I used to belong to an audio forum. A guy said that he ripped all of his CDs to his computer and sold all of his CDs. His computer crashed and he lost everything. I'll bet he wished he had kept his CDs!
I’ve known a few people that’s happened to. Could have been avoided by having backups of course! I did the same when the iPod first appeared, and now rip all my CDs to WAV, but one thing I never did was sell any of them.
I ripped all of mine,but never sold and I will never do it.
Now he probably has a spotify account and could care less.
I got 4000 cds ripped to a computer but I keep four back ups in a fireproof box.
back in 2003 I ripped all my CDs, 600+, then stored them all in three huge CD wallets together with the accompanying sleeves and threw away the plastic thingamagics (diamond something-something?). I did that so I could store my CDs at my dad's house without taking up too much space and simultaneously carry my music with me.
All three backup hard drives mysteriously died while doing some reorganisation of my data in 2013. I can't begin to describe the euphoria I felt when I realized that all those CDs where safe with my dad back home!
I own about 4,000 cds. Never getting rid of them. Made the mistake of selling over 6,500 vinyl albums in 1996.
Yeah those 6,500 vinyl albums would translate into a lot of money today. However it's time to look forward and I think the CD will be the next big thing in the coming years.
@@mykandrew Really ? Who buys vinyl ? How would you sell it as a private person ? I sold my 1000 vinyl LPs to someone who paid me 2000 Euro for them. Yea sure he had some albums in his shop priced for a 100 later. But does that mean they are worth it and anybody will buy them ? Same with CDs, i have a Blues collection that would be impossible to replicate but what is a CD worth ? 50 cents ?

I'm about to turn 24 years old, and my CD collection is getting close to 500. All my college buddies joke that I'm singlehandedly keeping the CD industry alive lol. Always will be a champion of buying CDs!
When physical media is finally gone, the online providers will increase subscription costs dramatically as there will be no alternatives. CDs and other physical media are valuable!
There as long as digital media exists, there will be paths to consume it for free.

I can’t see physical media disappearing completely. In spite of audiobooks and the Kindle, etc, there are still plenty of people reading books and plenty of bookshops around, here in the UK at least.

Why what would happen?
I bought CDs all throughout high school, despite their decline in popularity (this was the early 2010s). I got made fun of for lugging around a portable CD player and 2 or 3 CDs, but I stubbornly stuck with the format. One of my favorite things to do at night before bed was picking out the CDs that I would take with me to school the next day. A decade later, I still buy CDs and will continue to buy them for as long as I can.

I started middle school in late 07 and everyone already had mp3 players and ipods while portable cd players pretty much gone. Cds were still popular for at home or the car.
@@albertpintor3522 portable cd players were awkward because you needed to take several cds to play over some hours. I remember,I used to have 2. I rather used them in a garden etc. Mp3 players....those rocketed portable music😎
@@marioplus321I can understand that. But me personally? I was a bit weird. I only needed the one CD, so no need to lug around multiple jewel cases. Just the player was all. I loved listening to an album until I memorized all or at least most of the songs, only then would I trade the CD out for another.

I recently found an entire box full of metal albums next to a dumpster and most of the bands i had never heard of... This resparked that love for listening to physical media and i am pretty thankful for that.

Nothing quite like unwrapping a special release gatefold album. Digital will never replace the feeling of sitting down and pouring over the album art while listening to a new release of your favourite band.

I've been collecting CDs for 30 years now. I have a collection nearing 4000. I'll never give them up. They're still the first format I go to for physical music purchases.

I've also been buying them 30+ years. I only have about 2500 though. What a really miss is the music stores that you could browse around and look at and buy lots of great cds. Keep collecting! 🎵

