Reasons to buy this over the "next gen consoles" - Only 100 dollars more (But, with Steam sales, and no paid membership). - Small; more portable. - The CPU and ram are upgrade able. - Steam isn't always down due to Lizard Squad.
Sorry but this is a terrible thing to buy. If you want to get into PC gaming then buy a PC or learn how to build one. People buy consoles for their exclusives.
I have been a PC gamer and enthusiast since the mid 90's. I have a gaming rig which also doubles up as the machine I use for work and research. I figured I was the target demographic for a 'Steam machine' as I have a vast Steam library but don't always want to be sat away from my family and friends to play my games with a few beers, hence why I own many consoles. My rig is too large to move into the lounge and I would not want to anyhow as I have a specific work space. So I took the plunge and purchased the top-end i7 Alpha... a little more expensive but figured I would get a few years out of it if I upgrade to 32gb RAM (especially after reports Dell have coughed up a ton of cash to devs to 'dedicate' development on the Alpha like a console). I can report that I am somewhat impressed by the tiny (really is extremely small) little PC/Console. It squeezed into the smallest of spaces in among all my 8th gen consoles in front of the TV and runs extremely quietly (at least the i7 model does). I have been playing Dying Light maxed out on it this week (which Techland admit was optimised for Alpha although has been known to run poorly on more powerful gaming rigs), runs great, looks far superior to PS4 version and the game was £15 less expensive! This is typical on PC. I am no PC fanboy, I collect hardware, but the Alpha has, at least for the moment, put my PS4 and especially my XB1 in an awkward position. Cheaper, technically superior games, This is fine, and I notice the emphasis on raw power throughout the thread, but what really did it for me was the ability to play a vast catalogue of games (literally thousands) in my lounge to a proficient level without taking up space or moving my rig. For the price of a 'cheap as chips' keyboard and mouse you can play classics from years past all the way up to brand new AAA titles in a superior fashion to 8th gen. Something the 8th gen can not offer with lack of backward compatibility and high prices on PSN (for example) for older games. This machine isn't for everyone (solitary PC gamers and custom builders need not apply) but for those who fulfill the demographic, it is just fine. It is also worth noting that most gameplay vids on this 'review' is for the base model which only has 4gb RAM... upgrade the RAM or purchase a higher model (i5 or i7) and the difference between Alpha and 8th gen is much more stark. For me the name Alpha is very apt. The console itself is at that stage, being updated regularly, and the whole Steam machine or PC/Console hybrid market is still embryonic. Many PC manufacturers are now throwing their hats into the ring and this can only be a good thing, competition and diversity. I personally look forward to the advancement of this market and, hopefully, will mix it up a bit after a long-time stranglehold from the big 3.
really well done review, something that might've been worth mentioning though is that PCs are backward compatible with multiplat games from last gen (often at better detail, res and framerate standards) - something that the ps4 and xb1 have to work around with PlayStation now and nothing respectively, which might've added value for some potential buyers
DISCLAIMER: This is a huge post! These pros and cons are in comparison to the consoles, not extreme gaming desktops. Also, this is for the base model ($500), not the more expensive versions. Alpha pros: No membership required to play online and use apps CPU upgradeable RAM upgradeable HDD upgradeable to SSD (Xbox One can't, PS4 can) Steam Very small Every app you could ever want or need (Through Windows OS) Custom gamepad drivers allow you to use the controller as a mouse and keyboard when in Windows Extremely easy to take apart and replace components SteamOS is free and can install it when it is released Can be a used as a fully functional computer Gaming performance is on-par with PS4 and Xbox One, often able to play games in higher settings Quiet, even when gaming (I know for a fact the Xbox One is not quiet, cannot compare to PS4) Can play any game, no matter when it was released (PC also has biggest game library of all gaming systems) Alpha cons: More expensive (negligible when considering the need for membership payments and Steam sales) So far no apps are available when in Alienware's custom UI (Valve is working to have a bunch of apps available when SteamOS comes out) No optical drive (cheap and easy fix is to buy a USB powered external optical drive) People who should consider the system: You want an HTPC that can play games You want a computer that draws little power You're a console gamer looking to get into the world of PC gaming You want a cheap PC that can play games well People who should not consider it: Elitist assholes who think the only hardware/systems worth purchasing/building are able to play every game out today and for the next couple years at FHD 60+ FPS and max settings, then shit on everyone and everything else. You do not want an HTPC/console device and would rather have a desktop You are a "haterboy" of Alienware You already have a console and/or would rather get a desktop/laptop for PC gaming You plan to have this system for a very long time and want the ability to upgrade your graphics card I'm sure there are more cons to list, I just can't think of any right now. The Alpha was made to compete with consoles, not high-end gaming computers, so I don't understand why people think their gaming machines that cost several hundreds of dollars more, are relevant to any console. If someone wanted to spend that much money solely on a gaming machine, they most likely would not be looking at the PS4, Xbox One, or Alpha. Just a little background. I've been gaming on both consoles and the computer for nearly a decade. I've owned and/or used extensively, everything that has been out since the Nintendo 64 days. I've also been around many custom built computers and keep up with the new hardware and prices. And I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that you cannot build something exactly like the Alpha and make it more powerful, for two reasons. 