Fern My moss poles are like your wire ones but 5-6 feet tall and I take a 1/2” PVC pipe and drill 6-8 tiny holes in the pipe and then put my moss on the wire around the pole. Then I water down the pole. When we went on a cruise last summer I was gone 10 days with my poles out in the Texas summer heat and they did amazing. The pipes slowly release the water through the holes for about 10-12 days saving me having to water as much. I teach moss pole making with this technique. Best wishes. 💚💚💚
Having your Florida ghost floating off your shelf in the background (which I never noticed until this video tbf) IS A WHOLE MOOD. What an awesome idea!!
Always smile when you talk about how expensive spagnum moss is because I live in N Z and we can just drive a couple of miles out of town and pick our own. Wish I could send you some.
A fun project is to actually find a nice tree branch outside, around 60cm or higher, a bit sturdy and just take it home, bleach clean it and add wood varnish and then top it off with high-gloss wood lacquer. And use that bad boy as a pole for your plants. The more wonky the more fun way for plants to grow!
We go hiking and find cool branches that have fallen on the ground or when we’re chopping up our overgrown wisteria. I find the ones with a lot of bends and twists. I plant it to the base of my climbers and use that for stability. I like my plants to look as natural as possible. I don’t think I can achieve that with moss poles of any kind. Thanks, Fern for saying that we can do whatever we want. I love your openness, perspective, and your insight on your personal journey. Say your truth, girl! I’m subscribing right now after this one video. Keep up the great work!❤
Ooooooo learning so much. I would describe the plank look as the farmhouse aesthetic. A pipe would be industrial. I think a literal branch would look cool which is more fairy core and foresty, which is my aesthetic
True, there are no rules to what kind of moss pole you use. I am currently using a long stick fallen from a tree to grow my Piper - Crocatum at the moment. I have attached it with plant clips. I also have a small Philodendron - Tortem. Thanks for the tip of growing it on a bamboo pole. Love the old moss pole video clip. Shows the evolution of moss poling and the Fern look!!! 🥰
aww shout out to past Fern! I like this video 💕 reflecting on mistakes is very helpful for us! Funny how I've been watching for so long, I didn't even realize what you used to do with moss poles! Wrapping the cuttings around 😅
I LOVE watching moss pole videos even though I use exclusively plants because I know I won't keep up on the watering 🤣 thank you for putting this out!! 💚
This is so helpful. Omg you really told us so much value about these pole so we have a smooth road forward. I thank you so much. Wish we lived closer as I could give you some cutting to say thank you for your time. I’m in Ontario. Cheers!
i honestly appreciate the fact that’s you’ve been mixing up the longer videos with shorter videos! sometimes i want to watch the hour long videos but other times i just want something short you know? 🤣🤣
Best addition to my moss pole routine has been a rechargeable battery powered sprayer that I can use to wet the pole and also can spray down the outside of a dry pole so the outer moss isn't hydrophobic and then I can water from the top much more effectively. Love all of your tips!
I make moss poles using plastic mesh and after adding a stake I don't have problems with it being too flimsy. I also recently bought a pole for plants made out of potatoes, it's very rough and hard. I found it by accident in Leroy Merlin. It's interesting and I'm excited to see how it works.
I gave up on moss poles pretty early on. Where I am it's just too expensive to get the moss and the maintenance/maintenance costs was just too much for me. I know I would probably get more benefits growth wise but it's just not feasible for me. Now I just use dead, gnarly and twisty branches that I sand down smooth(or leave as is). It just gives this really natural/organic look, like my plants are just growing up a tree/across a branch. I'd love to get some terrarium decor like hollowed out tree trunks and such aswell at some point for them to climb on. These are good options imo if you use stakes and don't want just a straight stick.
When I had my Splendid, I just took a bunch of cuttings and let them trail like a pothos 😅 it never got leaves bigger than my hand, but it never stopped growing
I don’t use moss poles… and I’m here watching! I stake all my climbers and monsteras. For multiple reasons, moss poles aren’t an option for my house. But staking works great. I appreciate you including that method in your video.
I have been making my own wire mesh moss poles but finally tried the Rousseau ones. I love them so much. I just wish they came in a wider size. I’ve considered trying two, side by side. And I very much agree that it’s better to put plants on a pole when they are small.
I just found precut wire poles on amazon. I ordered a pack of 6 with some moss to give this a try. I didn't have much money to buy a roll of hardware cloth when I first started so I used Jeff's advice and used planks. But then I didn't have any wood and it was really expensive at that time, nor did I have any of my kids beds to take apart, LOL. But I did have left over recycled barn wood from a shelving project I did a few years ago and used them!! I loved the look but I am not having much success getting the plants to actually climb them.
Pre-cut wire poles sound like a great option, the cutting is such a hassle. I used packing tape to stick my plants to the plank until they rooted on to them. Hope you have more luck soon!
While you were describing growing 360 around the metal one, I was imagining you placing one just to the left of your Ikea begonia greenhouse. If you have the room there, you could see the plants from all sides! How cool would that be 💚
I use the wire mesh poles but slide a 3”x36”plastic strip of translucent, heavy duty, ribbed drawer liner down the inside back and then add moss. Also I leave out 2” of moss at the top and drop in a clear plastic Solo cup with 2 tiny holes in the bottom. I just fill it up and it slowly drains into the pole. Super easy😊
great content! I use a clear plastic cup, like the solo ones…..put one hole in the bottom and set on top. I wish it was a little bit more esthetic BUT it’s so easy to walk around just filling up the cups. works great 😂❤
.. I did that too, until one day I was thinking I had to find an easier way.. Then I remembered all the water bottles that I had kept for recycling.. A 500 ml bottle works perfectly for a 90 cm tall moss pole..
I water my moss poles every 1.5-2 weeks, but I do a thorough drenching at the kitchen sink. I also let them dry out a little bit more. Haven't had any issues so far. 🤞 I probably am trading off optimal growth speed with my lazier watering schedule, but I found moss poles way more doable that way. Also, big advocate for closed backs too! So much easier!