@onewhitepony None to my knowledge. The ones I used to shop at are all gone. I'm in IL, not willing to go to Chicago even though it's not far. I'll stick to the suburbs. I'll have to look into what might be around. Music has always been my passion.
Where avaliable, I buy CDS from independant artists and the labels. But a lot of bands dont seem to have CD format anymore. Some have cassettes but I dont own a cassette player anymore so I cant buy them, so I am just stuck with the digital option.
I'm 42 and never stopped buying cds. I'm also very fortunate in that there is an incredible independent cd/Vinyl shop 10 minutes away from where I live. The store is pretty huge and has a seperate area for metal and underground bands.
A lot of people say physical media is dead and yet every time I go there, the store is packed. The great thing about it is directly next to the store is Half Priced Books which carries tons of cds/vinyls for dirt cheap.
What I do is buy a cd, rip it to my computer and sync it to one of my MP3 players. I use the cds as a backup in case they stop making mp3 players or my computer crashes.
Also have a respectable amount of Vinyl which I started collecting right after high-school. Only buy Vinyl for bands I really love. Thing is, I don't have a Vinyl player and only buy the vinyls for the cover art as I display them.
There's something special and tangible about holding an actual album in your hands, looking at the art and reading the liner notes. Something that is lost with a digital only collection.
Wish there was a store like that by me.

@@starscreamthecruel8026 this store really is amazing. I've been going to it since I was in high-school. The metal section is its own thing. In that section, the walls are all black and it's dark on there. There's posters and metal shirts on the walls. They sell patches, stickers and all of that. Really a great store. And I absolutely feel lucky to habe something like that.
🤔 I agree...when u put the record and check the art cover and read the inside feels like they were telling the story to me..instaed of streaming it feel unpersonal. I always ❤ and I kept tangible art, book, records, etc. (shout out 2 my hobby for move them with us) It makes me super happy that most of ppl now are getting back to the light path😅
Also with an album cover to read you can learn about the artists, producers and record label which can help make a good purchase next time. Download only people won't know anything. Not even the name of the song likely
I've bought about 400 CD's over the last 4 years. A lot of them are rare OOP first pressings from Japan and West Germany. I will never give up my physical media collections.
Yes. Early pressings of CDs are best. Remasterd CDs not good. Synthetic tone and lack of focus. Good job my man

It's funny that this has been recommended to me since I started buying cds last November as a 23 year old. I only have a cd player in my car, but I feel like I just appreciate music more when I go through a whole album from start to finish and have access to only music that I own. I have 18 so far.

If there is a catastrophic event that takes the internet down, you will be happy to own your own entertainment in form of CD's and DVD's. I sure as hell will keep mine. If it is digital you don't own it. Your account can be cancelled, you can be banned for whatever reasons you don't foresee now from any platform. The level of control over me, as an individual is just too much. The same goes with money. If you don't hold it, you don't own it. Might sound a bit "dark" or pessimistic, but that is my opinion, so excellent job Michael in supporting this cause. I am with you on this one!

It’s fun to dig into the old CD collection and find the ticket stubs from concerts attended in the jewel cases where I used to put them. The 1993 Pearl Jam live performance ticket stub with a $15.00 entry fee is always excellent to run into.
Many of my jewel cases still have remnants of coke :)
I lost all my old ticket stubs. Van Halen 1980 for something like $10, ZZ Top 1979 probably $8. Plenty more big names from the late 70s to early 80s.
Concert ticket stubs...now a thing of the past too.

I never stopped buying CDs. I've always enjoyed the physical nature of music consumption, whether it's placing the record on the turntable or popping the CD into the car stereo. I like discovering new music through TH-cam and other means, but my collection of music is large enough now that I have more than enough to listen to for the rest of my life. I don't need streaming services because I created my own, in a manner of speaking. I run a home media server and can stream my own music I ripped from my own CD collection. But physical media is important for a number of reasons. As you mentioned, the ephemeral nature of digital marketplaces is very real. Whether it's a lot of video games being lost with the closure of the original Xbox Live service or the Wii Shop Channel, or music being delisted because of label/artist disputes, licensing issues (soundtracks), or other reasons, by keeping some measure of physical media around, it helps to preserve the music. Sometimes remasters don't sound as good as the originals (Megadeth). Sometimes re-releases can toy with the contents of the original and change it (Star Wars, anyone?), such as the later re-prints of Ozzy Osbourne's music removing Bob Daisley's bass work because of disputes. It's vital to keep the medium around so that this art can remain relevant years beyond any commercial viability. Buying records in the mid-90's when they were out of fashion was how I discovered bands like Yes, ELP, Asia, and Steely Dan. I'm hopeful that for younger folks, they'll have similar experiences buying cheap second hand CD's of older music that they may not be aware of, but can find something they connect with.
I'm from Brooklyn, NYC......where we used to have a record (and/or CD) store on every block! NONE of these stores exist anymore!
I own thousands of CD's ranging back to 1985. The problem with download is not only sound quality, it's also the availability of certain versions of songs. Some of the versions that I want to hear are just not available on streaming platform. I see albums disappear and never to show up again. I like to own my recordings and knowing that I have the version of songs that I want to hear.
I love my CD's and am buying them in frequent purchases, either locally or via Amazon. My collection is growing, much like my LP collection did over the 1970's to the 1990's. I sold them off in the late 1990's as I fell on harder times and needed the cash. I'm older now, and don't have the time that I used to spend to give the LP's the TLC they needed for the goal of greater longevity. So, CD's are my choice now. CD's are perfectly fine for me today, so my collection grows! 😊👍

