I received my order from Unicorn Blooms for my 2024 ranunculus and anemone crop, and I messed up! I ordered $5000 worth of corms and that is way more then I need for my flower farm. With 4200 bulbs in total, I only have space for 2400. So I need your help to know which are "must grow" and which are only tempting. I also share everything I've learned with experimenting with these amazing spring blooms over the last few years. I can't wait for spring to be here again.

You can sell some in nice potts in your gardenshop, just classic terracotta pots spanish moss and the flower ! So pretty in the spring!!
That's what I do with shorter varieties.
Selling them in pots. Slow flowers are popular here in Germany.
Ranuncaholism is real. We can start a support group.
Just an idea to reach florist. When I owned my shop we ordered heavy from the wholesalers at the beginning of the week. Towards the end week, things would start to look a little sparse. We had local growers that would drive around with buckets of local grown flowers. They would bring unique things like hellebores, flowering quince, etc. We happily bought their buckets because they were beautiful and a fair price. Florist are always looking for something that will set their shop apart from the competition especially since grocery stores have killed a lot of florist.
My personal favorite was the mistral Bordeaux, but as ex wedding florist I would have bought all of the last group of the pastel colors. I think that is your safest bet. When these guys are blooming, it will be the spring and spring color palettes for wedding tend to be soft.
I was literally dreaming that I was hanging out with you and Ian and one of your cats had kittens and you gave me a kitten and I helped you cut Lizzie’s - then I woke up and you have a new video- I adore you both and have been inspired over and over
Haha this is cute 😊
Even my husband (not into gardening or TH-cam) likes Ian and Serena. They'd be fun to hang out with!
My two favorite flowers 💕 I love your channel and seeing all your beautiful flowers!
Awesome video!!! I loved your explanation on every flower and the pics you put up. Beautiful!!!
As far as what to get rid of, I think some of the red ranunculus or any that you don’t like that much. Good luck! Awesome content. This was the first video I saw of yours and I loved it! ❤
This is your chance to set up a Squarespace site and sell the corms 😅. I get so many Canadian small growers who ask if I can ship to them (I can’t), so there is demand!!
OMG Ive just done our ranunculus order and I couldn’t stop myself either. Our high tunnel arrives in the next two weeks and we are super excited for these to flower in our Spring 2024. I will get great enjoyment watching yours flower months before mine 🥰
i looooovvvvved the blue bachelor buttons with the ranunculus 😅
KEEP THEM ALL!!! You know how to grow them and you can make space for them.
That's exactly what I was thinking too 😀 Can't have too many!!
Have you ever considered a pick your own. Customers comes to the farm to make there own bouquet?
Please also make a staggered staging for the market to show off your bouquets. If you are vertically challenged you won’t be able to see the flowers. Use of the floor could increase the number of bouquets on display.
Use of tissue paper inside the brown paper of your bouquets to make them look more elegant. You should aim to look more high end.
Can you also put a sign on your farmers market stand saying ‘locally grown seasonal flowers’
Also thought you need a van so that you can store all of the made up flowers in the back the day before the market. Cut out the need for the cooler. Looks like lots of effort to load the pickup.
Love the flowers! Keep up the hard work. I love watching the videos.
Kelowna is extremely hot in summer. A cooler is essential. The flowers would wilt incredibly quickly.
What to do with all of those? I'd sell some in smaller bags where you can do some mixes (pretend you are making bouquets but with the corms). You can ship them to fellow Canadians. I'd also pot some up and sell them to local gardeners.
I love ranunculus and anemones.
Go for it plant them all your heart wants it
So charming.
Would certainly pay good money for them
Omigod, I am in love with Malta! Can't wait to see how they come out 🙂
We divide our anemone and ranunculus crops into 2 spring successions (may greenhouse and june outdoor blooming) and 1 fall/winter succession (Ontario, 6a). I also found that second year old UB elegance corms (non-sprouted from 2023) soaked and rooted really really well if you feel like saving them for 2025.
That was my question, why wouldn't you be saving them every year??
Lets be honest Serina, You can't live without any of those varieties! Insert maniacal laugh here.....muaahaaaa!
Cmon Serena, I’m sure if you put your mind to it you can find room for ALL of them, and you would not regret it 😜
Nicole, nooo don't tell her that! It's financially stressful buying too much let alone the additional work. I hope Serena saves some of the corms for the following year. She needs to watch your video!
