Why NOT Taking Notes Helped Me Become a BETTER Student!

  • In my 3rd year of Medical School, I decided to quit taking notes all-together. I've relied on note-taking as a memorization/study method for years, but I wasn't getting the result I was looking for. Worst of all, I was not enjoying the learning process anymore because it felt like a chore. This single-impulsive choice was one of the best things I did in Medical school.

    Hi, I'm Khaled. I'm a medical student in the middle east. I love my cat Miku and I love going around and giving advice to everyone. I tend to nerd out on some specific subjects and hyperfixate on them as well. I hope you have a wonderful day :)

    The notes didnt work for me too because i think i am a visual learner i can remember a textbook page,colour, concept,and the drawing on that page . So during exams while answering questions i remembered textbook pages and the teachings more then those notes.

    I used to have this problem. Our school teacher forced us to write down the notes she created. They were lengthy, had unnecessary info (stuff that don't really help clear a concept) and i was too stressed by trying to memorize all of it. Back then,the moment i came home from school, i had lunch, had a 1 hour nap and then wrote and memorized notes till 12. Even then my work wasn't finished and had to stay up late. In grade 5.
    The moment i left school life i felt so liberated from so much stress. I wrote my own notes, i just jotted down main info, made small diagrams and pictures for my memorization and guess what, i went from a barely passing student to getting top grades.
    TLDR; Write only concise notes, if you need to.

    I realized that too. I always took notes when I was in HS and college the first time. I recently started going back to school and not taking notes and just going over the books over and over and using quizlet. I'm a better student at 35 than I ever was as a kid and young adult.

    I feel like the way you presented your point reflected the, checked notes/rewinded, the broader umbrella understanding.
    Like it really shows in this vid, I feel. Personally and at my new job, I am still taking a ton of notes and also noted that I didn’t really look back. Will now try to limit myself.

    I feel the same when you said you never read the notes you wrote. I see my friends write down notes and referring back to it in class, but it feels pointless when I do it because it changes nothing !
    All in all, great video.

    I have a video request: could you make a video on how to study anatomy? I feel some of the advices you gave on previous videos (like focusing on the main concepts) do not strictly apply to anatomy, I would really love to hear your perspectives and methods: thank you (from a very lost second year italian medical student)!

    But if i quit notes, what do i do when i have to revise everything for the exam, like what if i forget everything until that point because i have studied so much more other topics?

    • @KloomOfficial
      @KloomOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, so I didn't discuss what to do instead, but the gist of it is:
      Instead of reading through my notes to revise, I go through flashcards my friends made (or I found online) and revise everything constantly through those. Some of my friends instead prefer going through the lectures/lessons on the textbook by revision, but NOT by reading the book, but rather trying to explain to themselves from memory what they've learned, then looking back and checking if they've missed anything. That way you're constantly digging for information in your head. It helps A LOT with memorization and you'll find yourself remembering a lot more in the exam. It's like magic!
      I'll make a video in the future on specific study methods I like to use and others I don't use but think they're very very good!

    can you share with us the textbooks that you used in med school plz especially physiology cause i have a weak foundation in it ?
    And also book that helped you in your clinical years
    Thank you 🙏

    • @KloomOfficial
      @KloomOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! Just to preface things, I'm not yet in my clinical years. That will be next year in about 3 months! I am just about to finish my pre-clinical years in about 2 weeks. We follow a 5-year system of 3 years of pre-clinical followed by 2 years of clinical.
      For physiology, I used Guyton & Hall but not very extensively. I referred back to the book when the physiology lectures were a bit confusing. I also did use BRS Physiology but only for the practice questions because they were pretty good. There's also a Guyton practice question book which I heard was pretty good but I personally did not use.

    • @KloomOfficial

      Might wanna ask around your school to see if someone is making them. You can find them online as well if you're studying specific majors. Medicine has a lot of premade flash cards on Anki.
      You can also learn to make your own which was what I did in my first few years of university.

    Notes is so f ing trash. Like i wasted all my time writing down than just reading, at the end after writing the whole ass chapter i don't remember, maybe i do but don't feel productive it just doesn't make me feel that i remember that concept. It takes me about 5 to 10 min to understand a concept but take 20 to 30 min to write and i feel more productive, understand more and do smt when i read and explain to myself, u may say to write what you understand but like at the end of the day people like are so lazy that we dont open it. All i wanna say is actively understanding is betterc than actively writing because reading makes you remember longer
