I can’t stand dvd/Blu-ray cases with sleeve/slip covers where you have to pull the disc out. The last thing I want to do is handle the disc in a way where I smudge it with my fingers or risk damaging it. Have you seen the Back to the Future trilogy Blu-ray set where the disc were held in in such a way that they actually included instructions on how to remove theme
lol, I have that same Ninja Turtles set. Great list! One DVD packaging that has long bothered me is the one for WALL-E. Instead of a standard case, Disney decided to just give it a thin sleeve to hold the discs in. It's so weird having it on the shelf next to normal looking DVDs.
I remember that, their “Eco-Friendly” set, just as Disney was still releasing every other movie they ever made in plastic sets (including Wall-E on Blu-Ray). I don’t even understand that. Isn’t the issue with plastic that it can be wasteful for one time use? DVD cases should be used forever in theory, so I wouldn’t think that plastic would be nearly as destructive to the planet as, say, water bottles.
After buying Disney movie with Blu Ray/DVD Combo Pack move the disc somewhere safe until get Blu Ray Replacement Case the Viva Elite is safe for Blu Ray and DVD
@@CinephileStudios The first season of the Battlestar Galatica reboot had godawful packaging that made the discs a pain in the ass to remove without accidentally damaging them. Also I hate double-sided DVDs, way too easy to damage, a pain in the ass to clean and totally unnecessary(you can easily fit two movies or two versions of the same movie on one disc without having to make it double-sided)
@@CinephileStudios The most interesting DVDs for me were the ones released by platinum in the early 90s(They did direct to video titles like Big City Blues and Perpetrators of the Crime) as they were thinner then normal DVD cases and made entirely of clear plastic(with a repeated DVD logo along the spine)
@@theharmonholedamon2008I have Pokémon 2000 and the South Park movie, they have double-sided discs. However, one side contains the 4:9(?) and 16:9 versions on their sides.
Those snap cases that WB and New Line used made the films stick out on the shelf, and the snapper sometimes snags the film next to it as you take it off. Never was a fan of those cases, even back then. On another note, another bad case to mention is the 25th anniversary Back to the Future trilogy set where they put in instructions on how to take out each disc, since the button they used to hold the discs in place was more difficult to deal with.
My copy of the Spider-Man trilogy comes in a fold-out thing with the discs in sleeves. I’ve also noticed how studios are using larger cases that can fit up to 20 discs, but at the cost of said discs overlapping. I recently bought a reissue of the Rocky and Bullwinkle complete series with that packaging, and while I’ve not experienced any issues with the discs, getting to them isn’t easy; the overlapping issue also threatens the season two discs (four flipper discs). FWIW, Paramount did recently rerelease both Ten Commandments films in a simpler, more effective digibook.
While editing this I found that they released it again with the same features 🙄 but in hindsight, I still paid less for my current set than the Amazon listed price for the 2020 set. THAT’S how cheap that set is. Nobody wanted to keep it.
The most annoying packaging for a set of multiple movies that I ever bought was the very first Blu-ray collection of all 4 Hunger Games titles. The discs were housed in a fold-out plastic tray that would slide out from a thick cardboard casing. This system looked great and seemed very protective. HOWEVER, the fold-out tray was designed to slide out from the bottom of the cardboard casing and not the side, and there was NOTHING holding the tray up in the casing. This caused the tray to fall out from under the outer shell every single time it was in a vertical position and not sitting on a shelf. This meant that I always had to either hold it awkwardly from the bottom or use two hands whenever moving/holding it. Terrible design flaw I'm baffled made it through the manufacturing process.
Great video! Thank you for mentioning the Warner Bros snap cases. My dad used to have quite a few of those and I always thought that that was how everyone did early DVDs back in the day, but I guess not!
The ‘Friends’ case is called a DigiPak. In a cost cutting effort this yielded slightly larger artwork & more cardboard, and less plastic. The “STAR WARS-the Complete Saga” blu-ray packaging had a terrible sleeve system.
14:16 So THAT’S where they got the Shrek Retold Ogre-Sized Box Set VHS design from! It has a signed poster and the soundtrack on tape in the extra space. It did get kinda beat up in shipping though. Nothing a little tape couldn’t fix.
Someone may have commented already, but you can remove the cardboard from the Warner bros DVD’s, you need to unsnap the back of the case (top and bottom) then it can slide out.