1: It is only 7.8"x7.8", Alienware conducted extensive modding and testing and has a custom GPU to make this work. You simply will not be able to recreate a computer this small with this much power. You either wouldn't be able to fit the components in the case, or it would overheat. 2: Even if you use a bigger HTPC case, parts will most likely cost somewhere around the ballpark of $400-450 (don't forget your Xbox controller, or mouse and keyboard if you would prefer). Add on another $100 or so for a Windows operating system and you are over $500 (unless you got some crazy good deals on your parts). So if you would like to forego WIndows, you can build yourself a slightly cheaper computer, but keep in mind, you will not be able to play as many games. Another thing to keep in mind. Alienware constantly has coupons to lower the price of the Alpha even further. Right now there is a coupon on their website (directly on the Alpha page) for another $50 off. That makes it a $450 system. Also, Alienware/Dell has long been known for their ability to haggle with. If you call them up on the phone and do a little negotiating, you WILL get an Alpha for under the current $500 price tag (they might even throw in a tablet), even without a coupon. Its really easy, too. You don't have to be good at it, just let them know you don't want to spend that much and they'll do what they can to sell it to you. Sorry to write so much. I just wanted to help people make a more informed decision.
can i use one hdmi for my xbox and the other hdmi for the pc as a dual monitor set up so i can livestream using obs on the pc screen with 1 hdmi using and play xbox on the other screen using the 2nd hdmi
I don't have one of these but I do have the zotac en760. which has basically the same specs as the high end version of the alienware alpha. I love it. It's really easy to carry around and plug into other devices ( although you can also just plug a laptop into an HDTV and stream from the pc to the TV). The performance is on par with these generation consoles, it's discrete and when you consider that it can replace a pc as well as a console, the 100 bucks extra isn't that big of a deal. The big kicker they don't mention is that you can't replace the video card because it's soldered in. But they are coming out and have already developed devices that will allow for external video cars to be attached. For the right person at the right time this could be a fantastic device
This is a Gaming PC. Not a console but, has the size of a console. It's way better than a PS4 or Xbox One. Xbox One has some things I love that the console features but, this still beats those two. Wii U and a Gaming Rig PC is all you'll ever need. I wonder how much would it cost for a tower PC to run like the Alpha cause later on would be useful to add a TV tuner. Like all my stuff in one place. Talk about Xbox One all you want but, later on TV's will house gaming laptop tech. Already adding computers to cars and cell phones gaming tech advancing.
Have you been listening it barely keeps up with the console yea you can upgrade it but your better of getting an actual desktop it fails you say it blows them away smh
Wow two letter PC makes it better..I haven't met a pc gamer that truly made a case for PC.all I here is I got $5000 pc I got this I got that and my understanding is PC gamers willing to buy any damn thing
Curt man at what time stamps did they say it barely keeps up with consoles? Every snippet I saw was showing side by sides has this crappy AW pc surpassing 30 frames per second. Mostly hitting between 45-55. 30 frames is what the consoles run all the games demo'd. The reality is even this shitty PC is better then the consoles. Not even going to go in to expand-ability or overall utility of a pc vs console.
I want to get this really just for minecraft, skyrim (1080p??), movies, recording xbox, and just as a normal pc. Do you think the default version would be fine? I love the portability and how its like a console (grew up playing xbox) and would play games like cod, etc on an xbox (id rather play on it because i could play with friends). Would this work for me.
You can buy a better desktop PC for this then $500 that is fully upgradable. The GPU is outdated the fastest, so that being the part you can't replace kinda makes this really silly to buy... Unless you have neither a PC or a gaming console and need both on a budget. Even still, you are better off droping $500 into a typical desktop. Unless you have severe hip problems and cant sit down while playing video games.... lol
Not necessarily. PC exclusives heavily outweigh console exclusives. I might get this because I'm too stupid to build a PC and I don't have the time for it. And Steam sales, OOOOOOHHHH.
Damion Dixon building a pc isnt hard at all, and doesnt take long. I build my first pc 1 month ago and it was really easy and done whitin 2 hours.it was just 20 euro more then the alienware alpha and has MUCH better performance.