@Josianne-Music that's debatable some first pressings are really good and sometimes very seldom remasters are better also I find It can kinda depend on what kind of music you listen too as well

CDs will always resonate with me forever. I still have all my original underground hip hop CDs from the 90s and early 2000s.
Being a late 90s/early 2000s kid. I can tell you much like crate digging for vinyls, I also love CD digging as well. There's a pure joy and mystery going to places like CD EXCHANGE, half price books and independent brick and mortar shops scouring through the cds.
I collect most underground/ indie hip-hop artist. Remember there was no TH-cam or streaming platforms back then, so the only thing I got to go off by was the cover of the cds. ESPECIALLY for underground artist. But there was always a shrill of excitement and uncertainty of what I was about to hear.
Putting that CD into my car CD player would be a sonically incredible experience. Because there's no telling what I'm going to hear within a 12 track album .Could be gold, or could be dirt. Regardless that's why I loved buying cds. The sheer excitement of just cruising around town listening to something new.
Back in the day in NYC, there were two great spots... Tower Records on 66th and Broadway and HMV on Times Square!!! Loved and miss those places!!

My mom still has her 80’s rock cassettes that she listened to in the 1987 transam she used to have…..man what a time that was👍🏻 cranking white snake or Motley Crue with the T-Tops off…..I wanna go back to the 80’s😢
I remember cruising Friday nights with my pal in his 1987 Camaro listening to Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” CD. It always smelled like coconut, and the the girls loved it. What a time to be alive!

I did what a lot did, replaced my vinyl records with CD'S in the 80's/90's and been my main source of listening ever since.
A few years ago my wife suggested we get a turntable again and we really got immersed in albums again and couldn't be happier.
I am retired and this is a hobby for me so I enjoy all the things that go into it.
Stream for casual background listening, still play a CD every now and then, but for me nothing comes close as a complete music experience as playing an album on one of our turntables.
All that said, if I see a CD I don't have and I like, I'll buy it.
@pnichols6500' I was just about ready to sell all of my albums tapes, turn table, ipod classic , ipod touch both have lots of music on them- plus cd's and receiver. Most of the songs i love are on drives and cell phone. I never play the other items. NOw you give me pause?

As a solo music producer I still press my music on CD. I sold hundreds on my bandcamp page alone. Great channel, glad I found it.
I can't believe minidiscs didn't take off harder. Infinitely re-recordable, impossible to scratch, a MD player in your pocket was only about as big as a pack of smokes.

Minidiscs. Man, that takes me back. Watching Sylvester Stallone pop in a minidisc in Demolition Man. That jet never quite took off, did it.
What about DATs? Are those still around? It came out around the same time, didn't it?
I wandered into a film crew a few years ago and had a sly look at the sound guys set up. They were recording dialogue on a Fostex DAT. I was really surprised.
I lived for a while in Hong Kong and travelled a lot through Asia. Minidisks were a big thing back in the late 90's and you would see them everywhere.
At the same time in Europe and North America just didn't pick up on minidisks l& then the 1st gen iPod was released......
Mini disk had too much data compression and poorer sound quality than CD.
I never caught on to streaming music. I have always leaned heavily towards physical media. In fact: I pre-ordered new albums on the physical format.
I've never subscribed to a music streaming service.