Just love them all. When I visit family in Kelowna in the Summer I will pop over to your market stand to buy flowers.
Those Bordeaux are gorgeous!
Maybe to allow you to keep a lot of the colors you could sell some "grow your own bouquet" packs with a mixture of things that will go together. Like you said, at the consumer level it's hard to find them to plant yourself.
These are beautiful varieties! I love anemones 😀
If you do have to part with some I would part with the common daffodil colors, if you want some yellow or white in your bouquet reach for the Daffs you already have, same if you have those colors in tulips. Also, maybe you don't have to plant the entire bag? Or if you have a bunch of pots laying around maybe you could fill the pots with soil and grow ranuculous in them to either sell as a potted plant or to just move to vacant/dormant flower rows?
Im a home gardener and you're making me want to get more. Such beautiful flowers.
Grow them all! 😂 But if you really run out of space, pot up the spare ranunculus and anemone in 9cm pots and sell them at the farm stand! I get really nice plants in that size pot from starting them off in a module tray first around 4 weeks beforehand. Here in Cyprus the anemone corms I left in the ground last year are already flowering!! ❤🌸
I in fact manage to get good anemone stems in winter, outside in the cold.
What timing! I started watching and a truck pulled into the yard with my Unicorn Bloom order.
PS part with Malva it looks dirty and washed out. I didn’t find it very vigorous.
Can you do an in depth ranunculus Growing video. I can’t get it right to save my life…..
I'll buy a few hundreds from you if you have to rehome some!! And my 2 cents: practically, def think you should ramp up varieties that are softer. That and quality filler
You should keep all of them but split it all in half that way you keep all the different varieties but only grow what you need
Maybe another hoop house is the answer. Maybe you were meant to be known as the ranunculus queen😊 if you grow them, they will sell!
planting them all xx
Omg I did the same thing on a smaller scale, and I sold of all the extras potted at local garden club. People sort of fought over them.
Love seeing all of these ranunculus! Do you ever dig up the corms and save them to plant the following year?
You don’t need to do without anything. You can plant every variety, just not every corm and save the excess for next year.
I assume you'd be selling the extras to other farmers, so you have fewer concerns about marketing and presentation. How about selling 50 - 75% of each of your test colors? You don't need 100 corms for testing, especially ones you think may be similar to each other. Divide them by weight into paper bags and sharpie the name on - easy peasy. I'm sure other growers in your area didn't buy things they would have liked because they weren't able to grow 100 of each!
You bought them all for a reason. However, does your sample size need to be 100? Could you grow starts again to have a seedling sale? Do you have time for that? Would the city parks department want to buy some corms from you?
Allow me! HA! The flowers with colored edges are called "picotee" ˌpi-kə-ˈtē : a flower (such as some carnations or tulips) having one basic color with a margin of another color. The "Sfumato" flowers are named that because of the painting "technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms."
I am definitely a plant addiction. If you don't have room please send some to me. ❤
Ranunculus varieties to let go of in my opinion; red and (keep the red anemone), the yellow with orange tips,(redundant with pure yellow), all the pastels except for the pure salmon,( they don't strike me as wedding vibes), Anemone to let go of in my opinion; mistral tirgra anemone,(redundant with the red), Levante mix anemone, full star mix, full star red, mistral edge Bianco,( very similar to the white with light interior, mistral milka, Carmel pastel. I may have missed it but you may want to add a super pastel yellow in either ranunculus or anemone.
Just leaving this here in case you or anyone else might care about the pronunciation of the ranunculus varieties: "sfumato" (which means softly blended, like a gradient) is sf-uh-mato, "giallo" (yellow) starts with a soft g (something like jiallo) and "malva" (mauve) has a hard v, so mal-va. Good job on pronouncing the others though!!
So is there any chance to do a second planting for the fall.