Roy Swinkels As someone in the tech industry for 15 years, I forget that most people simply don't understand computers. Telling some people they should upgrade their RAM, or edit an .ini file before launch can make them feel completely overwhelmed. I know people who have been PC gamers for nearly a decade, and they still have other people build/upgrade their systems. I think it's weird too, but it doesn't change the fact.
***** Laptops are very very good, though more expensive than desktops. For a lot of people the portability is well worth the extra cost. Also AMD CPUs are less efficient which is a high priority factor in such a small system with restricted cooling capability.
Well you don't need a tower, something like the x51 is roughly Xbox1 sized. The Alpha is seriously fucking tiny, but if you just need a console sized PC there are some options. The X51 can take a GTX970, unfortunately you can't buy it with one and all the graphics options suck so it becomes expensive to buy it then upgrade. Asus do a ROG G20 which is similar but again not cheap. There are some third party cases but they are pretty ugly. Silverstone probably do the bet cases if you are building your own.
People say you're better off getting a desktop PC. I don't want a desktop PC. I like how small the Alienware Alpha is. Plus I have a Mac laptop that I've had for a while, so it's not really about needing it for computer issues. If I bump up the RAM to make it run faster and smoother, maybe a few other things here and there, then whats wrong with that?
so would this console be able to work 100% if I don't have a computer? like would certain functions be inaccessible or like would I be able to download games from steam go online etc? and is there a wifi adapter*
RIPTHEJACKERx I have a alien ware 18, ps4 (white), xbox one (white), and also a alien ware alpha.....I will wait for the next nintendo console I was not impressed with the wii u in terms of service....
I also have all the systems :D plus a bunch of older systems, you can't beat the classics. but for me the Xbox One was a waste, because there is near no support for it in South Africa. But hey games are games and that's what we enjoy.
I have an alienware m14x r2 and I paid 1350euros for it, But now the gt650m graphic card is not good enough anymore. What should I do? i've been searching for an external graphic card but that's hard to find. I'm thinking about spending 300dollars. what should I do?
I'll take the Alienware Alpha over the PS4 and Xbox One anyday. It has the user friendly nature of a console combined with the freedom and flexibility of a PC. However, at the same time, I would *not* use this as my main gaming PC. Building a PC is still a better bang for your buck. Plus with all the fighting games coming to Steam, and since fighting games are not very demanding, this would be perfect for tournaments and taking with you to friends' houses.
"Manage your expectations accordingly, and you wont be disappointed with the Alienware Alpha." This statement is true or anything. 'Set your expectations low enough, and you will not be disappointed.'
Very cool and such but what if I'm more into playing DotA? How can I do that? And is there a specife controller or do you have to connect a ps3/4 or xbox, maybe a different gamepad on it?
Thank you so much for this review! I want a fairly good gaming machine and I'm a budget. This review was amazing and I'm gonna buy it. Thanks you so much!!!!
Just picked a refurb on Newegg not really knowing much. Thought $400 was a steal for an Aleinware console. After watching your review I'm super stoked! Good Vid Thanks
yes but u need a good upload speed go to speedtest.net and find out what your upload speed and go find a video or guide that goes well with your upload speed
My biggest issue with the Alpha, and PC gaming in general, is that I'm pretty computer illiterate for my age group. It seems like any computer I touch gets a terrible virus and starts working like garbage, and there are so many options on how to fix each issue, most of which that don't work, that it can be overwhelming. I might wait until I've taken some computer tech classes in college before I invest. Otherwise, I'd love to use the Alpha for PC exclusives and indie titles, with my PS4 (possibly trading in for a XB1) for games available on consoles. I'll let the Alpha run its course for a year or so and see how things play out, but this is great for console gamers who are interested in PC gaming.
E. Trafford There is a learning curve I admit with PC gaming, but if you have some patience at the beginning and willingness to learn, it can be incredibly rewarding including saving you money over the long term.
hansrob001 I'm surprised at the saving money bit. I guess can see it. I'm not sure I'm up for devoting so much time to learning, though. It's not so much that I'm impatient, but that even when I've succeeded, I'd just feel shitty for spending all that time preparing to waste more time, y'know?
E. Trafford Then a console might be for you then. It really doesn't require much time, but if you want that plug and play experience at a 100% level, where as a pc might only be 90%, then a ps4 might not be a bad purchase. I enjoy pc gaming more because you are not stuck on one market place, options galore, more games, extreme backwards compatibility, no online fees, able to do pretty much everything on a computer, among others. But again, Over the months I have been gaming on a pc, then occasionally I might have to use google to help me trouble shoot a problem. Download software to get a controller to work, perhaps someother things. It happens
E. Trafford You should install Avast free anti virus software to ensure you don't pick up viruses. Also if you don't know why you are making your PC run worse I believe it's the registry files, anyway, you can just use your PC for gaming and that means if you only have Steam and other gaming software installed you won't run into issues. If you really want to enjoy gaming on PC you should ignore all the other things you can do on PC and just use it to play games on Steam and that way you don't need to do much else.