Why I will be doing it in the future is the latest example - I wanted to listen to FIRE IT UP/J.Cocker on Spotify yesterday, but the release is NOT available there!!!Luckily,I own it on cd and I did listen to it:) cheers,mate!
It’s the only way to go. Have LP’s since I was 13 years old. I would buy th3 Beatles new album every time they came out with a new one. This is back in 1964. I will be 74 years old this august and still purchase LP’s and CD’s. I used to live in Brooklyn and go to J&R music.
I still buy CDs, but the prices are going up. I started buying CDs a lot in 2008 at that time people were giving their entire CD collections to thrift stores. I would say the golden age of used CD buying was from 2008 to 2018. Most CD owners have already given those huge CD collections away. Thrift stores don't produce the great results they once did. Goodwill would get in thousands of CDs each week they had nowhere to put them all. Goodwill was trying to sell them for two dollars each no one would pay two dollars each. They would put tables up front and sell them for a dollar each just to get rid of them it was a pain in their ass. On a few occasions they went down to fifty cents each. On a few occasions, I would buy one hundred to two hundred CDs at one time.
I feel this heavy. I was heartbroken when best buy stopped selling music cds. The only problem I see with this is that shopping in person just takes too much time and money compared to online nowadays to make sense. I understand the loss of community and experience of doing it. But the world we live in doesn’t allow for us to lollygag and wander about just having fun shopping for CDs when we have a hundred other things to worry about. I wish it did.
For me, the two main things are: 1. I like to actually *own* my music rather than pay for permission to access it, and 2. the ability to actually touch and hold stuff is always fun. Plus with things like inserts, cd and case artwork, ecc., there's more character to the piece of plastic and cardboard rather than a file.
It does end up being a lot easier, for me anyway, to find random and unique songs on streaming services bc of algorithms, chance, and not needing to buy a whole album just for one song; but there is always the unique feeling of going to the record store, Goodwill, used bookstore, or farmers' market and skimming around the cds and records in case something catches your interest.
I do hope that physical media makes a comeback tho :)
I'm 💯 with you, on buying CDs. I buy at least one a week. U currently have around 1,500. I do own some vinyl, and high resolution download files. But nothing will ever replace my CDs.

I never stopped buying cd's, and have kept them as my main source of music, but have been playing the ripped tracks from my pc for the better part of 20 years. This year I finally got myself something to play/transport them on, a 20 year old cd/sacd/dvd audio player, to give me flexibility for surround music later on. I honestly don't know why I didn't do this sooner, it sounds better than my computer (even as a digital transport) and is so much more enjoyable and relaxing as a listening experience. It even prompted me to buy my first shm-cd, which again, I don't know why I didn't try this sooner. I'm now carefully laying out long term plans to upgrade this device as my digital audio platform, and adding way more cd's to my wishlist as a result. I can't say this is nostalgia, because I never stopped using cd's, this is more borne out of my hifi journey than anything else, but I am thoroughly enjoying it and see my house filling up even more with discs in the future
Some of my happiest memories are buying cd's, opening the jewel case, having the lyrics to read. All tangible. Im a 20th Century boy and proud of it.
"All tangible": Physical media is personal property, and can be bequeathed to another; digital media is leased/rented, and cannot be bequeathed to another. (The Great Reset: "You will own nothing, and be happy.") In addition, Red Book [CD: 44100] provides consistent audio fidelity'; I am an audiophile, and I find lossy [MP3] anywhere from disappointing to unlistenable. I rip CDs to hard drive, and store the CD; combining superior playback software with a superior offboard DAC, I am able to approach "analog" listening pleasure from my computer. I am finally content without vinyl.
@@DanielByers-qf9qi I'm glad you're pleased without vinyl. I, however, like holding the CD in the light and seeing rainbow prisms, the buzz and click sound of it being loaded into the CD player. Again, I'm a 20th Century boy and am proud of it. If, in the future, we will be allowed to own nothing, then I'll be listening to Pictures of You on CD when they bust down my door to arrest me for still owning CD's.

i started to collect records a few year ago but never really considered CD collecting until i met my girlfriends dad, he literally never even spoke to even one of her ex boyfriends but JUST because i have a similar music taste to him we got talking. that day i came home with about 80 CDs from him and now if i see one for a good price i’ll 100% pick it up. physical music isn’t just actually owning your media and being able to do whatever you want with them, it’s a social experience that helps form connections!! I found a store in town that sells cd’s dirt cheap and they have thousands of them , it’s amazing. I go in and buy 4 or 5 each time I go there .I’ve owned cd’s since the 80’s and will continue to collect them

