- This video covers how to remove the upper intake plenum on a naturally aspirated (non turbo) 3.5l Ford F150. This is intended for guidance purposes only! Shift Heads are NOT responsible for any damages to your vehicle. Seek Professional assistance before performing repairs on your vehicle.
Landon is performing a spark plug change on his F150 this week, and as he normally does, he decided to research how to remove the upper intake plenum as its in the way of the passenger side plugs and coils. Since he couldn't find any videos that covered it, he decided to do a quick instructional on how to remove it. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I think the reason there are so few videos on the 3.5NA is there is seldom a need to work on them. I just passed 200k on mine and installed the second set of spark plugs. Didn't need to but I thought it might be a good idea. In my opinion, this is one of the best engines ever. Just a tad over 210 CI and it pulls like a 400 cube engine. I've maxed this thing out on many occasions pulling heavy loads clear across the country and it does it in stride. Who needs those turbos? Two sets of plugs, and oil changes when the truck tells me it's time, usually around 8000 miles and that's it. It still runs smooth and doesn't burn a drop of oil. Just a great engine in a great truck. But thanks for the video. Good job.
The ecoboost is nothing but a pig with lipstick. You don't need it. First thing I did when I looked at it was say, "no way" and I bought the regular aspirated. For all the ecoboost trucks I see sitting at the side of the road, I think my decision was 100%.
Great video!! Thght I was the only one driving a non eco!! Great truck when you don't necessarily need the power.. gets me from point A to B. Thnx!!
Great video for non eco 3.5 owners who need to do plugs. Thank YOu!!!
Thank you so much! I was beginning to think that I had the only 3.5l that wasn't an EcoBoost. You helped me a ton!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video that helped me change the spark plugs on my 2017 3.5 Flex fuel F150. My only suggestion is that when you reinstall the plenum that you torque the 7 bolts in proper sequence with 89 inch pounds of torque plus an additional 45 degree turn to each bolt. The bolt tightening sequence can be found on the Ford Truck users group. The only problem I encountered was when the rubber boot on one of the coils broke off as I was pulling it out. It took me quiet a while to get the rubber piece loosened from the plug so I could extract it. Some videos recommend that you replace all of the rubber boots when replacing plugs and it might be worth it if you plan to drive another 100K miles and need to change the plugs again. Thanks again for the video.
That is definitely good advice to use the proper torque sequence. As stated in the video though, I dont normally do tutorials or "how-to" type of stuff. If I did, I would definitely include torque specs, sequences, etc; glad you enjoyed it, and glad it was able to help you!
Thanks, greatly appreciated!
Saved my bacon. Thanks for the video. I don’t think I could’ve figured it out without you.
Glad it was helpful!
I have a 2015 with the 3.5 n/a 130k and it’s got a pretty noticeable ticking sound that matches rpm but is definitely more noticeable at idle I was planning to check the plugs this definitely helped motivate me to do it
Glad it could give you some motivation! However, your ticking noise might not be your plugs. Just a fair warning!
I couldn't find the correct 3.5 either......thanks you made it easy
Likewise, I didn’t find any naturally aspirated videos until yours. Much gratitude for the tutorial especially since it’s not your normal practice. Very very helpful video. Thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Omg ! So true , sick of finding ecoboost videos. Thank you for this video.
Great, simple video. I was looking for the same reason you were. That sneaky little bolt in the back was holding me up. Hope my mileage comes back up after new plugs. 👍
Oh man! Thank you so much. Every time I look for videos on TH-cam or Google I get ecoboost vids. This is a HUGE help man thank you
That is exactly why I made the video. I'm not a fan of making tutorial videos, but I figured this one would be helpful, and very straightforward.
Best video ever … all I could see myself was 3.5 eco boost .. great video ….
Thank you. Someone finally took the time to help a weekend wrencher with the regular 3.5L.
Good lookin shift head.
Glad we could help! However, this is pretty much the extent of anything remotely educational on our channel! 😆
Oh my god.THANK YOU. I have been trying to figure out how to get to those for a few weeks. Idk much about working on trucks, and this was too intimidating. You could also add "non Ecoboost" in the description to help others find it. for someone that doesnt know much about cars, i wasnt sure if "non turbo" applied to my truck or not
You are very welcome! We don't really do videos explaining how to fix things. I just saw a lack of instructional videos to do basic maintenance on the non-ecoboost engines in these trucks.