Not sure if your limitation on quantities to plant is space or demand. If you want to trial all of these, then plant half or 75% of each kind (assuming space is the limitation). Regarding demand, I've done both a farmers market and have sold to retail and wedding florists via a wholesaler. Retailers in general like the same bright flowers as your market customers. So if you will be selling to retail florists you can grow more of the brights than you can personally use. However, the wedding florist customer is voracious. While pink isn't popular currently in Colorado, you will probably be able to sell all of the pink, blush and white varieties of the ranunculus and anemones to this customer. I would eliminate the mixed colored anemones - not good for the retail florist/farmer market customers nor the wedding florists who demand a quantity of the same flower. For the same reason goodbye Bianco Striato - it isn't perfect for anybody. And bid adieu to the purple anemone. The blue anemone fills this spot better.
Almost an hour?! Yessss! Love the long videos
I love your bright beautiful ranunculus. I’ve always loved the bouquets of bright colors you arrange. I totally failed growing ranunculus and lisianthus last year and decided not to try growing them this year, but seeing your shipment reveal, makes me want to try one more time. You’re a bad influence, Lol. I’m excited for watching you get ready for spring seed starting and planting. I hope you have a very successful growing year.
Good job practicing your pronunciations Serena
The soft colors is where it is for me!!! I have a hard time with the bright and bold!
The past year the bouquets have felt like they lack a bit more variety, maybe keep more varieties, but lesser the amount of flowers for most varieties? Also the fullstar anemones in white and red look a bit meh, not quite fully bloomed, not quite a closed bud, seemed weird, maybe drop those?
Festival mix with the green is just stunning ?!?!?
HI Senima, if you are selling extra corms I will be happy to buy about 100 more or less, please let me know
I love that Malva! Pantone color of the year is peach so that might be something to keep in mind as you decide what to keep.
No one can grow them like you😊. Keep them all !! I can’t wait to see them grow and you love on them.
I bought a lot of seeds this year so I understand wanting every thing. I think you should aim towards florist and make a link on your website they the florist can go in to see what is available to buy. Also shoot them e mails of what flowers are available. Go In person too with flowers . Get rid of some of them yellow flowers
I think you should focus on what the florists want so you can get more streams of income. That's probably not much fun though, and I really like those orange ranunculus. I think I'm going to try to grow some orange geums this year to satisfy my craving for bright flowers in the spring/early summer.
I'm with you. I love love love orange flowers!!! I think I have 5 packets of orange wonder snapdragon seeds. Then multiples of orange cosmos, climbing roses, calendula, zinnia, sunflowers, saffron, Mexican sunflowers, dahlias, gomphrena, nasturtiums, marigolds, etc. We only have 1.5 acre including >3000sqft house, pool, 16'X26' high tunnel, 8'X10' chicken coop and 20'X20' run, 8'X15' block building, 1/3 acre fruit trees...all on a golf course, hole 9. Ugh! I really enjoy your videos. Probably because I can in some ways relate. We don't have a flower farm and we do have 2 ing-round gardens (6'X16' and 24'X254') and a raised bed (9) garden. zone 7a E TN U S Actually, my friend has let me use part of her 20 acre property in the past and said I can go up and use garden space again this year. Such an inspiration watching you grow so many beautiful flowers!
Thank you!! made a list for next year. I would love to know what foliage you use this early with the renucs.
Decisions, decisions. A keeper for sure is the Mistral bordeaux burgundy anenome that you grew in the field. Can't help but think the other Mistrals would also grow well outside? Soooo.... I'd make room for them outside, and newer varieties/trial ones in the tunnel....Festival mix ran. etc. Geez..could you plant some in your crates? or are those all spoken for already. I wouldn't keep a lot of the wedding colors. Just a couple to put your toe in that pond. If they've been asking for that ..then ok..but I just wouldn't stress about that if you don't have to. White/pk/maybe a bicolor to match?..and just a dash of those....then keep all the wonderful colors! I've not tried anenomes. I didn't realize you'd have success w/out a tunnel. Ranuncs. a fail for me outside in a covered low tunnel. Good Luck guys!!
Because you asked about what to pass on,
Of the brights I’d pass on the yellows that have red edges
I’d pass on the variegated pinkish one
I’d pass on 300/600 of the doubles. Just plant 50 of each instead of 100
Mistral milko and mistral rarity look a lot alike. I think I’d pass on milko
I’d also cut back on at least half of the pastels
I’d cut back on some whites
It’s so hard to shrink a shopping cart!
great video!
Quick feedback--can we stop referring to things as an addiction or a fix? and making jokes about 12 step programs? Addictions kill people and ruin families.
