What cpu would you recommend for 2024
What's the latest chip and fastest and size ram you could upgrade one of these to today in Dec 2023?
first of all, buy a copper cpu heatsink. then, buy a dell 330w external psu. final step, buy top of the line thermal compound and stick an i7-6700k in it. it’s the best cpu it’ll take. for ram, the most it’ll take is 1x16gb 2133, i believe.
sorry for the misinformation. i don’t know much about the r1, but the listed specs are the latest for the r2.
Pro tip... Use a PC duster to get the dust out of here before you take The heat sinks off. When you are dusting inside the computer make sure you use a finger or something to hold the fans if not still, then at least at a slow speed because you can break the fans. Lowers the risk of contaminants when you are removing the CPU or adding paste. Also a lot of times overheating issues are just because the fans aren't blowing efficiently because of dust or the heat sinks are full of junk.
dude thanks for the tips!
Is i7-4770 is maximum upgrade option for an alpha r2?
Enjoying ur videos from south korea. God bless u.
Do you need to upgrade the power supply since the one you use draws more power? The alpha r1 comes with a 130 watt power supply.
ya i would think you would need too but you dont it can handle the upgrade of the new cpu have done this in 5 of them from i3>i5>i7 all have worked no issues with running out of power they are all low power CPUs really.
I always use an old sock to clean up thermal paste.
haha that works too!
Is there a cpu for the alpha that supports Windows 11?
Thanks alot for all the good content. Keep up the good work. If I wanted to build the best VR gaming system. What steam machine and hardware upgrades do you recommend for 2022??
Depends on what games you are playing, etc and budget of course
@@GreyTechLive hello friend and.thanks for responding I truly appreciate you.I have a sizeable budget as we are looking into setting up a VR themed park as a business..Do you have another form of contact where we can chat more freely??
@@osholajones5084 wow that sounds amazing ya sure join our discord group look for link in description of the videos :)
For alienware steam machine r2, what cpu you recommend me to upgrade ? , please
Is their any list of compatible upgrades for the alpha?
2x ram sticks up to 16gig at 1600hz ddr3 , 4th gen i3, i5 , i7's but the issue is the power draw for the T variant inside these cases run 35W power where say the one in this video hs is using is 84W pull power so i am not sure what issues might come or even would come from that. like it could burn out the mobo sorta thing. and then you can upgrade to SSD , as far as i know this is the only upgrades you can do. so as long as you can find a T variant CPU or at minimum the S variant cpu's that are 4th gen intel you would be better off, dont use a K version as they are for over clocking and this box just cant run the power for it i think and would melt something along the lines
Hey thanks for the reply and all the detailed information but yeah you can upgrade the CPU no problem the hard drive to an SSD and upgrade the memory let me know what you want to upgrade and I can point you in the right direction
@@AlteredCarbons one of my dim slots it Broken I was wondering if I were to get one 16 gig stick if it would work. It’s running on one 4gig rn but was running on 2.
@@aldenmann1996 you could run 1x16 gig im sure, but unfortunately you wont see much in gains cause 2x anything is what PC's really want. what broke on your dimm slot for it not to work? if you go to a single 8gig for now it would be a cheaper route. you MAYBE able to un sodder and re sodder in a new ram slot but do not quote me on that. i personally haven't needed to do anything like that so i am un sure if that would fix your issue. but bumping up to 8 , hell maybe even 16 will be a upgrade for you but with out 2x dimms you wont see the gains you really want. you might be able to buy a whole motherboard for an R1 on ebay as people part them out all the time but they still push 150-200 for just the board so keep that in mind
I don't think it's compatible with 16 gb dimms because of their motherboard limitations but you can double check by googling the main board model to see what the max supported memories that I can't imagine being more than 8 gigs per slot
I went found the cpu compatibility list got the fastest it supported then upgraded the ram and gave it a SSD then installed Batacera it now lives as my Retro Gaming Rig so i can play the classics like Nes/SNES/Sega/Game Boy /Color/Advanced Game Gear /N64 but this morning i was hit with the Dredded 5 Yellow Blinking. I will also be modding the top to allow the fitment of a slim 120m Noctua to give it far more cooling.
yellow light means dead CMOS battery
@socialabsence4118 thank you ordered a replacement worst spot for the battery buried under the frame of the motherboard but it now lives as a bazite emulation rig.
Is there a certain torque spec for the cpu screws?
so i have a question, the i3 that is in this is the low power draw T variant that runs 35 watt power draws, so i was told to run the T version of the CPU i am upgrading to, the i7 you use is 84 watt power draw, the S version is 64watts and the T version is only running 45 watts. have you seen any issue running a much higher demanding cpu? i want to upgrade mine but having a hard time find the T variant's at a price im willing to pay
You don't have to use a T variant. If you put in a normal processor it will just throttle down to the tdp that is available for the system. Iv been running mine like that for 5 years now. No issues.