Im a 15 year old and even if my collection is extremely tiny compared to other peoples collection i love listening to all of them when i come back home.
I think people these days dont get why is so important for artists to buy cds or any kind of physical media because streaming dont gets them any money, also it feels so good having ur favorite album in cd or a collection of ur favorite band/artist, i think people dont lose anything by buying a cd and i wish more people got into collecting them
I make weekly trips to thrift shops and buy CDs all the time..I've been collecting CDs over 35 years and won't stop..
Lately, I've gotten back into the CD format. I enjoy the consistant sound quality--just push play, sit back and enjoy.
When the WEF goes around telling people they will be happy and have nothing, with that in mind, I will keep buying CD's.
Im 26 and have been collecting CDs since around 2009 or 2010. Dont plan on stopping any time soon.
Being able to flip through the booklet and seeing the OFFICIAL lyrics is great. Most of the time when you try looking up the lyrics, theyll sometimes get it wrong. This way, youre getting it directly from the source.
Now, sometimes there can be a mistake here or there even in the booklet. However, not nearly as much as some random person typing it in from memory and posting it online.
Not only that, but sometimes you get artwork and inlay designs that you never wouldve known about if you didnt own the CD or vinyl copy.
I started collecting CDs when there was one store in London with a rack holding all 20 available CDs. My first purchase was about 1983. I also have a bunch of vinyl dating back to the 70s. My mind was blown when I first heard a CD. No hiss, crackle or pops. And no jumping and no more cleaning.
There was a concern in the early days that the CDs would fail over time. But 40 years on they occasionally discolor but still play.
Plus you can rip them to create playlists and have them on your phone!
My first purchase was in 1990. And it is still in progress... :)
My first ones are from 1985, and yes they still play. CDRs from around 2000 too.
In 1984, I took a Sony Discman to the main Melodiya shop in Moscow and nearly created a riot.

You beat me by a couple of years. I bought my first CD in 1985 from Our Price Records. Still have it. I also remember the rumours about CDs self destructing after a couple of years, never had one fail on me yet.
I sold hi-fi between 1976 and 1981. I built my own Dynaco 400 and Pat-5 before that. I bought records by the box lot in Seattle estate sales in the 2000's, typically for around $0.10 per record. I now have around 3,500 records and four turntables. With the exception of the TT I bought new in 1978, I never paid more than $30, and stayed relatively "high end" Direct Drive. Nobody wanted turntables either.🤣 I really enjoy the whole experience of playing records to this day, especially with a good single malt.
But I also remember back in the day all of us audiophiles waiting in hot anticipation for the arrival of the CD. We loved 'em because they were quiet and had amazing dynamic range. Of course, things changed, as we learned about the problems they had (e.g. loudness wars), just as I learned to listen to MP3's and realized the problems they had. But I was in a Goodwill in St Cloud, MN in 2022 and they had a HUGE selection of CD's, all for $0.50 each. I had time to kill so I spend a couple of hours cherry picking the lot. And yes, there WAS some really good stuff there. I ended up with about a hundred, tripling my CD collection. I'm now always on the lookout for places that still sell CD's cheap, just as everyone was doing with vinyl back in the 2000's.
Those days will come to an end, I believe, but change always happens. You never know what is going to become valuable. I sure wish I'd kept my 1954 chevy station wagon. 😁
I still buy them. I bought my first CD 35 years ago and it still plays fine. I don't have a local music store so I have to buy online. They are so cheap most of the time! I want physical media and not to have to rely on the internet to hear music. If the internet ever breaks down I still have my music.

Clearance sections are my general go-to for interesting titles I wouldn't otherwise be aware of. I do buy the occasional brand new full price title, but most of my collection came pre-owned from various clearance sections. What's especially fun to discover, though, are CDs in clearance that are still brand new sealed but are being liquidated out, due to not selling or whatever.
I still collect cassettes, cds and vinyl. Diehard collectors. I respect all music artists and I'll keep supporting purchasing the physical product in all formats
I love my hip hop cds. I always look for the ones I grew up on like all the No Limit Records cds that were put in random bright color plastic cases. It makes me feel like a teenager again getting to find and open a new one
Just found this video scrolling through my home page. Very well said and interesting video. I've been a game and toy collector for a while and relate to all of this. I'm also a musician and also like browsing vinyl and cds wherever I see them to see if there's anything of interest. Cd's are something my oldest son has been getting into collecting, so that's been fun to be apart of as well.
The same goes for TV and movies. With all the streaming platforms, there are many things that risk becoming lost media if the studios decide to pull it for whatever reason, like what Disney did with Willow the TV sequel.

