I remember being emo back in high-school, I would always get compliments of my shirts and hair, being emo, punk, metalhead, and goth is not about being sad or hate the world, it's about expressing yourself and being yourself, I'm so tired of dumbass "normal" people stereotyping sub cultures they know nothing about, back in high school I got asked the most dumbest question, the girl asked if I hate everyone just because I wore black clothes 😑, sometimes I see emos who are like 30s and I'm like "you should probably let go of that phase" but sometimes I'm like nah if they are happy then they are happy, be yourself, don't let others bring you down just because of your lifestyle is different, be yourself, be unique in way, and be respectful to others, dress however you want until the day you die

For me, being emo isn't about dressing up as something and stuff but rather just accepting that you cannot be happy cause you got, clinic depression, it might just be a faze or whatever more than what the outside world really thinks of it, like people just think it's people who like listen to death metal or some similar kinda rock and cut yourself for fun or try to show yourself as different. You can be emo and not like all that kinda dressing up like that with skinny jeans, emo hairstyle, piercings, being emo is also just being unhappy or depressed, accepting that you're depressed and live with it or just going through a tough time and you might just like sad songs or what people call "emo songs", not cause you wanna be different and *show* that you're emo but rather you just like to listen to the truth, someone's raw feelings and relate to them in a way and that also kinda helps you figure yourself out more...

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

I grew up around goths and DnD, so I became emo when I was 16. I didn’t actually grow out of it until I was safely away from my bullies at 19 in college.