Much obliged sir. Shame about the commercial sized amounts of gaskets they make us buy tho
I look at it this way, I now have spares for future endeavors that may arise on this truck. Lol
My 2016 na is 2 wheel drive, regular cab, short box with the 3.73 and lt tires.
It is fun in the city!
Kudos for this great video. I was looking at the plug change thinking how easy it would be until I saw the one plug that the imbecile engineers covered with the plenum. The quote from a ford dealer was 5 hours and $780 CAD. It looks like you went through the agony and this is a comprehensive demo on how to save that green. One note to all the automotive engine design engineers out there is that I despise coil packs and plugs that are stuffed in a tunnel through the intake manifold. Do not do that. Bring back the days of exposed spark plugs as in pre-2000 engines so a job like this can take the 15 minutes that it should.
Took me about 2 hours to get this done. So 5 hours of labor is a very high estimate. Just be sure to change your gaskets to avoid any trouble down the road with vacuum leaks!
@shift-heads1686 yeah I tell the ones I do also the same.. use that saying since we are in here we can or would recommend to charge this etc.. most time they do it u let them know hey if you don't and down the road give you problems you don't want to do this again.. just do it once get it all and move on lol
Thank you! Saved me a bunch of time trying to figure it out. Sucks that everything online is only for the 3.5L ecoboost.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the video
Bro. Thank you so much. I was searching for a non echo boost you made it look pretty easy. Love all the little tips to. And I could hear and understand you. Wondering how long it took you. To do. Well that's what I'm doing 1st thing in the morning. Hopefully I can get to work around lunch. Thanks again my friend
Took me about an hour and a half. But I've got years of experience. Plan for at least 2 hours, and take your time!
Thank you!!
When Ford merged with Mazda back years ago....back in my hayday...things went crazy on there engines...was A.S.E. certified from mid 90,s till 2013 were i went on my own....Hard to beat a Chevy v-8.
Thanks for video
I broke a clip on one of those vacuum line. Ended up using a old radiator hose as a replacement and have no problems. Over 5k milss so far
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you !!!!!!!!
Thanks bud 🙏
You experience the "placebo effect" too? Why do they seem to run better after the car wash ? Good video !!!
Which spark plugs did you use? Sp-580 or sp-534? And what would be the difference?
Also should I just get the spark plugs or replace the coils as well? 2015 XL f150 NA with 88k miles
Thanks!
I believe I used SP520, and I'm not sure about the difference. I would recommend replacing the coils as well, but use only Motorcraft coils.
Hey I have a 2015 3.5 non eco boost and I’m trying to find the cam position sensor b bank 1. I’ve seen diagrams of it being on top of the valve cover on the passenger side. Is that where it’s located?
Cam sensors are actually on the rear (towards the firewall) on the head. There are 2 per head. Make sure you replace the correct one. If you're not sure, I would replace all 4.
Tnx
Is there a gasket to replace once the intake is removed , that place where we are to cover the intake holes ? Thanks from Texas
Yes, there is a gasket. Its the blue one in the video. Depending on what gasket set you order, it may be a different color. And I say gasket kit, because you can't buy that gasket by itself, you can only get it in a kit, unfortunately.
@@shift-heads1686 cool 😎Thank you very much for your reply.
My gasket was in good shape still protruding like it should. So the plug change was successful. My 2016 F-150 xlt super crew cab is running so much smoother at 60k now
Great video, was looking for the same reason as you! Is there a gasket under the plenum or no?
Yes, there is a gasket.
@@shift-heads1686 thanks! Ugh should have ordered one with the plugs this morning 😂
Hey I have a 16 f150 3.5 non eco and I’ve been leaking oil slowly out of those two plug / censors whatever they are on the front of either sides of the engine. Do you know what they are.
On the Valve Covers?
Theyre valve covers your gasket might be blown
I got the same problem, how you did to resolve that?
Heeeel yeah
How much did the spark plugs/ gasket cost?
Can't remember off the top of my head exactly, but I know it was under $100.
How long did it take to complete the job
Took me about an hour and a half.
Spark plug #?
Sp520ax (0.051") Motorcraft
All that, to get to the spark plugs. All day job. But, thanks.
Actually got it done in 2 hours...
@shift-heads1686 Mine would have been a two hour job, except for a broken bolt in the very back of the manifold. Currently pulling the lower manifold to get to it easier 😅
@@rapTorfx4 i didnt it friday. Youre right, took about 2 hours. This video made my job easy easy.
@@rapTorfx4
Ouch! That's some rotten luck, bro!
