- Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am sharing my 2022 ranunculus varieties I plan on growing here at the farm.
My corms were sourced from Leo Berbee and Ball ColorLink.

So for what it's worth... I have been listening to the Canadian girls on the Sustainable Flowers podcast, read the study by Utah State that's up on the ASCFG site, and also the Flathead Farmworks Farm page and what I'm getting out of all of it is the following: the high tunnel is a good place to fall plant ranuncs and in our cold zones, protect the crap out of them (low tunnel in the high tunnel, deep mulch, etc.) but for late winter/very early spring planting, they get cranking along and then it gets warm and it's too warm in the h/t and they shut down, with no amount of shade cloth really helping. Flathead Flower Farmworks (4a) said her late winter/early spring field planted ranuncs did better than her tunnel-planted ones for this reason, but her fall-planted in the high tunnel were fantastic and a few weeks earlier to start, so by the time they overheated and pooped out, the field ones were starting to explode with blooms. All to say: maybe experiment and plant 1/2 in your h/t and 1/2 in your field under a low tunnel that is easily removed when it warms up, the hoops are in place already up to give them some shade, and see if the combo can give you a longer harvest window? We hit 100+ in June last year (so not normal) and I was so disappointed to not get more cuts off my ranunculus, so I'm restrategizing also. Okay now I am back to minding my own bidness, lol.

Wow I didn't know they came in so many gorgeous colors I fell in love with them a couple years ago when I saw a bright yellow one it screamed spring for me I needed it. I've never sprouted my own I'm going to have to try that thanks

they had full grown flowering ranunculus plants at my local walmart here in houston. i was totally surprised and delighted.
OMG at the charmellow!! Soo beautiful!! I'm with you,ast year I had ranunculus grow but they were short and the blooms were not as big.
I think it was a me issue. This year I'm hoping for better! Planted mine in November... the ones that didn't mold due to a me issue got planted and are doing well.

I did my ranunculus in the flat trays last year and it was so easy to separate the large root systems. Love the varieties you are growing. Can’t wait to see them growing in the hoop house.
So excited to see how these do! I am hoping to push mine inside and get some for mothers day in Zone 3 so growing in my basement under my grow lights.

I adore ranunculus. Their petals always reminded me of a bird's feathers so hearing the name of that variety is Spanish for owl makes sense.
I think they are more complicated for this home gardener so will gladly pay a flower farmer. Lovely.
I love hearing the history of the Tecolote. I’m growing the white, cafe, pink, and purple. Then I got a a mix from Brecks. In total I have 90 tubers. 🤩
I’m so excited for you b/c that hoop house is going to rock your ranunculus world. I grew my (chaMAAAAAAASllow, supergreens, Juliet, all those yummy jewel tones, etc. Same color loves as you except I do not love the picotee for some weird reason.) Anyway, I grew mine in mini (20” length x 10” height) polypropylene low tunnels and they gave the ranunculus the strong jumpstart they needed and they were amazing! Vs. being “meh” the year before. In fact, so “meh” I wasn’t even going to grow them again (gasp) if they didn’t do something spectacular. So happy I tried those silly little tunnels because those ranunculus grew like champs! Made all the difference. Soooo, really long way to say congratulations on the greenhouse!!! Happy ranunculus-ing! Thank you for the super helpful video. ☺️
just bought a couple of bags at Home Depot - this will be my first year ever planting them so I greatly appreciate all the help I can get. I would've never thought to soak them but you're not the first to tell me I must do so !!! Hoping they will produce some beautiful blooms this Spring/Summer down here in Georgia - time will tell !!! thanks for all the info and inspiration
Since they were sold as fall bulbs, I put them in ground back in October. They came up and are pretty little green plants. Can't wait to see the bulbs in early spring. I'm in zone 8 in Vancouver, Washington.

That Super Greens is just delicious looking!! I love it. It is too windy and damp for Ranunculus. But I'm looking for some low growing Dalhias to grow with my fennel. They are both new to me this year!
Obsessed! Also, love the story of the ranunculus--so neat! I'm just pre-sprouting mine to get in the ground asap (I'm Cali 9b). It's my first time and didn't think about needing to overwinter them... hopefully they get enough energy stored before the heat hits

Very excited. Love the 1020 tip. But need HELP with timing please. They start blooming about 90 days from planting. Is that 90 days after presprouting,, includes presprouting time, or..... all help and tips MUCH appreciated. Trying to time for last daughter’s wedding. Yikes!
The chamallow ranunculus remind me of an Earth Angel rose. It's all going to be gorgeous.
Hope to be starting my ranunculus thursday if the air pump shows up in the mail as scheduled. I had been planning to start the corms that I got from Jake in 72 plug trays (see someone does pay attention to your videos!) But, looking at the seed-starting racks, I started to realize that I have just too much stuff starting, even this early, so thought I might try just pre-sprouting in flats to cut down the ten 72 trays to a fewer number of flats. Great minds think alike I guess.

