You can fletch feathers on your arrows to make up for the lighted knock!! Vanes are around 7-9 grains each. Feathers are less than a grain.
Feathers also don’t work right in rain

It helps with aluminum or fmj arrows to rough up the area you intend to Fletch with coarse grit sand paper( 120-220 grit). It helps with carbon as well.

I’m shooting 528 grains and fixed blades for whitetail with 200 grains up front. With fixed blades with high foc you get a ton of momentum. Momentum is better than foc
Same here I shoot fixed blade arrow weight starting at 510gr to 650gr

I need to talk to you guys, because I use wraps. Not only do I love them, but without them my spine seems too week. 30" DL, 78#, 250 spine...
How do you avoid the problem of the riser catching the broadhead and pulling the arrow off the bowstring when cutting shafts close to the rest? Maybe its not a thing but I'm new to compounds and saw something about that being a problem and it's kinda freaking me out.

620 grain arrow with a 12% foc and 70lb draw is where I landed after many years of experimentation, a heavier arrow will also benefit you with a much more quiet bow.
Mile wide pin gaps. Dropping 5 inches every five yards.
@@tylercarder581 with my slider sight I thankfully don't deal with pin gaps, shot my deer this year at 65 yards. It works and it works well set my dual pin slider at 30 and 40 respectively and I'm covered from 20 - 50 with zero adjustment needed.
I apologize but I'd like some quick clarification if you could...When he says cut your arrow a half inch infront of your "launcher" does he mean your rest? Riser? I've just never heard that term. Thank you!
Good video fellas. I would like to get your opinion on something. I am a 29 1/2 inch draw length shooting arrows that are 29 inches out of my compound set at 65 pounds. I’m currently shooting East and FMJ’s in a 340 spine. I know because they are a heavy arrow to begin with getting more FOC is tough. What are my best options to try and get a little bit more weight upfront without having to drop down to a 300 spine? I’m currently shooting a 100 green tip. I’ve considered brass inserts as well as just increasing to a 125 green tip. Thanks.
I always put in the BRASS inserts from easton - start there! 50-75 grains.
If you are using sight tapes for yardage, such as the black golf ascent, how do you adjust when switching arrows? If I hunt with a 7gpi arrow and shoot a specific speed, then bump up to an 11gpi arrow, obviously the bow slows down so how would you adjust that on your sight?

I run a factory tape that's dialed for my 430gr arrows and I have my 20 30 40 50yd marks sharpied on for my 615gr elk arrows.
Does the single bevel edge have an affect on the arrow fletching
Not directly. However, if you don't run the correct helical/offset( and the proper wing if you're using feathers) with a single bevel it won't spin properly and will act, basically, like a double bevel. So, right helical with right Bevel and left helical with left bevel. You can run straight vanes, but you won't see as much spin in the target( marginally).
Good vid. I been in the process of building an elk arrow and im wanting to get a little guidance on my arrows now and what i should do to them to make them better. Bow specs are 28 draw, labeled a 70# bow but it actually measures at 65-68#. Arrows are carbon express wolverine 55-70, 10-10.5 GPI, 28.5 length, 345 gr. Total arrow weight (arrow only no Broadhead with 11 gr. #2 aluminum insert, 7 gr. each for blazer vanes times 3 for 21 gr. total, 10.5 gr. nock, and no wraps), total arrow weight with a 125 gr. fixed Broadhead is 470 gr. (345 gr. arrow + 125 gr. Broadhead) making 9.5% F.O.C., at a speed of about 266 FPS. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks
That total arrow weight is plenty to punch through an elk, assuming that it's a fixed head and your bow is super tuned. My personal FOC sweet spot experience has been in the 13-15% range however, it's going to only matter to you and how you're shooting. Let us know how your broadhead tuning is goes!

So what is your recommendations for total arrow weight and range of FOC for elk. My drawl weight is 70 pounds in my ear length is 28 inches.
so you want someone to calculate it for you? did you not watch the video?
I'd say that's personal preference. Figure out the farthest shot you'd take and build an arrow that'll get it done at that distance. If you're only going 50 and in you can get a really heavy arrow, but farther you may want a lighter arrow.
What is the sweet spot for FOC percentage? Is there a minimum target you want to try and hit?

What is your recommendation on the least poundage you should use to bow hunt an elk? I shoot 60 lbs. due to shoulder surgery. Is that practical or should I use a firearm?
Kevin, I’m not an expert in any way but have looked into this extensively. There is a lot of data showing that arrow weight, FOC and super sharp cut on contact broad heads matters more. People are getting consistently great penetration on large animals with less poundage running 650gr and 20%+ FOC. You will need to know your range for longer shots but you will likely blow right through an elk.
60 lbs is PLENTY for elk as long as you use the right arrow/broadhead setup. (500+ grain arrow weight with a fixed blade head)
I shoot 55Ibs at 27" draw and it's been deadly. I built my arrows off the valkyrie system

That man is very smart and you should listen to him when he tells you to go with a lighter GPI arrow I’m shooting 60 lb 450 gr arrow 27.5 arrow 175 grain up front 6 inch wrap in the back and running 14.2 foc. Fmj are trash
or, have a high weight with a high FOC and literally be able to shoot any animal at any angle and get a passthrough (ethics put aside)

Check out he Axis Match Grade arrows - 300 or 340 spine with some weight up front! 50-75 grain insert and a sharp fixed broadhead, like the grim reaper micro hades 3 blade, that's obviously my two cents.

I shoot traditional archery, so I’m already a minority, and I haven’t seen a difference with high FOC and low FOC out to 40 yards. I haven’t seen a difference on animals as well. I shot 2 does and a bear with 2 different arrows and I haven’t seen a difference in penetration at all. Just my experience.
As a stick bow shooter myself I bet you're already tuning your arrows really well, and FOC generally matters more on harder targets like elk. That's the theory. Have you really shot at 40? dang I can barely get half my arrows on the target at 40, but I'm also shooting really heavy to be gentle on my antique bows.

Elk Shape unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity yet for elk, but a bunch of feral Texas hogs. And I get pass throughs with hogs. I am running xtorsion arrows with 200 grain steel inserts and 200 grain iron will broadheads. Love the set up. And by the way I subscribe and love the channel

Sorry but there is no such thing as overkill when bow hunting. I shoot 600 grains with a 175 grain Iron Will for EVERYTHING
400gr arrow for elk no thanks. 550+ and a razor sharp fixed blade at least. More worried about hitting the elk than killing it.

Doubt you’ve set yourself up for failure. I have killed plenty of game with a Rth bear bow. Are there better accessories than what comes on any “rth” package? Yes of course there are but you should be able to shoot very well with the ready to hunt packages if you know just a bit about tuning and adjusting sights,etc.
@@clintharding657 Thanks for the wise words. I have learned from past experiences that perfection comes from consistent and repetitive practice. No days off! I love being able to use these videos to pick up knowledge to bolster my skill set - "add a few extra arrows in my quiver."
Just get started bud - you can always revise your setup later. The most important thing is that you're starting.
I like your content but the guy you are talking about gives the least specific information I’ve ever heard. The only specifics given were from you. I like your vids but not this guy. He tells you what things are but not one recommendation.
