He left out the video showing the 1,000's of hours of practice needed to run up 4 octaves and 5 notes in stride in each one. But certainly one of the most relaxing videos ever posted!! I was sorry I couldn't leave him a tip!

Good to see someone sharing teaching something so wonderful for free rather than trying to charge for a course which only a select few could ever access, you're a true musician, one who doesn't claim a style and restrict others. Well done
that's absolutely the most appreciable kind of sound you want to hear while talking among friends and cool people are doing the same around you... i'll say the tipic music we italians need in our fuking boring places in order to escape, at least with the mid. thank you and greetings from Roma, Italia.
Wow! This channel is exactly what I've been looking for. I've been teaching myself piano with the help of online resources for 3 years now. I can't wait to go through all of your videos in more depth. I hope your channel gets more subscribers as it deserves!
Beautiful job! And yes keep this alive. It’s magical. I can’t do it but watched my late uncle play like this. There’s something about the human hand utilizing those intervals. Hooked me into a life of music.
Hi Guys - I'm piano teacher and aspiring jazz pianist - signed up to the full PopJazzOnline course as thought it might fill in the gaps of some knowledge - I don't normally bother with reviews (!) BUT so far very impressed....better that I was expecting. Really great content, and a great teacher and jazz pianist willing to share his skills. Easily best jazz pianist tutor online - I've tried a few over the years. Would recommend for any aspiring jazz pianist - good job Gertmund!
I have first seen this video over a year ago, when I started studying jazz with a teacher in Paris. Now with Christmas coming, I'm currently trying to arrange the "Christmas Song" by Mel Torme (sung by Nat King Cole and, of course Michael Bublé) in a nice version and I remembered this free course so I just watched it again, and gave it a quick shot on my keyboard : I'm going to have to practice more, of course, but it's working so perfectly that it's going to be a lot of fun ! I have to admit that this 2-part course is pure gold, because it's summarizing a really cool set of tricks to arrange ballads and it's not just the regular snake-oil ("5 top-notch tricks the pros DON'T WANT you to know !!!"), these tricks make it very clear that you must know how to choose superstructures and scales to fit the harmony, so the video makes a pretty solid program for students : "if I know enough theory to choose scales to play, and if I practice harmonizing scales in thirds and sixths, then I'll be able to play basically anything that way, effortlessly". This is a very clever teaching technique, and it is so generous of you to give it away for free on youtube. I've already said it last year but I don't mind repeating myself : thank you very much, Gjermund and all of you guys at PopJazzOnline, for those lessons you give away on youtube. This is brillant teaching work.
Such a great video. As someone who hopes to adapt existing melodies to a lounge style (covers) this is exactly what I was looking for. Thankyou for making this content available for everyone online
Wow... Now I know what is cocktail jazz, lounge piano jazz etc.... I must to be hard learn to do this especially my left hand, but many Thanks. I will always watching your others video. Great channel...
I am speechless at your proficiency on the piano and your very generous spirit. That you are willing to share your talent with whomever is amazing but then you top all of that by offering it free of charge. I have always wanted to play jazz but now that I am retired, perhaps along with your excellent videos I can finally see that come to pass. Do you think that mid 60's is too old to learn? Thanks for your kindness of heart and benevolence. By the way you do quite well with your English. Thanks again for everything.
Amazing, I've been toying with more complex (jazzy) chords lately and adding even a 3 note arpeggio up the keyboard immediately adds a new dimension to the music...in 5 minutes. I suppose it was just never explained this plainly - thanks for the video.
Very helpful! And I love that you can use this with any lead sheet. A guy at my work has asked if I would be willing to play some piano at the up coming Christmas party and I intend to use this style. :)
I have been wanting to learn lounge piano since I was a child and there simply was no way to learn it back then. Thank you so much for this, it is so wonderfully made!
Thank you! Agree, I also wanted to learn this as a child. Standing at the shopping mall observing the pianist for hours. However, this is absolutely possible to learn !
Hi Gjermund, you're absolutely amazing! The teaching is very well rounded, and I find it contains information lots of jazz piano teacher might have missed as well. This is useful for both beginners, advanced players, and professionals working as a jazz musician as well. Ps: I can't believe you even put the lounge sound in the background too, it's very thoughtful of you. Great stuffs!
Well done video courses, very nice, you are professional. I am more of a concert pianist and I 've been playing piano on cruise ships since for over 18 years, I am tired of that job, but with information and tutorials like your is good to refresh and learn more about this style which is not my favorite and I am not the best at it. You are really good at this style and I am sure people like you succeed more than me when playing in these settings. On ships I try to be a concert pianist and a cocktail jazz lounge at the same time, but I know and I've been told that I am best at concert piano performances, and for this reason I hate the job as a pianist, and I've been criticized and it affected my reputation and jobs on ships for not putting everything in this style. I had an evolution of self-improvement and other interests as well in my career, and now I believe being a musician is not the best job in the world, is frustrating and boring at time, lots of musicians don't want to be there at their instruments, especially if they are playing what they don't like; I love great composers and art music and concert-style piano arrangments most of the time, then I would play jazz lounge style for 15%, but it seems that in those lounge settings people and management prefer the jazz cocktail lounge and I understand. Thank you for these tutorials.
Here you go. He probably misses this comment. Such a generous heart to share his knowledge with us. www.dropbox.com/s/rio8qnwky7l24md/Cocktail%20For%20Lounge.pdf?dl=0

JAZZ QUESTION! Hi Gjermund,I have a question I hope you would respond regarding adding the thirds while playing melody in octaves...as you show in the Cocktail Jazz Tutorials. JAZZ QUESTION!
Hi Gjermund,I have a question I hope you would respond regarding adding the thirds while playing melody in octaves...as you show in the Cocktail Jazz Tutorials.
When playing a melody adding thirds from the top, on some occasions, the note to be added is an uncomfortable one.
For example: Skylark.
The first chord is Fmaj6 (or F6, directly), and the first note in me melody is a D, the sixth. So when adding the third from the top, you would get a B. But, if you use Bb, it would destroy the Harmony since a 11th is not admitted in a maj7 chord since it would create an unpleasant minor 9th between the major third and the 11th. And, if you choose the B natural, it would be a #11, that is admitted in maj7 chords, but it does not correspond to the first degree, rather it belongs to the fourth diatonic chord (in this case, Bbmaj7#11).
This happens all the time while adding the thirds to the melody, from the top or from the bottom, with different types of chords and not-available tensions.
So the question is...
1) You add the "bad note" to the chord and you don't care
2) You make the note right by using the alteration that allows the available tension, even though it does not correspond to that degree
3) You change the interval, and play a fourth in that case in stead of a third.
Hope you can liberate me from this existencial doubt!!