I'd only be concerned your roots might get dry rot if its getting “crunchy”.. My humidity is fairly high so mine don't dry out too quickly.. I've seen people do a self watering type thing and they put a bottle on top with small holes and that's probably perfect fit a lazier approach too but they'd stay moist for you!
I love moss poles. I have multiple of them. Am I consistent with watering them? No. But do I love the concept? Yes. 😂 I do have my chiapense on a pole (that I actually water consistently lol) and she is absolutely mASSIVE. Gotta chop and extend asap but I’m honestly scared lol
Great! I love your presentation ' cause you look so natural and real, and be honest and tell us your mistakes and what works for you is amazing..I really appreciated it..I really enjoy it.... Thanks ' cause I have a monstera adansonii that I have to put it like this one in plastic .....thank you for your great advice about adansonii ....I love bamboo steak too
Ding, ding, ding! I’ve had one question about watering the poles: fertilized water or not. You answered that question so THANK YOU. I love my moss poles and so far I’m happy. 🎉
Hi Fern! I have my Adansonii growing up a simple stick from the yard, LOL. She is just a baby though, going to have to switch it up when she gets to be a big girl! Love your videos, we need to see more of olive ☺
great video as always! do you think a philodendron majestic would grow well on a plank/stake? yours always look so gorgeous on poles so i wasn’t sure if they would size up with another medium.
Hi plant bestie Fern! Great video as always. 😊 Question for you unrelated to this video but do you have a video about Anthurium Faustino's Giant or can you please make one? Any tips for its care would be appreciated!
Right now I am one that doesn’t want a Moss pole, but doesn’t mean I won’t at some point. Currently I use Twigs for supporting my larger plants they’re cool and stackable. I got them at Amazon.
I wish I saw this video sooner!! I spent hours hydrating and fluffing "premium" moss I got off Amazon for my first moss poles only to find it has a funky smell. (It was the Legigo brand if anyone's wondering, and their coco coir also has an unbearable chemical smell, so I would not at all recommend that brand!) I want to set my plants up for success, so I'm definitely going to use your recommendations instead. Thanks for the great info! Also, is there a reason you don't use bottles with holes in the cap (or a similar method) to water your moss poles?
Hey Fern, I enjoyed this video and enjoyed the throwbacks ! I've heard people say that mosspoles encourage fungus gnats... do you use mosquito bitz water for watering, or have you never had that problem ? Really interesting content, many thanks xx
i really like this video format! little bit shorter and having a defined subject. i mean i also love all your other videos too but i don't have a lot of time so i usually end up just watching half and i got like a million tabs open of half watched fern videos lmao IT'S NOT MY ATTENTION SPAN I SWEAR 💚💚💚
helloo! ive been really enjoying your videos, while getting into the whole plant world😊 on a completely unrelated note, can i ask you where this pink shirt is from? im in love with the relaxed look and the sleevess🤩
Thank you so much! This shirt is from Urban Outfitters, but sadly they don't sell them anymore :( I wanted to get more colours! Thank you for watching & welcome to the wonderful world of plants :D
I wonder if you could use like a 8ml polyurethane sheeting on the back inside of the moss pole while building it to lock in the moisture from the back? Trying this next.
Hi Fern, I love your videos. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences. I’m new to plants and have a Jose buono. Would that work well on a moss pole?
Hi Fern I’d love to get your advice…I decided to dip my toe into the moss pole world by experimenting with some small offshoots from my monstera deliciousa and planted 3 of them. I made my own plastic back and wire front moss pole and attached the rooted cuttings and their aerial root nubs have grown into the pole. The weird thing is that one of those thick roots has grown upward and is now sticking out of the moss but the vines have not reached that height yet. Should I continue to fill the pole to cover that root or let it be an upward aerial root? And will other smaller type roots develop from those vines and root into the pole? Thank you for your help with this. 20:20
What's your opinion on store bought mosspoles? I currently use one for one of my plants and like the look of that combination. For me it's better than using just a stake or plank.😊
Hi Fern! I’m getting into moss poles recently so this video came just in time:) what kind of soil do you use for your moss poles? That information would be super helpful☺️
Hey! That’s awesome :) my preference is the Molly’s Aroid Mix, but when I’m out of that I do a simple DIY mix of soil (promix HP), orchid bark, & perlite! Hope that helps - thanks for watching.
I enjoyed the video. My question is, if a moss pole dries out completely, is it just ruined? Should it be taken apart and redone with new moss? I am thinking that whatever roots were in the pole are dead at this point? The plant still looks great though.
sis i have question not related to this video that is I receive a blueberry plant and it had a note on it saying to keep it in shade for 7 days before repotting so what does it mean should i keep it indoors or keep it outside just keep it where sunlight dont reach all day? please help ;-;
I used cedar because it’s more rot resistant. It’s the only type I’ve used, but I know others have used all types. I mentioned Jeff from Everything Plants and I’m pretty sure he’s using wood slats from an old bedframe :) so I’d just use whatever you can find!
Hi Fern, do the Rousseau poles ship from the USA to Canada? With exchange and shipping do you think its more affordable to make your own or is it about the same cost wise with the DIY poles.
I don’t currently have any of them in use, but I think they’re great and super handy if you don’t plan on doing chop & extend! You can’t really remove the roots off of them so they don’t work well for propagating.
Hi! My name is Cassie and I’ve recently have started trying out moss poles. As of recently my main issue is mold growth on my poles like white fuzzy mold. I’m expecting some more quality moss in the mail soon to see if that helps me out. I started turning my ceiling fan on to improve air circulation but if there’s any tips for this issue is greatly appreciated!
I have a Monstera Adansonii that I bought that was put on a plank, but has outgrown the plank and I tried to put a moss pole attached to the plank but now I think I have to repot it. What’s your suggestion should I just carefully remove the mature part of the plant that’s attached with staples to the plank and just create a new moss pole in a bigger pot when I repotpot it, this will be my first time doing this, any suggestions
I'm just getting into poles and only have one so far which is doing good. Do you have a Facebook page for your followers? If not I suggest you get one, that way we can share pictures with you there. 😊