+No Name I have a Macbook pro that I've had for a while, so I won't need to use the Alienware alpha for going on the internet. So does that mean I won't have to worry about viruses? Now I'm just a little concerned because I sold my PS4. I want to be able to play the cool PC games, plus all the old school games that would be available for me to play is a bonus for me. And if I start using Twitch again, I heard you can accomplish more with a PC in terms of overlays, and other things to improve the stream.
So say I wanted to play wow or lol or any other mmo would you be able to play it on this or would you need a seperate desktop for that or would it be able to run on the alpha
Just got the Alienware Alpha R2 with i7 6700 processors and The Alienware AMP. This thing is a beast! They need to come back review the R2 version of the Alpha. A lot has changed. They are using desk top graphic cards instead on the Nvidia M version from the laptop line.
So basically it's a small gaming PC. Can this also play game mods like the Street fighter 4 reskins or the GTA5 mods. Also, can you use any controller you want? (ps3/4,X360).
+David James It's a Windows PC so yes, it will do all and anything any other gaming PC can do. The only differences are in graphics power, just like all the other varied gaming PCs.
"Manage your expectations accordingly, and you won't be disappointed..." That's kind of how expectations work. Thanks for the tip. Now, every product I buy is awesome.
There is no market for an Alpha. It doesn't have the raw power or upgrade-ability that a PC has. And it doesn't have the big console exclusives. It has tried to merge PC and console, and by doing so has lost the best aspects of both. The only thing this has going for it, it access to Steam sales.
I like it but i have an XB1 and a laptop so it's largely worthless too me, maybe if i have a cash overflow i might consider getting one so i can actually play my PC games properly
I have a quick question for everyone and if it could be answered as soon as possible it would be much appreciated. So I already have an Xbox one, but I am re doing my room and I may need a desktop computer for my new desk eventually. Is it worth saving up for the maxed out Alienware alpha for a desktop computer and a gaming PC or to try and tackle building my own gaming PC for steam games and desktop use.
Easy to answer, NO it is not worth getting the maxed out alienware alpha. Get the base i3 model for $500 or less, and buy a 400+ gb SSD to use with it. Then you can invest that additional $400+ dollars in the stock market and if lucky it will have turned into $800 in 3+ years; then buy the alpha r3 or something else for $400-500. The base i3 alpha will perform nearly the same as the i7 model for games. The i3 $500 is a bargain and cannot be beaten for that price if your building a rig for yourself (assuming legit Win 8.1 OS + time, x360 controller, 6 games, etc..)
Sorry, I don't know if anyone can help me, I bought a second-hand Alienware Alpha R1 computer with an I3-4130T, I want to give it to my brother for when he goes to University, I wanted to change the CPU to an I7-4770, But when I put it on, the Alienware symbol appears yellow, that is, with a fault, first they told me that it is the BIOS, I updated it and it remained the same, after the new CPU is damaged but no, the one who sold it told me he used with his 2080, and later they told me that I need more power in the charger, I think mine is 130w, but I need at least one 180w or 240w, being honest I do not have or want to spend a lot of money, what could I do in My case ? I really appreciate it if you can help me or if you take the time to read me, sorry for the spelling, I don't know much English
I am seriously interested in this thing but I am worried about its longevity. I wouldn't want to be forced to upgrade after a couple of years to keep up optimally.
Well you are able to upgrade it so it will last as long as you keep it updated, but you will probably be able to run modern games on medium for quite a few years.
CodeMonkzey The upgrades that are available are very limited. In fact there is really no difference between the base i3 vs i7 model as far as game performance is concerned. Current video games are poorly threaded applications (or at least their threading is not optimized). My recommendation would be to buy the i3 base model for
Yablo Yoynk Good Point. I think I would be quite happy with medium settings. Medium settings in most modern games look relatively fantastic as they are. I think the biggest problem with medium settings is not how they look on there own, but the fact that when on medium, theres always a lingering feeling in the back of the mind that says "it could look better". Coming off of a gaming laptop that's obsolete now (and never ran well in the first place) I've been thinking about getting a new piece of gaming hardware. Coming from PC I don't want to be locked into a consoles ecosystem, but buying a new gaming desktop with decent specs always seemed too pricey too me. Even if I got the alpha now and in three or more years would have to play games on low for optimal performance, I would be okay with that. Just think how good low would even look in three years or so. Thanks for the help Yablo!
it's nice and all, but how long will it last (year or two) before you need to upgrade and even then you (mostly) will need to upgrade video card... that's intergrated. So you will just get stuck with soon to be a low end blinking pc that will struggle with games. In my opinion its bettter to get similar price laptop and enjoy portability or build your own FULL size PC.