The whole time I was watching this I kept thinking of my Ten Commandments box set, thinking "He probably won't have that one." Surprise! No surprise, however, that it was your most hated one. I bought mine used and, while it hasn't fallen apart as much as yours has, the prongs are kind of soft and get mashed or broken and don't want to hold the discs. To make matters worse the Blu-ray discs containing the '56 version were defective. I saw no signs of scratches but the discs lock in various places, including the parting of the Red Sea (or, rather, the sea swallowing the Egyptian charioteers)! Thankfully the bonus disc with the '23 version was fine, really kind of the whole reason to get this set. Of course now there is a new set with both films in more standard packaging, finally. I recently bought the '56 version in a stand-alone set. The disc faces don't match the ones in the box set, though.
I only bought that crappy set for the low price, but I’m guessing they’re so cheap since no one wanted to keep them. I saw they released a new set this year, and honestly, I’m tempted to get it just so I can put it on my shelf and get rid of this box set, but I often show it to friends for a laugh. Why was this idea allowed??
The Futurama 23 disc 8 season boxed set. The things that hold the DVD's attached to the inside of the front and back cover are so stiff and ill fitted they can shatter the DVD's when you try to remove them.
The Guillermo Del Toro set reminds me a lot of a Hellraiser Box set with four discs that opened up just like that. But instead of having the discs go into the side of the cardboard they where put on top of it. Very cool and convenient packaging. The worst Box I've ever bought is Justice League TAS on DVD. Everything was so floppy and the holder didn't really hold the discs but were just there for them to rest. Which meant that everything was lose as soon as you opened the case.
@@CinephileStudios Yeah, kinda hard to find sometimes so I like to have at least the ones I like at home. Anyway, I later found the Bluray versions that hade great packaging. Nothing fancy, just the discs in a reliable case.
I hated those Homer/character head cases. I remember the studio offered mail-in replacement cases, which matched the previous sets, so of course I went that route.
Okay, I'll see you the Ten Commandments box set and raise you the Twilight Zone Complete Series Blu-ray set. You haven't experienced media hell until you've tried to take the discs out of this clamshell abomination. I cracked enough discs that I had to get THREE sets to make one good one! It's the only set in my collection where I bought a separate DVD/Blu disc wallet to hold them! Absolutely awful!
The 3rd pokemon movie came in that cardboard snap case too, I never minded it too much because the disc was at least in its holder. Also I hated Simpsons box sets from season 11 onwards because the discs would be in cardboard sleeves and it would be easy to scratch them getting them out
Mill Creek is a blessing and curse. One one hand they release a lot of obscure stuff (especially westeran animation from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s) that might not see release otherwise for really cheap. On the other the actual quality of their packaging is complete shit because they basically target straight-to-bargain-bin pricing with their products. I'm also surprised you'd did list any of CBSs horrendous series sets of old shows that are just stacks and stacks of discs inside an oversized clamshell on here.
Surprised you didn't mention the box sets that have glossy cardboard pouches for the discs - Stargate SG-1 set in the 10 season box was the worst - folding out pouches with glossy inserts that scratched the discs and you have to manhandle the discs (put finger prints all over them) to get them out. I ended up putting the 50 discs on to a spindle so they didn't get scratched whenever I watched them. The same with the more recent Alfred Hitchcock 4K classics collection. Glossy pouches made like the page of a book and the ONLY wat to get them out was to put your fingers all over the discs. Craziness.

One that I got annoyed with was the Back to the Future blu ray set. The discs felt like they were glued in there and I almost snapped them in half trying to get them out!
Omg I just got one of the WB dvds like that brand new dvd but during shipping the disc clip got completely destroyed. And removing the tape slightly damaged the cover :( luckily I have a 3d printer and was able to break off the old clip completely and mouth a new printed clip and save the case. Yeah, I get around shoddy packaging by searching for earlier releases with normal blu-ray cases and transferring the disks from newer releases into the older, yet better packaging. It's great for making combo packs. I once had the first ten star trek movies in separate blu-ray and dvd collections, then I carefully bought each separate blu ray release and used extra cases to turn the entire collection into a combo set. Though to be fair, the X-Men and Star Wars sets already had good packaging, it was just nicer to have each film from those collections in individual cases.
