My dear friend Brett, you're my hero. This is exactly how clear and concise online lessons should be...there's sooooo many garbage "piano lesson" videos out there, but this video makes me unreasonably happy.
Here's a tip from a cruise ship pianist: if you want to engage people, all that matters is groove and drive. If you want to disengage people, i.e. make them go to bed so you have the evening of, abandon all sense of groove and drive as well as you can. Make it hard for anyone, even a fellow musician, to guess what the tempo is. With a bit of practice you can do this while still objectively sounding good, but those late-late-night guests will all start to saunter off. The bartenders will thank you, and the program director won't be any wiser
Did you mean “off” and not “of”? Not trying to be grammar/spelling police but that single letter “F” completely changes the meaning of your entire comment and makes the reader confused and wonder what you mean.
So true! I worked for Hilton International ents for years and had to play 4 sets a night. Seeing the last guest leave is bar is the best feeling! 🎹Extreme rubato is our friend 😉
I love how simply you break down the theory. Took your notes on how to build major pentatonic scales & transform that into a major blues scale, which I now feel okay about transposing into other keys. Thank you!!
I want to report: I have practised this now for 3 weeks. It works that much fine. I am so grateful for this video. I am a 64 year old beginner. It is so well explained. I actually struggle with improvisation. I am more a sight reader. BUT..... probably you will come up with a video for improvisation explaination. Lots of kisses and regards from Germany!
Great fun ,to start , I recorded the left hand separately and practice soloing over it played back .And you learn the A minor blues scale at the same time !
Hi Brett, Been practicing this for about week now and single hands getting better. Still can't get both to work together. I've been serious with a teacher and lessons for a year and 8 months. Love watching you, Lisa, Jonny and all the positive youtube videos. Thanks for what you do.
I'm not gonna lie. Not really "cocktail" sounding, but a nice way to play something....anything!....when your friends or family say the dreaded "play something!"
Excellent cant wait to try this! One step I would have added is to first try to play just the base note with that left hand, then play the chord and then to the alternating between the base and the 3 other notes. Thats how I will practice it because im à newbie !
Excellent video Brett, thanks so much. I’ve practiced the left hand and the right hand separately for several days now and have finally got those down while playing with a metronome. I love the 2 octave pentatonic scale, and it’s great finger practice, but boy, trying to play both hands is daunting. Even playing the single bass notes on the left hand and a few of the first notes of the pentatonic scale is too much for my brain. I need to keep trying. I’m hoping that once LH and RH tasks become really automatic then putting them together will be easier….
This is a great beginner lesson! Moving the roots down the octave would give it that more authentic stride sound though and make the whole thing sound a lot bigger. This is, of course, a great stepping stone to that!
Sounds like a nice bouncy groove. The first part put me in mind of Heart and Soul, while the next one made me think of The Alley Cat. Great tunes but not sure what that has to do with 'cocktail' music. Maybe it'd work better in a skating rink? When I think if 'cocktail' I picture a fancy restaurant or lounge with diners (or drinkers) quietly clinking glasses in low conversations while an elegantly dressed dude is making tinkly sounds on a grand piano.
The best tutorial EVER!. Thanks a lot for this simple but yet sooo effective tutorial. I wanted to learn this for ages, but couldn't find a proper tutorial without getting it wayyyy to complicated.
Wow, what a video / lesson! I’ve been having so much fun practicing improvisational jazz piano the past couple months, and this will fit right in. Thanks!
Thank you for this video, Brett. I am a very new (2nd week) player, and I look for different practice methods here on TH-cam that will combine practice time with actual playing time all in one lesson. It seems you have done that with this video (for me, anyway) and I will be using this lesson while I practice over the weekend.
That is a great tune. I am going to try it as soon as my Roland LX 708 arrive in ten days from today. I just started my piano lessons a few days ago and already love everything about learning to play. Next up, singing and drinking cocktails!

Thank you, from a cruise ship bar staff. When the guest aren’t drinking or tipping we wanna go to the crew bar
