A sanding block, or a flat piece of wood, on top of the pad would do the trick. Also, the glove advice is good. Lockjaw would NOT be fun but even a simple cut can become infected. Think of your girlfriend too!
Ryan truly enjoy your passion and dedication to old cars. I too have a couple 64 c10 and two door 69 nova. Great tech tip with clr can't wait to try it thanks.
Thanks for the video, but I would have liked to see this done on some of the "rustier"areas like the high points on the quarters and on the trunk to see what it does to them. Not expecting it to do as good, just see the end result. Then what's next ? Polish, linseed oil ,flat clear coat ,to protect it from the elements.
Wax on.... Wax off. It looks great! I never thought of that. The green pads are supposed to be non-scratch. The dark burgundy ones will take the paint off. They will also take meat off of your fingers if you're not paying attention. Ask me how I know.
Hi there. I really like your videos ..And there seems to be plenty for me to watch ! Excellent content old bean. Very enjoyable to see you saving these cars -etc. By the way, Hello from England.
I use the same method, and passed the information on two other TH-camrs. I find lime away product work quicker. Then I clay bar and buff, 2 codes polish, three coats of liquid wax... High gloss Turtle Wax. On dark cars I use a anti squirrel polish last. Thanks for sharing.
Next one cup vinegar with one cup Don blue dishwashing soap put it in a microwave for 1 minute heated up put in the spray bottle go around spray all the rust and let it sit on it like overnight and the vinegar will eat the rust off
Hey Ryan great idea! The car is looking good. Are we going to see it on the road soon? I noticed the license plate on the back. And just wondering if we are going to see the '59 Impala coming out of that ravine soon? Looking forward to that too.
Straight up Kleen Strip phosphoric acid from the hardware store works great too. Turns the iron oxide to iron phosphate which is grey. It will discolor paint somewhat if not applied evenly.
great trick! I use it to remove the superficial rust from the chrome of the motorcycles: a steel wool soaked in soap and you rub the part without crushing. Nice idea of leaving the patina on the body paint .... do you think you can apply a coat of clear coat?
@Randall Johnson linseed oil is EXTRMELY flammable, and i have seen too many people lose garages because of it. i do not recommend using it for that reason
hi l really enjoyed how you removed the rust on that car but after that you should put car polish on it and that car polish on it it is called California gold you can but one at your local orils store the wax kind it is roung and when you open it it is pink in color and when you put it on that car it will bring out the rell blue shine and it will be smooth to so let me know if that works out for you alright
Yeah i means its just surface rust but do you think surface rust forms because there is rust under the paint? or just because of the rain maybe? Idk its wierd , had the same problem but i hit the paint with sanding paper and it came off , so it just made me think if there was maybe rust under the paint ? 🤷♂️
I've used this technique several times. You shouldn't do it out in the sun and make sure to wash it off with a good car wash soap . I'm sure you know the linseed oil trick ?
@@IowaClassicCars Question..... what made you fall in love with the 59 Chevy's? For myself, dad had a 59 Parkwood when I was a kid..... I just loved the styling of that car.
If there is rust on the paint , it must be so thin the metal is rusting underneath, that's what paint is for, to stop metal rusting. I can't see the point of what you're doing.
@@IowaClassicCars you didn't ask, I gave it to everyone for free. Patina is for lazy people and looks like crap. Give me 10 k and I'll paint it and walk away with 9.5k profit.

Understand that I'm not hating on you, I'm hating on patina as something that is supposedly cool or desirable, patina is a french word meaning " needs a paint job "
Vinegar and water works well too. I soak old cast iron carbs in it over night and clean with a wire brush. Works great.
I tried that and it stripped my paint right off
The trick is to perform this in a shaded area with the surface cooled. Keeping the surfce wet and allowing the CLR to desolve the rust.
Correct!
Nice, keep the pad flat under your hand, you will cover more area and not risk putting grooves on the paint.
Keep up the good work!!

I believe the color that shows where the paint is burned off is the factory primer
The quarters are actually primer. The paint has worn away....so thats why i didnt do it on that
Damn that's quit an improvement. Good job.

Great job, can't wait to more of the old girl
Thanks Rob!

Well done...resourceful use of CLR!....also consider applying Boiled Linseed Oil after, to seal the patina..
Looks great! Bought a few jugs, going to try on my original paint Bonneville. Sitting since 1977
Good luck!

Great video, the CLR mixture does work great for this 👍
Thanks man!
Thats nice. You can then use a polisher on it after and bring it out even more !
Exactly!
Good to know !

How did it last over the years did the clr eat the paint over time
Tanks for the demo.
I assume after doing that you would then use a polisher/wax? What particularly do you use?
And it's a FOUR DOOR. YES.

Four in the back 2 if they fat 🤷🏻

Nice tip...I’ve used Ajax or Comet scrubbing powder before
Thanks!
Will this method work on the thicker rust like I saw near the corner of the rear window and on the fenders? Thanks and nice job...
Phil
That im not sure of
A combination of steel wool, Windex, and crumpled newspaper will polish the glass to a high sheen.
Just takes time!
Will it work on the darker rust areas?
Are you going to spray a flat clear or satin clear on top to preserve it ?
The paint will actually stay preserved pretty well as is

What do you put on after as a protectant

I love the four door hardtop Peter Fonda drove in crazy Mary and dirty Larry
Thanks for the video
My dad had the same 65 4 door green impala .283 and a powerglide
Hey Ryan nice job Do ya have to protect it now to stop it rusting again?
in my experience, as long as it isnt driven daily in rain storms or snow, the rust wont come back!
@Randall Johnson linseed oil is EXTRMELY flammable, and i have seen too many people lose garages because of it. i do not recommend using it for that reason
thank you
Would this work as well on the frame of a truck with light surface rust ?
No
Nice, how does CLR work on rust to the metal, no paint?
not sure
So, will that yellow residue left on / in the paint buff out completely?
It did for me after a rinse but idk for evrryone

John - thanks for that tip of following up the CLR with some California Gold paint polish. Appreciate it.
How would i get rid of grinding sparks off my vehicle
Hi there does this work if your bonnet is black?
I replaced my original bonnet-my bonnet is steel
Please get back to me..
Thank you 🙏🏼
youd have to try it, not sure
Online it says that clr will damage paint, should I still try it?
The results are in the vid, i like it but do what you think is best
Nice effort Ryan. You're aware the rust will quickly come back to the surface? Show us it again on another video when it returns.
I will. Ive done this on multiple cars and even on my 2 dr wagon. Hasnt come back after 4 years of owning it.
Now just buff and polish.
By gloves I'm pretty sure people meant something like Nitrile gloves.
Yeah i should
I'll be able to remember that
Hope it proves useful!
What should you do if you have surface rust after you primer a car ?
redo the primer & bodywork
What yr is your Camaro?
81
Will that rust come back tho? After a couple of days?
It didnt on this car lol but i guess im not 100% sure. Might not be a bad idea to wipe it down with wd40 or something afterwards

Wasting a lot of money buying CLR. Use white vinegar $2! 4:1 mix with water.
How much can CLR be? 6 bucks?😄

Hello!
All you need to do is the rest of the car. Great
the rust was UNDER the paint. will start returning soon after the solution dries
Thats why people put linseed oil over top, so it doesnt come back