Thanks in advance :) :) :)
SAME Serena Same!! All girls are the same when it comes to shopping!
We arent ourselved while shopping…..
After shopping, it’ll only a matter of time that, we girls, were went on a shopping frenzy and we’re not sane😂😂😂😂😂
Do you direct sow, or do you presprout?I tried growing once and they were a total failure! i'm afraid to try again. Yours are absolutely beautiful. I'm from the states and don't know where to purchase them. I think I bought mine from Home Depot- which I understand isn't the best, but my first year I didn't want to spend a lot.
Hi, Serena, I do church flowers in Texas, agriculture zone 8b. Would any of those anemones grow well here? They are all beautiful.
Ah, yes. I call that a floristic slip. The intention to order the right amount is there, but somehow I just order a LOT more. Oopsie!
I'm uk but I grow alot of elegans ranunculus and mistral type anenome the rarity and rosa chario is amazing and is definitely worth growing but I'm with you on the true blue anenome there is nothing like them I think pastello is just a mix of all the normal elegans ranunculus types but my fav is the striato with the blackberry toned edges and pink tones I personally like bright but my florists definitely like the pale tones the Nero centered white anenome are less good as the pollen stains the petals that's why the green centers are so much better
I have been missing you guy's so much❤❤❤🕊️
If I was getting married I would love to have mistrial azzurro in my bridal bouquet
I would like to have $5000 to spend on plants!
I would say split the bags in half so you’re still growing all the colors but just not quite as many.
Dónde puedo conseguir todas esas semillas me gustan mucho todas esas flores soy de Ecuador
I think you should plant them all! Yeah, I'm useless at this. It's the one area I have absolutely no self control.
Serena where can we get ranunculus corms right now to start early in Canada?
Since you really cannot grow them all, I think that the first ones to re-home should be the Mistral Bordeaux. You state that they don't fit easily in your palette, you find them a little bit difficult to work with, etc. Remember, you can't keep them all! Perhaps you should set up a tournament-style competition. The Absolutely Must grow bulbs / corms get a bye, and probably the Really Should grow group, but the rest of them should "compete". Which of these 2 Maybes do I prefer? Okay, it moves on to the next round, the other one doesn't. Another option would be to keep some of every type that you bought, but not the full quantity. (I, for instance, would be happy to buy 5 or 10 mixed bulbs / corms if you would care to ship to Central Ontario)
Serena, you are so cute! And crazy for flowers just like I do. I get so excited during bare root rose or bulb ordering time in winter. When everything blooms in April, I'd get Spring Fever. My yard looks like a small nursery! Your selections look amazing. Grow those new ones and plant less of the old types if you run out of room. Or get more tunnels. I'd buy your gorgeous flowers if I live near by. Happy planting!!! Greetings from the USA.
Hi Serena, thank you for your vids.
As a pro myself, both as “Your Gardening Angel” a residential perennial/veg service, and “The Petal Pedaler” where I deliver hand tied bouquets to clients on my electric cargo bike, I try and not grow anything that’s going to cause me issues. Oy! there is already so! much to do anything that doesn’t give me a bang, as much as I may love it has to go. That being said, as per what you described, I might delete the hot pink, the red, the Giallo, and no offense, that Striatto just looks a bit of a mess to me unless it is actually less strident in person.
Love that you’re experimenting and wish us all the most amazing season!!!
All the best,
Sabrina
keep all I cant pick :(
Alright, TOUGH LOVE: Part with
Ranunculus:
Giallo Striato
Bianco Sfumato
Bianco Striato
Salmon
Pastello
Anemones:
Mistral Grape
Mistral Tigre
(Mistral Vinato)
Levante Mix
Fullstar Blue
Fullstar Red
Mistral Azzuro OR Mistral Bianco Centro Nero
Mistral Milka
Carmel Pastel
I'd say get rid of the red and deeper color ranunculus that get easily blemished and replace with the anemones of the same color, especially since you're saying you get the red anemones because the red ranunculus don't grow well. Also, I was watching this on my laptop and my husband was like, "Oh, it's your Canadian flower farming lady." :)
I do not grow a TON of flowers in my garden as they honestly intimidate me with all their special needs and planting guidelines, which is silly as I thrive as a veggie gardener and those plants ALSO have their own fussy guidelines at times. I do grow zinnias, poppies, cornflowers, petunias and alyssum and bought a TON more seed packets of flowers last year to force myself to play with flowers more this year. I also am using the lasagna method for some daffodils, tulips, and crocus (if the darn squirrels will stop digging them up to plant their acorns). I absolutely ADORE watching your flower hauls, though, as I dream to venture more into some of these varieties and I love seeing the excitement in you as you share your new babies to grow.
