It can actually be really hard putting on a heavy backback. Even if you can lift it easily on your back, it is harder to lift it up behind you and then getting your arms trough the right strops, especially if you have short arms. The best thing to do is often putting it on sitting like she did, but then it is hard to get up because you have so much weight behind you. The trick is to get your legs underneath yourself, but that takes training and a not too heavy backpack.

From a 4 hour trek down, it only felt like 30 mins because of how hyper and positive I was. My whole team felt the same and I guess I'm writing this because the guide lady was smiling so much, and it's definitely the way you should hike -smiles galore, and the general atmosphere will be so much better.
This helps your mental burden (of continuous hiking, especially if the trek is hard) and forces you to push your limits in a healthy and positive way.
I'm no expert, just a 16-year old who loves hiking and camping, but take my advice to just smile, even when you're crying from how tolling it is.
You know you've lived in New England too long when 30 degrees is normal.

Agreed. And the way to get someone to never go camping again after the first time is to make it more difficult then it has to be. The first time shouldn't be more then a mile hike in. The pack shouldn't weigh more then 25 lbs. and they should bring at least one luxury item (pillow, sleeping pad, plushie [LOL..I do that every time...but he doubles as a pillow]).They should be allowed to have fun.