I started collecting 78s when the disposal stores were throwing out by the bucket load. That was in the early 60s. I then started with LPs (from the el cheapo "Pye" labels and the Record Club re-records to the Deccas and DGs and Verves). I embraced the CD revolutions with a passion as I still to do today-although I do stream (Tidal). I use that to find the music I can't do without as I fear streaming tends to be a transient phenomena apt to be lost in the ether (or the "Cloud"). Hello CDs!
One other thing,you can take a scratched CD and use a good buffing machine and make it look like new.JFJ makes a pretty good buffing machine.Can't do that with vinyl.
I am a loyalist to CDs. I won’t feed the digital monster. If I am paying physical money then I require a physical product in return. I am so frustrated that our society has gleefully forsaken the once rewarding feeling of going into a music store to buy the newest CD from your favorite band. Taking the new CD up to the cashier and proudly buying it. Going out to the vehicle and opening the new CD. Smelling the freshly printed ink while holding the CD in your hands, listening to the new album for the first time and looking at the new artwork. It stimulates all your senses (except taste). This was such a better experience. When I listen to music through my phone, it leaves me feeling so hollow when the music is over as there is nothing to show for my investment. I have well over a thousand CDs and I have no plans of stopping any time soon.
The ONLY time I skip buying a new CD is when the bands/labels pull the despicable stunt of offering “exclusive” songs to the digital or vinyl release that are denied to CD consumers by not including them on the CD version. If I am getting cheated out of extra songs by buying the CD, then I will not pay for an incomplete product. I will just skip the release altogether. But as long as ALL the songs are present on the physical CD then that will always be my preferred format.
I've been moving these last few days and in the process i dug up all my cd's, in a very nostalgic way i went thru them while boxing them and it brought up a lot of memories of days past. In my new living room I am planning to put a record storage cabinet to show off and listen to my vinyls ( I am not a record snob, i just have lots of vinyls and old but good hi def audio equipment that my dad left me) but this got me thinking and i will make extra space to place my cd's and cd player as well.
As im watching this im listening too Black Sabbath The Dio Years on CD and i love it sounds so good and the engagement i get from CDs is so much more enjoyable then streaming music

I still buy vinyl, cds, and cassette, dvd, and vhs…many of what I have cant be streamed, especially the movies. I still have my vinyl from back in the 70s and 80s, original Iron Maiden albums, Black Sabbath, Dio, I have my original Metallica CDs, Megadeth, Anthrax…and i have a box full of Anime VHS, that i got when i was a teenager…I have Ghost in the Shell, and Akira on VHS…I will NEVER give them up.

Great video and better message. As a youngster I had amassed a nice little niche collection of punk albums, then streaming happened and over the next decade or so I slowly lost almost all my CDs. When I found a few old classics in a charity shop (3 CDs for £1!) the youngster in me was resurrected and I went on a mission to replace my previous collection via second hand purchases. It didn’t take long for this to turn into a little hobby in itself. Back in the day I could afford maybe 2 new albums a month, now if spend £20 on used albums I can sometimes have more than 20 CDs! But I don’t just buy any old crap, I only buy what I like listening to, but as you say, thanks to streaming services, I keep finding new and old artists. As my taste and interest evolve, so does my collection. If only my 14 year old self could see this stack I have now.
I made the mistake once of ripping all the singles I bought in the mid 1990’s / 2000’s onto a hard drive then sold the physical media via eBay. The box was huge. It sold very quickly. The selection was club / house variety. Today’s digital streaming isn’t the same as listening to radio and then walking into HMV (uk) and buying hundreds of cd singles one by one. That was my youth in that box of music. I’ve learned the hard way of thinking differently..
though I hear you loud and clear, as a former DJ I am not keeping CDs, Cassettes or Albums around anymore. After lugging crates between gigs and or different house moves, I have been waiting for the day to have my music on a hard drive without having to maintain all that physical media.. And after I had a 3000 piece plus cd/cassette collection get stolen in the early 2000s, it was the beginning of the end for me spending cash to rebuild my collection again. I need freedom to move where I gotta with my music, without being tethered to one place to enjoy it

You are a dj makes sense. This non physical media may work for you but I will recommend to keep a tangible back up of all your music.