@@leqendz8250 how well does it run? Does it thermal throttle? Can I put in a i7 3770 in?
Just make sure it's the right socket type and compatible one but yeah it doesn't really throttle or anything works very well with a i7
@@randomtube8226 its a "FCLGA1150" socket, i went with the i7-4785T to keep power in check with the specs of the mother board, but as others have said you can go with the i7-4790S as well. i've had mine fully upgraded now for about 2 years and i still use it today. its been downgraded to my kitchen PC but it still works like a charm and with an SSD+ new wifi card+ 16gb of ram+ cpu , its a lil beast of a pc and i wont be getting rid of it any time soon. i highly suggest upgrading the wifi card to at least wifi-5 but im sure a wifi-6 card would work as well just make sure its the right form factor for it
Does the LGA1150 sound right for the socket type?
Is the i7 going to harm the mobo or anything with just it's regular power supply it comes with or should I upgrade that too?
Nope you should be ok I have stock psu and i7 for years never had an issue
Hi. I have the alpha R2 with the i7 6700T 2.80ghz. My gpu is the Alienware amplifier 1070ti. I want to upgrade my cpu. Newer games do not stay at 60fps and stutter. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Does it over heat?
It doesn't works perfect
I’m s there a certain brand I have to buy and/or what do you recommend I’m running an i3
Well if you want better performance I definitely upgrade to a i7 if you do a lot of gaming and a ssd drive then this will run most games pretty good but newer games not so good
Ok thank you I’m definitely going to have to upgrade
Yeah definitely it's worth it a couple hundred bucks and you have a great computer check out eBay for use i7s for this model and you should be good around of 100 bucks maybe
Dang, I bought the i7-4770 to replace my i3-6100T and it doesn't fit. The little tabs don't line up. Any thoughts?
Hm seems like you have the newer version of a Alienware model since there was a 2nd generation of them
The 6th gen cpus use a newer, different socket than 4th gen cpus
Does anyone know if the GPU is upgradable from the 970 on the steam machine Linux based? Mine came with 16 GB of RAM and an i7 processor, but it's the GPU that's a GTX 970 that I believe is holding me back. I think I'd even be willing to get a midsize Tower if possible. But I'm not entirely savvy with this stuff
Unfortunately it does not a direct upgrade for that because it's on the actual board but I have seen newer Gen models that have a special port on the back that you can actually hook up to a case that's got a full size GPU in it but those are very costly it's almost cost-effect it's just maybe build a newer machine but that's up to you might find a used one on eBay that might be better for your needs
@@GreyTechLive I appreciate the response bro I'll definitely take that into consideration. I might go ahead and build one for sure
@@DadeHudson93 of course! also its called the (Alienware Graphics Amplifier Port (available with NVIDIA GPUs)) its on the back of only the R2 models not sure if that is yours its the latest one before they stop making them. here is a pic of it marked as port #3 i.dell.com/sites/imagecontent/products/PublishingImages/alienware-alpha-r2-desktop/CS1701G0006_Alpha_MLK_pdp_pol_mag_module_07.jpg
What i7 did you use for this?
Intel Core i7-4770
Is the gpu upgradable
It's not sorry man :( I wish
Get a alienware amplifier and then get a adapter
@@heyitsron1941 i would if you could but that requires a special cable port and these dont have that on the back too old lol unless you have the Alienware Alpha R2 version than you can do it but this is the R1 version.
@@GreyTechLive wrong yes it is you can buy a external gpu
Lol yeah if you have the newer model but not the older one like shown in this video so it really depends on what you have.
What did I do wrong, the computer is no longer outputting video....
maybe the cpu you got is bad or not right model check memory also re-insert it or try other kind.
@@GreyTechLive thank you for getting back to me, but I realized the issue a little after the fact. when I was trying to clear away the larger debris from the dried thermal paste that wouldnt blow out my vinyl glove snagged one of the pins on the motherboard and bent it over...
o crap, hope you got it fixed..
@@ChatookaMusic
I have to alpha with a Intel i5 4590T 2.0ghz with 8gb ram. What can I upgrade to . Newer games are laggy.
ya sorry to say if you don't have the Alpha 2 then their is not much to do since whats really hurting you is the built in gpu video card you have in it so old hard to run newer games :(
@@GreyTechLive most games work very well but a few new ones cause my fps to drop badly even with the dedicated WiFi I use
@@1969chgoodwin it's just not enough anymore on the gpu side for the latest games.
@@huzcer this is the only game I have a problem with. Some games require more than this and run well
@@1969chgoodwin what game? I have one as well but its day is over. The GPU is just not up to it anymore. A cpu upgrade won't do much if anything at all for you as the wattage to the CPU is restricted in the alpha and only old CPUs can be used that fit socket 1150. The 860m GPU is just well past it now for the latest games
