STOP MAKING NOTES - YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME!!!

  • You've probably always been told to make notes whilst studying but usually, this can be a waste of time, especially if you're spending hours on the layout, diagrams, colour scheme etc. Do we actually go back to our notes to revise them? Are there alternative and more effective ways of studying that will save you a lot of time? In this video, I explain why I don't make notes and how I use my whiteboard to study.

    I never loved making notes. I hardly read from them. Even when i made notes i would read from the text book at the last minute. Noting the fact that I'm a slow writer it takes up so much of my time. I'm glad to see there are many people like me here. It is comforting indeed.

      But sometimes I do make notes but it is modified .

    I became more effective since I stoped making notes. No colored pencils, highlighters and pens are nessessary to study. I felt that I was losing my prescious time. All I need is mechanical pencil, eraser and books. Or I find book online in pdf, download it and I study directly from digital book. Using tablet and stylus pen.

    I will tell u a hack. Notes are quick information that u can quickly read instead of reading the whole chapter. First when u are writing notes make short and 2nd don't start taking notes without reading the chapter. read the chapter underline the important information and write it down. U don't hv 2 write the whole chapter. Then you are not going to copy the exact words from the book. Understand 1 paragraph and write it down in ur own words. And by this u can write notes and revise the chapter. I hope u like this information

I find that making notes passively for all that time (which I have done before) is a waste of time. I don't like making notes and I hardly did it back in college but it does have obvious benefits especially if you're an English major. It helps you come up with answers that not only sound better but are also well organised. English teachers are usually very pleased with well written answers. P.s. by making notes I mean summarising and paraphrasing.

  • @kannonfps
    @kannonfps 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I actually found your point of view really interesting.
    And you have a lot of valid points
    the main issue with notes taking is that most people don't even know how to take a good note.
    The purpose of a note is to make sure that a piece of information is saved, and when needed that little note help you remember that piece of information
    BUT in nowadays school no one knows how to take proper notes, so they just assume it's trash and a waste of time
    a GOOD note should fit on a memo card not on a notebook page, each notes should be 1 piece of information, maybe with some context but overall should never be bigger than a memo card
    and should only contain the real shit you need, there is for example a lot of shit you can easily remember without notes, so the thing you notes NEED to be important to you
    passive learning is also an BIG issue, people just copy paste the information they are given, they don't use their own words, don't really work around the concepts, they end up trying to memorize shit they don't even understand
    A good way to know if you truly learned something is to explain the concept to a kid or someone else, if they get the idea good you learned your shit and most importantly YOU UNDERSTAND it
    in school they teach us to just memorize something for the exams and then poof everything disapear all the "knowledge" that you thought you had is gone because you only tried to memo that shit instead of properly understand it
    Quizz are a great way to see how much you remember as well

    • @kannonfps
      @kannonfps 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @need2study yep exactly, copy pasting informations is the worst and most useless way to learn

      If you've already got all the information in front of you in the form of textbooks, slides etc then you can just work from them straight away instead of copying them out but I'm not sure how it works for literature . Good luck tho :(

      Hi, I guess I'm 4 months too late :( but if it helps - I JUST completed my Lit major final year, got a 4.0 GPA throughout the year and I never made notes. Not once. I read extensively and referred to a lot of jstor articles and existing thesis projects to strengthen and supplement my essays. But truly, if it works for you - don't pick up the pen and paper more than you have to. I personally believe it takes time away from reading and revising.