We all want accessible music. Before the days of ghetto busters, we had the little mono tape recorders. And as a teen I had a (beefy) portable record player, one with the deep, heavy, solid latched cover. I would open it and have the cover sit at 90° to the player. My little mono tape recorder would be parked in the cover, resting on its side, its microphone aimed at 90° to the record player's small mono speaker, about 4-6" away. I would sit quietly and record my LPs this way, "live." Not a peep was made. And I now had music I could take to school. I was a poor, 15-year-old with portable music. It was love at first listen. :)

Great content. I’m about 3 years from retirement. I’m building my collection, so when I retire, I will have my own permanent library. I enjoy the whole vibe. Going to the few media stores left. Shopping on eBay and Amazon. Recently I have been making purchases from the artist website, so that they can get the profits that they deserve. Another great thing about CD’s is that I can skip, repeat tracks, play whatever track I want, without scratching my disc. Thanks, keep up the good work. 👊🏽
The quality of sound (with my B&W speakers) is just superior with CD's compared to (compressed) streaming. That's another reason I stick to cd's.

I still have all my CDs from the 90’s onward, and still buy and listen to music on CD. Although, my primary means of music enjoyment is vinyl, CD was the dominant format in my life for a very long time. I got into vinyl in the mid-late 90’s, and now my music are in my house is set up specifically dedicated for vinyl and CD.
I’ve got some stuff on both formats that you just straight up can’t get anymore because it’s out of print and has never been on streaming services, or been pulled off streaming.
One of the reasons physical media is important, is because it means more obscure releases can be obtained at some point, secondhand. But relying entirely upon streaming means - if the publisher doesn't license it - you won't have any access to it, anywhere. So many DVDs of lesser known 80's / 90's films I took for granted, can't be found anywhere on the streaming platforms. Ironically, that's where filesharing becomes an important resource, in helping to preserve some of this stuff.
The enjoyment is in the physicality of the item. Having it in your hands. Great video

Everything this person said is the truth and should not be ignored. I still purchase music CDs, to this day, and I do not agree with the fact that there are less CDs on the shelf in Retail and Music Stores. I am truly thankful that this video was made.
In my country we don't have music shops anymore you can find some cd's online if you lucky... It sux😢

I borrow them from the Library. And then I digitize them. I put them on a thumb drive and add them to all of my devices, laptops, desktops and phones.
I absolutely love the CD experience. CD's are forever even when your computer crashes and your had drive dies. CDs come with a little book contacting the Lyrics and often awesome Artwork.
If a hard drive takes a dump its because the user over loaded it. Otherwise hard drives are almost eternal.
@@sidvicious332 I have a 17 year old Hitachi HDD It has had heavy daily use and it is still alive. On the other hand most Seagate and Western digital drives I owned died within 1 to 2 years. I even had two seagate drives die. they where both backup drives they never had to do any daily hard work nor where they ever exposed to vibration, shaking or impact. luck for me I always keep two backup copies.
Most of my friends don't have any backup. They are IT literate people and their laptops have a lifespan of about 2 years when the first thing fails which is usually junk bloat to the point that their operating system stalls they will toss it and get a new one.

I still love CDs to this day, i source mine from car boot sales and charity shops paying no more than. 50p or 1 pound and I’ve found some great artists and titles,,my fave genre is classic rock, metal, and folk, I still buy vinyl too but I’m more selective with vinyl as it’s so expensive nowadays , my collection now stands at around 2000 CDs and the same for vinyl I also have cassettes and shellac 78s..I still love the search , there’s nothing better .
For those who don’t know, Earbook are a thing. It’s a CD release in a Vinyl/book case. It looks great like a vinyl, and (obviously) has CD quality. It’s very popular in the metal genre, with bands such has Nightwish, Ayreon, Blind Guardian, Epica, Sabaton, Leave’s Eyes and more often release their album in that format.