Fern you are truly amazing!!! Toronto .
Yessss! This 💯!
omg throwback to the iconic fern glitch video whilst making the first moss pole 😂 what a time 🌿
HAHHAHA
Yesss that video is legendary 😂😂
Hi Fern, I don’t have any moss poles and probably won’t ever have any, but I’d never miss one of your videos. 🪴
I love the look of your florida ghost hanging up high - it's a show stopper and deserves to be highlighted like that, just wow!
Yes I’m going this with my Florida ghost now and it’s so cool!!
Me too

I put a bunch of begonia cuttings in a clear, glass teapot with perlite at the bottom. Such a low maintenance way to have a begonia and looks cute af

I have a philodendron golden dragon that grows similar to your florida ghost and i love how crazy it is! its like a piece of art
That plant growing down your cabinet is soooo cool
Just stopped by to say, your hair looks great
OMG! I’m literally about to make my first one! This is the best timing ever! 🎉
Oh that is amazing!! Good luck! :)
I like that you mentioned growing up a stake. Ive been hemming and hawing about the same thing but your spectulation confirmed my suspicion
I agree with you. It is so hard to say it’s a one size fits all thing!
Love this! I love the clear back plastic poles. I use aquarium water for my poles. The plants loooooove fish poop 😅
We have outdoor contained ponds. Can I use the water to fertilize my indoor plants?
Just starting to use a few moss poles!! Thanks for the helpful info!!❤😊

