Yes. I’m for certain now: After watching 5 videos and the out-takes, we need to be friends. Come-stop on over for tea sometime. Head straight toward California and take a sharp right at ohhhhh, Indianapolis. I’m just right near there. Waiting. To be your friend. We are the same person. And now I sound creepy. 😂🤣 Please don’t block me, I am learning so much about flower farming. I grow veggies in pots on my back porch and my converted sandbox. I just started growing flowers out there for all the little kids in the neighborhood. We grew watermelons as well. Ohhhh to see their little faces light up! Priceless. I love your energy and enthusiasm!!

Just reached out to a local flower farmer and asked if she's growing any and if she'd be willing to part with a few plugs. My DREAM is to become a flower farmer but I think I'll need a couple years practice first and I know I'm not at "growing my own lisianthis" level yet, so maybe I'll get lucky!! Thanks for the inspiration Nicole! Fingers crossed she'll share. Shoot, I'd be happy with litterally just a couple, so I can practice growing it from plugs first!

I heard algae grows on potting mixes because they have too much organic matter. This was a big problem for me in years past, so I have experimented on my onion and lantana seeds with just growing in plain peat moss. As they grow I will add some earthworm castings and compost. I'm hoping this will make a big difference.

So exciting to see your lisianthus seedlings coming up, Nicole. Hope you have success with them. Regarding the vermiculite, be careful not to breathe the dust. There are minerals in it including asbestos. You don’t want to be taking that into your lungs or ingesting it. You may want to consider letting it sit in the grinder for some time to let the dust settle and wearing a respirator mask when you are working with it. I realize you are not working with it all day everyday and the health risk may be minuscule. I don’t want to frighten you. Just wanted to pass along that information to you in case you weren’t aware of it. Someone told me about this years ago when I mentioned I was using it in my potting mix. 🥰

    • @FlowerHillFarm

As a human, even your breath, and body's heat loss, in that inclosed space can raise the humidity, possibly the temp too. Of course, there may be variations of temperature and humidity within that space normally, also the starts are wet/moist, they are surely creating additional humidity all around them, but it's not a large room, maybe a slight draft causing a variation? Just my thoughts as you were showing us the readings.

Your vermiculite is much more coarse than the bag I buy at the local Agway. I was able to give the trays a dusting straight from the bag right at the time of planting. I started most of mine the same time you started yours and haven't seen any algae growth yet so I hope the vermiculite is doing its magic. I looked at using RootShield should algae appear but decided against ordering it if not needed since a pound of the dust is $178.
I started seven 200 plug trays on the mats under the domes and am seeing excellent germination but not noticing multiple plants in the cells. (Granted, these seedlings are tiny and my eyes are not what they used to be.) Happy so far with my first try at lisianthus and not it's anywhere as much work as some commentators claim. I priced lisianthus at Farmer Bailey and decided to do all them myself. Other than the seed, my main cost is the coconut coir and vermiculite I mix with my worm castings to create my starting mix.

Nicole I'm starting Pampus Plume Celosia from seed 🤪(a lovely soft mix of colours). It's supposed to get 3' - 4' tall! It needs a much longer head start because of that. My question is- Should I start them in a deeper pot? I'm guessing such a tall plant would have deep roots. Or do you think the longer 6 packs will be fine until transplant? I just don't know how vigorous they grow, I'm excited and nervous about them. Ahhhh.🤪

I think the other calculation to include is the risk factor. With plugs, you don’t take on the risk of the seedlings potentially failing. I don’t know how you quantify that, but I would think it’s another factor in favor of buying plugs.