Can I run the sims 4 on here??? I'm sorry I'm just curious cuz I got ripped off the last time and I will play other games on it but I just want to know for sure
The main reason people still buy consoles is for the exclusives! God of War, Uncharted, Mario games, Zelda, Bloodborne, Halo, Forza Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Super Smash Bro., Killzone, Ni No Kuni, Heavy Rain, Beyond two souls, and thousands and thousands more that you will not be able to play on the Alien Ware Alpha...ever...
I got this pc. Its impressive. They newest block buster games can tax it slightly. But slightly older games and MMO's Run surprisingly great. Guild wars 2 plays super smooth on ultra. Tf2 runs at 100+ frames. Runs skyrim at 60 frames. Its pretty much the best starter gaming pc you can get.
Game Head If out of the literally thousands of exclusives for PC you have found nothing interesting, then you would never buy one regardless of what it had.
but it doesn't take any place and it looks so awesome :O you can also just get a wireless gaming mouse & keyboard and switch sometimes between the controller and mouse & keyboard ;) but they did say you can upgrade the gpu, but you...well can't! because there's just a chip in it, of a gpu.. so how does that work?! but 4gb ram is not a lot for that price
IceLegend Well, this thing is a 100 times better than any crappy computer you'll buy at Best Buy. So it might be a good investment for those who wants to play PC games but don't know shit about them.
the alpha r2 i5 and i7 versions have gtx 960 4gb which give 60 to 80% more performance (the i3 version has r9 m470x which is equivalent to this one). The i5 and i7 version also have a special alienware graphic amplifier port. This port is an external GPU enclosure that allows you to put almost any graphic card in it and cost around 200$ (This port does not exist on alienware apha r1). Personally during black friday i bought an alienware steam machine on sale (i3 3.2 ghz, 8gb ram, 1 tb harddisk and 860m for around 300 USD) and i am planning to install windows 10 on it (my university gives is several free windows licenses) and use it an affordable gaming PC since my gaming laptop is begging to age (i7 4th gen 760m) So depending on your budject, I bought the 300$ steam machine because i tought it deserved that price. But if you have to pay 800$ for the alpha r2, i say it is not worth it (you can get a prebuilt desktop for cheaper).
Dark SouL You don't have to worry about graphics on PC, either. You can put them on low and medium and play at console settings, or you can soon play in 4k with 60fps on all ultra with the Oculus rift while issuing voice commands to your ship AI in Elite: Dangerous. If you are so lazy that you don't want to put in the tiny effort required to improve your experience by several orders of magnitude then be my guest, but don't walk around like you've got anything more than a 2/10 sitting under your TV.
this just kinda proves to me that there is no need for consoles as they exist today, you just need something powerful enough to play the game you want and maybe a controller friendly UI
Seems decent, only issue would be life cycle. It's competing with consoles which usually last 5,6 years, and devs usually get everything from that hardware. This , being a PC , won't really get same treatment.
Dominic Galante With its hands tied behind its back, blindfolded. Even highly modded (250 mods) I was getting a consistent 55-60 on max settings. If you are just getting it for minecraft, just build one yourself or look for something cheaper.
Reasons to buy this over the "next gen consoles"
- Only 100 dollars more (But, with Steam sales, and no paid membership).
- Small; more portable.
- The CPU and ram are upgrade able.
- Steam isn't always down due to Lizard Squad.
Also, I said over "next gen consoles". That doesn't mean this is better than building a pc on your own.
***** If you want to buy a prebuild, buy from iBuyPower or CyberPowerPC.. Even though they are owned by the same company.
***** to add on to the first comment.
Sorry but this is a terrible thing to buy. If you want to get into PC gaming then buy a PC or learn how to build one. People buy consoles for their exclusives.

can we insert disk? or it only play digital games?
whats the cartoon plane game at 1:25?

1:26 game?
A decent, modest & honest review. How refreshing.
I know right? Where's all the console killer fanboy baiting?
anyone know what the side scroller, shooter at 1:26 is?
So can I upgrade this freely just like a PC I've built myself? If I were to get one I would want it to be able to keep up for at least 6 or 7 years.
DISCLAIMER: This is a huge post!
These pros and cons are in comparison to the consoles, not extreme gaming desktops. Also, this is for the base model ($500), not the more expensive versions.
