I cut up plastic bottles as my plastic backing, such as smart water bottles or 2 liter bottles. The plastic already has a curve to it and If I need a taller pole I will just overlap the the plastic putting the lower plastic over top of the upper plastic so the water doesn't drip out the back. I have a very difficult time finding suitable plastic sheets here in the U.S. and it's recycling 😊 One other thing I love is, I have a hand drill that I use an attachable tin snips to cut my wire, makes the processes much faster and much less painful 😊
I like to use terracotta pots in our plants. I think they look much better and keep plants healthier. Does anyone have ideas how to use these D-shaped poles in terracotta pots?
Great video, Emma. I was wondering how to make these on my own. You’re so thorough when you are explaining and teaching. Love that you’re always willing to go above and beyond in sharing your tips and tricks. You’re awesome. Thanks again, Emma! 🫶🏼🪴♥️
I’m watching 1 year after your video, so grateful I’ve found this, I’m uk based and been trouble finding the right supply’s, also your step by step guide is awesome, thank you for sharing ❤
Can get giant sheets of free vinyl better quality out of trash LCD TVs. Made a privacy greenhouse box with one, It refracts the light into rainbows and you cant tell whats inside perfectly by looking at it. Looks great. Also has a solid white sheet in every TV, free 70" white background perfect for a photo staging
Finally someone else is making these! I’ve been DIYing these poles for ages and I’m obsessed with them because the work so damn well *and* you can see the roots!
@@GoodGrowing I’m currently working in a prototype for moss poles that are cool shapes (think squiggly poles, circular “wreath” like poles etc.). I’m still working out the logistics of water distribution throughout the pole, but it’s looking like my latest idea might just work! Moss poles are too much fun 😂

Thank you Emma for the great video, as always! This is one of the most helpful moss pole video I’ve watched (and I’ve watched a lot in the past couple weeks to prep for my first moss pole). I really appreciate that this video answered a question that I had but couldn’t find answers for: since people tend to need to water moss pole more often than they do substrate, how do I keep moss pole moist while not overwatering my substrate? The orchid bark filling bottom is super enlightening and I’ll do that to keep it well draining!
Thank you for this tutorial! ❤️ I've been gathering courage to try and make these and this may be just what I needed to take the first step! Sooo many of my plants would benefit and I'd really love to see some larger leafs from them.. 😊
Hello, thank you for sharing this video, I have been researching many other videos on these "D" shaped moss poles, but I'm very impressed by you using clear plastic rather than opaque white. I'll be going to the store for the clear plastic. My next question is? The cost of this wire mesh, as I'm trying to keep the cost down, being I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income. If you have any suggestions plz feel free to advise me, keep making your videos, I love learning new things especially for the growth of my plants, ❤❤❤
I don’t remember the wire mesh being particularly expensive but you get A LOT of it on a roll, so might be worth banding with some fellow plant parents and going in on some together
Brilliant video. I just made 1 of these straight after watching so thank you Emma. I found folding the plastic over u can cut the holes for each side together if that makes sense … 🤔🫶🌱
It's like you read my mind, I was just searching for d shaped moss poles and wondering whether I should just make my own. P.s. where did you get your cool monstera (Metallica style) t shirt from? I see you wear it in other videos and I love it.
Hehe yeah it’s defo cheaper to make them yourself, just takes a bit more work Also the shirt is from tropics narcotics who have several like that and they’re amazing quality
Thanks for showing us your DIY method :) I have a question, I use wormcastings and organic fertilizer for my plants soil, can I also use organic fertilizer to water the moss pole or will that mold?
That actually looks doable! 😄 Is it worth making these if you know you won't be able to keep them super moist? I don't have a cabinet and it gets pretty dry in summer here in Madrid, so I just know it's not realistic. I'm wondering if they're still better for the plant than coir poles if they're not kept consistently moist.
Yeah it’s actually really easy to make. And keeping them moist isn’t that bad here in the UK I put a plastic cup with holes on the top of the pole and fill that with water every few days. The poles don’t need to stay super wet and as long as they don’t fully dry out tooooo often it should be fine. With the plastic back the moisture stays pretty well and the insides of the poles hold water better
Hobbies intersecting here: rolls of cake collar acetate will work for smaller poles. It tends to be 125-150 microns. It comes in different widths and the continuous length makes it easy to customize with less waste.
One other thing...I find that with the d shaped poles, the entire pot seems to tip backwards because of the weight of the moss being on one side of the pot. What are some ways I could prevent this other than putting my pot in a big pot filled with river rocks 😂
I have my dubia on one like this now. I've seen them very happy on either, but mine is a bit meh tbh, thats a me problem though not a support problem 😂
Funny how life works out sometimes. I have just spent the last 2 hours trying to make one of these and just couldn’t do it for love or money! 😢. Will again tomorrow cause it’s given me the hump now😂 💚
@@GoodGrowing yes thank you finally worked it out and made 6 on the trot. Felt so proud of myself 🤣 Just got to remember how I did it and make at least another six 🥴
I've made smaller poles just like this using plastic cutting mats from dollar tree and plastic chicken wire mesh I got from Lowes or home Depot. I'm actually looking into making bigger/sturdier ones for my bigger pothos and was thinking o could possibly use some vinyl fr Joann's Fabrics! They sell many different gauges, some that's super thick! I'm going to experiment over the holiday 😊
My bestie and I made this last time she stayed the night! I think the plastic sheet I got is a little weak so I had to support with stakes. Do you ever get mold on your moss? I’ve been spritzing with hydrogen peroxide when I notice it which seems to be working. I think I got mold because for some reason I thought it’d be a good idea to use mosquito bit water 🙄 lol.
Omg best sleepover activity! And yeah some plastics are a bit too thin but as long as the stakes work to help hold it up, you’re golden! I’ve not had any issues with mould on my moss and I’ve used mosquito bit water on them before 🤷🏻♀️ so not too sure what’s going on there. But as long as the hydrogen peroxide is working you should be fine
@@GoodGrowing congrats on your engagement!! I just watched the video of Joe describing plants and LOVED it lol. I’m looking for the other video you guys are talking about 😂
Do you mean use a moss pole in pon or use pon in a moss pole? I use poles in all my semi hydro set ups. No different than with soil. As far as using pon in a moss pole, do not recommend. It’s too heavy and makes a mess.
Same as what the other person said. I have plants in pon with moss poles just fine, just make sure the moss doesn’t go down into the water reservoir as you risk it getting mouldy. I wouldn’t put pon in the pole part though
I think coir releases a lot of potassium salts? May want to check it doesn't impact the NPK you need. Also you would need chunkier parts so that it doesn't fall through the holes. That is more airy in that case, so it would dry up very quickly. Also spagnum moss holds x20 of it's own weight in water, it's very retentive (although awfully crispy when it dries up!). In comparison, coir won't hold anywhere near as much water. The roots of a plant can easily push into moist moss, but coir chunks are denser and may be a little harder for finer roots to get into at first. I'm of the opinion that the plant would sense more humidity to encourage it to root, from moss, than from coir chunks that would dry up quicker too
The video es very well edited but the voice is quite nasty. How do you care your voice? First being aware that it exists and later on wondering how you can improve it (thousands of videos in the internet of course). Good luck fellow planter!
Can you do a video on how to extend these moss poles taller?
Just poke in 2-3 chopsticks on the top of the koss pole and add another moss pole on the top

I’ve heard that works really well too!
GENIUS!
Omg good Idea. Would love to see how you did that.
Can you show a picture of this?
Quick tip: If you cut the wire mesh in the middle of the square you get two end wires to fold back and viola no sharp pointy edges
