Never been. But my Grandfather spent some time there in the early 1950s. Landed in Wonsan and took a scenic tour all the way up to the Chosin Reservoir where he met the locals along with 100,000 Chinese that were also visiting the area. I don't think he would've recommended DPRK, but he always spoke highly of South Korea and the people he "worked" with from there! Thanks for another fun episode Barbs!
Well, as Colombian, I try to be very friendly so I tried to break the ice with some questions and start a conversation, but they always replied with cold answers like they didn't want to talk (or maybe they were not allowed to?). I know some words in Korean so i tried to make them correct my pronunciation and at that point it seem I finally gain their trust, but then one of them commented that Colombia fought for the South Korean side during the Korean War and well.. that was it :S
The division of Korea in many ways is similar to the division of Germany from 1949-1990. For example neither of them referred to each other in terms of their compass direction (they didn't refer to each other as East or West Germany, instead, being either the Federal Republic of Germany, Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or the German Democratic Republic, Deutsche Demokratische Republik)
Why do they even learn it in schools? Unless it's to prepare pupils to become diplomats or to translate English to Korean in some external political situations, I don't see what's the point when the country is locked from the rest of the world

Well it makes sense as a communist country's ideology is that the people (workers) are the common owners of the country, the land, the government, etc. Thus they are ''democratic'' in the sense that the people are the common leaders of the nations.... We all know that most ''communist'' nations have an almost 100% score at becoming ruthless dictatorships under megalomaniacs, but that's just in practice.
Correction: China also calls "Sea of Japan" but not "East Sea." In China, "East Sea" refers to East China Sea, the sea between Jeju Island, Ryukyu Island and the East Coast of China. As far as I know, North Korea will call the East China Sea to "South Sea".
I'm not sure Wikipedia can be a strong source or not. But here's the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Japan. On the right side it labels the Chinese name of "Sea of Japan", literally means sea of Japan, the characters very different from Korean Hanja. You can use a translate tool to confirm that. What's more, just use common sense to think about that: It's very wired for Chinese do not call East China Sea as "East Sea", but call a sea on the east side of Korean Peninsula as "East Sea".
Of course, it also depends on whether if China is being chummy with Japan or not. If ties are strained, you can bet China will say "East Sea" to stoke nationalist tensions, but if things are cool, China more or less will just let the issue slide.
3:35 ~ 3:40 the reason isn’t that simple. If timezones are applyed correctly to each country, 12 o’clock should be the time when the sunlight perpendiculary meets the surface area your country is on. To put it easier, at 12 PM the sun should be directly above your head. For political & historical reasons, South Korea(seoul) follows Japan(tokyo)’s timezone. But as you can see on the map, seoul is further west to tokyo. Because of that, the sun doesn’t meet the land perpendiculary at 12 in seoul. It actually does at 12:30PM. So South Korea uses a timezone that is 30 minutes earlier than what is should be. North korea is actually using a ‘correct’ timezone. P.S (edit) - north korea now uses the same timezone as south korea
We do a similar thing here in the state of South Australia, where the time zone is UTC+9:30, due to the capital city Adelaide being closer to the eastern border with New South Wales and Victoria.

I am Chinese, and we never call the sea east of the peninsular "East Sea", we call it "Sea of Japan" (In fact, I got corrected by my Korean friends several times). In China, "East sea" is to refer to the East China Sea, which is the waters between China and Ryukyu Islands of Japan

@@wolfxx1155 how the NK news reporter reads is how people used to announce info during the kingdom periods. Like when saying some thing "the king is arriving", they would say is like that.
For the international relations I've heard the north koreans like Germany quite a lot. Both countries host embassies, it is super easy for Germans to book trips to NK if they want and if you are lucky the "guide" even speaks German since a considerable amount of north koreans studied in the GDR
Yeah but American General McArthur was a bit of an idiot and went beyond his UN mandate when he pushed NK past the 38th parralel and continued to invade the North even after he'd expelled them from the south. As western coalition forces pushed the north Koreans back they approached the Yalu river border with China in the North. Mao was terrified that McArthur might continue over the border into China and overthrown his communist PRC regime, especially as he was threatening to use nuclear weapons against China. As a result he sent unofficial "volenteers" to assist NK. After a few years a stalemate was reached roughly around the original 38th parallel border, so they just gave up, kept Korea split, and there's been relative peace ever since.
Korea would have been unified if the US stayed out of the war too.. What's your point? He did mention that combined Chinese and USSR forces saved the Juche system and North Korea, just like the combined forces of the US and the UN saved the South Korean system
All I'm saying is an important fact is absent in the timeline presented in the video. It's not like the North Koreans pushed back all by themselves. And it's obvious the region would be better off if China didn't intervene.
3:40 That is how India is too, not at a perfect hour in a time zone! Also, North Korea's best friend, China is a country that needs to use 5 time zones, but they are super weird and they use only one!!! That seems crazy!

4) Cuba has been an important friend state of the North Korea.

There is at least a lot of communication between East and West Germany, but there is no communication between North Korea and South Korea

There has never been a communist country. Only socialist ones
They love oxymorons
Am I the only one to notice that communist country’s fall do to economic problems
All kinds of countries do that. In fact, most countries that don't have a king or queen and are officially called ''Kingdom of -- '' do that.

Correction: China also calls "Sea of Japan" but not "East Sea." In China, "East Sea" refers to East China Sea, the sea between Jeju Island, Ryukyu Island and the East Coast of China. As far as I know, North Korea will call the East China Sea to "South Sea".
tomohiro sou Source?
I'm Chinese and I confirm that, so I guess I'm the 'Source'.
Tf

P.S (edit) - north korea now uses the same timezone as south korea
wow, thanks for the detailed explanation
We do a similar thing here in the state of South Australia, where the time zone is UTC+9:30, due to the capital city Adelaide being closer to the eastern border with New South Wales and Victoria.

I am Chinese, and we never call the sea east of the peninsular "East Sea", we call it "Sea of Japan" (In fact, I got corrected by my Korean friends several times). In China, "East sea" is to refer to the East China Sea, which is the waters between China and Ryukyu Islands of Japan
Same for Russians - Японское море, Japanese sea

As long as Trump doesn't provoke them by flying a strategic bomber over their land again.

You didn't mention China's part in the Korean War, which is really the most important part. Korea would have been unified of they stayed out of it.
And the PRC and the Soviet Union weren't that stupid as to let the US have troops stationed right next to their borders.
India will show the power and balance in Asia