Alpha pros:
No membership required to play online and use apps
CPU upgradeable
RAM upgradeable
HDD upgradeable to SSD (Xbox One can't, PS4 can)
Steam
Very small
Every app you could ever want or need (Through Windows OS)
Custom gamepad drivers allow you to use the controller as a mouse and keyboard when in Windows
Extremely easy to take apart and replace components
SteamOS is free and can install it when it is released
Can be a used as a fully functional computer
Gaming performance is on-par with PS4 and Xbox One, often able to play games in higher settings
Quiet, even when gaming (I know for a fact the Xbox One is not quiet, cannot compare to PS4)
Can play any game, no matter when it was released (PC also has biggest game library of all gaming systems)
Alpha cons:
More expensive (negligible when considering the need for membership payments and Steam sales)
So far no apps are available when in Alienware's custom UI (Valve is working to have a bunch of apps available when SteamOS comes out)
No optical drive (cheap and easy fix is to buy a USB powered external optical drive)
People who should consider the system:
You want an HTPC that can play games
You want a computer that draws little power
You're a console gamer looking to get into the world of PC gaming
You want a cheap PC that can play games well
People who should not consider it:
Elitist assholes who think the only hardware/systems worth purchasing/building are able to play every game out today and for the next couple years at FHD 60+ FPS and max settings, then shit on everyone and everything else.
You do not want an HTPC/console device and would rather have a desktop
You are a "haterboy" of Alienware
You already have a console and/or would rather get a desktop/laptop for PC gaming
You plan to have this system for a very long time and want the ability to upgrade your graphics card
I'm sure there are more cons to list, I just can't think of any right now.
OMggggg. That sound in the intro made me go insane. Cut the high freq a little!! Thanks.
can i use one hdmi for my xbox and the other hdmi for the pc as a dual monitor set up so i can livestream using obs on the pc screen with 1 hdmi using and play xbox on the other screen using the 2nd hdmi
Which version of the alpha did they review when comparing?
How well could the Alpha play Civ 5? Could it handle big maps without any lag on decent settings?
For the right person at the right time this could be a fantastic device
not necessarily saying one copied the other but didn't this make you think of the mac mini especially from behind
Curt man
I didn't add the fact that it's a PC that makes it better than console.
Wii U? Are you fucking kidding, what are you?10.
Is steam pre-downloaded when you're in desktop mode?
Roy Swinkels Is it a laptop build? I wouldn't mind making a PC, but I don't want a desktop.
***** Laptops are very very good, though more expensive than desktops. For a lot of people the portability is well worth the extra cost. Also AMD CPUs are less efficient which is a high priority factor in such a small system with restricted cooling capability.
how do you connect mikrophones?
Right. Anyone know of a better build with a similar price? I kind of need something compact.
You wont get better but as compact. They engineered this thing well. You can get better but it will always be bigger.
MuthaBuffer Damn. And I don't have the space for a tower.
Can someone tell me if you can use a i5 8gb to play minecraft at 60 fps with mods?
Can you play emulators like PS3 PS2 Wii and GameCube? And how well?
does the pc/console have any headphone or microphone imports?
can you buy them at best buy?
Can I install mods? ?and *cough cough* "free" games?or only games from steam
Once you switched from your alienware alpha to your ps4 using the hdmi in port, can you switch back from your ps4 to the alpha?
yep
so would this console be able to work 100% if I don't have a computer? like would certain functions be inaccessible or like would I be able to download games from steam go online etc? and is there a wifi adapter*
Marc-Anthony Perez yes it’s like a PC but In a consoles shape
hello um can the cheapest model of the alienware alpha run the witcher 3 on medium, high or low graphics just wondering ☺
yep
can this be used with a mouse because I don't like using the controller
yes
I have a gaming pc, PS4, XB1, and WiiU. Fanboy peasants, bow down to the true master race.
Welcome to the present we don't do that shit anymore
***** I also have all.. bow down lol
But hey games are games and that's what we enjoy.
i just need a wii u and il be right there with you
The alpha has a max ram of 16gb right?
is it possible to add a usb blueray?
Is it possible to play games that are not on steam? I'm seriously considering buying this.
Is the alpha recommended for work? i will mainly use this machine for normal pc use? im looking for a mini pc with i5/i7 quadro core.
I'd downgrade to like a laptop for work tbh, this is for gaming and if youre only using it for work theres not reason to spend that much money for it
thank you for the very late answer. im conncted my laptop and im happy that i didnt buy this.
cyigen85 yup hah
This thing is an insanely good deal on Amazon. It actually hit below $400 making it a much better option than it was previously.
can you use a headset and mic with it?
Can play my games in 4K resolution with it?
I have an alienware m14x r2 and I paid 1350euros for it, But now the gt650m graphic card is not good enough anymore. What should I do? i've been searching for an external graphic card but that's hard to find. I'm thinking about spending 300dollars. what should I do?
don't think it will fit in my laptop, maybe if I change my motherboard but than it will cost a lot more. :(
Wat is tht game shown at 1.29??