Good morning and Happy Birthday Fern!!🎉
When I had my Splendid, I just took a bunch of cuttings and let them trail like a pothos 😅 it never got leaves bigger than my hand, but it never stopped growing
I love that!
I just picked up a majestic and el choco red and had a ton of questions about poles so thank you for sharing this video!
I have a micans and splendid on the wire pole....love it

Ohh I think I saw him combine two of them as an experiment on instagram 👀
I really needed this video!!!
perfect!! glad to hear that :) enjoy!
Your tordum is really growing. I love it. It's on my wish list.
The channel leafy luster did a video where she let a monstera andansonii climb on a piece of a tree. It looks soo good!
Fern coming through with a video while I pack! Ok! ❤🎉
Happy early Birthday btw!
HIII! i love your videos! i really want a moss pole on my plants so this helped!
While you were describing growing 360 around the metal one, I was imagining you placing one just to the left of your Ikea begonia greenhouse. If you have the room there, you could see the plants from all sides! How cool would that be 💚
Just bought the Rousseau moss poles w/ your discount code. Thank you!
Super easy😊
Ohhh I love that cup idea! I may have to try that 👀 thanks for sharing
great content!

Ding, ding, ding! I’ve had one question about watering the poles: fertilized water or not. You answered that question so THANK YOU. I love my moss poles and so far I’m happy. 🎉
Awe so glad it was helpful!! Thank you for watching 😊🌿
Moss pole top tip! Use flush cut cutters. They make a perfect clean cut flush with the surface so no need to bend the sharp edges back.
Ohh that would be handy indeed 👀
Hi Fern! I have my Adansonii growing up a simple stick from the yard, LOL. She is just a baby though, going to have to switch it up when she gets to be a big girl! Love your videos, we need to see more of olive ☺
Oh that is awesome! If it works it works 👏 I’ll have to feature Olive again soon, she’s always cozy in bed 😂
Thank you so much! That was a great video, very helpful. And btw ur eyes are really pretty😊
thank you :)
🌿💜💫 great content, per usual Fern !
Thank you 🙌😊
great video as always! do you think a philodendron majestic would grow well on a plank/stake? yours always look so gorgeous on poles so i wasn’t sure if they would size up with another medium.
honestly I think it would size up fine as long as it's getting ample light and being fertilized :)
@@wildfern oh great! thank you for the reply, you’ve definitely influenced me to get one🥰

I’m wanting to try a moss pole for my Silver Sword and Camposportuanum soon! I think one of my local stores has closed back poles I can try

Thank you for sharing! I was just curious if you've ever used new Zealand tree fern fiber instead of moss?
Nope, I haven’t! Tree fern is too expensive 😅
I love your shirt!
I make my plastic closed back poles out of binding covers and cut them on my cricut machine so they are all uniform
Wohoo first! MOSS POLES LETS GO!
😁😁😁
I enjoyed the video. My question is, if a moss pole dries out completely, is it just ruined? Should it be taken apart and redone with new moss? I am thinking that whatever roots were in the pole are dead at this point? The plant still looks great though.
I tend to just keep going with them and hope that the new growth will root in at the top again 😊
Hey 😺 what happened with the tree fern fibre pole?
Do you think about getting a Florida ‘Beauty’? I want one!
sis i have question not related to this video that is I receive a blueberry plant and it had a note on it saying to keep it in shade for 7 days before repotting so what does it mean should i keep it indoors or keep it outside just keep it where sunlight dont reach all day? please help ;-;
I would go for outside in the shade :)
What kind of wood do you use for your planks? Have you noticed a difference between woods? Treated vs not treated?
I used cedar because it’s more rot resistant. It’s the only type I’ve used, but I know others have used all types. I mentioned Jeff from Everything Plants and I’m pretty sure he’s using wood slats from an old bedframe :) so I’d just use whatever you can find!
How tall do you let the clear plastic poles become before chopping?
Hi Fern, do the Rousseau poles ship from the USA to Canada? With exchange and shipping do you think its more affordable to make your own or is it about the same cost wise with the DIY poles.
Hi Fern I noticed you didn’t speak on one pole you used to talk about. Trofolia I think is the brand. What do you think of those now?
I don’t currently have any of them in use, but I think they’re great and super handy if you don’t plan on doing chop & extend! You can’t really remove the roots off of them so they don’t work well for propagating.
Hi Fern, when you do a chop and extend when you put the top half in another pot, will it ever grow roots into the pot or only in the poll thanks
Yep, it will definitely root into the pot!
OK, thanks so much. I just wasn’t sure how deep to put the stem into the pot that I’ve cut. Thanks.
What plant is that on the moss pole?
