Chevy Silverado speedometer calibration for gears and tires with a Superchips programmer

  • After installing 33" tires and 4.56 gears on my 2004 Chevy Silverado, my speedometer was way off. I originally used a programmer from Hypertech to re-calibrate the computer in the truck and get my speedometer reading properly but ended up switching to this Superchips unit to resolve a problem with my dash lights for the brake system.

If I already have an EFI Live tune on my truck, with the superchips programmer overwrite my tunes if all I want to update is my tire size and gear ratio?

That's a good question. I don't know. It would definitely be worth calling them to ask before buying/using one.

Random curiosity. Did you, by chance, happen to validate the speedometer using, say, an unmodified vehicle traveling on a highway matching speed for speed (someone you know who could help). Obviously it would be a non-scientific validation, but it'd be interesting to know if your speedo matches theirs at both city and hwy speeds.
Thanks. I caught your other video and glad this one popped up in recommendations as well. You may consider adding (if the YT video editor allows) an additional title card or perhaps updating the title on the other video so people know there was an update to this and to watch the other video. Just a thought.

Would this work on a 1998 Chevy c1500

Thanks for posting this video! I was wondering how you like the 4.56 gearing? What is the weight of your trailer and what is your normal cruising speed? Have you noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption? I have a 2009 Silverado with the 4.8L engine and just had the gearing changed from 3.23 to 4.10, still at the shop because they are trying to figure out how to reprogram the speedometer! 😒I may have to do it myself too, thanks again!

I was surprised that my fuel economy actually got better with the 4.56 gears. The truck got it's pep back that it had lost when I put the bigger tires on it, so it drives nicer when not towing in genral. My trailer is ~3800 pounds dry, according to the manufacturer. According to the CAT scales, when loaded up for a trip, my trailer is about 4700 pounds loaded. I keep my speed down, and tow at 58-60 MPH. I enable tow/haul mode and put the truck in "3" instead of D when towing. When crusing at 58-60, the moter runs at just under 3000 RPM and will hold 3rd gear well, even when going up inclines. 4th gear drops RPMs to under 2000 at that speed and the motor just doesn't make enough torque there, so the truck ends shifting between 3 and 4 too much. The truck would be perfectly happy to run 70MPH when towing in 4th gear, but I don't like going that fast, both for control/braking but also because the tires are only rated for 65MPH, so I want to stay below that.

Did you find with the super chip your mph and odometer were accurate?
You mentioned in an earlier video they were still off a bit.

Question did you ever mess with the speed limiter and rev limiter ? Just curious to know I have a superchips being shipped to me as well

Do you know if this tuner can be reused on another truck after? It’s pricey so trying to see if I can buy it used.

It can be used with one truck at a time. It stores the original stock program so that you can revert back to stock. Once you revert to stock, you could use it on a different truck. In my case, I intend to have the calibrator go with the truck if I ever sell it.