I'll take the Alienware Alpha over the PS4 and Xbox One anyday. It has the user friendly nature of a console combined with the freedom and flexibility of a PC.
However, at the same time, I would *not* use this as my main gaming PC. Building a PC is still a better bang for your buck.
Plus with all the fighting games coming to Steam, and since fighting games are not very demanding, this would be perfect for tournaments and taking with you to friends' houses.
What game was shown at1:06?
Will it run Rainbow Six Siege (i3 processor with 4gb of ram?)
When does the complete version come out?
can I watch my Blu-ray movies and is the online service free?
I do not believe it even has a disc slot
At least the Alpha can go over 30 FPS, unlike the Shitstation.
I dont think people have realised that you can mod your games with the steam workshop on this...
I never got a controller whit my alpha?
I wish the PS4 and Xbox One would get a $100-$150 upgrade that allows us to replace the GPU with a GTX 970 or at least a 960.
Will usb headphones and usb microphones work on this?
yes
"Manage your expectations accordingly, and you wont be disappointed with the Alienware Alpha."
This statement is true or anything. 'Set your expectations low enough, and you will not be disappointed.'
is this more powerful than the ps4 and xbox one
Very cool and such but what if I'm more into playing DotA? How can I do that? And is there a specife controller or do you have to connect a ps3/4 or xbox, maybe a different gamepad on it?
You can use any controller available to PCs. That includes keyboards, mouse, x360 game pad, playstation gamepads. Logitech gamepads, etc.
I'm looking for a gaming computer should I get this one or keep on searching
build one yourself
I'm a noob and don't know how to do it will it cost more?
My friend knows a whole bunch of things about PC unlike me he tole me it costs less to build a pc.
Is it good for the game gmod?
Do you even need a monitor for this?
Nope, you can plug it into the TV with the HDMI cable.
Jesus can walk on water
Watermelons are 99% water
I can walk on watermelons
I am 99% Jesus
Why the fuck are you even here?
Would this computer be good for streaming on twitch?
yes but u need a good upload speed go to speedtest.net and find out what your upload speed and go find a video or guide that goes well with your upload speed
E. Trafford There is a learning curve I admit with PC gaming, but if you have some patience at the beginning and willingness to learn, it can be incredibly rewarding including saving you money over the long term.
hansrob001
I'm surprised at the saving money bit.
It's a PC, it has a desktop mode that will play any feasible PC game.
What's the game at 1:27?
whats the game name?i cant find it.pls help
abdurrahman akasyah Sine Mora is the game's name.
+American Muslim thanks.
Disc drive?
answered any questions i had. thank you so much
Just got the Alienware Alpha R2 with i7 6700 processors and The Alienware AMP. This thing is a beast! They need to come back review the R2 version of the Alpha. A lot has changed. They are using desk top graphic cards instead on the Nvidia M version from the laptop line.
Can u play all the games on steam like truck driving simulators and such?
can this connect to wifi
So basically it's a small gaming PC. Can this also play game mods like the Street fighter 4 reskins or the GTA5 mods. Also, can you use any controller you want? (ps3/4,X360).
+David James It's a Windows PC so yes, it will do all and anything any other gaming PC can do. The only differences are in graphics power, just like all the other varied gaming PCs.
yes you can use a controller.
Since this has steam, does that mean it can play PC games that aren't on Consoles like DayZ?
Yes it is just a small pc that runs windows, so basically a standard micro-atx pc
"Manage your expectations accordingly, and you won't be disappointed..."
That's kind of how expectations work. Thanks for the tip. Now, every product I buy is awesome.
Can this play games other than steam games? Like games only on ea origins or league of Legends or something?
AJ Pasion yes it's a windows based pc.
There is no market for an Alpha.
It doesn't have the raw power or upgrade-ability that a PC has. And it doesn't have the big console exclusives.
It has tried to merge PC and console, and by doing so has lost the best aspects of both. The only thing this has going for it, it access to Steam sales.
Honestly the only selling point with this is that you also get 2 exclusives masks and a reskin of the breaching tool melee weapon in Payday 2.
Is this only gaming and steam or can you go on the internet for mods n stuff?
+MNM GAMES It works like a desktop also
Jude Arcus Oh ok thx im buying this right now!
All I care about is can I get PC quality graphics on this thing? 1080p standard and upgradeable to 4k. I can sell both my XB1 and PS4 if yes!
Can you plug in an Xbox one controller and play games using it
It's come with a Xbox 360 controller
yep with the windows 10
The real question is how easy is it to mod skyrim on it?
Thanks for the help Yablo!
could i play old games like call of duty 2 on this thing? and if i downloaded fallout 3, could i mod that game?
