    7:34 Actually, king sejong was a very smart person(he memorized an entire book able to say what page a random sentence is in) so he himself didn't have problem using chinese characters. Instead, he worried that most ordinary people were illiterate, so he invented hangul with the most outstanding scholars at that time.

    • @taidordz
      @taidordz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is a little bit stupid, I am pretty sure it is either exaggerated or not a thick book.

    • @tintypemolly
      @tintypemolly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      @@taidordz Maybe that specific story can be exaggerateed but there is no doubt King Sejong had no problem with Chinses characters. Apparently, not only kings but also all nobles in the royal court should have known how to read and write those characters since every document in the royal court was in Chinese. Even the most stupid king was able to read and write them.

    • @sayc.4027
      @sayc.4027 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@taidordz Actually, that's probably not exaggerated at all. King Sejong is known as the most scholastic AND dilligent Korean head of state in the history of the Peninnsula, and in fact it's a famous myth that he even had to cooperate with other scholars to complete Hangeul - it's almost completely Sejeong's solo work.
      And considering the methods of studying back then were drilling the Confucian text over and over until you can recite it half-asleep, completely able to elaborate the thoughts behind it and be able to add a footnote to it... The story's more likely than you think.

    • @janosch6178

      haha anyone watched the drama splash splash love? he's the male lead there

    • @jss2142
      @jss2142 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And there's another myth going on. When the King Sejong started on the project of Hunminjeonum (in modern days, we call Hangul), most scholars were con, since it can be the sign of being idependent of China. So, Hangul was actually created almost by him alone, based on the shape of tongues and Confucian style interpretaion of language. You cannot imagine how clever he was.
      After he finished creating Hangul, many scholars working in Jiphyunjeon had no alternative but to accept it. The King Sejong forced them to make some literature with Hangul and distribute it to his people.
      There are many dualities in history we are missing due to some stupid nationalism. The facts are that the King Sejong was such an intelligent guy and, simultaneously, he did not care his people so much as we are told to believe.

Pick up your dirty laundry!" then five minutes later "No you can't watch that! You are only eight years old!" As a result I could never figure out how old I was when I was a kid.

      East Asian counting system began with 1 before the spread of zero east, so that's most likely why. Also, if you are born at the end of the year (on the traditional calendar of course), the tough luck, you'd be 1 until the new year, then you'll be 2...

      We do use it (kinda) but not officially, on our IDs and our passports we only show our birth date and in government functions stuff we use our official age (the current year minus your birth year, called 实岁 real age). Every time new year comes, you are “one year older” instantly (this age is called 虚岁 “virtual age”) and people treat you as one year older already but we haven’t really grown one year older, but people like to ask both your virtual age and your real age. Different regions in China celebrate birthday in different time like some place celebrate birthday of your “virtual age” some “real age” and that would be way too complicated to explain.

    12:14 South Korea had remarkable development speed, but at the same time, it also gained tremendous cultural lag.
    They torture the opposite people at the same time. Those who can't adapt to new things and those who can't stand old bad customs.
    As a result, you can see that the suicide rates of young people and the elderly are high at the same time.
    Of course, serious generational conflict too.
    This country is very advanced, but it is far from happiness.
    The phrase "I would die (because of some reason) = 죽겠다" or "I can't live. = 못 살겠다." that Koreans often say is not just an idiom.
    Koreans actually often think like that. "I would rather die than endure such dishonor or misery."

      DMZ tour was sad? My DMZ tour from the north side of the border was pretty chill, we got to take pics with the NK soldiers and walk around and take pictures of both the NK side and the other side. From what I've heard the South Koreans are more strict with tourists on their part of the DMZ to avoid "provoking the North Koreans", yet the North Koreans were ironically pretty lenient on my tour group.