Thanks for the story, I didn't know the background! I have a couple of these beautiful varieties this year and left some space in my (tiny) greenhouse to try some! I'm also wondering if it's possible to plant some in bulb crates so I can move them out of the greenhouse if we get any really warm snaps this spring. Have you heard of anyone doing this?? I might try one crate as an experiment, I definitely have way more than will fit into the greenhouse growing space.
Hey, have you thought about Freesias? They're tender but can be grown indoors.they go dormant during the summer, you pull them out the ground in rainy summer season and plant them back up late fall. it could be one of your first blooms as well with the ranunculus
In case this is helpful to anyone reading the comments. I got ranunculus from Brecks and from Blooming Bulb. BB’s were twice as big as Brecks. I got all of them on sale so they were all 10 tubers for $6. Started them December 13. I did not soak them four hours because I was busy and forgot to time it. To plant them I just used the 9x13 foil pans and plastic food containers. If you just have a few I suggest using sour cream containers for 1 or 2 tubers. The Brecks all came up really well in about 6 or 7 weeks. The BB’s are just starting to root after 9 weeks in a cool dark place. Short of it. Soaking them longer would probably have made them sprout faster. I literally forgot about them and they only got watered 4 times in those 9 weeks 😂😳 I’m growing the Tecolote.

Well I never! This video was great, I'm an ancient person who has been gardening here in New Zealand for over 55 years. I LOVE ranunculus and have just planted them direct I to the garden, and have never had any success. We don't get as cold here as you do in upstate NY, but it never occurred to me to start them in trays first even though I start my Dahlias in pots! DUH! Or soak them first! I haven't grown them for donkeys years because they are on my 'can't grow these list' . You have renewed my interest and I'm going to try them again using your methods. They have always blown over down here and just lie on the ground when the flowers are at their best. Because we are 'next stop antarctica' we get the spring equinox gales through spring, do you have any tips for keeping them upright??¿ I dont have a tunnel house. Anyway, better fly, and subscribe to your channel 🤞🏵🌼🌻
I love it. I think it is absolutely possible for you to have ranunculus for Mother's Day. If you caterpillar them within your hoop house, I think they will be just fine. I have learned more about fall planting from Bare Mountain Farm than any other farming family by far. They are zone 7/8, but have some incredible primitive methods. Check them out if you haven't already ! Love seeing what you are up to. Spring is around the corner :)

New Videos!!!started Ranunculus last year in October, and I started them by following your technique and it's working great for me here in Northern Cali...thank you for sharing your world with us, it inspires me to continue to be a advid gardner that helps me be a better gardner "teacher" for my babies 😇🤎🌱🤎

They look so healthy your seeds! Your gonna have a really great year with them renuculis!! Do they have smaller seeds lol because the doller stores are small but you get 15 seeds for 2$!! It's 45° yesterday in Lucas County but now we're supposed to be getting 22in 2ft of snow by Fri. Our schools are closed. Omy We could not find milk anywhere even gas stations milk was sold out!!!! People are acting like there's an apocalypse 🤣🤣.
OMG! Yea we are getting a storm here but 10-16 inches is pretty mild for a storm. Schools might close but might not depending on if the plows can keep up. My mother grew dollar store ranunculus last year and they bloomed great!
@@FlowerHillFarm yeah they said 2ft yesterday but it's moving south! It's rain now but it's gonna be 6in today and all day tommoro. I think with it being in the 30s we got lucky with a foot of snow. Omy girl them colors and I'm marshmallow anything lol my kitchen will always have bags of marshmallows front and center🤣I remember you had a video and had hot coco and asked if do marshmallows or if we don't and I said oh I do lol. I'm ordering all the ones that have the word marshmallow in it and the colors are just stunning of all the ones you shared!! So happy for you!!🤚

Do you grow anemones as well or just ranunculus -- a mouse got into my ranunculus in my basement and ate several of them -- I even had some netting over them but they were on the floor so easy eating -- we live and learn everyday with gardening, don't we?
Hi Nicole! So, I am starting ranunculus again this year (last year was the first year and was a FAIL lol) so I am wondering, should I be starting to sprout mine already? I’m in zone 5a in Vermont, and They are going in a container garden. I’m wondering when I should plan to transplant them outdoors?

According to the internet, Tecolote is one of several Spanish-language words meaning owl. The word is of Nahuatl origin and is used mostly in Mexico and in areas of the United States!

I bought ranuculs from home depot and have 50 of them blooming but they don't look full like yours at all. They don't have that many petals and I'm so disappointed. The bulbs are ranuculus and the package said so but could they be an earlier version and not the types you have? Where do you get your seeds? I'm not getting them from big box stores any longer. Thanks!

I have pre soaked my corms and put them in pre-moistened soil (not soaking) in a tray like you did in this video for pre sprouting. The top of the soil seems dry, they have another week. They are under the bed in a spare bedroom that is 66 degrees. Should I leave them be or sprinkle some water on them?

Is it just me or does anyone else think they look like giant spiders 🕷! It's amazing to think something so crippy can grow to be so gorgeous.
Spiders, octopus, aliens, tiny dahlia clumps! Yup! They're so bizarre looking!
Gorgeous end product buuutttt the corms looks like spiders and yeaaaaaaa, ugh. 🤢. Wondering if you put more soil, the roots have even more room to grow if you weren’t able to put them outside when you wanted to in case of fickle weather? Idk. I’ve never grown them.
I find ranunculus and lisianthus far more beautiful than roses. Wondering if I am the only one who thinks that?