Of course it's a PC!
oke nuff said i want something like this in a year or so
it's nice and all, but how long will it last (year or two) before you need to upgrade and even then you (mostly) will need to upgrade video card... that's intergrated.
So you will just get stuck with soon to be a low end blinking pc that will struggle with games.
In my opinion its bettter to get similar price laptop and enjoy portability or build your own FULL size PC.
you can literally buy these at Walmart, i saw a console in the display case with the PS3 for some reason
Can I run the sims 4 on here??? I'm sorry I'm just curious cuz I got ripped off the last time and I will play other games on it but I just want to know for sure
I would be extremely surprised if this could not handle Sims 4
this could for sure, if my shitty laptop can this beast lil thing can :)
sam herman Yes. The Sims 4 isn't even slightly demanding. A budgeted, competent person, can make a $150 DIY computer run the Sims 4.
So for 100$ more than my PS4, I'll get a PC that barely performs better than my console and has no exclusives that I'm interested in. I'll pass.
You know that's exactly how I feel about PS4...
Game Head If out of the literally thousands of exclusives for PC you have found nothing interesting, then you would never buy one regardless of what it had.
except I could build a $500 pc that would completely SMASH the ps4 in every way ?
Why is everyone getting so asshurt over one persons opinion?
because your opinion if fucking wrong? You can believe the earth is flat but you're still going to be fucking wrong.
Have this pc dvd drive?
No, it does have USB ports so you can buy an external drive and plug one in to use.
Buy a Pc if you Want one buy a console if you want one do not buy this.
but it doesn't take any place and it looks so awesome :O
you can also just get a wireless gaming mouse & keyboard and switch sometimes between the controller and mouse & keyboard ;)
but they did say you can upgrade the gpu, but you...well can't! because there's just a chip in it, of a gpu.. so how does that work?!
but 4gb ram is not a lot for that price
your better of building your own pc
IceLegend This box isnt made for people who want to build a pc.
fhgdngdfh If you want a console go buy one this thing has no relevance
IceLegend Well, this thing is a 100 times better than any crappy computer you'll buy at Best Buy. So it might be a good investment for those who wants to play PC games but don't know shit about them.
Should I get this or the alpha 2?
the alpha r2 i5 and i7 versions have gtx 960 4gb which give 60 to 80% more performance (the i3 version has r9 m470x which is equivalent to this one). The i5 and i7 version also have a special alienware graphic amplifier port. This port is an external GPU enclosure that allows you to put almost any graphic card in it and cost around 200$ (This port does not exist on alienware apha r1). Personally during black friday i bought an alienware steam machine on sale (i3 3.2 ghz, 8gb ram, 1 tb harddisk and 860m for around 300 USD) and i am planning to install windows 10 on it (my university gives is several free windows licenses) and use it an affordable gaming PC since my gaming laptop is begging to age (i7 4th gen 760m)
So depending on your budject, I bought the 300$ steam machine because i tought it deserved that price. But if you have to pay 800$ for the alpha r2, i say it is not worth it (you can get a prebuilt desktop for cheaper).
or , you can buy a console plug the game disc and have funn playing without worrying about graphics :)
Or, you can have a choice in how you play your games
Dark SouL You don't have to worry about graphics on PC, either. You can put them on low and medium and play at console settings, or you can soon play in 4k with 60fps on all ultra with the Oculus rift while issuing voice commands to your ship AI in Elite: Dangerous.
If you are so lazy that you don't want to put in the tiny effort required to improve your experience by several orders of magnitude then be my guest, but don't walk around like you've got anything more than a 2/10 sitting under your TV.
downloading games is slow i agree but UI is fast
Laser Kitten I would say that is your opinion, i respect your opinion, but I don't agree with it.
Laser Kitten I'd say you have a shitty opinion.
this just kinda proves to me that there is no need for consoles as they exist today, you just need something powerful enough to play the game you want and maybe a controller friendly UI
Seems decent, only issue would be life cycle. It's competing with consoles which usually last 5,6 years, and devs usually get everything from that hardware. This , being a PC , won't really get same treatment.
Does anyone know if this can run the pc version of minecraft?
yes it can
+Dominic Galante ...is this a serious question?
It only can run the PS4 minecraft
WHY WOULD U BUY THIS FOR MINECRAFT?!
Dominic Galante With its hands tied behind its back, blindfolded. Even highly modded (250 mods) I was getting a consistent 55-60 on max settings. If you are just getting it for minecraft, just build one yourself or look for something cheaper.
Could I play gta 5 with a mod like lspdfr on the desktop?
Yes, while on the windows desktop you can do anything a PC can do.
That's awesome, Thanks
I'm curious did you ever buy it and play LSPDFR, cause I'm thinking about buying it for that reason
bump the ram up to 8gb you can run high setting smoothly
