While daffodils and tulips are wonderful spring flowers, anemones and ranunculus are the spring blooms that really capture the seasonal moment.
I will discuss my five factors for success with growing these corms or bulbs in your cut flower garden.

Very helpful. Thank you. In my previous flower beds, I had problems with a cute rodent--squirrels. I did try some in wire cages and had some success.
Informative and thorough video its my first year growing anemones and this my go to reference video for pre sprouting the bulbs, I’ve followed all your advice and had great success I’m just about to pot them on into individual pots and placing them in my cold frame to grow on before planting them out

This is my first to grow both the "proper" way and they are now sprouting :-) I plan to plant them in pots and on the ground (zone 8b - Seattle, WA) to see what works best for them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

I followed your advice on what to do and what not to do and I now have tiny shoots on my corms ( which I inspect daily 🤣) Hopefully I can keep them alive !! . This is awesome information. It's really hard to get these little creatures to bloom !! I tried the ranunculus last spring and I think I rotted them. These year fingers crossed I have sprouted a bunch and they are in pots outside and in a small flower bed....hoping to see beautiful blooms this spring. We will see if I can keep the water levels appropriate through the winter ....wish me luck and great job to you 👏

I planted them like you said. I couldn’t believe how much different they were after they set in warm not hot water and drained. Then I would put warm water and do it again. I planted them in a long pot. And I have been waiting for some thing to happen. It has been a week so far nothing is happening yet.
I grew anemones for the first time this year - plonked them straight from the packet into a terracotta pot full of standard peat-free compost, watered them and they came up with no problem. I had no idea it was meant to be more complicated than that! Interesting to see what I should have done, maybe I'll try it that way next year.
ok when you say put them in a warm place, it is very subjective, what is warm for you and warm for me in Canada are 2 different things can you tell what is warm temperature for the anemones to be sprouting?
Something that confuses me: Ranunculus are not at all frost hardy, so if we plant them in the fall and they send up shoots, won’t frost damage to those shoots risk killing the whole plant? I am in USDA Zone 8 and everything says to plant ranunculus in the fall here, but how are they supposed to survive the winter if they are presprouted and actually start growing in the fall? I am perplexed.
Yes I am also in zone 8 and trying to figure this out. Last year I put them in a cold frame outside after they pre sprouted in my garage then in spring moved from the cold frame into my garden bed. But I think I transported them into diff pots too many times, they flowered but most of the flowers were pretty small and I was lucky to get 2 blooms per corn.

And if i did, would i get flowers from them this summer?
My honest answer is I’ve never done that and they don’t like the heat - you can store the corms in the fridge for October

Great information once again. I tried ranunculus and anemones last year for the first time and managed to get lovely ranunculus blooms, but the anemones were a bust. I’ll try again this spring. I’m in zone 5 (Canada), so I have to wait until early spring.
Hi Cindy yes you’ll need to wait in zone 5! We’re in 8 - I confess I found it tricky the other way round so hopefully some of the advice for anemones will work- fingers crossed - thanks for your lovely message x
I’ve just this morning found your channel and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I tried ranunculus and anemone last year in pots and it was too much hard work moving them about in extreme weather. However, I saved the corms because they were so expensive and I’ve now got quite a few which have sprouted brilliant and I was wondering if I dare plant them in the garden as I don’t have a poly tunnel. I do have a low tunnel which I’ll now try, how far apart do you plant these and do you stake them. Thanks Deb
So if they've actually shrivelled up or disappeared completely, they died? (about 2 weeks in potting soil in a greenhouse)