I don’t have a ton but own practically everything I need. Like many of us, I started buying CDs 1989-roughly 2012. As of this moment, I don’t think of them as having “charm” but don’t miss the days of pops and skips on my records. Glad I’ve kept the vast majority and will continue to do so.

I keep my physical media around "just in case" i lose or delete my music. And one of my tiny pleasures is hunting down CDs from bands of long ago or where I'm filling out my collection. I've so many hundreds I've lost count.

Holy crap man, the holy grail music store that was known as Record Time @1:18 I used to go there every week when I was 12 until about 16 years old. I've bought so many of my metal CD's from there, along with a handful up the street at Hot Hits. That was such a huge bummer when Record Time went out of business and turned into a Laundromat. Nothing beats the good 'ol days of picking through hundreds of CD's and getting that rush when you come across something that jumps out at you, and then hoping it doesn't suck lol. That mystery was always the fun part!

My dad still has his CDs bought in Germany and some from Yugoslavia. I bought myself some CDs because I appreciate that artist and their art/music. I even have records. I hope thid culture won't die out. I'm happy that my generation buys records.
Some time ago I told myself, if I ever come back to buying new releases (I was a streaming guy for a while), they're gonna be CDs, period. And just when I was about to cave in and start getting vinyl records, maybe they do have soul, maybe it is fun, maybe it is worth the money, I started a list of nice-to-have's, made comparisons of the sound quality, I looked at my CD shelves and man - I just like my CDs better.
I mean, vinyl record do have their charm, and initial masters (which are mostly available on vinyl) are usually the best masters, but I always loved the elegant and convinient nature of CDs. I like how they're this small, all-in-one package. I will keep my old records, but I'm down with you on this ship and encourage others. CDs are not going anywhere.

I built a collection in a cd binder that I started in elementary through high school and got it stolen a little out of college. I haven’t recovered since but seeing this video is just reminding me to restart my collection ❤
Already on it, man. Been buying them since 2021. Love CDs. They are awesome for a couple reasons. 1. You actually own that music. 2. The audio is super high quality(pretty sure it is uncompressed). 3. There are some songs, and albums that I have found that are exclusive to CD, can't find them digitally.
I've made it a personal note, that any band I like I get their albums on CD. But, something scary about that in this modern day. Some smaller or newer bands don't have CD releases. Some times Records, but almost never a CD. Which is a bit upsetting, but I can understand. It might be hard to try and manufacture CDs when you're a small musician.

Something else I might add is, Japanese releases of some albums typically have a bonus song that was released exclusively for the Japanese version of the album. So if you have the money, it can be cool to pick those up. None of the songs are in Japanese, they just get an extra bonus song. I heard it is because it takes longer to release new albums out there so as a way of saying; "Sorry for the wait." They add an exclusive song.
For real last thing. I've been personally collecting CDs since 2021, but of course my parents also had CDs. I say had, cause of me and my brothers, and moving quite a bit, they lost a majority of them. So, yeah. That is why I made it a personal mission to collect as many CDs as possible throughout the years. To make up for the lost ones. Which I've done okay at so far. Got over 65 CDs. Some are pretty rare too, which is cool.

I had a hire car recently in Australia, it had no cd slot, just a radio and apple play/Android Auto. I wasted half an hour trying to pair my phone, started streaming something from SoundCloud, slightly annoyed that I was paying/using data. An hour later had no signal and no music. This isn't progress.

Although I am not a big CD fan since it tends to scratch easily and sometimes the quality of the format changes the track, I am however a big vinyl fan.
It sounds so crisp and clear. It’s hard to describe it with words but you can hear the difference of the sound quality.
My mom and grandfather have a huge CD collection. I’m sure when the time comes I’ll be keeping their collection.

The problem is less and less music is released in CD nowadays, for example, the soundtrack of Avatar The Way of Water was only released in vinyl. 😢

unfortunately the best portable cd players (Sony discmans) are not being made. If Sony decided to do them again the cd prices would skyrocket
I have several sources of music...cd player, turntable, network streamer, fm and dab radio...well except the cassette player. I get to know new music through the streamer and when I like an album I buy it in physical form.
