverse nonsense, it will slip into the modern world unnoticed.
@Johann Pretorius it will be a thing when it’s more user friendly and connected to the real world. It’s basically using the internet just with an avatar. I guess it’s seems “cool” to dislike certain new technology until it becomes popular.

Welcome to the Metaverse, a black hole for your time here on Earth; it's so real that time lost in the Metaverse is lost in your real life.
Underrated comment!
If you really think about it, it's not that much different. Majority of the people just don't do that much exciting stuff in real life. We get one or two memorable moments a month and the rest of the time is just either working, maybe drinking or killing time in front of tv, pc or phone. This technology can make your uneventful free time feel much more exciting.
It's just that you find your life boring because you never dare to try anything new .. y'all just stuck in the same thing and then later on get bored .. I know my opinion is so vague but yeah .. we all headed into this way anyways sooner or later maybe we'll just wearing glasses with all round lcd and make different realities that suit ourselves .. can be a good or bad thing but who knows what happens ..
Thats a good point. What you build in one world has no value in the other. You could find yourself worth half as much because of that