We're holding a fundraising ball for a mental health charity in memory of my late daughter next May and I'm very much hoping to grow the ranunculus for the event! Could you advise me as to when I should I be getting them going in order to have them flowering from early to mid May? We live on Suffolk's east coast and my greenhouse is unheated. Thank you.
Start them off in January is my thought although the weather does influence and my experience is growing up North. I think that timing will work though. I have grown ranunculus for the first time this year. It never said to pre-soak on the box so I didn’t do this and they are all coming up and looking healthy so not sure what I did right….?
Thanks for your video, I watched from start to finish and I have a question. Does the tray you are using have holes? I purchased corms and they arrived just yesterday. It is now end of March, would it be too late to plant these coms?
The tray does have drainage holes- and in all honesty I’ve never planted them this time of year, always a bit earlier as they like cooler weather

They go back on the suspended shelves then it’s garlic pellets in the soil when I plant them out - the cat would either drown in the canal or be squashed on the road
How deep do you plant ranunculus in soil in the raised beds when you have pre sprouted and there are shoots showing ? I live in Zone 3 in Canada
Opps just saw your comment- I’ll grow the plants on a little then plant and make sure I can see the green growth - firm the soil around the base and then I think they’ll be fine

Truthfully as I live in the north of England I have no idea where to source the corns for you/ and they do like cool conditions so perhaps would be tricky
Hello, I'm so glad I just found your channel. This is wonderful information. I tried ranunculus and anemones last spring but I think a lot of them dried out during the presprouting process. Plus our winter into spring transition can go from cool to hot very quickly. So I am starting my pre sprouting process now (earlier) and plan to plant the out late jan/early feb. I am in zone 7a - US New Jersey coastline. Our winters have become way more mild, but of course weather is anyone's guess. Can I ask what is your hardiness zone where you are?
I think we’re 8 - and I remember snow days when we lived in Pennsylvania- I’m sprouting more in a week so I can have a succession of flowers- I do love ranunculus and anemones as they just keep flowering!! Thank you 🙏 for your lovely note

Do they come back year after year ? I planted some in a hoophouse 2 years ago and replanted more corms last year, but I could see that there were much more plants where i already planted last year.
The anemones appear to be more perennial than the ranunculus- I think it’s about the soil and drainage- and the mice 🐁- I grow outside so the winter is also a factor
At what point ..once sprouted, should they be moved from inside to outside? Do they need leaves or can they be planted as soon as they have roots?
I always wait until they’re small plants before putting them outside- hope that helps

Not at all! I give mine a diluted seaweed feed if they look like they need it - ie foliage is a bit paler than a good strong green- thank you for your message- much appreciated
I kept my pre soaked ranunculus in seed trays on top of my boiler for an entire night 🤦🏽♀️, will they go dormant now ?
Truthfully I have no idea but I’m not sure it was great for them

I don’t heat the greenhouse so it falls with the weather but I do cover some plants if it’s really really cold - like -10

Thanks for a great instructional video on growing these wonderful flowers! I'm trying growing anenomes and ranunculus for the first time for me here in Southern California! I soaked and pre-sprouted them pretty well and they are now in the ground, and some green shoots are coming up! Here's hoping :-) Even if I just get a few that bloom this year, I will consider that a success.

Hello there, first time trying ranunculus here in Somerset. I have had success with them sprouting in large ceramic pots in a cold greenhouse! I didn't know about starting them in trays and then potting on/planting out. Would you say it is a good idea to just keep them going in the ceramic pots now and just keeping them watered appropriately/fed? I was thinking perhaps transferring a few into the borders eventually to see if they do well (however we have clay soil, and lots of slugs/snails/mice, hence doing them in pots) but will I disturb the growing plants if I do this? Would Jan/feb be the right time to do this if so? Many thanks in advance, complete amateur here!
I’m on clay and haven’t planted them outside until January. I think your idea of planting a few out is a really good one- plant with garlic granules and make sure the soil is not solidly wet and has some drainage- I attempt to hide mine from the wildlife 😂😂 we’re all experimenting always!!!! I pot up from the trays to give the roots space then they go out early in the new year. All the luck with them Daniela

I use 100% coconut coir but I grow in containers. The ranunculus roots *love* it! I found soil holds too much water. I also have never seen so white roots. I am trying now with Anemones.