I would pass on the Carmel Pastel mix, just based on my previous experience. I have purchased them before from reputable sources and have ended up with them being a mix of mostly scarlet blooms with the occasional white bloom with red streaks. The Mistral varieties never disappoint, and I have heard good things about Fullstars as well.
I also grow rarity every year, its a light purpley blue that reflects in the light. No mixed colours! It's freaking STUNNING you are gonna freak
Don’t hate me but …. all of the striated varieties would be a 🥴 🙅♀️. The variation on every petal loses the form of the flower making them way too busy, IMHO.
I love bright colors and your bright flowers, but I love the pastellos, particularly. Also love the Festival. Do you have gardening help?
What greenery do you use in your rainbow ranunculus bouquets? They are just GORGEOUS!!! 😍🤩
i tried ranunculus and anemone last year was a total failure but I like them a lot so I am willing to give it a try after all your excitement. So I am willing to help you out but for a small amount $100.00 send me whatever bulletproof you want to part with.
Do you know the bicoloured anemone Rainbow Blue? White with a blue center. They are very beautiful and get strong long stems. Those should be very interesting for florists. 🍀🍀🍀
I'm hoping to buy some of these this year, 800 anemones and 700 ranunculus, it's lucky they don't cost to much compared to tulips, in new zealand that is, not sure how much you guys pay.
Yes, Bordauex Anemone is amazing! Last year I paired them with Daphne o, “Zuiko Nishiki” for Mother’s Day, (family & friends, I don’t sell). Noticed more comments, photos and sharing than usual. Also they lasted a long time. 😍
I really appreciate your efforts. And share good information and experience . Stay smiling
just subscribed!! I thought I already was...dummy me...have been watching your channel for about 2 years now..I love watching you do dried flowers and your bouquets which are so beautiful you have a real talent knowing what flowers go together...I loved it when you planted flowers beside your flower stand, great idea!! keep up the good work, can't wait to watch your videos as your flowers grow!!
Don’t give any away!!!!
Plant them by the shed!
Plant them with the daffodils!
Plant them with the peonies!
Plant them anywhere!
Serena, you're making it hard for my brain to focus on budgeting. I love your unboxing videos . Your flower choices and bouquets always satisfy my soul. Also consider for weddings Italian renuculus La Dolce Vita. ❤
It was so nice to see such rich colours at this time of year . Thank you for sharing your beautiful flower order. Did not know there were so many different varieties of Anenomes and ranunculus . You are so passionate with your work your smile didn't leave your face the whole time. You had fun being good to yourself with buying them. From vancouver Island Moose out
Elegance Malva, Mistral Tigre, Vinato, Lavante Rosa, Fullstar Blue, Mistral Bianca, Rosa Chiaro mistral milka,
Everything anenome that isn't the first blue or a nice solid pink, take 1/4 to 1/2 the lots you bought and plant those. sell off the rest. Plant the ones you keep across two locations so you can judge where they grew the best.
I've been a viewer since veggies were your primary and watch all your videos, I know you didn't get the tulips in early enough due to the cold last year but what do you think was the problem with the ranunculus-I can't remember. Was it the heat?
I think they will all bring value to your bouquets and to local florists. You have to grow a good amount of each and pick the varieties that are the hardy ones, good producers and most healthy blooms.
I can't imagine what the farm will look like in 5 years! Wonderful investments into your surroundings 😊 can't wait to see all your flowers this year.
I really like all of the Mistral flowers. Especially the Boardeaux. I love the moody colors. I’d love to have a whole garden bed of them. I might need to order myself some for next year. However, I suspect the brights will be the best sellers at the stand. They’ll definitely be eye catching and turn heads. I’d fill up the greenhouse with the rainbow mix and plant the extra pastels in the field under row cover. If you have extra corms, you could probably sell six packs at your roadside stand.
Are you selling the corns I am in Ontario just let me know
Serina....you are READY for wedding palettes. Let yourself be open to it
